Congratulations Martin! I continue to live vicariously through your channel. How exciting to have a new higher-horsepower engine a three-blade prop to pull you smoothly. Enjoy!
That's awesome Martin, glad for you! Everyone should, at least once in their flying careers, get their hands on a Bonanza. Such a sweet handling plane. Nice job!
At 10:39 in the video the fuel line off the spider need to be corrected to prevent chaffing. Great video and congratulations on the conversion, they do good work.
Yes, enjoyed the smile but also the confidence that Shane and his team bought you No nonsense good old fashioned professionalism from him Cheers Martin
Very nice Martin. My wife and I were just talking about how we wanted to buy a plane for what you spent on you're upgrade! Thank you for sharing the numbers. It adds a lot of perspective to the video.
Hi Carl - nice to hear from you! Yeah, about that price tag... I hope this will remain a once-every-15-years thing, or something like that. Not easy to swallow, but now that it's done I am very happy with how it turned out. Good luck for finding your next airplane! What are you thinking of getting? - Martin
Did anyone else notice something dripped from right behind the vacuum filter at about 12:35 right after Shane removed his hand from the filter housing? Great video....
Congrats, Martin. I knew you would love this. I must admit that the cost took my breath away but I've been out of it a long time. Best of luck and looking forward to more of your excellent vids.
Absolutely beautiful! Hope you’ve been getting to fly a lot. I have one minor concern. In your video at the 10:37 mark the spark plug wires are laying on top of your orange fuel line which are laying on top of the fuel line injector clamp. Over time the edge of the clamp my rub a whole in your fuel line hose. I’m not sure I got all the parts right, I’m not a pilot, but like watching your videos.
John Fletcher I also had Air Plains install the -550 in my 1975 C-182 May of last year. Takeoffs and climb outs are awesome. And with the GAMI’s you can really lean it back and save some gas if you’re in no hurry. Great motor! Cheers!
congrats Martin on your new engine, I wish you safe flying and the same number of landings as takeoffs :) Thanks for taking us all along on your first flight with it.
Great video Martin! So glad all went well. You should be very pleased with your decision to upgrade for many years to come. Looking forward to many more flights with you. Stay safe and healthy.
Great summary of the engine exchange process! I did the same for my Arrow 200 this past winter but the break-in was prolonged a bit because I cannot easily get down to an altitude where 75% power is achievable! My field elevation is 6900' and the nearest 4000' area is a haul from here. Your ordering time was about what I experienced from Air Power too. Probably normal EXCEPT when you are waiting!!! Enjoy your new motor...and the empty wallet!!
Me, too, Mike. Now I have a perfect travel airplane and nowhere to go, thanks to COVID-19. Let's hope things continue to stabilize and open up over time. Best, Martin
Awesome video Martin! I'm doing the same upgrade to my 1990 F33A. My engine just arrived at David Beavers and will go in after the 4th of July. You asked all the questions I had about break-in. I can't wait to see the difference in performance and look forward to your upgrade data.
Congrats Martin...This person knows what he is doing very well and what is clear is that the work is very excellent and I wish I was close to their place where I will approve maintenance in all of their workshops. but unfortunately, I am oversees good luck
Thank you so much for this video and info, I watched it several times. I'm working on the long process of figuring out how to buy my first plane and seriously thinking of a Bonanza. I found a V-tail worth considering but would need a new engine soon so I called up your shop in Pella to price check. Hope you don't mind but I mentioned your video and your engine upgrade. Hoping I can make an airplane purchase a reality sometime in the next two to three years!
Great video! I own and fly an SR22 and it's cool that you did the engine upgrade in Pella...I happened to overnight there when I flew my plane across the country to the west coast a while back...they run a great operation there! I remember being very pleasantly surprised by my stopover there. Thanks for providing all the information! The engine in my plane is at 1360 hours now so I am starting to think about what the process of overhauling my engine would be like (hopefully not for a long time though!!). Take care and keep uploading those videos :)
Hi Derek - yes, Shane runs a great shop in Pella. I've heard other people refer to Haven as the "Bonanza Whisperer". Spoke with Kurtis when I picked up the Bonanza - he did a lot of the work on my airplane, and seems to know what he's talking about. Yes, I would not hesitate to recommend Classic Aviation. - Martin
I like your idea of a west coast trip. COVID-19 has put a damper on many things, including the travels of N70TB this year. But yes, I want to see the better performance at higher altitudes in action. - Martin
