If my Tesla lease was up, I'd almost consider it. My round trip to work is around 50 miles, and I can charge free at work. The lease cost is much cheaper than my Tesla.
What an excellent review. I love your chatty observations. Never ever thought of a Prius for some reason. I cannot understand the thinking behind a substantial car not having a decent boot. 👍👍
Hi Jim, been a subscriber for some time and enjoy the content. Spotted this on leasloco last weekend and ordered one on PCH to replace a 38kw Ioniq. Good job it was a positive review 😅.
Thanks for the videos Jim. I finally committed and Tucson being delivered next week. I watched your vids on Gap insurance and contacted them via your link. They said at present there is no gap insurance available and are waiting for the FCA approval. Any advise on going elsewhere or waiting. What would you recommend. Ta Darren
Yes Car to Cover. I didn’t realise it had changed. I have just gone on to ALA. Many thanks Jim. If you are ever in south Lincolnshire pop in for a coffee. 😊Regards Darren
Seeing as they released this in Eire which is a right hand drive country I did think it was strange not making this available in the UK. Gladly they have reversed this decision and it looks a very good (dare I say) conventional alternative to the vast amount of SUV's around. Good review Jim
EPA in the states measure empty battery mpg and get low 50s which is low 60s for UK mpg. How well does it work as a short range EV, can it heat/cool without the engine coming on, can you preheat on cold mornings, can you use a decent amount of power without the engine? I looked at an older Prius PHEV and you couldn’t in that.
I found it great as EV only but only drove for 5/10 miles locally in EV only mode and it was great - I tend to use a PHEVs in Auto most of the time. For me the car should just work without becoming a project and for me this was good in that regard. It's been pretty mild here so perhaps better to ask the heating question to someone in the wilds of Canada or Sweden.
@DefinitelyNotAGuru I can understand it, some big comfortable modern cars float along and without realising can be over the limit. But once you turn it off it should stay off unless you put it back on the human should be in control not the car.
Gutted that a lot of smaller PHEVs such as the new Prius have a low towing capacity. Looking for a new tow car but don’t need an SUV . Will probably end up with a Renault Rafale if the lease stays competitive.
The so-called luxury tax is a big issue here. Excel gives you the things you need, but you have to accept the standard paint. Any other and you go over £40k. And it makes no difference if the dealer gives you a discount, or gives you the paint for “free”. The govt is only interested in the selling price prior to discount. I found this out on my car, and now I have a £600 tax bill each year despite being well below the £40k limit.
@@Brian-om2hh You're right, they don't do a coralla PHEV. Corolla has a circa 1kWh battery for storing braking energy, and smoothing the output from the Atkinson engine.
Based on these videos I’m quite tempted to buy , for the first time, both a lease and and EV, just to experience it, and sell my 8 year old Mokka ( really!).
A lease is probably the best way to go if you fancy a new EV, as technology is progressing steadily, and things will no doubt have moved on quite a bit in 3 years, when most leases end.... Plus with leasing you won't take the full depreciation hit, the leasing company does...
@@Brian-om2hh Agree. I'd never buy with cash, HP or PCP given the depreciation on a £40k car. 2 year lease circa £7k compares favourably to the sunk cost of depreciation!
It will be superbly built, and totally reliable, but it's rather pricy for a plug-in hybrid. Toyota's have got a bit pricy of late. Even the base Corolla is £30k now....
and the corolla is an absolute no-no for company car drivers as the BIK is so high. IIRC would be a loss of more than £300month from an employees tax free allowance. This Prius PHEV would be a fraction of that.
I like this car, looks amazing. And good review…..however, no such thing as a “self charging hybrid”… it’s a “petrol charging hybrid”. Toyota had SCH adverts band in many countries due to the statement being misleading.
Yeah I know; it’s all semantics though. Road tax hasn’t existed for years but 95% of people still call it that. Technically there is a tiny bit of regen playing its part too.
Okay, so it's nice to have a quiet cabin, probably more on the motorway, but when I am town driving I actually want to hear what's going on around me. I guess you can just wind the windows down, but that's not all that fun in bad weather
Height really is restricted in back. Don’t go on your height alone, if you have a longer body in proportion to your legs and you are 510”, you won’t be able to sit fully upright in the back. Also be aware it’s currently in insurance group 31a at the moment in UK. Big shame
I agree but it’s the world in which we live. You get a can of tyre jollop these days in the vast majority of cars. It’s not designed for Uber anymore; they feel the Corolla fits that use way better.
Bland car and that colour is naff. Imagine standing washing that on your driveway on a Sunday. You'd be embarrassed telling your neighbour that was your new car. Toyota cars maybe reliable but they are as exciting as eating a can of cold rice.

