I am a Gamer and I have found that most games will run great with Protonup QT and Proton GE on Linux. Some games wont run, not the fault of the operating system but because of certain game developers refusing to optimize their anti-cheat software to run on Linux. Now with Nvidia supporting Linux with proprietary drivers, things are looking good for Linux gaming.

@@victorsago This is not true. I tried to use Linux a couple of years ago, and the learning curve was too steep. Most users have no idea how to use Terminal to install drivers and get apps to run. Now, the current versions of Zorin and Linux Mint make that unnecessary. Big difference.

    • @victorsago
      @victorsago Месяц назад

@@Alan-rt3se I transitioned to Linux in 2011. There was NO learning curve, none at all! I just installed it, and it ran without any problems whatsoever. There was no need to install any drivers -- everything was already included in the kernel. Neither had I any need to use the terminal in my first few months of Linux use. Ubuntu made it possible for everyone to run Linux. I think it was in 2007 or 2008 that the Ubuntu became an OS that just works. In 2011, I installed Kubuntu and never looked back. And, let me tell you, I had fewer difficulties with Kubuntu than I ever had with Windows. Since then, I've used many different distros: Fedora, CentOS, Manjaro, OpenSUSE, Arch, and Debian (my current distro). Some distros were more difficult to use than others -- I wouldn't recommend Arch for beginners, for example. But Ubuntu and Mint are the go-to distros for beginners, and they just work out of the box. And this has been the case for at least 14 years.

Many open software developers focus largely on function over form, which is understandable because you want the app to work and contain the features you want, but, in my opinion, form often gets too much of the short end of the stick and ends up looking like it was designed for Windows 98.

they were. arguably, most of the useful desktop software was written in the 90s and 2000s. after that, the need for web services became more of a focus, and then the need for mobile ios/android applications. they're all still going on, on all fronts, but the market needs push developers towards one thing and the other.

I'm a Windows 10 user who recently tried out Linux Mint and also Zorin. Two years ago, I had problems with Linux Mint not automatically installing things like drivers for my USB ethernet adapter and the Brave browser. I had to use Terminal, which is a lot like going back to MS-DOS and typing in various commands on the command line. Not my cup of tea! However, I recently tried out the latest version of Zorin, and it automatically installed everything, including the ethernet adapter and the Brave browser. I'm still using Win10 as my main OS because I like it just fine, but all the stuff Microsoft is doing lately with Windows 11 and their intrusive Copilot and even more intrusive Recall feature is making me think I will have to switch to Zorin in the next year or so. Thanks, Liron, for a very timely guide to doing so.

Brave is an odd case where they don't provide a .deb or AppImage on their website. You might be able to find Brave in the Linux Mint Software Manager. Their installation instructions for Linux are atypical in my experience.
Drivers are included in the Linux kernel. What probably happened was your Linux Mint installation image didn't have the latest kernel that had your USB ethernet adapter's driver in it whereas Zorin's did. Also "Install 3rd party drivers" may have left unchecked during your Mint install. Checking it on can fix some of those issues.

So in Lirons mind, at that time, linux users were full of themselves. Based on his content at that time, it did feel like he didn't take linux seriously, but there's been a change in the tune. Probably because of all of the things microsoft has been doing lately. Lots of older machines unable to use windows 11. Ai pointlessness showed into your face. More and more ads put into the OS.

There is the virtualization route that works better in most cases, by installing actual Windows in a VM then running software inside of that. Linux, in my experience, is *virtually* stress free. It tends to be much faster than Windows, and not nearly as buggy as it used to be, with far less time screwing with the Terminal.
As for gaming,... it's come a long way. Utilitarian programs that most people use tend to be ported to Linux, but that tends to come with popularity. The same applies to games. There's a good chance your favorite game will work on Linux if it's popular. If not, there's still a fair chance you can run it in Wine, or Steam's Proton.
I've had very few issues running things in Linux with a few exceptions like Filmora which crashes through emulation. Some games like Minecraft work perfectly as it was actually built in Linux.

