    VPNs weren't created for encryption purposes; that's a side effect. They were designed to extend the network of a remote destination to a local environment. Think of it logically as a super long cable that allows you to plug your network card into a switch that is very far away.

    • @MickayG
      @MickayG 2 года назад +55

      And the side effect is also not the main reason anymore why people use a VPN provider... it's because of geographically locked content... well at least 9 out of 10 people I know who use VPN use it mainly because of that.

    • @TehStoneMan
      @TehStoneMan 2 года назад +7

      And if you try to search for any information regarding that intended use of a VPN, 9 times out of ten you get hits and ads for these so-called "VPN Providers". - They are NOT VPNs. They may USE a VPN as part of the service they provide, but not actually providing a VPN. It's more of an "Internet Anonymiser".

    A VPN also prevents your ISP from knowing where you're going and what you're doing. It's great for letting you download torrents anonymously without getting sued. It helps block advertisers and big internet conglomerates from getting as much information about you as they otherwise might, depending upon what browser you're using and what other type of protection you are using. It's not for everyone, but it is certainly useful for some of us.

      I agree there Matt. It's not for everyone although how many people are aware of where their info goes when they hit that submit button? I would think that most people would be upset if some stranger is rummaging through letters in your trash can out back or if a solicitor comes to your door asking you for your personal information. It's almost not a 2nd thought when people are putting their info out there over the internet.

    As an IT professional, I agree with what you have said, but an important part you must mention, this information is aimed at the end-user or users using the internet for private use. The VPN is still a very important part of an enterprise environment, making sure that business activity is private and not open to public viewing.

    • @LironSegev

      Absolutely. Personal usage is very different to business usage

    • @moczikgabor
      @moczikgabor 2 года назад +4

      Most of business activity is encrypted anyways, but it rather hides the whole internal network infrastructure from the outside. Actually that's what VPN are intended for in the first place: to make possible of accessing a local network, when you are not there.
      Advertising for home use came later. I mean, decades late. For home use, if you don't want to be in your home network or you don't want to forge your location, then practically there is no use of it.
      It is funny, because for encryption there was no use the first time it started beeing advertised, since almost every decent company already started to use SSL/TLS on almost all protocols a decade ago (worst case, a lot of them since 20 years or so)...

    The two main reasons for using VPNs in today's day and age are to prevent ISPs and network operators from tracking your Internet activity and to change your apparent geolocation.
    Using a privacy browser and following privacy best practices is also essential to conceal one's Internet activity to the fullest extent.

    • @slimdude2011

      Do ISP really care what their subscribers are doing on their computers, phones or whatever, and do they actually have to time to monitor everybody's websites their customers are visiting? I don't think so! All the ISP want is their monthly payments for the use of their services. As long as a person is not doing anything illegal, then you have nothing to worry about, but if you're just browsing the internet and so forth, the ISP doesn't care.

    • @SydBat
      @SydBat Год назад +12

      @@slimdude2011 - yes, ISP's DO care how you use your internet access because they are legally obliged to. This is why, in virtually every country, YOUR data that goes through your ISP can be subpoenaed regardless of what you think you are doing online. So called legality is a diversion, as one country that considers a thing to be illegal can, and do via various treaties, require other countries to provide this information. ALL ISP's are required, by law everywhere, to log every single thing every single customer does while online. A legit VPN encrypts the entire connection from your computer to the destination computer, which means the ISP can only see that you are online, but has absolutely no idea what you are doing. A lot of free 'VPN's' do not encrypt anything.

How much you watch can cause internet providers to throttle your internet speed, and everyone I know users VPN's for watching new movies and TV shows on sites like Cinema HD. So for you to be claiming VPN's are no longer necessary, just shows you have a lack of knowledge about why most people actually use a VPN.

    There is so many use cases for a VPN especially in the context of a small or large business. You can whitelist and blacklist IP addresses, protect your corporate network, university or school. Also traveling is a big headache without a VPN with a static IP, bank not letting you log in, email accounts booting you off, the list goes on. VPNs especially with a personal ip are very useful. Also, you can create your own VPN in the cloud. I trust the VPN more then the local airport or hotel wifi.

    You forgot the most important place to use a VPN, open Wifi Hotspots, with basic software you can pretty much see what everyone is doing in real time. I used to tunnel back to my home and route all internet access through there and then joined the hotspot to conserve mobile data but those are ridiculously easy to see what other are doing. If you really want to be anonymous, you have to run Tor through a VPN, the most secure setup requires your VPN client to be configured to work with Tor, and the only VPN service I would recommend is Swedish provider PrivateVPN.
    The great thing about using PrivateVPN's VPN through Tor feature is that the VPN provider is unable to detect your home IP address when you connect to its servers.
    As a result, it becomes impossible for the VPN to track who you are and what you are doing in real-time.
    This is a useful additional layer of protection against the potential for the VPN to be served a warrant that forces it to begin monitoring traffic. (PrivateVPN is already a no logs service, so it would have no existing connection records or usage logs to hand over to the authorities if it was approached.) Sweden has incredible user privacy laws, just connect to a country that does (do your own research).
    Admittedly, this is an additional privacy measure that most users probably do not require. However, depending on your personal threat model, it is a useful addition if you want high levels of privacy and anonymity online.
    Another benefit of using VPN through Tor (Tor over VPN) is that your apparent IP on the internet is that of the VPN server. This allows you to prevent websites and online services from detecting a Tor exit node (which stops them from blocking you). And allows you to pick the country that you get your outbound IP address in; depending on your needs (to access geo-restricted services, for example).
    Pros
    Because you connect to the VPN server through Tor, the VPN provider cannot ‘see’ your real IP address - only that of the Tor exit node. When combined with an anonymous payment method (such as properly mixed Bitcoins) made anonymously over Tor, this means the VPN provider has no way of identifying you, even if it did keep logs.
    Protection from malicious Tor exit nodes, as data is encrypted by the VPN client before entering (and exiting) the Tor network (although the data is encrypted, your ISP will be able to see that it is heading towards a Tor node).
    Bypasses any blocks on Tor exit nodes.
    Allows you to choose server location (great for geo-spoofing).
    All internet traffic is routed through Tor (even by programs that do not usually support it).
    Cons
    Your VPN provider can see your internet traffic (but has no way to connect it to you)
    Slightly more vulnerable to global end-to-end timing attack as a fixed point in the chain exists (the VPN provider).
    This configuration is usually regarded as more secure since it allows you to maintain complete (and true) anonymity.

Heaven forbid you're the average Joe who wants some layer of privacy. This is also compounded by some real internet bandit who happened to use the same vpn/ip address you just did such that that same ip is now "branded".
