I remember playing this back in 2011 and tearing up, man you felt for both Marcus and Dom such great characters. To this day it still chokes me up, It is such a good and memorable death. RIP DOM.
Loopy Longplays I was already on the verge of tears knowing what Dom was about to do and as soon as mad world started playing it all came out like a frickin dam collapsing
Ever since the first Gears my brother and I would always do split screen. Usually I’m Marcus and he’s Dom. When this scene happened we both teared up. After the cutscenes were done we paused the game he said “Fuck I’m not Dom anymore!” Still a memorable moment to recall.
I'd actually been spoiled that Dom was going to die, I just didn't know when. As soon as this chapter name flashed up as Brothers to the End, I'm like "fucking hell, here it comes." Still hit me like a truck. It absolutely stands as one of the very best death scenes in games to this day. Also, as an aside, Nan McNamara (Anya's VA) absolutely killed it. The absolute anguish in her voice when she gets to Marcus knowing she has to stop him trying to help is just heartbreaking.
Same man, some pos spoiled it for me too, i remember lookin over at my brother and just nodding my head when it finally happened, I always played as marcus and he always played as dom. Gears was the reason i bought an xbox 360 in the first place. Even having it spoiled its still such a terribly sad scene.
My buddies and I had completely called that Dom was gonna die in Gears 3 as soon as the trailers and stuff started coming out. It still didn't help. Gears ain't exactly some deep complex story, but holy hell did the OG trilogy know how to hit you where it hurt.
5 years later still not over it. Dominic Santiago A hero, Sacrificed himself to save his friends, and a Husband to Maria Santiago. May they Rest In Peace.
These times reminds us of what's the best and worst of out lives ! But hey people like us got to experience these cutscenes like they're apart of us ! You're the absolute best and I hope life brings u nothing but good
This part still sheds tears 😢 he'll of they make a full 4k next gen remastered version that will probably be too much to handle can anyone handle this in 4k with high settings
I’m getting the Player 2 blues. Im the wimpy little kid everyone would pick on and rip the control out his hands that would make sooo sad back in the day. I could legit cry lol i would try not to. And on top of that i was always excited to play this when no one else was because i had play station. I just miss the early 2000’s man, we should’ve frozen time during that period. People made sense back then now everyone is weird
whenever he says "never thought it would end like this, huh? huh maria?" chills and tears happen. and then Marcus says " Dom! NO!" and then i ball ery dam time
Marcus wanting to go back into the fire to pull Dom out is true brotherhood. Even in the face of certain death Marcus still wants to believe the man who has always been by his side, is still alive. One of the saddest and best moments in the franchise
Same here. His story through the three games is so tragic but you think maybe he's going to finally be able to be done with everything after this game, but instead his tragic story ends even more tragically.
1:42 I really love the way the scene transitions from fast and epic to suddenly slow and quiet as we(the viewer)along with Marcus begin to realize what's about to happen. Watching Marcus freeze(instead of get to safety)as he tries to comprehend what Dom is about to do is really heartbreaking to watch....The music compliments it so well.
When I was younger, me and my Dad played through all the Gears in co-op and I was always player 2. Needless to say when the music started and I realized what was happening, I bawled my eyes out for like 30 minutes afterwards with my dad finally telling me something like "You gotta let him go buddy". This was and still to this day is easily the saddest part of any video game in my opinion. Afterwards, playing as anyone other than Dom never felt right. Just proves what an amazing series gears of war is.
@Brometheus Most definitely. As time passed and I grew older, Me and my Dad slowly drifted apart. It was mainly because he was just always so busy with work. There would be times where I would go a week or two without even seeing him even though he lived in the same house. He'd be working by the time I got dressed and left for school and would still be working when I got home and even through Dinner/Bed time. The Gears series were really the only Video Games he liked playing and so I cherished every single moment we spent playing together because it was really the only 1 on 1 time I would get with him. We never really did typical Father-Son stuff like playing catch, working out, riding bikes, watching movies, going out to get Ice Cream, etc. So in short, you're totally right. I'll definitely remember it forever Lol. Some of the Fondest memories I have of my Dad are from playing GOW with him!
