That's a good rule for motorcycle riding as well. I just assume everyone is blind and out to hit me.
The only rule of thumb you need is this one: get the hell out of the way
More ppl need to think like this
@@aliasfakename2267right I always ride like I am invisible because I know ppl aren't looking for me or cant see me even though I'm there they just get car blind and don't see bikers of any sort...there just looking for other cars and dont see us
As a motorcyclist I agree. Also that they are not paying attention and they do not see you.
Understand traffic theory and the laws you need to follow.
One good theory is "parking lot" theory. It proves slow drivers are, for the most part, causing more risk of an accident than those who are at the speed limit or above it by a small amount.
If you care about not dying, might wanna learn something. Problem is most bicyclists think they know EVERYTHING and are the smartest people on the road when, in reality, they are mo-rons with some type of god complex.

my cyclist horror story: i used to ride my bike between college classes/to other city locations as it was easier on my body (physical health issues) but i always rode on the sidewalk bc i didnt trust other cars
one night i was taking a shortcut thru an outdoor common area and paused to check my phone. i blinked and found myself surrounded by cyclists riding in a circle around me (i was leaning myself against a statue) all with lights on their helmets. they were asking me to join in, that they were doing a special ride for some charity or something. i politely declined bc i had just gotten out of a two hr class and wanted to go home. they left after that, giving me the time to notice that everyone was in their underwear. the group was in the local news the next morning
WTF that is insane
....You just avoided a cult.
Most of mine are actually from my time living in the Netherlands. I used to cycle to work, just a calm 10 minute drive, very cozy...
Except, when you get the weirdoes that simply do not care about others and just do whatever they want. This includes some guy who just braked and came to a stop perpendicular in the cycling lane, so I basically had to crash into the floor to stop in time.
Or the time I was trying to get to work, saw a throng of like 10 other cyclists slowly moving. And it turns out, it's because some lovey-dovey bullshit couple is HOLDING HANDS while cycling and blocking the entire lane. At 10 in the morning on a work day.

Driving, cycling, or walking. You really never know these days 😅.
wise words
As a pedestrian I cannot stand how cyclists will just zoom past you going 40mph on the sidewalk with barely any warning, I can't count the amount of times I've been run over or almost run over by a cyclist
That's rude. I ride on the sidewalk, but I'm always really courteous to people walking, using my bell and going slightly faster than walking speed if I can't make eye contact with them before passing. The surprise is what is dangerous. I get yelled at sometimes by crazy people still, but I'll take my chances there over the road.
If cyclists road on sidewalks, you wouldn't have drivers raging about cyclists being in their way. You see 13 year olds on ebikes riding on sidewalks. But actual hobbyist cyclists with road bikes always avoid the sidewalk because they know its far more dangerous than riding on the road.
It is illegal to ride bikes on the sidewalk. You are legally supposed to ride in the road and are afforded the same laws as vehicles.
I’m a disabled person and cyclists on my college campus are INSANE. When I’m not in my wheelchair, I’m using forearm crutches to walk. I was walking on the sidewalk outside of my dorm and luckily I had someone with me who was able to yank me off the sidewalk (so hard I DISLOCATED one of my joints) last second to save me from a group of non-student cyclists going full speed in the middle of the sidewalk behind me. They didn’t slow down or stop at all. I’ve had other issues in my wheelchair going to class using the sidewalks and old people on bikes either drive me into the grass because they won’t stop or they stop in front of me and just glare and huff at me. They act as if it’s my fault they don’t use bike lanes or trails and instead bike on sidewalks disabled students are using on a college campus in the middle of a weekday.
Thank you! People riding their bike on sidewalks always act like I'm stupid for not bumping off into the grass for them. And don't even get me started with people parking their stupid e bikes in the middle of the sidewalk??? Like what is the reason???
It should be made clear that there’s a big difference between bicyclists and someone just riding a bike to work
True, as one of those people that just rides a bike to get places and is terrified of cars and tries to stay out of the way i thank you so much
@@flaccidpancake2614 Yeah true, I will never understand how you want to drive on the road with your bike... Just why would you want to be on the road with so many cars? In the city it's impossible to drive around naturally because there is so much traffic and on land the cars are too fast for my taste, if I wanna take a ride on the field or something. But like @KevinsLillaProduktion said, almost only the people with expensive shit are the ones who get angry the most.
@alright.8554 true, true, also critical mass was a mistake, it should've been something that was relgated to places that are mostly cornfields or whatever, i have done bicycle riding stuff with my class in Switzerland in my youth and we all ride around in a single line and go deep into the countryside for it and stick to dirt roads, pretty intense for a bunch of teens that are likely out of shape but the swiss countryside is still beautiful to me to this day
Bicyclists vs heterocyclists
Riding to work is called commuting, you're a commuter cyclist. You're still a cyclist man.
America is not build for bicycles, unlike the Netherlands. We even have bicycle highways over here. My ass hurts by the time i get anywhere but we got em.
And still people act like dicks there. Cyclists/pedestrians/cars, doesn't matter, you'll always find assholes in any type of transportation. Couple holding hands in the bike lane at 10 in the morning holding everyone up; dude in a car just leaving to go into a nearby coffeeshop, in the middle of the road. Multiple times I've just been walking down the sidewalk, minding my own business, when people go broad-shoulder mode, bump into me and then start yelling.
But at least the extensive cycle lanes make it harder to get run over, that's a big plus. Probably the biggest thing the US needs; way more focus on other types of transit/transport than JUST cars.
I recommend using a saddle on your bike instead of a bad dragon.
God I wish there was more infrastructure for bikes, I just want to commute to my job...
Japan is worse. Aside from cyclists there’s also mopeds and the roads are too small to drive around them.

