Fr Seraphim Aldea from Mull Monastery - the Orthodox Monastery of All Celtic Saints on the Isle of Mull in Scotland - continues his talk about Prayer by night. How to keep vigil? How to watch and pray? How to pray at night?
In this third video on the topic, we talk about the practical first steps of prayer by night. We move from being focused on the discipline of our body to focusing on a spiritual understanding of prayer as an act of waiting for Christ. At this stage, we need to expand and refine our spiritual 'tools' - the tools of our prayer, and the tools of our waiting (those moments when prayer does not flow easily). Fr Seraphim offers examples of such 'tools', but these should only act as the starting point for the process of discovering our own, personal ones. Prayer itself will teach prayer to the one who prays.

I am awakened in the middle of the night frequently. Usually around 3 a.m. I am suddenly wide awake and a need, a person, a place are usaully right there in my mind. I obey this prompting and sit up and begin to pray over the person, place or situation. I have found that the more I respond with obedience, the more often it happens. The Lord is seeking those who will watch in the night. There are times when it is heavy, almost frightening, but Praise and giving the Lord glory from my lips pushes back the darkness. Be encouraged brothers and sisters, you don't pray alone. The Lord is a very present help in times of trouble.

Humility can be practised. Pride is something that we all need to eliminate from our lives, and one certain way of pushing it out of our attitude, our words and our actions is by replacing it with words of humility, actions of humility and an attitude of humility. Some say "Oh, if I just 'say' something humble, it is false" but often our pride is false as well. We need to train the flesh to humble itself, renew our mind and cleanse our lips. We need to actively pursue righteousness.

I pray the rosary when i wake up at night. My sleep cycle is very erratic...instead of having bad thoughts or anxiety I pray and I see how this is improving my misery. I also have a book of prayers, I write by hand but I love this idea of making the booklets like you. I will collect prayers according to themes as well. Amazing. Active Contemplatives have intensely demanding work of service such as teaching and caregiving. Thank you Father for acknowledging the best way to pray vigils so that one might pray at night but closer to morning. There were times when I couldn't go back to sleep. However, holy chants prayed and played softly. This is a prayerful way to sleep and awaken i feel. Thank you Fr for this video.

Father, I can't begin to tell you how thankful I am for these videos on night time prayer. I have been praying at night for quite a while now with mixed results. There are nights when prayer just flows...I can feel the Holy Spirit. I can see my sins clearly, or I feel very close to God and I am in tears just from a feeling of brimming over of love of God. The next morning I feel so thankful. I feel like my dryness has passed, and I am really communicating with God instead of just repeating prayers. But then this will be followed by nights where I keep losing my train of thought. Sometimes I even seem to forget the word of prayers I've said thousands of times. It seems like I am just unable to pray. Then I get discouraged and wonder what I am doing wrong. Your video pointed out to me that every night won't be the same...something no other video on prayer has ever mentioned. I've seen hundreds of videos on prayer, and they make it sound like the progress in your spiritual life is like learning math, eg. Once your doing algebra, you don't have a night where you forget your multiplication tables. I thought that even though I've been praying for years, that I hadn't made any spiritual progress because of these nights I can't concentrate on prayer.
During these times of dryness, I copied the book of Psalms out by hand, and also learned how to write and say the prayers in Hebrew. Now I know that it is a tool I can use during a nighttime vigil and that it's ok. There are no words for how much you have relieved my mind, and made me see I was normal, and that these struggles are normal. Please know you have helped at least one person tremendously. If you might ever have a moment where you are referring to your list of names to pray for, my name is Cheryl. I would be indebted to you if you would pray that the Holy Spirit would help me to advance in the spiritual life and grow closer to God.