Me and my dad did too. I was really sad to see dom die and my dad felt sad too we love him very much and dad gears end at three as well After dom died it didn't felt the same
+Ryan Hobbs his voice is very good but what gets me most is when after the second explosion he realizes hes dead and that look in his eyes is fcking real.
It sucks even more because of what Marcus says afterwards. "Let me get him out of there!" No one could have survived that, but at that point he just couldn't believe that Dom was gone. ;-;
Only way he could have survived is if a locust hole opened up under him as the explosion happened and even if it did happen I doubt how someone could survive the fall
Marcus watched so many people die over the decades, from the Pendulum Wars to the Locust war. Kim, Anthony, so many good Gears, even a young kid like Benjamin which also affected him more than it seems, but this was the death that broke him, only matched by his own father. Marcus lost everyone, well, except for Anya, and the original gang of misfits and grub killers, but Dom was the brother he always wanted, the only brother he ever needed. Really hurts the soul man, and the VA (can’t remember his name but he’s done a lot a good work over the years, even playing Joker in under the red hood I believe) but this is who I think of whenever I hear that man voicing anything or anyone else. RIP Dom, and I wish and hope that Gears will return to its former glory, same with Halo and the others, but that seems to have passed.
In the books he was originally best friends with Carlos (Doms older brother) he died in the pendulum wars which drew Marcus and dom closer. Crazy what Marcus had gone through!
Little brother, Marcus is older than Dom by 3 years. Marcus was actually friends with Carlos Santiago(Dom’s older brother). The sad thing is that Carlos died the same way, when the Cog was at war with the United Indie Republics an infantry fighting vehicle was slaughtering Marcus’ and Carlos’ unit. Carlos ran towards the IFV and and stuck himself with several grenades ran on top and blew himself up. And Anya’s mother died in that skirmish too.
Andrew Pandrew well yeah but I think it’s more of like when the big brother always protects his little brother type of mindset like how dom did for Marcus
It's sad Marcus wanted to "Get him out of there" after the explosion, Dom was his brother, he meant the world to him. I'm sure it was unbelievable to him to even think of Dom being dead.
I cried my eyes out when I knew he was going to die. One of the best video game characters ever. Dom is the only one out of the group who actually cared about everybody.
The fact they play the instrumental for "Mad World" makes it even sadder... since the first Gears of War trailer had this song in it. I remember playing this with one of my friends and he played Dom and it wasn't the same for the rest of the game.
I just beat all 3 ot games with my girl she thought i was a pussy for crying over games until now i had already played the games when i was younger she even cried at marias death too
My god if they kill off Marcus, Baird or Cole i think I might not be able handle it due to losing dom, he acts and resembles my brother who was killed in Afghanistan years back and him and the Gears series in general has a special place in my heart. When he was still around he would always call me Marcus and I’d call him Dom cause we were big Gearheads, he never got to play Gears 3 cause he died shortly after it came out and I played the hell out of it and always picked Dom during horde and multiplayer to honor him. My gratitude for the makers of this amazing series, the awesome people I met online playing this amazing game and the marine corps for giving my brother a Purple Heart for his service. Semper Fi
You cry like a human being who doesn't deny their emotions. Nothing to be ashamed of or look down upon. In ancient Greece, men were allowed their emotions and it's probably why they were better people.
In the extended lore as well Dom also loses his kids to the Locust which is why his wife Maria fell into deep depression. When you think about it, Dom's story came full circle.
One of the video few scenes I've cried to. I've got a bleeding heart for those who've lost their loved ones(lost my wife to cancer) and Dom just thinking only of Maria while his life is about to end is just fucking heartbreaking.
