Thanks for the comments. We were very pleased with how our dancer Tom interpreted the music and the visuals. It was something new for all of us involved. As for the filming - this was a live event so we couldn't have a camera man following the dancer around on stage but I appreciate you wanting to see more of what's happening up close. It would have been nice for the purpose of documentation.
I was there for this being filmed and it was the most epic thing I have ever seen. I hope to see it in ABSOLUT Fringe 2012. Best of luck guys, you truly are a talented bunch. Much love xxx
Absolutely amazing, and just wonderful, really. I must profess my love for this type of expression and coming together of technology and performance art.
For this piece the audio was all pre-sequenced however we are currently working on a new piece that allows the dancer to have control in part or the ability to generate the music in it's entirity. Thanks for watching.
@12itzipitzi We mostly made use of PS3 camera modified to pick up only IR light. For some of the other elements on the back wall we used an Xbox Kinect.
I'm not entirely sure what you are asking but I think maybe it's mad mapper. It allows the user to take the video and distort it to match a 2D or 3D object or space.
Hi great production. Especially like the first part. How do you stop the projections from having a rectangle edge on them like in a cinema projection. Is this a madmapper thing/projector setting or type?
@sphiinxMX We used 4 Macs in total for this. One running audio and midi and another 3 to run visuals each with their own projector. It could potentially be run from fewer machines but we didn't have the necessary equipment at the time.
We used three projectors. One directly above, one high up over head to cover the cubes and another facing the stage, up high to avoid shadows. We tracked the dancer in real time so the interactions are not pre-rendered but live visuals.
Hey, what animation software did you use for the cube outlining/animation, ive started learning cinema 4D. Im trying to learn how to do basic cube animation for a show ive got comming up. Know of any tutorials out there that can help? awesome vid by the way thanks
man 10:40 it gets real good! this is sick! I can see it now.. in some years.. concert venue style shows & performance art/theater come together to create an epic dance theater play production of art and music!! sounds fucking awesome!
So, from a techie side, where was the projector placed and how did you avoid bleed/overlap with a kinetic object in the foreground? Was your dancer very precise or were you tracking/mapping him in real time? Incredibly well done. There must have been a lot of thought behind this project.
Hi, it;s really something you can google to get advice on. There are multiple ways of doing it but essentially you need to be able to animate using something like After Effects or Cinema 4D and then map the animations to a pre-built structure. For this you could use one of many options from VVVV to Madmapper or Resolume Arena.
projectionfreak(dot)com had an article on this. tech specs provided are: "Hardware: 4 iMacs (3 for visuals, one for audio) 3 Projectors (1 x 8000 Lumen Sanyo, 1 x 3500 Lumen NEC and 1 x 5000 Lumen NEC) Microsoft Kinect Playstation 3 Eye (modified to an IR camera) RME Fireface 800 Network Switch Stage Lights (with all visible light filtered out) Software: openFrameworks Syphon Madmapper Quartz Composer VDMX Ableton Live Synapse After Effects Google Sketchup"
Hi, we worked off a basic idea of man's relationship with technology. We played loosely with it as it was a experiment for us. Despite our own intentions we are happy for people to interpret it in their own way.
Hey, if you are into the music - search derekcosgrave on Soundcloud - we will be releasing a digital release of the music for our latest show Codes (which contains most of the music from the prototype) in the near future so follow us on Twitter and Facebook and details will be issued. Thanks.
Awesome meltin' pot. There's just a lack of sensibility in the dancer's interpretation. I mean, the aim of this performance is to break barriers between arts to enter into a kind of trance. He ought to move through the air, to play with it, to cut it. Let this body be an instrument of the music man. a dancer IS a thing. Another thing, I know it's a performance. But, imagine if the camera man filmed the dancer following his steps all around him? :Q...
Can anyone tell me if this actually had a purpose or should look like ANYTHING else than some boring and lame random visual effects surrounding some guy whose rolling on the ground and jumping all around?

Spellbinding! Entrancing! Mesmerised til the end! TY for putting this up! I have to share on FB!
Wow!!!! I have no words.....It's amazing!!! Really art!
Amazing! I always love to see combinations of ideas I've had and seen executed very well. Nice work.
i would pay so much money to watch this live
Coooool! I love this. Is any of the audio generated live or all pre-sequenced? Is any of it controlled by the dancer?
great performance! All elements together

Holy crap that is amazing stuff what software are you using?
beautiful work! what kind of tracking devices were used?
yeah. amazing

@sorceror44 Hey. We used three projectors in total. One for the floor, one for the back wall and one for the projection mapping on the cubes.
just listening to the music, having re-watched the video yesterday. When are you doing a show next?
very creative! im gonna have to share some of my ideas with you!

Thanks. Glad you like it.
Did you use 3 proyectors in the same mac? or 3 different Mas
AWESOME
The cubes were done using After Effects but there are other ways - Cinema 4D or Maya for example.
Is it possible to set this up at home? For a music room?
how many projectors are being used here...?
is this a combination of light box's & over head projectors?
9:35 - 11:24 sounds so beautiful
@sphiinxMX Thanks. There's more to come later this year.
How was this done? Is there any behind the scenes information available? Seems like Max/MSP
can you guide how did you outline those boxes ?
Some of the music and details about it are available on Soundcloud - profile derek-cosgrave. Thanks!
como puedo hacer ese efecto de iluminar solo los bordes? AYUDA porfavor
Not entirely sure at the moment but hopefully something will happen in the future.
10:43 they are using 3 projectors right?
very cool
For this - a combination of openFramworks, Quartz Composer, VDMX, After Effects, Ableton Live and Madmapper.
There is no story behind it , does it ?
When the people clapped the end I jumped of my seat
quite hot actually!
thank you so much!!
What music did you use?
+Hannah Simpson-Orlebar Hi, music is by Derek Cosgrave - soundcloud.com/derek-cosgrave
So far all ive seen was a guy rolling back and forth on the floor! LOLZ
whos the mastermind behind that tune at 9:35?

I imagine something like 11:25 on a mass scale
