      Id say the exact opposite.
That CONVERSELY though he was capable of doing spooky, slow, stripped down shit like this as far back as PHM, he WAS then hiding (still) behind a wall of atmosphere, ambience, noise, melody, chords , instruments, and yes of course, big man with a gun, fist fucking tuff guy lyrics back then too
He's now secure and able to release the essence of his melody without having to hide behind his production (which he does so g'damn dazzlingly well)
But yeah. what the others said lol wut & GROW UP

Crazy how so true that is. You find a thing, from somebody else and wave it off... and then once they move to something else, you embrace and form your soul by it. What a way to form a shell without somebody striking at it only to realize it was how you felt comfort finding yourself on your own. Its influence and curiousity and wisdom. Not inoctrination cirriculum.

One of the major reasons Trent's vocals are *so* good, is because he's not a normal frontman. Most singers in rock music expect to be at the forefront of the music. All or most of the time, their vocals parts are similar to when a guitarist plays a solo. It's supposed to be the most important part of the music you're hearing.
Trent's been producing all of the music he's making for decades. He's creating the drum tracks in whatever tool he's using, playing the guitars and keyboards and saxophones and piano and synths [...], he's writing the songs. (He's had many very able people in the studio helping him do this, from Flood to Charlie Clouser to Atticus Ross, but the point is he's intimately involved in all parts of his music).
He's so used to doing unique things with his voice - whispering or quasi-chanting or croaking or creaking or screaming, being breathy or solid in his delivery, having raw vocals or being behind countless layers of production or distortion.
As a result his vocals *complement* the music so well because it's essentially one of his many instruments and means of making an emotional impact. He's never, ever going "look at me! I am such an amazing singer! Listen to this riff and run! I truly am the star of this band!". Instead he's saying, "listen to this song, all of it, the vocals and everything else, and let yourself feel". I mean he's so wiling to de-centre vocals when needed that he has several albums of literally nothing but instrumentals.
That's why nobody else - even when they tried getting other vocalists to record this (this was just supposed to be a rough take!) - could match Trent. He will not over-sing something or try to persuade you he's an amazing singer (he personally doesn't have a high opinion of his own singing!). He just, over decades of practice and experience, knows how to make his voice match a feeling. And that's one of the most powerful things any vocalist can do.

I have lived a lifetime of self destruction of the highest quality, as terrible as the aftermath always felt, It truly was my only option to feel real emotions. I am still on this planet because of a man who always seemed to be dealing with the issues that were constantly jumping out to try and derail my life. But not only did it feel like he was giving me his hand to pull me out before I was too deep, but he was not only showing me that he made it out again, he was that plus being like here is a song I wrote about how I made it out again, hope it inspires you to to never give up, always climb out. It showed me that I was hiding from the darkness of life in a mindset that was much more darker. And since the self destruction button is stuck in a locked position. I have gotten better at coming back from it every time. That might not make sense to anyone, and I feel ok with that, because I can feel things again, and I can do it without having to put my live on the line or hurt the few who care about me. It might sound sad, but it puts a smile on my face that I have that option. Sad would be If I didn't. Trent I really hope your aware of how many lives you have changed for the better, by showing us/ maybe just me, the way back, and giving a soundtrack to life that genuine, and always leading by example. I was a junkies for 15 years, till I actually had a hero to guide me, now I'm a drug counselor. So I can do what you did for me, but sadly without making beautiful music.

Trent channeling his inner Elvis Costello. Lovely song from a wonderful movie. I love how the video doesn't really give too much away.

What an astonishing use of silence, only someone capable to use noise for the industrial metal music could do that, you blow my mind again, thank you.

Reznor and Ross are the main reason why I watched this movie and they're outstanding as always.. Anytime I read they're going to do the soundtrack I know I can't lose that movie because it's going to be beautiful! Looking forward for the next David Fincher movie! Fincher + NIN = Masterpiece!

To hear you sing this way.....made me cry......instantly. You haven't lost a single iota of talent. You still move me. Wow. What a diff song. Props to Atticus, too. But your voice, Trent, singing like that just broke my soul in the best way. Again. I love you infinity infinities. ❤️🫂🥲

Amazing track. I love how this doesn't sound like a NIN song. Keep up the great work Trent and Atticus.

Wow Trent!! Blown away. I was a child when I heard your music in the 90s and bought all your CDs (halos). Huge influence on me and my music even though my music doesn't sound like yours. I'm playing a 30 song set of mostly my own music tomorrow. It's my birthday today and everything's going my way. And so it makes sense it's Friday the 13th and this is released. Thanks for the feels