This is exactly why protected bike lanes are important. It solves almost all of the problems.
As a bike commuter over the last year, it really can be very scary having to trust all the drivers to notice you and behave accordingly. Your life is often in their hands. It leads to needing to be very defensive while riding.
I'm probably one of these hated people because I'll do whatever I need to do to feel the most safe while not inconveniencing others. So, it's a blend of on the road, protected lanes, and on the sidewalk depending.
The true answer is more walkable/bikable communities frfr
Bikes are not important, motor vehicles are.
@frankf684 are you aware of what protected bike lanes are?
I agree. A lot of people actively try to run you off the road, or think you'll be intimidated into riding on the sidewalk/dirt. Had plenty of drivers almost run me over while I was directly in their line of sight for multiple seconds, being very predictable. If you aren't in a 2 ton vehicle, other "drivers" don't think you have the right to exist

Nope, they peddled faster and slapped the hood of my ambulance (with the lights on) 🤦♂️
Bro what 😭 isn't it law to pull to the side of the road if there's an ambulance coming? In Europe it is
It's a law in pretty much every state that all commuters must pull over for emergency vehicles when lights/sirens are on. You can be severely fined if you impede an emergency vehicle.
IMO that story hits every big point why people hate cyclists. They crow about sharing the road and accuse drivers of endangering their lives for the sake of convenience, then act like traffic laws don't apply to them as they flagrantly obstruct an ambulance. And the word "swarm." When you're amongst a large group of cars, you know there's gonna be at least a few morons in the group, but it's a bunch of randoms who are just all there at the same time. When you encounter a group of cyclists, they *are* all together, they *do* have the same mentality, and there's a pretty good chance that's gonna be: entitled to the point of clouding their judgment.
The sad part in America has gotten you so convinced to be car eccentric that you can’t even look at a cyclist with compassion is very annoying
Funniest exchange I've seen in person. An officer had an entire group of cyclists(15-20 of them) pulled over in front of my house and was ticketing every single one for running stop signs because they DO have to stop at them as wheeled vehicles.
I almost ran into a cyclist because he thought stop signs dont apply to him.
Bicyclists make up their own rules lol
I watch cyclists run the 4-way stoplight near here all the time. Only a matter of time.....
Cops here in Boston do that too. Cyclists here behave pretty decently
Think about it objectively - you lose a lot of energy and it takes a lot of time to slow down, stop, then pedal up again when a 3-ton death machine is right behind you. I found the biggest danger from following the law was how angry other drivers became at me because I can't overcome physics as quickly as they can.
Most other countries (and some US states/cities) don't require cyclists to stop at signs because there really isn't any need for them to. The law should be changed so cyclists treat it as a yield - they have great visibility and can hear/see danger much better than someone cocooned in an SUV ever would.

