I've seen another person realize the activities the innies would never get to experience are a major focus of the waffle party. Eating Breakfast , lust , going home, sleep . All things the innie would not have an experience of because it fell outside of work hours.
I keep thinking about “CLEAN SLATE” in that list starting with “BEEHIVE” in the security room. Will that be used as a way to bring the severed employees back to the way they were prior to their revolt?
it's also interesting how Jame Eagan wears a very conservative suit, almost collarless.. very similar to the suits they wear in the movie Aliens. so kind of a futuristic look, while everyone else looks stuck in the past. Eagan also wearing that suit on his statue - Episode 3 : In Perpetuity
One thing I haven't seen anyone referencing is the occult or witchcraft references. The Four Tempers we see during the waffle party seem to correspond to the Maiden, the Mother, and the Crone, as well as the sacrificial goat, which are all pretty flagrant references to witchcraft. Beyond that, we know Kier started Lumon by mixing poultices and elixers as medicines, very much like a witch brewing potions. What if the initial form of severance practiced by the Eagan line to preserve the minds of their ancestors was via ritualistic or occult means?
Branch transfer is the most intriguing one to me because it's either the least euphemistic, and it does what it says on the tin, or it somehow entails killing all of the innies.
One curiosity: It has been well commented on that the technology both within and outside of Lumen seems to range between the 70s and early 90s. Monitors, cars, etc. The only obvious exception is the brain chip itself. What was curious to me was all of the very advanced 3D printers in O&D. They seem at odds with the rest of the show. It seem, to me, that the entire town, or region, has been held down by Lumon, not allowed to advance in technology -- except Lumon itself. It's like the idea of technology belonging only to the priest -- or ruling class.
Maybe they aren’t just severed in the office maybeeee both of these places are severed realms. I just hope this series doesn’t end like a horror film, where there’s no resolution and the bad guy wins 😆
I think that 'severance' was a philosophy first, practiced by Eagan devotees -- and Cobel/Selvig is a practitioner of this. it is only in recent times that the technology is available to make this complete -- and enforceable for others.
Here’s some food for thought that I haven’t seen discussed before: whereas Irving refers to his colleagues as “Kids” several times… perhaps an unconscious reference to the baby goats? (Young goats are called kids) they pulled a similar thing with the name of his dog, Radar. There’s also the anthropomorphic goat Temper figure. I don’t think the writers were being serious when they said they “threw goats in there” arbitrarily. Also, to your point about the repetition of Fours, it’s very much giving Kraftwerk vibes. Would be cool to hear some more influence on the soundtrack from that sector of music since it’s so suitable to the aesthetic.
The biggest question no one ever asks, is "why does Lumon keep innies in the dark, when their outies can't remember anything anyway?" They've got the world's BEST NDA, so there should be no need for all the secrecy among innies.
PE may b the province code but on mail, it's written Province of PE, Canada. Or: P.PE, Canada. I was born in the Province of Quebec, Canada, and the addresses were always written: example: 71 Village Drive, P.Q., H9B 1M8, Canada@@veroniquebellamy4741
it has characteristics of both. For instance there's some parallels to auditing, but the whole forgive me for the harm I have caused this world is very much Christianty. All that nonsense about being a sinner who's born into sin and Jesus died for your sins is the same thing. The worship of Kier and God parallels as well. There's the painting of Kier whipping a goat and some people, which he gets a pass because he's Kier whereas God gets a pass for murdering and vengeful ways because he's God. Do as I say, not as I do.
Great review! I can't wait till season 2. I wonder if the Innie have any connections to their outies dreams? Or if the Innie's dream when they are shut off, Cause otherwise they are just in a constant state of being awake all the time. Kind of crazy to think about.
The indies don't exist once they are "shut off." They share a body with their outie, so they become the outlet when they leave the office, therfore innies can't dream and they only experience being awake. Mark S mentioned that in an episode, I think the 1st episode, when talking to Helly about focusing on noticing the effects of sleep since they don't get to experience it.
2:27 you do get what state they’re in on the envelope in Irv’s house, it says “PE”, which I don’t think is a mistake. I think they’re living in some sort of simulation, or the Eagans had a new territory created?
The creators of the show have stated the world of severance is very similar to our world, but it is not the same. They want it to be both nostalgic and futuristic. Allows them to mix things up and give the show such a unique style.
Regarding Helly/Helena possibly being next in line for Lumon CEO, I think the scene in the perpetuity wing highlighting the first woman to be CEO may be there to establish to the audience that it's not a purely patriarchal system, therefore implying the possibily of her inheritance.
2:14 At one point we see someones address written out, with the state being abbreviated as PE. PE is not the abbreviation of any actual US state. So either its a fictional state, or in this world Pennsylvania uses a different abbreviation, or something. Maybe its named "Pennsylvenie" instead of Pennsylvania.
Ood theories! I enjoyed it, csn see you are really enthusiastic about it But it also will be better if you are not cutting off the guest when he is giving opinion ya... Like he is gking to talk more about tgr
Like he was trying to talk more about mark abd you just cut off and jump to pefey... Haha great thoried, but will be better if you make a schedule or list of what you wanna talk about and go through it, let the guest speak and finish anf then give your opinion.. But great theories! I enjoyed them
I have a feeling Mark caused the accident that killed his wife which is why he is so devastated and wants to go through severance. Also probably why he drinks so much. Also I think Irv has been through the severance process a few times before. Devan also seems too smart to be with Ricken ie Rick N which I feel is also severed along with his friends. The whole town is weird lol.

