Without modern industrialism, we would still be living like my parents did when they were kids: a couple shirts a year that became hand-me-downs out of necessity. We shouldn't judge the state of the world by relative standards in wealthy nations, but by comparing nations to their own past.
India was one of the richest countries in the world at one point and a major trade hub. It was only impoverished during the wave of colonisation that stole from countries across the world to build the western world.