Oh man your story about your wife flipping someone off triggered fear in me. When I was in highschool I had a pretty long walk home from school every day. Occasionally guys in driving by would honk to get a rise out of me. One day I had enough and I flipped one of them off. He stopped his car and started backing up. I was so lucky that another car was coming because I guess it scared him and he sped off. Never flipped off a stranger ever since.
You let someone scare you into never flipping someone off again? 😂 Thats next level cowardice.

getting a DUI can really make some people very entitled
Having the protection of posting behind the internet curtain makes some people very entitled.
Actually had a cop write me a DUI after refusing to take my breath, he offered to do so after asking me if I drank 50x and supposedly I seemed too happy to test my breathe so he asks another 50x... DUI was written until a superior officer eventually came up and ripped it in half in front of my parents who I had to call to drive me home for the alternative was spending a night in jail for no crime. Superior officer ripped that and the reckless driving in half and threw it on the street. Truly an odd experience.
Cop who pulled me over was the one I was driving behind so I was of course being careful. My turn following him was too wide apparently. Fact it was 3AM must have been at play because they really do look for trouble around them. Bye bye night driving. Been pulled over a handful or more times and just let go for driving at night.
Cops took a real long time to arrive after I avoided getting attacked by 3 men because they thought the knife I pulled out was a gun. But they must have been high because they circled back and I began running when running me over seemed like a mission. If I walked straight I'm sure I'd have been hit. Police are always there when you don't need them. Hence why people should have a gun in their house. If you walk at night like 3am you should have some means of self preservation, at least a flashlight... pepper spray is swell.

I’m 19 years old and I don’t have a driver’s license. I live in Michigan and riding a bicycle is pretty much the only way for me to commute to places that are outside of main city bus routes or whatever. I always treat the road as if the cars have the priority. I’ve never had any problems with drivers but the road designs often seem dangerous for cyclists, for example in my experience I’ve encountered multi-lane main road intersections that don’t have a pedestrian crossing or a bike lane so you basically have to ride your bike directly next to and in between cars to cross the street. It’s inevitable that something bad will eventually happen there. I also don’t associate myself whatsoever with the spandex-wearing middle-aged road cyclists that own multiple cars and think they own the street so it doesn’t feel great to be lumped in with them.
I cycle in Chicago primarily for transportation because the cost and hassle of owning a car in the city doesnt make any sense. After cycling for years its really not hard to become road savy and navigate effectively, safely (and sometimes even more quickly) around motorists. That being said, ive seen plenty of asshole cyclists who ride blindly through red lights and stop signs and potentially endanger themselves and pedestrians. Ive also seen plenty of drivers do the same and just adapt how I ride to treat traffic signals more like suggestions, since that seems to be the MO of a lot of motorists as well. You live by the sword, you die by the sword. Ultimately, being situationally aware has far more bearing on everyones safety than what vehicle you use. Theyre all just tools at the end of the day and tools are only as good or bad as their users.
dude the roads are dangerous for cars too. too many potholes in this state
I live in a rural community in Illinois. Everyone drives here unless you have had your license taken away. One of those unfortunate souls, who went by the name "Big D" was interesting to say the least. He lived in the old run down motel east of town. He was famous for being arrested multiple times for stealing marshmallows from the dollar store. He also managed to receive at least 5 DUI's from riding his bicycle while intoxicated. His reign of terror ended when he was beat to d*ath in his motel room after selling a d*ug dealer baking powder that he had labeled as c*caine.

That being said, I recently bought a new bright orange mountain bike, and I typically wear brightly colored clothing while riding. If you can’t see me, you aren’t looking. Everyone should keep an eye out for each other to keep the roads and trails safe and accident free. Don’t be an asshole.