Sort of like the Good Place?
I haven’t seen The Good Place … so, I can’t say.
@@williamfrederickiii1683yes just like the good place! this was one of my theories!

Severance takes place in the fictional town of Kier, PE. So yes, it is basically like an Egan Town as it was named after Lumons cult leader, Kier Egan

Definitely occult related topics. Separation from the world, different departments, manual of rules, even the break room tactics, and reward basis.
The heck is freeze frame? And branch transfer? Do they just have husks of people waiting for transfer?
Branch transfer is the most intriguing one to me because it's either the least euphemistic, and it does what it says on the tin, or it somehow entails killing all of the innies.
When I think "freezeframe" I think of paralyzing someone who has a chip in them. Maybe to cause a car accident, for example.

The state abbreviation is PE on a letter to Irving. No state like that - alternate reality?
The Revolving also reminds me of Logan's Run, an excellent dystopian sci-fi movie
Had the same thought.

Ah , just now gettting to the Ram part I was mistaken about the temper

There were a couple shots with addresses showing their state abbreviation as “PE”… hmmm….
What if it’s not a state abbreviation but a province? PE = Prince Edward Island, Canada

Lumin is closer to Scientology more than Christianity

The surgeon doing Helly’s procedure looked like Dylan.

Milcheck reminds me of Carl Anderson's Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar.
I wonder if that's on purpose

This is good insight thanks guys
Wow this was good! Thank you
Why Helli R and not Helli E? Where is/was her marriage partner?
The lists in the ops center apparently have her as Helena Riggs. So at least there's a name to the initial. And it's not Riken!
Because it would be a giveaway.

2:24 fuck they did say what state it was but I totally forgot. It has to do with the company name
It was PE but they never said the full name. Someone said it could be province of eagan
Possible Prince Edward Island in Canada
They mention upstairs alot so maybe they work they are doing have something to do with the other levels
Kier, PE in the address on the envelope. PE = Prince Edward Island, Canada.
No. PEI is the postal code for Pronce Edward isl
Pebraska. Paine. Pelaware.
The Testing Floor...
Only some people will get the Volvo stuff lol
The 4 Tempers...
i get cultish vibes and i get christianity vibes.. sir what’s the difference? 😂
