I’ve broken 80 a few times. I’m 70 now and about a 14, but I was a 7 at one time. My main problem is the fact I get quite sore playing so I quit practicing so I can play with my friends. So score has taken a back seat to socializing.

"Coulda Shoulda Woulda" is me and breaking 80 at the moment. My most hilarious attempt was an 82 that included one bunker that took 4 shots with a lob wedge and then one shot to get out with a sand wedge (softer sand than "normal"). Thanks for the tips Al. Mostly, its the 10cm between my ears that is the issue. I have not broken 80 since that one time in the 1997.

I remember being a kid and spending every hour of everyday thinking about or even better, playing football and it was all pure enjoyment and that’s all I want from golf now. A good bit of healthy exercise, fun with friends, the occasional genius shot. I see many ultra competitive golfers but I rarely see many happy ones.

Loved the video. So many points. Practise, after a lesson, so often, a pupil returned to me, after a week, I asked if they'd practised, no time! So, they ended up paying for the same advice a second time! Although aged and can't hit it out of my shadow, still trying to concentrate on the next shot, rather than dwelling on the last one.

One that gets me. 6. Avoid the hero shot and just get the ball back in play. Probably good for saving a couple strokes a round.

About staying in the game, I think the best example of it was recently done in the LPGA where a golfer made the cut on the number, played well, really really well, and won.

Love the style of these tip videos. Once you have the basics of a swing and can hit a ball, so much of it is then in the head, and these videos definitely play to helping with that. The challenge I'm having at the moment is not trying to hit the ball too hard! I'll catch a great drive, then my mad head thinks "well if I really hit the next one it'll go even further".....and that always works!
Genuinely not clicked before that a 4222 yd drive and a 2 foot put count as one shot! 😂

The mental part of the game you talk about is referd to as 'tanking'. Effectively you give up trying so you can protect yourself by internally saying 'well, I wasnt trying so it doesn't matter'. It happens a lot in tennis where higher ranked players start losing to lower ranked and then take this route.

I've recently put the clubs up as there is ZERO confidence anymore and its not fun to play when last season I shot my best scores. Extremely frustrating when you go from your best season to everything being foreign

Don't put them up mate, I quit for 3 years for this reason and I regret it. Yips are real for me. But I find golf is about giving a fuck but not giving a fuck😅. Allow yourself some shit scores with low expectations and it'll come back.

I think I could get very close if I practiced for maybe an hour a day for a few months. For not practicing at all, my driver is pretty good. Not long, but I have a straight predictable flight. Even my chipping game is solid. My weakness is my irons. I tend to never take a divot and pull my shots to the left. They fly straight with no side spin, but I get the club coming outside to in and pull left. I would spend 30min on irons and 30min putting. I can generally read the line but struggle with pace. Obviously because I don’t practice. All of that still leaves me 85-87, so if I had just a couple more solid irons into the green and eliminate a few extra chips, then eliminate maybe 2-3 extra putts. Overall that could be my chance at 80. Then obviously practice a lot more to be better. But I don’t think it would take me a lot to reach 80 from where I am.

    You forgot No.6 - stick to playing 9 holes.😂
Seriously, short game is the thing IMO. Whether you're 36hcp or 3.6, we can all smack it down there somewhere, but getting down in 3 from 150yds or down in 2 from around the green is where the better players lower their scores.
