Not to mention Lane Stanley and Scott Weiland all amazing song writers, singers and musicians, I was around 13 when all these bands hit the scene , what a time to be alive , todays mainstream music is complete trash

The nineties were such a great time to be young. Everyone was just hanging out enjoying life. No social media and cell phones. Everyone was engaged with each other in real time. Although we didn’t realize it or appreciate it at the time, life was great in the nineties
The thing I love about both of them is that they never really waste notes or embellish solos. Everything is in deliberate service to the song. There's no bloat, and you are just carried on a journey with them.
Kim is one of these secret legends in rock history. Both his tone and his playing are so unique, and yet he always plays in service to the song. No solo is wasted time, no distortion crunch is gratuitous. And such a humble guy. What a supergroup Soundgarden was!
Dude that second solo where he "accents the vocals,".... pure fucking genius. Always the first thing that comes to my mind when someone mentions Black Hole Sun. To me it's such an insanely epically trippy mind explosion when that moment occurs. My body gets chills thinking about it.... have to go listen to it again now.
I got to see Soundgarden at a 1,200 cap venue right around the time that Badmotorfinger was getting a lot of attention. I assume the show was booked before they were too big to play there. The energy was insane. Security was trying to kick out stage divers and Chris would pull them away from security and throw them back in the crowd. Matt Cameron was on fire. Everyone killed it. I’ll never forget that night

A little funny ; I grew up as a teen during late 70’s , early 80’s punk. Lo and behold , I got a second run in the 90’s , being a father of two and the Seattle bands just pulled me back into that world.

Has a young girl the first time I saw and heard Chris Cornell his presence was startling. Watching him evolve from basically a kid to a adult was a privilege and honor. I’m 47 now. Best memories I have of him and his personality was watching him and SG on MTV headbangers go bowling. So funny and full of life and humble. They are so down to earth and just have a genuine love for music. He is so missed.
Seeing these guys makes me realize I'm old even though I still see through the eyes of the boy who listened to these albums when they first released. Damn....time is precious
I never thought about the fact that I had very similar reactions to hearing both songs for the first time. I heard Teen Spirit while driving to meet a friend who was also driving. We got out of our cars and immediately said to each other, "Did you hear that song?!" (we used to listen to the same radio station). With BHS, I was coming home from work when I first heard it. I was so transfixed that I called the radio station as soon as I got home to find out what song it was and who did it. Both bands managed to tap into something that moved so many people so deeply with those amazing songs.
The Day I Tried to Live is another one of those super-sophisticated tracks. The riff is 7 descending power chords at 15/16 tempo, with a beautiful melody going the whole time. I feel like only Soundgarden could really pull that off.
Yup.. radio ruins everything. I've heard it so many times that I forgot what it felt like the first time hearing it but the nostalgic feeling is still there when I want go back to 1994 (age 9 at the time).

what was incredible at the time to me was that the South london dance clubs i occasionally found myself in as a teenager would play Blur There's No Other Way and Nirvana Teen Spirit - and the dance kids in there would go wild and love it. Huge crossover.

Rick. I'm a kid from the 80s born in 69 had a Hard Core band from 84 till 91. I love watching your interviews, it makes me FEEL MAKES ME REMEMBER those days of mosh pits swirling to my tunes and I made the crowd rise and fall with each moment of release.. each piece of tension before dropping another hammer onto them. I've since gone towards a more folk and feeling type. And now with so many kids at home.. well I don't even get to spend the time I'd like in my home built studio.. Never quiet enough ..lol. "full on kevs mum" touring in Australia there was a lot of time spent travelling between shows that cd just played on permanent repeat for the week 😂 and for over 3000 KLM we rocked it ...🦑
I was 17 when I got a bootleg tape of Bleach, then went through the "grunge" (I hate labels but they serve their purpose) phase of music full bore. It's a shame it ended. What a great time to be alive n love music

It's funny, Alice In Chains was considered like a sleazy band by the mainstream back then. That was the era. Just after warning labels had to be put on album covers. It was the time of Shocks Jocks and Shock Rock. Howard Stern and Andrew Dice Clay were the lowest slime on Earth. That's how most people saw it. It's crazy looking back on it now.
I can see thinking Alice in Chains as metal, they really were the most metal sounding of the grunge, but Soundgarden, I think you have to really make a case for that.