Nice flight Martin! And its ready for the trip to Sterman field! That was a serious cash outlay, however now you have a 0hr engine and should have great service all the way to 2000hrs.
Thank you for your videos, I seen your one about the Dutch Bakery just flew into Pella for the first time last week just to visit that bakery. I also work in Information Technology as a IT Security Engineer
Wooow! Some things are priceless and some things we take for granted. But to see your face after you started that engine, that was so great. I'm really happy for you Martin and I look forward to many more great videos! Btw - that bakery looked excellent!!
I just did the exact same thing with the ACFP..... love it!!!! Sooooo Fast I’m not used to it, like 10 knots increase. Many don’t recommend the ACFP but I love it.
I'm torn on the ACFP... never flown a plane (yet) that had one. I have no problem running the mixture manually; maybe I don't know what I'm missing yet. - Martin
Congrats! I'm very jealous... that engine purred like a new kitten, eh? My son and I will be doing this to our Tiger probably next year. Our engine is still running strong with high compression checks as the last annual, (knock on wood). Glad it worked out for you and here's to many more hours in that sweet Bonanza!
Congrats on the new engine, and now with all upgrades you have done in the last two years, it’s just as good as a new plane, enjoy. Would like to know if you are coming to pilot Pete’s sometime, would love to check it out.
Lookin Good...wishing you many happy flying hours with your new engine, and of course, looking forward to any videos you share with us. You're lucky to be tall, you can see over the top of your engine, a plus in that regard for sure. It appeared to me that the ignition wires were sitting on top of one of the orange hoses..could that be a wear issue in the future due to vibration?
Hi Andrew - yes, visibility is no problem for me in the Bonanza. Interestingly, in the Cirrus I sometimes wish I was shorter, as visibility would be better. Regarding the wires: This video is two years old - was fixed long ago. Regards, Martin
Nicely done & congrats. Sounds like a big price tag but much nicer than trying to maintain and upgrade a light twin! You'll also enjoy a boost in value if/when it comes time to sell your plane.
I could have bought a twin for that money, with two working engines. Problem is, flying and maintaining a twin is a lot more expensive than the Bonanza. So while this was a very costly upgrade, it's a one-time charge, and from here on I hope to fly for pretty much the same operating cost as before. - Martin
Is that flexible hose suppose to lay across metal unprotected and unsecured? Is there a new rubber hose impervious to engine vibrations? Check the video at 10:37…🤷♂️😳
I hope your install went as well as mine did. For anyone listening closely in this video, Shane provides a ton of insight into engines and engine break-in here. - Martin
Congratulations Martin. I know the feeling, just also had my engine replaced. However, the workshop recommended a thick mono grade oil for the break-in (as per manual), not a multigrade. Sounds surprising
Martin Pauly thanks. I didn't know there was such thing. Thanks 🙏🏻 Also FYI, I found this guide that proved to be very informative if you don't have it: insightavionics.com/pdf%20files/Continental.pdf
Congrats Martin, it looks/sounds great!! I have to admit my jaw dropped a little at the $$, but it all seems to make sense. Hope you and the fam enjoy!! --gary
What a great engine and Classic Aviation is such a "class" operation. The name is appropriate. How could you want anyone else working on your engine replacement?
Nice video Martin, I like the 550, just watch the cylinder temps on climb out, especially if you decide to lean on climb on a hot day. Cruise climb is a good thing. I hope you have good luck with it.
Hi Martin. Congratulations!! I have a friend with the same year as yours and he is due to replace his engine. I will definitely forward this video to him. I’m sure it will motivate him!!
The 520-to-550 upgrade probably isn't for everyone, Nick. Having said that, if your friend is considering it, NOW would be the time to do it, with the engine being replaced. Regards, Martin
I can't imagine how excited you must have been with the new parts on your toy. I would have been chomping at the bit to get that break in done and get some hours on it,
Hello Martin While you were doing your visual of the IO-550 engine. I observed one of your fuel lines support clamp appears to be misaligned when support the fuel line. The one in question is the fuel line for the front cylinder on the right side. From my view,it appears that the metal clamp and the rubber insulator are not aligned correctly crating a metal to metal contact between the fuel line and the metal of the support clamp. Just to let you know, I am a certified aviation quality assurance inspector Please recheck all clamps to ensure all lines and clamps are not creating chafing.
I wish I could afford doing something like that, but I’m very happy for you and wish nothing but great adventures and memories with your better performing airplane.
I am curious why the OEM does not complete the breakin. Considering the eye-watering cost, it seems that a controlled and monitored pre-delivery break-in would be appropriate. Not sure what I am missing.