Shes lives and will continue to live in your mind, heart and in the memories you had together, keep your head up, they would have wanted us to live out our lives to the fullest
I swear this game and Halo reach just captured a different part of me. A young man captured by brotherhood and sacrifice. These two games really cemented what it is to be a team. Marcus was so devastated here and it really sets the tone for the scene. They were not only partners but they were brothers. And dom always felt like he was in Marcus’s shadow, so when the time arised for someone to stand out Dom took it with no hesitation. He wanted to give not only his brother a chance at survival but his team a glimmer of hope. When it seemed as if the hive and Locust were finally able to pin down the Cog, Dom stepped in to give them a fighting chance. Brothers to the end. Marcus and dom are the Gears of War that we grown to know and love and this scene just reinforces that bond. Truly brothers until the end
This is why games like Overhype can't even compete with real games that have an actual story behind it that just pulls the players in to the point they feel for them. Gears 1 you get and understanding for their world, Gears 2 you get to feel their sorrow and sacrifices, Gears 3 you feel everything from Gears 1 and 2 and just break down when there's finally hope but at a cost. This isn't just a story or a game, to me this is art and it's drawn with only a few colors, ash grey covers nearly the entire portrait but in those ashes you can see other colors standing out to show what lies behind those ashes.
I remember when I was much younger playing with my older brother as Dom and thinking he was so cool. Now with my brother gone and seeing this it was so sad. You just gotta look back on the good times.
I feel you man. Me and my brother played the campaign together; he was always Marcus and I was always Dom. When this scene happened, I felt empty inside. It was just so sad
F**k's sake dude, it's almost been 8 years since Dom died and it still hurts to hear Marcus yell "Dom, no!" Feels bad, man. My guy just wanted to tend to his plants.
We're gonna be happy to see him, and then be destroyed when we get to the cutscene and find out where or how his children die, or we get a deep cut easter egg from GoW 1 and see a young Rojas
What makes this worst is you thought it was the end of it I wish the weapon just killed them all why continue it to the weapon did not work and all hell breaks loose with the swarm yes gears of war 4 is decent but it's still fucked up because the locust did have that crystal shit on them maybe the weapon just made them evolve it's sad all the deaths were not needed Dom didn't have to kill himself but he wanted to be with his wife but Marcus did not want to let him go that's why it's hard and frustrating to not forget about him
But honestly... Myrrah didn't choose to be the first Locust queen, just like Kaits mother yet without a queen Gears of War wouldn't be how it is because the Locust don't attack without a leader.
I cried so much when i saw this and to this day i still do its just like i csnt help it its so fucking sad! But tbh when i frist saw this i thought he was leaveing and then when he tuened that csr around i was like fuck and it hit me and then bamm and then me have to pasue it afterwards casue i was crying! And iam not ashamed i cried and still do....if a game can make me cry like this its a good ass game! No other game has made me cry like that.
I didn't even feel bad... Why would I? His death is a complete ripoff of everyone else's deaths who are friends with the protagonist. It always happens in this stuff, you become someone's friend and they die to save you. It happened with Dom, and happened with Jin in Dead Island.
not man, i remember back in 2006 when the first trailer was launched it looked awesome, and everyone was expecing to be just a generic unreal tournament actialization or a UE demo/game, but it turned out to be so incredible that it became a franchise.
@conquistador-7526 I just hope emergence day will save the franchise. And as much as I really don't want to, I'd still love for them to try.To finish gears six And at least fix the mess. That was 5 story, but without cheaply tossing it to the side and I'm also hoping emergence. Day will serve as a stepping Stone for 6 to also go back into its routes. Still, I could care less know if it's canceled. Even the coalition admitted no one wanted it, which was so surprising. And even refreshing to hear to see that they really do care about the franchise unlike like 343 with halo Since they just stupidly, keep hiring people That don't even like it to work on it. When they should just eat having people that love it like moderns to improve it.
Yeap, still here, sitting in my 40s, still crying every time i see this. I played GoW3 with my best buddy, whith whom we played all Gears together. He was always Dom, and after watching this scene i remember that we stood silent for at least five minutes not believing what happened. What a bromance. F
What makes this scene even more heart wrenching is Marcus was friends with Dom's brother before E- Day. Before Dom's brother died, he told Marcus to watch over and take care of Dom for him.