This seems to be a problem only in the U.S, which is a very car centric country, aparently. Here were I live in Brazil bikes are a very common means of transportation, not just a tool for sport and exercise, and I rarely see drivers raging against cyclists or the other way around. Lots of people park their cars in bike lanes though and this used to make me feel very, very angry, but nowadays I just go around them and move on with my life. And usualy drivers give room to cyclist to be safe on the road when there's no bike lane. It is not perfect, of course, but in my experience if the cyclist is riding with caution there's nothing to fear or to be angry about.

In the Netherlands literally everybody rides a bike. But even we hate “cyclists”, just because they keep driving on roads they’re not supposed to. And by cyclists I mean the people with the lightweight bikes and the spandex outfit
I used to live in Gainesville FL. All the hospitals are near UF and so are most of the Dr offices. I had picked my middle school daughter up with my kindergarten child to go for an appointment. On our way home we ended up directly behind 100+ cyclists ...and they were NAKED! And it was during 5pm rush hour. Why were they naked? but, don’t ignore the fact that america isn’t built for bikes. and making more space for cyclists and pedestrians makes it safer for everyone objectively (less lanes, sidewalks, stop signs, lower speeds, etc) don’t attack me, feel free to do your own research
They've built bike lanes where I live that don't get used, made our narrow roads even narrower, took out car parks for them which has led to businesses closing down in some areas because customers can't park there and cyclists don't stop there. They don't always work so what research should he do? They have done nothing but made transport in my city even worse. They even replaced a bus lane with a cycle lane that doesn't get used.

There's literally someone in the comments doing just that. As a kid, I rode bicycles in the grass more than hard surfaces.
Taking a road bike off road even briefly is a great way to get a flat tire or crash.
What cyclists I do see personally haven't been as insane as the ones seen in this vid, but oh boy have I seen (and been hit by) people in cars being distracted. The one that hit me even sped off right afterward. Literally landed on their hood and rolled off onto the ground in a heap. Was too dazed and confused to catch their license plate as they zoomed away.

As a normal pedestrian ppl in cars at crosswalks are looking for the one ton car over a 160 lb man. I've been clipped once and almost hit several times. My brother used to ride a bike all the time and say ppl try to hit him on purpose.
I used to ride a bike to work up in Dallas Texas. No bike lanes to be found so I biked on the sidewalk because foot traffic was almost non existent. Still managed to get hit by a car who tried making a U-turn and went up over the curb and ran over my leg. Sometimes you just can’t win lol.
That is hilarious
Yeah, people are absolutely psychotic (video relevant) when it comes to dealing with cyclists. A lot of people actually think they're entitled to actual fucking MURDER, simply because they're in the bigger vehicle or feel slighted somehow.
I've been almost run over multiple times. I've also broken the laws of the street multiple times. These occurrences didn't overlap. When I break the law, it's usually driving on the wrong side of the bike lane for like 500 meters. Other cyclists see you, everyone knows you keep to your right, nothing noteworthy happens.
Meanwhile I've been clipped one time I waited for the light to turn green, on the bike lane, next to a pedestrian - bam, car just rounds the corner on red, definitely didn't even have the blinker lights on. Another time I stop due to a weird feeling and some odd sound and here comes a car, shooting out the wrong side of a one-way street right into the bike lane.
I will say, though how many cars have passed you without any incident versus the one in like 1000 that have tried to hit you or at least swerve to scare you or whatever the hell they were doing, how many cyclists do you see there are just assholes and it’s almost everyone
My brother and i used to ride bikes as a kid. Worst part the police would get onto you in you were on the sidewalk and tell us we had to ride in the road. Which made no sense to me. I never had any issues though. But my brother once said before that some people knocked him off his bike while purposely trying to hit him. Normally (and logically) if a car comes. We get off the road completely. Even tho he was off the road. According to his story they swerved to try and hit him. I don’t remember he they hit him or his bite. But he was fine… but we’re also not white and he was riding in a racist neighborhood so I dunno what was their motive.
I pretend my motorcycle is a bicycle n I start peddling when the cyclist are around, if you ride feel free to use this to stay incognito around them and blend in
There are bad cyclists and drivers but two tons of car is a bit more dangerous than a bike
Some cyclists maybe get a little over-defensive because any slight mistake by a driver and they will die. It would be great if they didn't have to use the car road, but they can't.