    Good video. I would add:
If you primarily use your computer to get online and do basic work processing, etc, there is no reason not to switch to Linux. Do NOT spend one more penny on a Windows machine if you're in that category.
Keep in mind, Mac is Linux at it's base and Windows is transitioning to Linux at it's core so you are going to go to Linux at some point whether you like it or not. IF you use a computer instead of a cell or tablet that is.
Some points... Linux does not use drive letters and Windows does. This can cause an issue seeing a Windows machine from Linux on you local network. From Windows to Linux, you can use Samba and it works great. Another: printers, usually older printers, can be painful on Linux. Generally, newer printers work fine.
If you can't understand Linux, ask your 4 year old grand daughter how to do it. She'll explain it... That's the world we live in and I love it.

For scanning, I set up a network share in Samba, pointed the scanner to it then you just go to the scanner, put the document in, press the scan button and it appears on the network share to be picked up and worked with; just like we had it at work.
As for the Dymo label printer, I've seen drivers for these things in various Linux devices for years. but I couldn't say for certain especially since I don't know your requirements nor which label printer you have.
You could try a live Linux distro on a USB stick to see how far you get.

Hi, I'm using Linux from the 90s, which at the time was quite complicated, didn't really have a GUI to install different programs, but I had experience using the terminal, which I'm very glad for that experience. But today the situation has changed and I don't regret for a moment that I switched to Linux, I think I'm at an average level to a beginner and I think that if Microsoft does these crazy things with Windows I'll end up getting rid of them, because I absolutely won't have further privacy and security. My opinion is that nowadays linux in privacy and security is clearly superior to windows. Thank you !

I don't think the majority of Windows users cannot make the jump to Linux, Liron. imo It's just that most of us have been using the MS ecosystem for so long (school, work and home). Needless to say, regardless of what version we use as our daily driver (Win10 or Win11) it is our 'comfort zone' and the majority will tolerate whatever shenanigans MS imposes. We are indoctrinated not to trust open-source peripherals because they are not as secure and that Linux is too complicated to learn; or that one should be tech savvy to make the jump.
Currently, I'm on Zorin 17 but I'm thinking about making the jump to Mint as it just received a major overhaul with its 21.3 update. So quick question: Should I follow and apply your recommended video "Backing Up Data Wrong" or does the method differentiate for the Distro installs?

Roger that, @@istvantorok4819... I was going to dump Zorin and replace it with Mint but I wasn't sure if I had to go through the same ordeal as I did with Win10. I don't need to keep both OS as I need tons of space for images.
I've been using Gimp for 15+ years, so aside from .jpg and some old .jpeg files, I have mass .pngs transparencies and .icos I've made from scratch. But my rig was starting to bog down so I finally decided to jump on Linux.

I switched about a month ago, used Zorin OS 17 with its gnome interface and switched to Mint cinnamon which has a more Windows style layout. I am now on Mint because of heating issues with my CPU, Mint is a little bit less hot but still can not run certain games.
The one thing people don’t seem to discuss is that my experience is not unique. From what I have read, Linux does not have the same levels of integration with motherboards so SOME computers may experience hotter CPU temperatures.
Only reason I have not gone back to Zorin is because I have Mint installed and have not been bothered yet.

I am always happy to see linux promoted, however, I disagree with what you said about compatibility, compatibility is the #1 problem.
    1. Always check hardware compatibility. The 3 biggest issues are graphics cards (Nvidia is popular but has the absolute worst record of supporting Linux) followed by wireless cards and printers. You can test compatibility by running live before installing.
    2. Software compatibility is also huge. I generally advise people use cross platform apps first, if they are not already, such as Firefox/ Chrome and libre office.
Games can be an issue, but others pointed out solutions.
Software is huge. Adobe, graphic design, many business applications such as Electronic Medical Records, many apps don't run on linux.Linux.
Wine is not a great solution and requires a lot of technical configuration.