Sometimes God simply "forces" me for a night prayer.. I just can't sleep without any reason, so I have a choice : to pray or to fear and deny .. and nowadays I usually chose to pray :) it is hard sometimes but further fruits are delectable .. oh thank you Lord. And my favourite way is to worship Lord in all may life circumstances and events, whatever - pleasant ot unpleasant, joy and pain - and you know what ? If Ido it.. my life changes and blessing comes to me.. and miracles happen.. and only thing I do is blessing Lord and thank all the time.. with no words, just with my heart :) Try it , have gtrust in Jesus and try it, despite everything keep trying :) and you'll se miracles :) God bless you

You not only believe in God but instead you believe God and His Word which is alive.
You do everything you can to find out about His/Their character by reading the Holy Bible. (Seek God almighty with all your heartYou love God the Son)
You talk to God preferably daily because that is what He enjoyed in the Garden of Eden, talking to Adam.
And you pray for others and blessing others.
You forgive others 77 times 7.
And you hate to sin and try to avoid it at all cost.
You start changing and as an example: you become patient, more loving and helping others
You do no need teachers, thereby avoiding human interpretations, because when you accept the Holy Spirit as your Guide and Helper, you can ask Him directly and He will reveal the meaning of what you have read. The only 1 true friend and Master in life.

I know how difficult it must be to teach other the spiritual path and hiding our own virtues at the same time. I appreciate it so very much dear Father Seraphim, that You choose to share the vademecum of theosis with all of us especially layman, that have no access to the monastic rules nor Holy Fathers like you do. The night prayer advice I'll keep it close to my heart, like your other great words about fasting. Lately I was troubled with a few questions that I didn't dare to ask my spiritual father cause he is very very ill and it would be selfish of me to do so. I thought maybe God will put someone on my path, who will gladly help to understand what's happening to me. I pray unceasingly since many years now and I noticed my life changed in many ways. For example whole my life I felt inner dissonance, had feeling of being broken, but since 1 ago I started to feel complete, in one piece so to say. Peace of heart I guard with all my energy. My reactions changed, I see bad or happy things happen and react to it with same way: inner peace. I know God allowed it to happen so it must be good...what troubled me lately was lack of emotions and certain emptiness inside me. I used to cry while praying before but now I rarely do so and when I confess my sins I search for this certain humble repenting "tear" but instead just peace.... i pray while working and doing other things. I am sick in my back since a few years now and now feel blessed to wear this cross and learn meekness and patience. I ask God for the healing cause I do as Christ told us: ask and you'll receive. I feel I healed a lot already but biggest miracle is the inner peace. Is the feeling of emptiness a part of the process and what is the next step? ☦

Please pray for my son and me and for my late husband
I only pray when waking up a short prayer from book and I pray at night before sleep for around 1,5-2 hours, mostly reading book prayer and doing my law and a shorter version of praying from heart which used to be all I do, but these two hours have become a burden, I don't enjoy reading from book but I was asked to read these prayers and do a law, I only enjoy talking to God type of prayer, I ended up skipping this 1,5-2 hour prayer lately because I would be too tired before sleep and not really looking forward for rushing the prayers (not respectful) or reading long prayer from book.

Bless Father Seraphim , God is getting me up at thee every morning. I I fight Him often, Scrooge fighting the ghosts which let to his repentece, but I'm finding it a great practice.
May Christ bless you, dear Deborah. the more you listen to this Power that wakes you up, the more you struggle to obey Him and wake up to pray (even for just 5 or 10 minutes), the more clear the voice of God will grow in time. The more we teach ourselves not to hear these callings and not to obey Him, the more we 'succeed' in this attempt and we risk growing deaf to His Voice. Do the little thing that is in your power, and Christ will step in and fulfil with His Power what is beyond you. May we all be blessed, dear one.

Do you have any prayers compiled in a book or a booklet that would help in my vigil, maybe something more like that you have mentioned during your video. I am trying to keep the regular daily prayer but it is somehow unorganised, altering between psalms or cathisms and Akatists or random prayers. Listening to your video as a lay man I have found it “attractive” spiritually to start keeping Vigil( according to my own spiritual strength) but I feel like I step into an alien realm. For the prayers of my dear Saint Protector Sophrony of Essex and of the Holy Mother I have found myself in the “pursuit” of God but I cannot simply manage to keep my daily life to the level Christ has commanded or to follow the Saints example and I feel at times discouraged, however I positively feel that I should try to pray at night but I know I would feel discouraged not knowing what prayers I should “approach”. Can you please post a link where I could order some adequate book of prayers particularly for the Vigil. Thank you very much

I've been struggling to make this happen for a while and God helped me and have been doing it almost for the past 5 months .But, I'm just wondering whether it is best to get up @3:00am instead of 4am from the Biblical stand point?