I cycled to university/work for 6 years now in UK, having visited US in 2024 I am completely floored that people even dare cycle in places outside of NYC, SF, and a couple downtowns. It is an unfortunate place not to cycle because I can't trust half of the drivers to even comprehend what to do around a cyclist.
I honestly think the biggest problem lies in the road. I'm from the Netherlands myself, and we have a second path for cyclists basically everywhere except for the highways. I guess it's difficult in the US to create such specific paths, so I'm glad I don't live there I guess 🤷♀️
But honestly I'm more of a mountainbiker so yea guess it isn't really exactly the same
As a German from a very mountain-y area, I always envy the Dutch for their flat as heck country that's perfect for bike riding 😔
@@solus8685 I, on the other hand, really like riding through the mountains! But I gotta agree that on a daily basis it'd also get annoying most likely
I wouldn't say it's difficult, I'd say they just don't want to do it.
Just like healthcare or public transit, the US as a whole simply does not care for people. They care for profit.
Allowing people to bike to work would cut down gasoline and car purchases on top of requiring a one-time fix of their infrastructure. The US government literally refuses to even update or fix their horrible education program, why would they ever think to take like 10% of the military worship budget and put it toward something actually helpful for their people?
Funnily enough, the dumbasses produced by that flawed education system are coming out in droves under this video to proclaim how much they want to hurt or kill cyclists for daring not to be in a car. That's totally normal and healthy, clearly. Not psychotic at all.
America's infrastructure doesn't support bikes for the most part as it takes 30 minutes to get anywhere in a car, so bike lanes and sidewalks just wouldn't work in most places.
I think at the end of the day it's down to poor infrastructure and/or city planning, a cyclist being on the road in front of you doesn't matter too much when you're in a city where cars are significantly slowed down in built up urban areas, and in most of those "walkable" city type places, the cars and cyclists are completely separated anyway, cyclists don't have much incentive to brave sharing a lane with a massive piece of machinery if they have ample bikeways, and now that e-scooters and e-bikes are becoming better and cheaper most governments at least in eg the US and Australia don't seem to be keeping up at all, I'm biased here of course but I have an Electric Unicycle that can effortlessly sustain 70km/h but I'm not legally allowed to ride it on any main roads regardless if they're 50/60/70 with no way to register it as a road vehicle, but cyclists are completely allowed to block an entire lane of traffic on pretty much any road in the state even if they're going 10 km/h uphill on a 60+km/h road, right next to a dedicated bike path, they are totally allowed to just decide to be a severe traffic hazard.
Fr flipping people off is such a risky move. My mom always told me a story ab how a guy cut her off or sum, she shot up the middle finger and the dude pulled up next her, going “careful, who you give that finger young lady.” As he put a pistol up on the dash. Some people are genuinely crazy, that dude was like a chaotic neutral tho 😭😭
I ride a bike for exercise but I don't ride on main roads except to cross across them. The people who ride around main roads with cars are insane.
Hard to do when there's no bike lanes or sidewalks. There's hardly even crosswalks where I live
I mean I just do neighborhoods. Don't need bike lanes when the roads are super wide and have barely any cars around. But if you live in an urban area then yeah I guess you can't.
@treytison1444 not to mention people use bikes to get to work. America has TERRIBLE infrastructure for anything except cars. Which is stupid because better biking/walking and public transportation infrastructure means less traffic. Also cities are for people not for cars. Cars are just to get us around so we shouldn't build our cities around them as if they are a complete necessity, which has ironically MADE cars a necessity to get around in the USA today (in most places) this is despite the fact that driving is still recognized as a privilege by the government and not a right. The USA has some of the worst infrastructure of any first world country. You know it's bad when RU and CN have better transportation options
Well in normal countries cycling on the roads is normal. But even so I try to avoid it because I don't trust car drivers