Great review Jim - always good to be pleasantly surprised by a car!
It is
Great review pal. This is without a doubt the best looking Prius in the history of Prius's, lol.
It's a low bar but it is a good looking car
Best review in uk, explained everything very well!!!
Wow, thanks! 🙏

It’s amazing VFM at the moment

Great review, as always Jim. Many thanks 👍

I guess you went to the older company I used? I now use ALA.co.uk as they have approval. Use code JIM10 and save 10% 👍

Cheers Darren 👍 funnily enough I took the Prius up to North Norfolk

It did seem odd 👍

nice review Jim, I can often here a bong when you are driving, is it the new speed warning thing?
Yep; it's on EVERY new car and can be turned off but you have to do it every time you get in the car (as you do with every new car)
@DefinitelyNotAGuru I can understand it, some big comfortable modern cars float along and without realising can be over the limit. But once you turn it off it should stay off unless you put it back on the human should be in control not the car.
It’s Euro NCAP’s call, not Toyota.
Hi Question is ut like a EV where if it breaks down it has to be recovered by a flatbed recovery vehicle?
It’s got a petrol engine so I doubt it
Hi Jim, what was the visibility like with the “A” post at such an angle? Looked like an issue from the camera view.
Decent enough for me but I’m a bit of a short arse

👍 yeah, towing folks need to be catered for a bit more eh?
Also does Android Auto wireless for those tech savvy....
👌
The ugly duckling becomes a swan. I will add this to my future list. Great review, Jim.
Quite! Cheers 👍
Can you DC charge it or is it AC only ? Thanks.
It will be AC only. Minimum on 3.6kW. Not sure if it has a 7kW on board charger
@wintersun398 That is disappointing as home charging is not an option for me.
Yep, AC all the way
At least you could buy this car and use it for the next 15 years without a worry
👍

Just lease one (very cheap right now) and don’t worry about it 👍
@ you can’t seem to get an Excel Prius right now from leaseloco
👍👍👍 Nice. Thanks Jim
Thanks 🙏
Do not understand how they managed a boot so small given the new Prius is not exactly a small car.
Batteries and a sloping roof line.
Unfortunately, the boot space on this car is a deal breaker for me, so the Corolla PHEV estate is very likely to be my next car.
I didn't know they did a PHEV Corolla Estate. All those I've looked at have been standard hybrids.

Try a Rav4 phev

I'd seriously consider this but that wee boot is a major issue :(
👍
Maybe the self charging version has more boot space?
Shame only PHEV variant released in UK.
I would guess so 👍

You probably still want a diesel if you’re towing so you’ll hear that I’m sure 😉👍
Cheeky s*d 😂 you know what driving in central London is like. You need to keep your wits about you

these 200+hp hybrid drivetrains are awesome, if only they put it into a regular yaris and call it gr hybrid

great share

Faster 0-60 than my SLK !
😂 mad isn’t it
I always thought the Prius name has and is Bad Bad , why could they have renamed it ….
It’s probably different enough for a new name to be fair
Where’s the spare wheel?
Very few new cars have had a spare wheel for several years
@ I know doesn’t make it right though, and on this even if you bought one there’s nowhere to put it , no use as an uber lol
