Happy ET Day. 40 years ago, this cinematic masterpiece was released in theaters, worldwide.
It's a must own and it looks fantastic on 4K. It was like watching it for the first time. It's in my top 10 to own.
I noticed that ET blinks, watching it in 4K for the first time
One of my favorite moments in this movie is when E.T. is walking around the forest by himself at the beginning looking up at the gigantic trees and the music swells. It really struck me. It’s a very short and fleeting moment but I’ve always loved it.
Redwood trees. I've been to that forest. It's more amazing in person.
If it’s shot on film, it needs film grain. Glad it wasn’t touched on this release.
Yeah purist refers to preferring film grain intact, not digitally touched up.
I actually want to SEE the detail in my film.
Here’s the thing though, many times the grain is more prominent in 4K and blu ray than it actually was even in the cinemas. Why should we be seeing more grain than intended? It’s funny, “purists” have no problem with blu ray ruining a movie by making traditional special effects look more fake or making things more obvious than originally. Like the way the wires are more obvious in War of the Worlds. Or a Ray Harryhausen stop motion look more fake. Why is that I wonder? Fact is most filmmakers, especially sfx artists in the old days used the low quality of the screen to their advantage and we’re ruining that yet being hypocritical about it.
@@dusk1234567890 it's a case by case basis, it just depends on the transfer and how it was filmed.
dusk1234567890 That’s where I differ from some purists. That’s why I also believe some films shouldn’t come out on 4K UHD because they would need a lot of “help”’so the effects wouldn’t look fake. When The Wizard Of Oz came out on 4K, people on hometheaterforum.com were asking for Gone With The Wind next, and it was Film Restorer Robert Harris who said it would not be a good candidate because the extra resolution would make the matte paintings etc look fake and it would need “help”. Now, like the wires, if it was never meant to he seen and the original film stock would cover those flaws, and if HDR would make the flaws visible, I say correct the flaws because it was never meant to be seen.
I still remember the VHS tape we had as a kid. It had a green cover on the back of the tape. I have yet to upgrade from the tape so I finally got this coming in the mail in 4K. I’m trying to get all my favorite movies in 4K before they kill it off for digital only. 4K blu ray is probably the best physical format we will ever get. I doubt there will ever be another physical format after this

I wish Spielberg would record commentary tracks for his films. It would be great listening to his two cents as the film plays. It's a shame he doesn't do that.
I just got this. I have never owned a copy of E.T. before, and I picked this up for around 15 bucks. I am so happy that it's the theatrical release.

I picked this up a few years back during a black friday sale, that's when I get my 4K's.
Just subscribed. Love your channel. Just got my 1st 4K player recently and your video on how to look at the specs of how the film was shot and how to check the digital master level on IMDB completely changed the way I shop for 4K discs. Keep up the good work.

I didn't even mind the 2003 SE. I liked the added animation and they fixed some continuity issues. Could've done without the replacement of shotguns/radios though.
Not to nitpick but the re-release was in 2002 for the 20th anniversary. I do agree doing without the walkie talkies replacing the shotguns. It was the post 9/11 era and the decision was made by Spielberg which he then later regretted in an interview and apologized.
Do you know if the 40th anniversary is a new transfer, or worth getting over a previous 4K release?

I think cgi stands out a lot more than practical fx do on most 4ks

I'm looking at more older titles to add to my 4k collection, as I don't have a lot of 4k disks yet since I still buy blu-rays for stuff like my anime which is still mainly on blu-ray but when an older movie has some kind of 4k/8k transfer it captures my eye..... so glad to know this is defiantly worth it on 4k since E.T. is one of my favorite movies.
Got this a year back when BB had it for 14.99 for a week. Worth the upgrade from Blu Ray. The sound is much better on this 4K release as well. Noticeable from the 1080. I own 3 versions of this and the 4K is by far the best.

the DVD is a nice DVD that I have and the reason I didn't upgrade to Blu-ray without her the Blu-ray was some special edition that sucked. Now that I know this isn't the special edition it's tempting
@@MentalDeviant Actually the Blu-ray is the original edition. The 2005 DVD is the one which only contains the CG special edition.
Picked this edition up on 4k disc awhile back, have not watched it yet. Think that I will have to pop it in tonight.