He pulled out that CD and could not stop gushing about it. IIRC he kept saying we'd hear more about this band...and Cobain showed up on a later ep wearing dress LOL.
Ive read that Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic heard a demo of Black Hole Sun on January 30, 1994 at Robert Lang. Kurt loved it. They heard that demo before anybody! due to the fact they were in a studio about to record a song and one of the engineers happened to record Soundgarden demo a few days earlier. Kurt put down You Know Your'e Right after hearing that, and added 7 vocal takes to it. I listen to those two back to back often. Sometimes I feel Kurts song would've been song of the year 1994, not Soundgardens, but of course it wasnt released until 2002.
The 90's were awesome,heavy but music that had a very sensitive side to it also,lyrics dealing with issues of loneliness instead of going to a bar to get a root. Nirvana opened the door with Smells Like Teen Spirit,it was that much of a song that the suits bought in to it and we saw alt music take centre stage. Magic times,I call the 90's movement,the USA invasion,all the great alt bands were American at the time.
In music, when it comes to a HUGE, almost instantaneous change, it really truly is pre Smells Like Teen Spirit (and Nevermind as a whole/post Smells Like Teen Spirit. Yes, the whole grunge/alternative thing was something in of itself, lots of albums from great bands in that era that continually pushed it along, but Smells Like Teen Spirit was the ignition that lit that rocket. Total game changer.
I went to the Big Day Out in Australia and on one day i watched The Ramones, Smashing Pumpkins and many other bands. Soundgarden came on at the end of the evening and they blew the joint up. It was a insane show, the lead singer broke every single string on his guitar.
First time a 17 year old me and my cousin heard Smells like Teen Spirit I turned right around in my 87 Honda Accord on route 1 in College Park Md and drove straight to the Record shop near UM and bought the cassette within a matter of 15 minutes
Every Gen X musician knows those Nevermind songs backwards and forwards. And I honestly got burnt out on it years ago. But I still occasionally play the Superunknown album in its entirety and it's still one of the most astonishing albums ever made. I never get tired of it.
I’m not a musician but I was 14 years old when smells like teen Spirit came out. And you’re right I also got burnt out on grunge music a long time ago. Occasionally I’ll go back and listen to it.
Superknown has a lasting power beyond the era I think because Soundgarden were able to work with a broader color pallete musically speaking. They didn't stick with pure primal rhythms like a lot of grunge, and they didn't shy away from incorporating richer, almost Beatle-esque motifs and harmonic turns within the metal-punk-indie formats. And of course Cornell's soulfullness in his voice just doesn't wear you down the same as other angst-vocalists, even when the music is harsh and in your face.

I remember the first time I heard SLTS and Nevermind. I remember where I was and exactly what was happening. The album blew me away. Like nothing I’d ever heard. Similar reaction to appetite for destruction a few years before.
1st time for me ; Eugene Oregon , Green Noise Records the owner just received a box of the lp (from SubPop no less) and put one on "loud" blew me away like nothing prior listened to side 1 and bought it on the spot !

I think “Outshined” blew my mind the most when I first heard it. Black Hole Sun was already too polished and sodden, one of my least favorite Soundgarden songs. But, I absolutely adored SG,, still do.

My maths teacher was also a teen during the late 70s/early 80s punk wave. And when grunge came out he told me it was very reminiscent of that era

In music, when it comes to a HUGE, almost instantaneous change, it really truly is pre Smells Like Teen Spirit (and Nevermind as a whole/post Smells Like Teen Spirit. Yes, the whole grunge/alternative thing was something in of itself, lots of albums from great bands in that era that continually pushed it along, but Smells Like Teen Spirit was the ignition that lit that rocket. Total game changer.

I went to the Big Day Out in Australia and on one day i watched The Ramones, Smashing Pumpkins and many other bands. Soundgarden came on at the end of the evening and they blew the joint up. It was a insane show, the lead singer broke every single string on his guitar.
I was there too mate. Ive got some photos of all those bands in Sydney that hot summer day. Indeed awesome days back then
I remember when them 2 songs came out it was such a breath of fresh air coming off all the hair metal shit that was over played.

First time a 17 year old me and my cousin heard Smells like Teen Spirit I turned right around in my 87 Honda Accord on route 1 in College Park Md and drove straight to the Record shop near UM and bought the cassette within a matter of 15 minutes
Every Gen X musician knows those Nevermind songs backwards and forwards. And I honestly got burnt out on it years ago. But I still occasionally play the Superunknown album in its entirety and it's still one of the most astonishing albums ever made. I never get tired of it.
I’m not a musician but I was 14 years old when smells like teen Spirit came out. And you’re right I also got burnt out on grunge music a long time ago. Occasionally I’ll go back and listen to it.
Superknown has a lasting power beyond the era I think because Soundgarden were able to work with a broader color pallete musically speaking. They didn't stick with pure primal rhythms like a lot of grunge, and they didn't shy away from incorporating richer, almost Beatle-esque motifs and harmonic turns within the metal-punk-indie formats. And of course Cornell's soulfullness in his voice just doesn't wear you down the same as other angst-vocalists, even when the music is harsh and in your face.

Too young. I was born in 1990 and only really knew "grunge" when it was starting to phase out, only as an adult with full access to misic have I fully appreciated the songs from my childhood.

I remember the first time I heard SLTS and Nevermind. I remember where I was and exactly what was happening. The album blew me away. Like nothing I’d ever heard. Similar reaction to appetite for destruction a few years before.

I was just watching this assuming the dude in the red shirt was like a band manager or producer or something. Then they frame them both in close up, and it's like "Oh holy shit! That's Krist Novoselic!" When did the rock heros of my youth turn into my dad!?
Nothing goes together like Sega's Roadrash and soundgarden...i swear they had a whole album on that game.

I think “Outshined” blew my mind the most when I first heard it. Black Hole Sun was already too polished and sodden, one of my least favorite Soundgarden songs. But, I absolutely adored SG,, still do.
