- y2k or not? y2k is a craze that took over pop culture in the late 90’s and early 000’s but is now becoming a catch all term for the entire 2000s decade.

Let's get it straight:
Late 90s - 2002 - Y2K
2003-2007 - McBling
2008 - 2012 - Swag era
Respectable, but Y2K definitely didn’t last all the way to 2002
@@sosamanotf642 I agreed with someone down below in the comments that 9/11 essentially ended Y2K, but I still included 2002 in my comment, as in 2002 Kylie Minogue's Fever album and its corresponding singles, Can't Get You Out of My Head, In My Eyes and Love at First Sight were everywhere and they all had very strong Y2K aesthetic. Damn, fever album cover is considered a definite Y2K album cover!

Exactly.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. By sep 11th it was the turning point.
Thank you. I remember being terrified as a kid during that time. I don't remember nothing fun.
@@twannifufu I like to think about it American Presidents regarding the eras, too. Bill Clinton was in office? Y2K. George W Bush was in office? McBling. Obama was in office? I've seen people misunderstand Y2K on the Internet too and get butt hurt when those who've lived through the era call it out. There is a huge cultural difference between y2k and mid 2000's.
They really do and I don't get it. I've even had gen z kids who get mad when you say millennials were known for "edgelord" humor due to the popular TV shows at the time which is a huge difference from today's humor/comedy and they get so mad. Like yall were still in diapers how you gonna tell me and more importantly why you upset...it ain't that deep lmao
Damn I really thought I was actually alive for that (born 2002) but nope :(
@@winglessfairy564 you don't appreciate the era you are born into until you are older and it becomes nostalgic/throwback. When I was a teen, we all wished we lived through the 60's.

Who remembers Janet Jackson's "Doesn't Really Matter" Video
Nobody gonna talk about how MICHAEL & JANET SCREAM is basically the inspiration for TLC scrubs video … and the START OF FUTURISTIC MUSIC VIDEO TRENDS
Right - Mark Romanek's video for "Scream" was the precursor to the Y2K aesthetic movement in music videos.

@@xBINARYGODx1996-very early 2004 is much better.
It’s getting to the point where artist are leaning heavily on older eras to push forward because it’s no authenticity now. younger generations are obsessed with older music and past decades because it’s effort put forth. Nothing seems authentic now or seems as if everyone is following the same trend. Just imo.
y2k is more a transitional era to the early 2000’s ppl think it’s the whole 2000’s decade. Destinys child whole run basically represents y2k. Or brandys career peak.
The Y2K bug is a practical example of active prevention being misunderstood in hindsight as fear-mongering. There was a threat, it was mitigated, it doesn't mean there was never a threat. Coders and the likes were putting in crazy ungodly hours to work on all sorts of fixes. The general public just didn't know all the work done in the background.
It depended on the company. My dad was not working overtime or on call anymore than his regular schedule. He said it was fear mongering then.

The Y2K era is really 1997-2002.
The early '00s (2000-2004)
Mid '00s (2005 & 2006)
Late '00s (2007-2009)
I felt 2004-2005 was the mid-00s period where 2006 could be included
It's crazy how the world through media at least looks more futuristic than now 😂😂
Video for Doesn't Really Matter by Janet Jackson is so y2k to me
I think Ice spice naming her album y2k is so she can profit off of something that’s trending rn, she knew it’d grab ppls attention especially gen z (mainly her audience) I doubt she put much thought behind the whole aesthetic which makes me think less of her as an artist, how are you gonna name an album & having nothing that correlates to it? Just makes me think she doesn’t take her craft seriously & she’s just in it for the quick cash grab & not acc talented artistically.
I get the whole aesthetic in her fashion perhaps, but even then I’d say she’s more of Mcbling aesthetic, I don’t see anything futuristic or y2k about her music / fashion.
@@Datgirl.- The point "she doesn't...talented artistically." is true as she is an industry plant.
not a fan of ice spice but she was born January 1st 2000 so that could be why.
Her album is named y2k because she's born in the year 2000 nothing to do with theny2k aesthetic

