I'm so confused why all comments are not about the Bruzelles typo.
A few small errors. The borders of the provinces changed in 1962 when the language border was made. For example the exclaves of Voeren and Komen. Didn't exist before 1962. Here is a Dutch wikipedia article about the changes in the provincial borders: nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taalgrens_in_Belgi%C3%AB

great video! However, the province borders were not static, they moved through the years. For example, in 1962, the language border was established between the provinces and the city of Moeskroen (Mouscron) was transferred from West-Flanders to Hainaut.
Likewise in 1963 Everbeek (Everbecq) was transferred from Hainaut to East Flanders.

Both regions had yellow flags, but Flanders had a black symbol and Walloon had a red one.

I mean Belgium also wanted to get Texas as a colony after the Independance of Texas (And they still wanted it after the annexation by the US) .
But you'd be surprised at how many time Belgium wanted to have a colony in America in the XIX Century ,like ,they wanted to get some Brazilian land to start a colony ,they wanted the entirety of Central America (The thing they didn't want was Nicaragua),they tried to put a lot of Belgian in Mexico (as immigrant) to start a colony but it failed ,many died due to diseases and other returned to Belgium .
And even crazier ,is that Leopold II ,wanted to have freakin' Portugal ,Illinois and some other Landlocked US State as colony .
And many more ,like that one time in New Guinea
It wasn't really under their control and nobody ever recognized it. To Guatemala, they were just renting out land

honestly, throughout history the region as a whole (as in, the geographic region of belgium) was kind of always shafted whenever 2 european countries went to war, it'd always spill into our lands, no matter if we were involved or not.

Small detail: in 1962 when the language borders were defined a lot of municipalities (like Voeren/Fourons and Moeskroen/Mouscron, ...) changed hands between the provinces.

they never made the colony. it was given to them in the berlin conference as a compromise between the colonial powers
Its easy when the people you are conquering are a few centuries behind you in terms of technology

He started work on acquiring it in 1876 already, by the time of the Berlin Conference he was already theoretically in control because Stanley had made all the local chiefs sign treaties with him. France had already recognised his claim before the conference had started, and the USA had already recognised his "Congo Free State" entirely.
The only thing the great powers did was argue amongst themselves until they realized keeping the Congo from the others was the best for everyone. (except the Congolese)
@@asuka7309 the conference was the thing to give validation for Leopard's claims, without which he would not have been able to aquire so much land. Before the conference his "colonies" were mainly expeditions and claims

On contrary to what many believe, Belgium its history did not start in 1830. Belgium was just a "new name" given to what marked the first real independence of the Southern Netherlands, as the Roman Empire used to mark this region as Belgicae. For centuries the Southern Netherlands tried to get rid of the constant overlordship of the Spanish, Austrians and French. None of them were even to the slightest extent interested or willingly to grant or support our independence. Eventually we were handed over to the Netherlands, as the Great Powers of Europe loved to treat us back then.

You've got the province borders wrong, they were not static but had slight adjustments when the flemish-walloon border was created, and Zwijndrecht went from East Flanders to Antwerp even before that

If you split up Belgium into Waloon, Flanders and Brussels...didnt you foget the german area at the broder with Germany. As far as I know they have the same rights as the other regions and also their own Parlament like the others. So by Region/Gouvernmentarea Belgium is technically split in 4 parts, not 3.
The german area is included in the walloon region that's why there is only 3 colors represented. But if you talk about communities then you say the : french community, dutch community and finally the german community. Each having their own parliament

They should’ve federalised somewhat according to the Swiss model.
Well, they were 9 provinces with some kind of a government and a parliament in each one of them. Those would have been a great base for the federalism. But obvious efficient solutions aren't part of the belgian culture

I have to inform you this map is wrong, Comines-Warneton, Voeren and some other minor regions were actually part of other provinces before 1963, as the province borders shifted to follow linguistical lines.
Another slight error: The French name for the Capital and South are Bruxelles and Wallonie repectively, not Bruzelles and Wallonne

A nation can be defined as “a large body of people united by common descent, history, culture, or language, inhabiting a particular country or territory.” The Belgians are not United by common descent(Walloons v. Flemings constantly threatening to rip the country in half) the same goes for history, culture and language.
Therefor Belgium is a country, as it is an officially recognized political entity; but it is not a nation as it does not meet the criteria to be defined as a nation state.
Edit: it shouldn’t be a country either, its territory should be and should have always been French, Dutch, and slightly German

You have 3 "regions" each with their own governments who have a lot of control over local stuff. But there's still the national government who has broader powers and controls the foreign policy.