Congratulations Martin. Engine overhaul/upgrade is bitter sweet thing to "look forward to". In my Trinidad it'll just be an overhaul, as there isn't an upgrade STC available. A lot of $'s, hopefully it'll give you years of trouble free flying!
Thank you. I must admit I don't know - what engine is in the Trinidad? They look like great airplanes, yet I rarely see one "in the wild" - at least here in the US. - Martin
@@martinpauly IO 540 Lycoming in the Trinidad TB20's, TB21's are the turbo version. I'm in MN so not far away from you. Actually we "crossed paths" one day while I was flying to CHI, you were on with ATC in the same area I was. I'm 51TB so our #'s are similar. We'll meet up at some point, saw you at Osh last year.
We did the same conversion on our F33-A. Good engine and prop set up. Would have had them paint the inside of the cowl doors- makes it a cleaner installation. Hope you have good service with everything.
Hi Martin On the right hand side of engine on the forward cylinder the fuel line retaining clip is twisted and not holding the rubber mount properly. It looks like the clip might be touching the fuel line which could result in chafing thru the line...
What a beautiful Bonanza. Can this upgrade be done with a V tail Bonanza? Seems to me it would add allot to a V tail also. Especially it's short field performance.
@@martinpauly That's awesome. i am just getting back in the seat after 15 years off. Taking lessons and preparing to buy either a V35 or possibly a twin Comache for crossing the gulf. I am tired of flying Commercial and I live in Costa Rica. Short field grass strips mostly. So preparation is a big deal as it should be with all of us. Thank you for the info.
I broke in my IOF-240B5 at 3000 75 % power for an hour and then I stayed at 3000 and every 15 mins went down to 65% for 15 min then went back to 75% for 15 min and then went down to 70% for 15 mins. Was very interesting to hear what folks thought and how they thought it should be done. I used the XC Phillips 20W50 too based on factory recommendation. My new airplane Cessna 400 just had the 550-C put in 150 hours ago and I'm using the XC Phillips 20W50 in it too.
There was almost no weight difference between the two. I looked at the MT propeller, but it was so much more expensive... went with the Hartzell Scimitar instead. - Martin
Beautifully produced video! You're very good at this. I can see how you were gifted at explaining stuff exceptionally well as a teenager already and your books' successes were not just luck ;-) At first Shane seemed not much of a talker but glad to see he warmed up!
Hi Frans, thanks for your comment. Shane is a wealth of knowledge; I am very happy he oversaw my install and was willing to talk about it in the video. This was a bigger project than I first imagined; hopefully it'll provide guidance to others who are thinking of doing this same upgrade. All the best! - Martin
Martin Pauly indeed, an amazing lot of details in know-how both thechnical and practical. Superb workshops with engineers like that are rare and valuable. Great to see you enjoy the upgrade from the first startup of the engine! Best, Frans
Martin, what drove you to make the engine euthanize your old engine now, just hours. or did you have a reliability centered maintenance approach i.e. specific failure mode trigger?
No maintenance issues - the engine wasn't "talking to me" yet, Andy. But 2,600 hours... at some point I think enough is enough. Heaven forbid, if something happens on an engine of 3,000 hours or more. So instead of waiting longer, I pulled the trigger. Could the IO-520 have run another year or two? I believe so, yes, absolutely. - Martin
Congrats I hope it works well for you ,Martin...statistics show failures come early (if they are going to happen at all) please be careful and cognizant of the stats!!
Thanks, JR. I'll be more selective of my flights until I get to know the engine better - e.g. no night flying, no low IMC. So far, everything sounds and feels very good. - Martin
Martin, can you use UPS for your background next time, I'm kinda partial. We are looking at the same engine upgrade from our 520. Once again great informative video. Wish he had a video of extracting the engine. Did you look into buying the engine without the continental fuel injection system and installing Gami's? It is my understand you can't change the tuned induction system. I am sure you did your due diligence on the subject and just curious, thanks again for a great video.
Any issues so far with the new engine Martin? I've heard some things regarding early cylinder replacement on the Continental 550. I have a friend looking at a Lancair Legacy and he was wondering. Many thanks and keep up the great work!
Martin, The smile on your face at start-up was worth the price of admission. We are all so happy for you......
Yes, I think so, too, Steve! 😁
- Martin
Unfortunately this engine died shortly after start up. He still hasn't figured out what's wrong with it
Congratulations Martin! I continue to live vicariously through your channel. How exciting to have a new higher-horsepower engine a three-blade prop to pull you smoothly. Enjoy!
Thank you - I'm loving it, so far everything is working great!

