Great interview! A subject close to my heart! I've been feeding the birds in my backyard for at least 8 years now. I usually put food out around 8am every day, so the birds are trained now to show up around that time. The sound can be deafening at times! Blue jays in particular have a multitude of sounds that they can make, and I learned to mimic a few of them. If I do it just right, I can start a bird call-and-response around the neighborhood. The most exciting bird call I've heard is the pileated woodpecker, which passes through the area a couple times a year. Their "yak yak yak yak" is unmistakable. It's incredibly peaceful to feed the birds, grab a cup of coffee, and enjoy their presence.
