  • This is the first episode of a series that I am making called "Construction Rocks." This series will help teach skills useful when building a house. Note: As I mentioned in the video I do not own the music. The first music score is "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly Theme" composed by Ennio Montenegro. The second music score is "Rock This Town" composed by Brian Setzer of the Stray Cats. I also do not own the sound effects.

    Assuming that your rafter beam is a 2x4 you need to cut 3/4" off at the top of your rafter so that your bird-mouth will set on your wall 2x4 even and not half past it.

    It was a very practical and helpful video ....maybe you can help me with a little project that I am working on... ok here it is. I am building a lighthouse lamp 8 sides (octagon ijiji)...but the roof is killing me, can not get it to fit all eight sections it is 8 centimeters on the higher point each section is 10 centimeters high with a base of 5.5 centimeters wide...I would love a 2 centimeters tail.....any advice / I did try with 12 high and 6 wide sections but all I got was a pointy roof with a cero tail.I need to know how to cut the sides of each section so they fit perfectly together ...i tried an angle of 11.3/ 22.5 but failed... somebody said it is just a 45 angle. so each section fits perfectly to the next one .....

    Maybe I'm late to class but my speed square didn't come with instructions. I have always used basic math to find angles. Like 45-15 gives me 30 degrees. Seems accurate enough. Anyone know where I can get the pdf version of the instructions so I can print it out?

    Or seeing as the diagonal of your speed square is 45 degrees you can just Instead use that to mark a 12 pitch rather than pivot your common scale

  • @unitseven7
    @unitseven7 5 лет назад

    Hi John,
    Your pitch would not be true 12/12
    You would need to add on HAP to your length. Once you determine the size of your birds mouth (no more than 1/3) this measurement needs to be added to the rise for the correct pitch to be obtained and to set your ridge board.

  • @hmtrimworks7148
    @hmtrimworks7148 2 года назад

    A rafter cannot be laid out with just a speed square, you would also need a tape measure to measure where the birds mouth would be for a particular building…
    Whereas with a framing square you need nothing but the framing square because you can “step it off” for the length of the rafter

    Easy to understand, although the method to determine the overhang is not right. But probably close enough for most construction. What he did was measure the diagonal on an angle. The measurement would have to be at 90 from the building

      Hi, so if you want to have a rafter A-Frame that is about 60 degrees, the common rafter pitch would be 22. So the pitch measurement ratio would be 22/12.
