Daniil Trifonov - Bach: Contrapunctus 14, BWV 1080, 19 (Compl. by Trifonov)

  • @daniiltrifonov is intrigued by Bach’s attempts to base the work on the Fibonacci sequence and the golden ratio, but observes that the result is “far more than a scientific experiment: as always with Bach, he managed to make music of indescribable beauty and emotion”. Trifonov’s imaginative interpretation captures the sense of the work as a cycle, treating it as a living, organic whole. This chimes with the inspiration he takes from spending time in nature, whether hiking or practising Qigong, a form of meditation that values the healing energy of trees. “And the tree is a good metaphor for The Art of Fugue’s overall structure,” he notes. “The theme is the trunk, the fugues are the branches, all the permutations within each fugue are the leaves…”
    Bach did not live to finish The Art of Fugue’s final contrapunctus, and a number of musicians have attempted conjectural completions. For this recording, Trifonov, himself an accomplished composer, has created a seamless, stylistically respectful conclusion worthy of Bach’s genius. It reflects the extent to which he has absorbed and internalised every nook and cranny of Bach’s valedictory masterpiece.
    Daniil Trifonov - Bach: Contrapunctus 14, BWV 1080, 19 (Compl. by Trifonov)

I do not care about marketing. Of course, this clip is not essential , but you are not oblige to watch it. • @lethalgiada
      @lethalgiada 2 года назад +6

      I'm perfectly agree.
      Very often the contrapuntal technique is pulsating life, in Bach. I see a very strong metaphor in it, which perhaps is the one captured by this pianist. Each person comes into the world necessarily conditioned by the inheritance of the past of the person who brought him into the world and the context in which he finds himself. There are patterns that are at the same time the conditions of our existence and what binds us into a feeling of anguish. The variation, the counterpoint are metaphors of the soul that with difficulty, through its bonds, tries to build a self beyond itself to reach authenticity.
      A man like Bach, a son of his time, interprets in the search for God this realization of a soul that is necessarily born separated from its creator and that struggles against his limits (sin, for example) to rejoin him. In today's vision of this pianist, perhaps there is no longer a God who ensures a safe haven for the authenticity of human existence, but the sensation that each of us experiences at least once, in feeling evanescent, inauthentic if he does not test himself to go beyond what is taken for granted, beyond the "given song" remains. And I think this author's reinterpretation of Bach's work is enchanting.

    This piece is new to me AND it is J.S. Bach. Since I first heard a performance of his “Jesu, joy of man’s desiring” when about twelve years old I was immediately transported into a realm of celestial, gracious beauty the likes I had never experienced. It is an indelible, precious memory that has since grown into an inspirational spark of lyricism when some years ago I composed a verse to that great chorale and sang it at a wedding anniversary celebration. I am moved by every piece I have heard by this great musical genius. PWG

    This video is excellent, and the ending, which was composed by Trifonov himself is very well executed. I'm a profesional pianist myself and one thing that always rubs me the wrong way, is the rigidity of the classical music culture. The video is a very creative and personal way of expressing Bach's music, and I like that it has a certain gloom to it that is uncommon when referring to Bach's music, but tells us that not everybody feel's music the same way. Many classical music enthusiasts will get offended when they see their precious Bach being "profanated" by a video like this, which only serves to gatekeep new and original attempts at expressing old music in a new way which is very much needed in this day and age for this new generation.

