- Marcelo Rios vs Hicham Arazi 1997 Roland Garros 4th round Highlights. RE-POSTING with update from previous version. Play was suspended at 2-2 in the 4th set and I didn't have the rest but I found the end of the match with the full 4th set tiebreaker which I've included in it's entirety

Arazi was and still is my favorite tennis player of all time.
He was an artist. Played with great style. I was a fan (why I'm here). In the 80s I was a big Johan Kriek fan.
The good days... I was a Rios fan, however, I remember respecting Arazi and how he played.

I was in grade 7 during this match. I remember I faked a sickness to leave school earlier and go back home watch the match.

Ce match était un pur talent naturel, tant d’un côté que de l’autre du terrain. Ils avaient tous les deux cette main et ce poignet qui caractérisaient les artistes, les génies de la raquette. Aujourd’hui, il ne reste même plus aucune trace de ce type de joueur.

Two excellent shot makers, Rios my favourite player of the late 90's early 2000, Arazi I was always hoping to cause an upset. Rios IMO just as talented as a Federer but simply did not put the hard work to be a consistent player.
Rios was on par with Federer in terms of speed and feel, but not power. Not even close.
@@rjamesyork Ríos solo media 1.73 tenía que hacer mucho esfuerzo para poder enfrentar a máquinas de 1.85, 1.90 y con mucha más fuerza. Por ejemplo Sampras, Kafelnikov o Kuerten sacaban sobre 190 kms/h y Ríos entre 168 y 182 y eso se veía en otros tiros como las derechas.
Hicham a beauty to watch thru and thru thus far for me sitting in the front row in Stuttgart some decades ago whispering to our little star player from Karlsruhe (damn I recall driving him home with 8 Hefeweizen (Bavarian beer, 0.5l) inside me, him sleeping like a baby. that´s not Hichams fault though)...ok still whispering "damn look at this kid, I would swop him for all my future girls or never need another anymore, sth verrry strange and brave back then when gayeté was restricted to Berlin...such natural swings, my idol Mac looking like a hacker with some coordinative struggles. What was missing? - He played a notch too tamely, hardly knowing how hot his shotmaking from every imagineable position was. A Rog sans brain, imho. and a motherfucking asshole, in person, just to counterbalance his angelic appearance. God damn I´m still not over...him ;)

Excelente Arazi , tuvo un buen dia por que en toda su carrera, con suerte llego solo al numero 22 del ranking. Un par de partidos bueno no hace a un crack.

Y así hay quienes que dicen que Ríos le daría un paseo a Nadal... si no le pudo ganar a Arazi ... quien puede dudar que Ríos nunca estará al nivel del big 3 ?.... Ríos fue grande pero está muy lejos de ser el mejor de todos los tiempos... es más es muy poco probable que fuera número uno con un Federer, Nadal y Djokovic... incluso con un Murray, Wawrinka o incluso ... y ojo incluso un González... que para mí alcanzó un nivel incluso mayor a nuestro querido Chino ... de hecho el Feña pudo derrotar en cancha a varios números uno en ejercicio... ojo que le ganó al propio Federer en el máster... Ríos grande ... pero justo donde tiene que estar detrás de una treintena de tenistas si lo más que tenían lo que Ríos nunca tuvo.. cabeza ... parte muy importante de este lindo deporte... el más lindo en mi opinión... pucha Chino ... si hubieses ganado uno ... tan solo un Grand Slam... para taparme la boca por último... e inscribir tu nombre como único Chileno en ganar un Grande... un Roland Garros por ejemplo... pero eso es y será muy difícil para nuestro Chilito..

That 4th set breaker was a stinker for Rios. Him and Kohlschreiber have a lot in common. Supremely talented but typically anti-clutch performances. Shame. Arazi very underrated player.