It looks like there is some WITHIN A SHOT color grading going on here in the night scenes. On film, in the opening pan down from the stars, I seem to remember the stars being fine pin-points barely visible. Here they've been brightened up a lot. Likewise, when Elliott walks from the house out to the shed where E.T. is, there's quite a light-to-dark exposure change. It's ok--the resolution and color quality is superb.
I have not seen ET since the theaters in 82... totally forgotten about it 4k remastered

I just bought the 4K disc of E,T, and was rather disappointed by the picture image. I don't understand why some 4K discs
are *eye popping* in their 4K-ness and others are no where near.
Does it come with the Michael Jackson storybook that won a Grammy for best children's story audio book?
As a bonus I wished they would release the much reviled DVD special edition of the film in these new sets.
@@wesrm1 I mean... Come on, although it's not the original release of the film and replaces loads of practical effects with CG (which I don't support that) but it still looked pretty damn good, made E.T. Look the most alive that he ever has.

Awesome Vid!! I was having trouble deciding to buy the Blu Ray for cheap or the 4K that wasn’t that bad for its price. As for the Movie ET is a Classic I notice it doesn’t get as much love as it use to but I still think it’s a Phenomenal film and some of the most well acted and realistic Kid acting.

Thought this was a fantastic release.
I bought the basic version but the visuals looked amazing. I watched "Ghostbusters" that was released around the same time as "E.T." and it looked nowhere as good. I would say this movie is comparable to "The Shining" in camera quality buy it falls short because of the grain. But it still looks damn good. I'm impressed and glad I bought it even though it's a kids movie.

How can you tell if a 4 k is a good one one by readying the box! I’m getting some of the that look right down bad. Tired of wasting my money on bad.

film grain is fine. older movies are, after all, shot on film. and I prefer my old movies look old. I don't understand why some people have problems with that.

I just watched first 30 min of saving private ryan 4k disc and about 25 min into movie,the fire burning looks abnormal as the fire seems like light is stretched ..hard to explain but I see others in a forum mentioned it.also white blooming across characters ..is this normal ..seems weird and others seeing same.also saw in digital version.
Rich w it’s been like that since the DVD. That’s how Spielberg wanted it to look.

Spielberg had cinematographer Janusz Kaminski remove the coating on the lenses for some shots, to give it that aged WWII combat camera lens smear.
Although I haven’t watched the blu-ray version, I have to say I wasn’t impressed with this one. On my LG oled it looked surprisingly dark, perhaps an issue with HDR10 as opposed to dolby vision? I’ve seen far better 4k transfers of old movies
I’ve definitely seen better. Like I said The Shining and Blade Runner definitely outshine (no pun intended) this one. But compared to the previous Blu-ray I think it’s worth upgrading.
Groundhog Day is also an excellent transfer of an old classic

It's not your movie but alot of people love it it's a classic.
It's an American classic that many grew up loving. The music is what makes it for me, one of John Williams' best scores.
I love the story and family. I also appreciate the technical aspect of it, things like lighting and colour.
It's a monumental movie, that's saying if humans can be friends with an extra-terrestrial, we sure as hell can get along with each other.
Is this another release or is it the one that came out over a year ago?

Purists are people who prefer to see a film in its best quality without hindering the original source, and how it was originally intended. The same goes for its audio, purists would prefer to hear it in its original theatrical audio release stereo, or mono for example. Cleaned up of course but not upgraded to an enhanced 5.1, 7.1 reproduction. 😉

I don’t mind the special edition with the CGI changes. I thought they added to the fun of a older movie I’ve seen so many times. That set looks nice, but I’ll stick with my steelbook and previous blu ray for now.
One of the most overated films ever. Its ok and thats all. Certainly didnt deserve to be the most successful film ever, for a few years.