Y2k and McBling eras are soooo different but of course I was alive back then. I was in middle school once mcbling was in full swing. I think of trashy, gaudy, loud, cheetah print, layered colorful tank tops, oversized sunglasses, the hair bump and hello kitty chains and silly bandz and jersey shore (later on) 😂 i cringe so hard seeing mcbling outfits but it comes from a place of tween/early teen embarrassment for partaking in those trends myself. However, i loooove when the younger folks post their mcbling fits. I just can’t do it for myself 😂😂 but i will partake in y2k fashion as i was a baby/toddler the first go around
Y2k and McBling Combined is just so stunnnning
Futuristic stuff mixed with pink glitter stuff is fckn ICONIC
When ppl (not all but most) started lumping in media from 2005 - 2009 as “early 2000s” or Y2K I knew something was off.
Yep, I hate that and always have to correct it. It annoys me to know end. They call everything 'early 2000s.'
Michael and Janet’s SCREAM video was very futuristic too! I think it inspired a lot of the Y2K visuals from other artists.
I’m 30 and I absolutely love everything Y2K because it’s what I grew up on. But honestly, I’m really over this “Y2K” trend and am ready for it to end. It’s been played out and misused like crazy, and doesn’t feel authentic.
Missy was doing the Black Girl nerd thing way back in the day. We lost our minds back in the day when she did a Megaman Video. Girls might not have gotten back in the day but boys knew what that aesthetic was. Missy is really the Creative Genius that we think some of these Modern Artist are. Also, don’t be fooled. We all thought her voice was sexy too. 😊 I used to love Airplane ha ha.
I was born the year 2000, the year everyone thought the world would end. Thankfully the world never ended and I’m blessed to be alive today!
Britney and Aaliyah super iconic Queens. Even until this day if i see and Aaliyah tribute or post I always take time and appreciate her.
As someone who was on the board of y2k aesthetic institute and mcbling aesthetic research, one thing that bugs me is that we don’t acknowledge Post2k which is the bridge from y2k to mcbling, roughly 99-2003. We saw a bizarre mix of y2k into early mcbling in strange ways. Y2k hair and make up but outfits were more mcbling in style but with some y2k colors mixed in until we got to head to toe mcbling. By 2007-8 most y2k colors were replaced by earthy or like nudes.
This is what confuses people and blurs the eras together in a way that represents the miseducation imo.
Also
Y2k was even seen in the early 90s like in madonnas bedtime stories video. Specifically one scene where she is wearing silver metallic and looks cyborg esque.
“Commentator Azalea Banks” 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
Am I the only one who LOVES it when Honest posts videos? 😂❤
I was a kid on New Year’s Eve in 1999 and I remember going to the store with my mom to grab some stuff and seeing so many empty shelves; very similar to how empty the shelves were during the pandemic. So many people actually thought that the world was gonna end on January 1, 2000. It’s very weird to me seeing Y2K be represented by things that are a stark contrast to what it really was. Especially when I grew up during that time and remember it being a futuristic craze. Everything was futuristic. I even had this baby pink and silver puffer and the shiny silver adidas shoes when I was a kid. Even putting glitter in my hair and on my arms and face too. Everything was silver and futuristic and glittery.
In my opinion people on social media use the terms y2k, y2k aesthetic, 2000s, alt, alternative predominantly even if the style is more 2006 or late 2000s because hashtags like McBling, Harajuku, RomCom and Cybercore don't have as much prominence. It all goes down to what hashtag is the most popular or relevant in our algorithms. The more niche groups and subculture fashion/style of the 2000s and y2k don't have strong prominence in the algorithms compared to 2000s, y2k, grunge. So using hashtag like #scene #emo #hyperfeminine #cybercore #mcbling #romcomcore will only allow a small group of people to see your content whereas #y2k #2000s #alt will allow for grander exposure. And with these platforms: tiktok, insta, youtube where everyone wants to be see this definitely plays a role.
People who call the 2000s y2k irritate me so much, y2k means the year 2000, and the era itself runs from the late 90s to pre 9/11
Everytime someone says "y2k stands for year 2000s" when im corecting them for mistaking it with mcbling style, i die
frr same here ppl on tiktok cant tell the difference between one year and an entire decade lmaoo i keep telling them it stands for the YEAR "2000" and not the entire decade
Did you just say “fear monJering”?! 😂

Fan mail was the first album o had a kid. My older cousin gave it to me. I was 7. Too young probably but it was what shifted me into loving music the way I do. The first track was ahead of its time.
At one point i thought y2k was the whole decade of 2000-2009 but then i realized it stands for the year 2000.
I remember my family had a huge new years party 1999. I was only 6yrs old but all i remember my cousins and i partying like were gonna die at midnight.. I remembee rhere was like idk an uncertainty about if things will still work or not once we enter 2000s.