Just started playing Gears of War when Gears 5 came out. Grinding them all one after the other and I wish I would've played this franchise alot sooner. Never been this attached to a video game character. Just dropped my controller and looked at my screen in disbelief when this scene came up. R.I.P Dom
Had a cousin that took his life around the time this game came out and coincidentally he shares the name Santiago with dom and we would play lot of Gears 3 together, this cinematic will forever remind me of him 💯🙏🏽fly high Santiago Lorenzo Coronado 🕊
First time I ever cried for a video game character that I grew old with, alot of us lost a piece of us that day we will never get back. R.I.P. Dom, what a hero.
Ah man this is the saddest scene I've ever watched in games. Just imagine loosing your best friend a friend that became a brother through trial and hard ship. Man this scene really gets to me.
I’m just thankful they gave Dom one of the most glorious deaths in gaming history. No one wanted to see it, everyone loved Dom, but ever since he found his wife he was waiting for a moment like this
Lost his kids and parents in gears 1. Maria in gears 2. And the last thing he held dear on that planet besides marcus, his garden, the man literally only had one person he was holding on for and when he was in danger he made the most heroic move in the whole franchise to save his brothers life. Dom was a true hero and went out in a literal blaze of glory
The voice acting and facial expressions really make this scene all the more impactful. Marcus’s delivery sells it. So does dom’s. I think the expressions all the characters make are emotional. Especially Dom saying “never thought it would end like this, huh Maria?” then him taking a breath, bracing for the impact. Letting go in those final moments. So simple yet so emotional.
It's all Dom where are you goin I'm piling the plug of my iPhone charger so I can bring my phone with me with you where oh I forgot to say fuck this shit I'm out
the worst part about this scene, is that it was just that, nothing fancy at all, a pure death, and just like it, you're back into the mad House, getting swarmed by locust. all excitement gone of playing, just like how you'd imagine the characters felt, just dread. I played through the rest of the game down without Dom, only laughing a few times at Cole, just to be burst with joy when Marcus stabbed that bitch locust queen. sweet revenge, Carmine living was a grace as well. one of the best trilogies. I just wish Microsoft didn't beg them to make more gears games cause their other exclusives can't hold a candle to this game. best 3rd person shooter
If someone cries when someone dies from a Game, Film/Movie, Programme/TVShow it is for one reason, and one reason alone..........Connection, and I don't just mean fan girls screaming because a character they had the hots for died, but because of all the history all the memories of that character, all the connections made. It doesn't help when sad music is played either.
I absolutely hated Dom all the way through Gears. Whiny, moany, miserable etc. Cried like a baby here though. You're right. Connection. Even though I didn't like him, his character was awesome, his motives were always clear and you had no choice but to empathise with him. Even moreso after Maria actually died. One of the greatest deaths ever. So powerful.
The first time seeing this scene while doing co-op with my friends, we all were speechless. No words were spoken for at least ten minutes after the next mission.
That “dom” at the end killed me. It’s 2024 and I’m still not over this 😔

The thing that gets me is the “dom no!” His facial expression and everything

Ever since the first Gears my brother and I would always do split screen. Usually I’m Marcus and he’s Dom. When this scene happened we both teared up. After the cutscenes were done we paused the game he said “Fuck I’m not Dom anymore!” Still a memorable moment to recall.
The Overboss WANA DO IT RAW? THIS SCENE STILL MAKES ME CRY TOO... EVEN IF IT'S IN PRISON
Anthony Palumbo my excuse was I’m going to lantik shitty, NO RUBER
"You feel that....that’s for dom, and everyone else you killed you bitch."
I had no spoilers and literally yelled “NO” at 3 am
Same man, some pos spoiled it for me too, i remember lookin over at my brother and just nodding my head when it finally happened, I always played as marcus and he always played as dom. Gears was the reason i bought an xbox 360 in the first place. Even having it spoiled its still such a terribly sad scene.