    I was moved at the practice struggle with the entire Art of the Fugue, the work that Bach, blind and mind humming, is said to have dictated to his son. The wonderful TRIFONOV with his beautiful Fazioli Pianoforte 20th century instrument in a room next to the fire in the hearth, the wall filled with the score to the fugues like a detective examining the record of the event that led to Bach’s final gift to us all. The performer struggles to get into Bach’s mind and find the “Affect” for every note. It leads him to dreams and not to a machine, like the modern Pianoforte but into the organic world of all life and yes to the tree as well, but most of all the resolution to the question Bach posed for us all.
    Bravo to the artists involved in bringing this heritage of western civilization into the present when it was not so long ago mankind’s political ego and warlike nature bombing the libraries, architecture and paintings that was the legacy of the past to the world. I’m thankful for the shards that are left as we still contemplate war for fun and personal profit. Ray Evans Harrell,

    Я понимаю и тех, кто пишет, что музыка Баха намного глубже, чем какое-бы то ни было изображение её в видеоряде.
    Но, с другой стороны, мне понравилось, как с момента, где началась часть, сочиненная Даниилом, звук как-бы "провалился в сон", и ещё что когда он дописывал ноты в лесу, он рисовал только паузы и дорисовывал палочки, обозначающие длительности к листикам, которые уже были на бумаге, как-бы метафора того, что музыка уже растворена в природе и "берётся, добывается" из неё.
    В общем, если рассматривать эту работу не как попытку передать музыку средствами кино, а наоборот, как мини-фильм (клип), в котором звучит музыка Баха (звучит же музыка в фильмах, раскрывая нам смысл происходящего на экране глубже), то это интересно.

Who else in the past 300 years ever even Attempted to write an ending for this piece by Bach, let alone Complete one, Record it and make a Video of it for our benefit? Wasn't it likely intended to be the only 4-part fugue in the set? The piece would have concluded with the 3 subjects of XIV finally combined with the main subject of the Kunst der Fuge. I don't know if Trifonov's ending achieves this, you'd have to listen extremely carefully with the sheets in front of you. But I definitely heard the main subject being introduced at some point. In any case, being able to convincingly complete this composition is a stellar feat in and of itself! Have a good day!

    8:41 is Trifonov's part. The playing is very good I, really think, but I disagree that it's "a seamless, stylistically respectful conclusion worthy of Bach’s genius", it's simply a small addition to just conclude the work, with "not stylistically respectful" octaves on the left hand, for example. If it were to really develop what Bach has set out with his materials, I would imagine that he would still go a long way, a long path of combinatory development, since Bach never shies away from profound and exaustive "florescence" of all the seeds he plants in a way that still amazes us. I appreciate the tree metaphor, but promotional talk should not get too excited, sometimes. Pianists like Trifonov are great players/musicians, but the distance to musicians of the past that could not only play, but compose and improvise is huge. This to show that some current adulation sould be put in context and moderated.

    • @pedterson
      @pedterson 2 года назад +23

      I agree that it isn't a seamless or stylistically consistent conclusion. I don't even think that was Trifonov's intention here. You hear an immediate stylistic and athmospheric shift when his part begins, as if he wanted to make explicit that everything thereafter is but an echo of Bach's piece in the same way that much of music history is an echo of Bach's genius. Personally, I find that more respectful than attempting to imitate Bach.

    I have the utmost respect for Trifonov in opting to dedicate so much time and effort to The Art of Fugue. His interpretations often stand with Sokolov's, Gould's, and Zhu xiao Mei's. I particularly love how he sheds new light on the contrapuncti 8 and 11 with his carefully placed rubati and demonic drive.
    However, I find the existence of this video utterly flabergasting: if someone didn't already appreciate (or wasn't already capable of appreciating) THE ART OF FUGUE, would this jumpy dream sequence in which the director chose to cut every 2 seconds help them in doing so?
    Conversely, if someone already did appreciate the music, does this add anything at all to the experience? Why is the accompanying video to one of the most profound pieces ever written as _about_ the process of the performer's learning it as possible? Can you for a moment see Richter, Gould, Zhu Xiao Mei, Sokolov etc or many other great artists agreeing to such a video and putting _themselves_ center stage in one of their performances? Would not a simple video of the performance have sufficed?
    Like I say, I have the utmost respect for Trifonov but simply cannot understand what this video is supposed to add, or why it exists.