Remember I was 3 during the Y2K Scare in 99. I was born 96. Us born in the mid-90s have no or vague memories of the late 90s. Plus 2000 was never the millennium. Thr true millennium was 2001. Yet people celebrsted it a complete year too early. 2024 is the pan ultimate yesr of the first quarter of the 21st century. Y2K and 2-0-12 were never the end of the world. Just fesrmongering over a meteorite to hit the Esrth and a Mayan calendsr that resets 52 Yesrs after December 12th 2012(when I was 16). Next will be the 2-0-38 scsre after Y2K scare and 2-0-12 scare. Thr Y2K bug was never the extinction of mankind on planet Esrth. Yet people panicked over the results of the year 00 with computers. People thought there would be a meteorite to end us all. Doom and panic for us all on planet Esrth. Yet it never happened. Despite BSB Millennium album, Fan Mail Scrubs, Opps I Did It Again, JLO, and Missy Elliot Bitch. Playing onto the fesr just like 20-12’a fesr with Kesha Lady Gaga and Britney again. Both times fesr and panic at the strike on midnight.

Hmmm, back in the day they would think of all sorts of spacey/future like things as well when technology was booming, but I guess the Y2K scare did kind of fuel the spacey look into clothes, music&movies even more! Which for some crazy reason I never thought of the Y2K as the main reason though.. I thought it was just mostly fashion etc repeating itself but modifying it a bit. They're really pushing everything electronical/spacey again.
Azelia was playing with y2k style a decade ago, so it's kind of perfect she said something on it.

A lot of the time these eras being around the middle of a given decade and not he very beginning of the like a lot of people may think trying to categories them in a way that neatly follows the names some are given e.g. as explained in the video Y2K began mid to late 90s and ended in the actually 00s. Thinking of the music that began the 90s is remembering the grudge rock and ballads and end of the mid 80s style of synth Pop with gated snare drums and orchestral hits.
JANET JACKSON WAS THE Y2K QUEEN IN ‘DOESNT MATTER’ 🤖🛸
Hi Honest can you make a video on George Michael and his impact on the music industry similar to a documentary. Can you also make a Eternal Sunshine review please. 💚😁

No need to tell me what Y2K is. I was 15 going on 16 at the turn of the millenia. Do you even know what that means? What a time to be a teenager! What a time to be coming of age ❤
Remember Will Smith's "Willennium"? He went all in on Y2K as well.
Yes you better recognize TLC the legends!!!
clock it !!!
Every generation can be defined by certain attitudes and philosophies informed by their collective foundational media, global events, and the shadows cast by the previous generation. A lot of what's said about millennials has been pushed onto Gen Z because some people haven't realized 15-20 years have passed since they wrote their original thinkpieces about the "me generation." But not many have nailed the actual Gen Z mindset.
If Gen Z has one negative trait that defines it, it would be Extreme Irreverence™. Not just defiance on principle of challenging structural power and breaking cycles, but also, unfortunately, a complete disregard for substance, history, and perspective. It's this thinking that has people saying, unironically, "How did free condoms become a thing instead of free menstrual products?" and "People who call their bf/gf their 'partner' and then they're straight irk me fr, it's giving bait" and "idc if the BDS is composed of veteran advocates, protestors, freedom fighters, and sociology experts who've spent years perfecting their strategies around boycotts and lobbying and media blitz to affect positive change; I'm going to do what I think will work because this method of protest outside their boycott guidelines gives me catharsis" and weaponizing therapy-speak that creates barriers in relationships. That's why they'll take a word that people are still using in daily conversation, misunderstand what it means, never correct themselves, and just run wild with a new meaning. POV doesn't mean point-of-view anymore because the zoomers said so. Twink doesn't mean twink anymore, in fact it's now shorthand for the f-slur to sneak around social media censors, because the zoomers said so. Y2K isn't this hyper-specific cultural phenomenon between '98 and '01 anymore, it's Sharpay Evans and Barbie and pink Razrs because the zoomers said so.
How can you communicate with people who just believe language is interchangeable?
So are you saying that y2k aesthetic is only futuristic/spacey cyber punk? Because if anything I think of Cheetah Girls, Bratz, and girly type of aesthetics before i think of aliens idk
Yeah MC Bling aesthetic!!! Ok yeah ig that’s not categorized as y2k. Damn my life was a LIEEEEEE