This scene was better than a lot of dramatic movie scenes
When I was younger, me and my Dad played through all the Gears in co-op and I was always player 2. Needless to say when the music started and I realized what was happening, I bawled my eyes out for like 30 minutes afterwards with my dad finally telling me something like "You gotta let him go buddy". This was and still to this day is easily the saddest part of any video game in my opinion. Afterwards, playing as anyone other than Dom never felt right. Just proves what an amazing series gears of war is.
that's actually really sweet. what a cool dad
@@stupidmclovin Hope you're okay, man.

Me and my dad did too.
I was really sad to see dom die and my dad felt sad too we love him very much and dad gears end at three as well

Marcus's voice is what really gets me at this scene
+Ryan Hobbs his voice is very good but what gets me most is when after the second explosion he realizes hes dead and that look in his eyes is fcking real.
+akai kami IT'S A GIANT WORM!!!
It’s when don says never thought it’d go down like this huh Maria 😭😭💔
It sucks even more because of what Marcus says afterwards.
"Let me get him out of there!"
No one could have survived that, but at that point he just couldn't believe that Dom was gone. ;-;
Only way he could have survived is if a locust hole opened up under him as the explosion happened and even if it did happen I doubt how someone could survive the fall
Tai would
+The Weaboo Hunter Tai has proven to be very weak against the attack suicide. :P
Wolverine would have
he was in denial
Between Gears of War 3 and 4 Anya also dies. Marcus cannot catch a break at all
We are back, brother ❤
Gears e day
Remember when Dom bailed you out in GOW1? Well, he bailed you out again... Dom has always been the big brother :(
Angel george Yeah, he’d also run into the beserker or raam. Like damn it dom 😂
And Anya’s mother died in that skirmish too.
and as such, we were always marcus fenix.. thus, we lost a brother here.
Actually Marcus is older and was best friends with Dom’s older brother Carlos....who died by blowing himself up to save Marcus.
Andrew Pandrew well yeah but I think it’s more of like when the big brother always protects his little brother type of mindset like how dom did for Marcus
The voice acting is just incredible when he screamed " DOM NO" I got chills
It's sad Marcus wanted to "Get him out of there" after the explosion, Dom was his brother, he meant the world to him. I'm sure it was unbelievable to him to even think of Dom being dead.

12 years on, Thank You for keeping this online. Just, thank you.
When my dad and I played this, we were both speechless and silent. It was very emotional since we played all the gears of war with him (so far)
Very rarely will I cry, but for Dom, who's already lost Maria and sacrifices his life to save his friends? I cry like a bitch.
You cry like a brother, which is what this game made all of us. Brothers to the end.
One of the video few scenes I've cried to. I've got a bleeding heart for those who've lost their loved ones(lost my wife to cancer) and Dom just thinking only of Maria while his life is about to end is just fucking heartbreaking.
Love you brother
Shes lives and will continue to live in your mind, heart and in the memories you had together, keep your head up, they would have wanted us to live out our lives to the fullest
Very sorry for your loss
Sorry for your loss God bless you
He wasn't thinking only of Maria. I guarantee you he was thinking of Marcus too in that moment.

This still hits hard. This is why we have to protect good stories and not let them be ruined.
Gears has already been ruined, at least we'll always have the masterpiece that is the original trilogy.
Gears of War: E-Day. As the person who always played 2nd player. Thank you for letting me revisit the life of this legend!
Ah man this is the saddest scene I've ever watched in games. Just imagine loosing your best friend a friend that became a brother through trial and hard ship. Man this scene really gets to me.
Man they were family before they even joined the cog. They’ve been friends since they were kids. Dom’s parents even considered Marcus a son.
So simple yet so emotional.

the worst part about this scene, is that it was just that, nothing fancy at all, a pure death, and just like it, you're back into the mad House, getting swarmed by locust. all excitement gone of playing, just like how you'd imagine the characters felt, just dread.
Dynamohoe gow 4 is pretty good though... have you played it?
Well said
All these years later and this still hits hard. Even harder now, if we're being honest. I'll never forget this so long as I live.
Dom was my favourite character... and he had to die :'(''
The amount of emotion put into that scene is extraordinary though.