Thanks for the video. It covers information well.
That's awesome Martin, glad for you! Everyone should, at least once in their flying careers, get their hands on a Bonanza. Such a sweet handling plane. Nice job!
I agree, Buck. The Bonanza is a joy to fly. Hard to go back to a Skyhawk or Cherokee once one has gotten used to a Bonanza!
- Martin
Great FBO! Stopped by to see my Grandma there in my Malibu a few months ago and I recognized your voice and Bonanza on the ramp. Enjoy the extra HP.
At 10:39 in the video the fuel line off the spider need to be corrected to prevent chaffing. Great video and congratulations on the conversion, they do good work.

Yes - a drop of water. In the rain, some water can be trapped under the cowling, and when you open the cowling the drops start moving.

Martin Pauly thanks. I didn't know there was such thing. Thanks 🙏🏻 Also FYI, I found this guide that proved to be very informative if you don't have it: insightavionics.com/pdf%20files/Continental.pdf
Great production ! Helpful info as I plan to take my PA 32 with a new zero time engine back into the air.
Congrats Martin, it looks/sounds great!! I have to admit my jaw dropped a little at the $$, but it all seems to make sense. Hope you and the fam enjoy!! --gary
Thank you!

What a thrill to get an engine like that in your airframe. Congrats.
Thank you, Paul. So far the CHTs haven't been an issue, despite the warm weather. But I'll keep an eye on them.

Check that flex fluid line on the fuel line clip edge. Hate to have it cut thru.
@@martinpauly Thanks Martin. I’ll pass it along!
I can't imagine how excited you must have been with the new parts on your toy. I would have been chomping at the bit to get that break in done and get some hours on it,
Yes, I was VERY excited that day. You saw the smile on my face when I felt the acceleration on take-off roll, didn't you?

Hello Martin
While you were doing your visual of the IO-550 engine.
Just to let you know, I am a certified aviation quality assurance inspector
Please recheck all clamps to ensure all lines and clamps are not creating chafing.
Thanks, we'll get that adjusted.

I wish I could afford doing something like that, but I’m very happy for you and wish nothing but great adventures and memories with your better performing airplane.
Thank you!

I am curious why the OEM does not complete the breakin. Considering the eye-watering cost, it seems that a controlled and monitored pre-delivery break-in would be appropriate.
Not sure what I am missing.
Martin, great job. The information and graphics are masterfully presented. Good luck with your new engine!
Great video excellent information by sound individuals very impressed nice work fellows
Thank you, Mr. Archer - glad you enjoyed it!

IO 540 Lycoming in the Trinidad TB20's, TB21's are the turbo version. I'm in MN so not far away from you. Actually we "crossed paths" one day while I was flying to CHI, you were on with ATC in the same area I was. I'm 51TB so our #'s are similar. We'll meet up at some point, saw you at Osh last year.
Oh man ! Christmas all over again !
Yup - that was pretty darn good for a Christmas present!
- Martin
Yes for upgrade ... goood decision! Will be very nice -
We did the same conversion on our F33-A. Good engine and prop set up. Would have had them paint the inside of the cowl doors- makes it a cleaner installation. Hope you have good service with everything.
Thanks. So far everything is working wonderfully.

Yes those fields are wheat. "Winter" wheat is typically planted in the fall and matures to be harvested in late June or early July.
Thank you, Dean - Shane and I just learned something new!
Best,
Martin
Hi Martin On the right hand side of engine on the forward cylinder the fuel line retaining clip is twisted and not holding the rubber mount properly. It looks like the clip might be touching the fuel line which could result in chafing thru the line...
We use the Phillips 20W-50 Martin and have been very satisfied with it.
That was really, really awesome!
Man that engine is a beauty and the prop, what can one say about the prop.....it's an absolute sheeba.
Great video Martin , hope N70TB likes to go faster and you enjoy many flight hours with the new engine and prop .. Safe skies ..
Thank you, Aidan. I look forward to many more flights in N70TB.

Really nice to hear Shane say at 2:21 postive rate AND no usable runway, gear up...
A lot of good nuggets of knowledge packed in that video. Thanks!
Thanks for noticing, Loren. For anyone listening closely, Shane provides a ton of insight into engines and engine break-in here.

Always a pleasure to fly with you and look forward to more of your adventures Martin! Oh BTW grab me an apple turnover 😋
What a beautiful Bonanza. Can this upgrade be done with a V tail Bonanza? Seems to me it would add allot to a V tail also. Especially it's short field performance.
Yes, there are STCs available to upgrade a V-tail Bonanza with the IO-550B. It results in phenomenal performance.

Sounds like that is the oil most people are using these days, Ed. Thanks for the note.

Was the IO-550B heavier than the outgoing IO-520? And did you not consider an M-T scimitar prop when you chose the Hartzell scimitar prop?
There was almost no weight difference between the two.
I looked at the MT propeller, but it was so much more expensive... went with the Hartzell Scimitar instead.

- Martin
Martin you mentioned you’re a software engineer. Also, congratulation on your awesome new engine and bird.
Thank you, Ben.

Hi Devin. No issues at all from what I can see after 75 hours on the new engine.
