They wanted to put tracks so he drives on them and looks perfect drift, but he wanted to try without and did it from first try. Insane stuff. He did a lot of drifting in the movie too. Still remember seeing Tokyo Drift in theaters for the first time. Even if the lead is white I don’t think this movie got enough credit for how progressive it was. It gave us really awesome Asian, especially Asian male representation. It was special to us Asian American teenagers.
This film also boosted the car scene amongst Asian Americans in SoCal culture, and there was such an uptick in Asian dudes driving Fairlady Zs (DK’s car in the film). This film was so big and important amongst SoCal Asian American culture! (I specify SoCal because I don’t know if this influence spread elsewhere)

Also fun fact on the side, the "fisherman" in the blue is Keiichi Tsuchiya also known as the actual Drift King. 5 reasons why I liked Tokyo Drift.
    1. Coming of age story:Sean Boswell goes from a knucklehead to actually thinking before his actions.
Stepping up as an man and not just becoming a better racer.
    2. Drift Racing: more known to some of the world and not as much in the USA, this style of driving became more mainstream dued to this movie and made for good racing sequences.
    3. Shared Universe: It's connected to the other films and we didn't know it till the end.
Months later, Vin Diesel (returning as one of the franchise producers) and Paul Walker announced F and F 4.
    4. Video Games:at home and in the arcades, you could become part of the phenomenon.
Although Dom's crew in the films were later called the Fast Family, it was in the games that they were first called "Team Furious" and I loved that name.
    5. The director:Justin Lin.
This would be the first of 6 sequels that he would helm for the franchise.

As a young Asian American, this movie was so amazing to us and now looking back it was because it showed Asians as cool and was before F&F series went beyond the realm of reality with motorcycles flying off cliffs XD Me and my bro indeed had big dreams of street drifting in Tokyo after seeing this tho lol

I love when F&F really focuses on the cars and racing. But if you think about it, if that's all the movies were about, it would've became repetitive and given how good Dom and the crew are at racing they'd probably smoke all the competition until there's no one left to race

In hindsight knowing some information if I'm not mistaken one of the reasons why Sean's Monte Carlo is my favorite is because it was a really built car the original it wasn't just made up of all mules pushing golf cart motors.
Sure there were stunt copies with small blocks but the hero one had like a built NASCAR engine with like 800+ horsepower.
it's an underdog for sure but I just love how beautiful it is Dom would really take a liking to that kid, going based off the fast 9 trailer maybe not 😵🤣
it just goes to show how clueless Daddy's money driving jock is if he doesn't feel the least bit intimidated by that car and how it sounds when it started up, and he clearly wasn't paying attention in math if he thinks 500 stock on skinnies is better than 800 on NASCAR tires and gutted.
Nevertheless I wish the Monte Carlo didn't start up right away I wish it had stalled and tried to turn over and maybe smoked to give everyone a chance to laugh at him before it roars to life and shuts everyone down in fear

This movie gets a lot of hate out of the entire series but to me this just gets better every time they make a new one that's even less based in reality. This is the only one in the franchise that really focused on racing. Yeah there's some mafia stuff going on but the movie starts with a race, introduces the antagonist with a race, trains the protagonist with races, and the finale is a race. You cant say that about any other FF movie.
