  • This is my new audio tribute for the original version of "it's a small world" at the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. Happy birthday to the World's Fair and the original "it's a small world"! They are turning 60 years old today. Technically this version only ran in April 1964-Oct 1965, because it was shipped to Disneyland in 1966 where it still runs today. This is my personal favorite ride anywhere. I am so glad it has lasted 60 years. I hope it continues to last until the Sun swallows the Earth, (Billions of years from now). It is one of if not the most timeless Disney attraction ever, and has aged like fine wine. The message of Peace on Earth through understanding other cultures has always been extremely relevant, and this ride brilliantly displays it by showing the similarities of children around the world, as they sing it's a small world in their unique ways. The Finale reinforces it with all the world's children together. The wonderful art direction of Mary Blair makes this ride unlike any other, and the hundreds of audio animatronics, a quantity that puts any attraction built in the last 30 years to shame. Rolly Crump designed the legendary Tower of the Four Winds. This kinetic structure gave something interesting and whimsical to look at when waiting to board "it's a small world". This is because, unlike Disneyland, there was no pretty façade. The building was very basic looking in comparison, with the only things distinguishing it being Tower of the Four Winds, a large "it's a small world" sign, and sometimes Disney characters walking around out front (Not inside). Because New York is more rainy than California, there was a platform covering the boats when they were outdoors. This probably inspired the one at Disneyland Paris. Inside, the ride featured every scene from the Disneyland version except Welcome room, North Pole, Canada, South Pacific, United States, and Goodbye. However, many parts were arranged differently. Although many 1964 props thankfully remain at Disneyland today, some never made it there. For example, Tower Bridge was rebuilt so we now go under it instead of past it. Magic Kingdom and Tokyo Disneyland have a different one that you still go past, not under. The Rainforest scene was in South America instead of South Pacific, between The Andes Mountains and Brazil, also very appropriate. Magic Kingdom and Tokyo also still have a Rainforest in South America, though it's right before you enter the South Pacific. The many continental parts of the world im the ride have an audio mix, reused from my audio loops. The vocals include the main English chorus (3 verses) in the entrance, Swedish, British English, Italian, and Swiss Yodeler (3 verses each) in Europe, Japanese (3 verses) in Asia, Laughing Nigerians and hyena (3 verses) in Africa, Spanish (3 verses) in Latin America, and the original Finale chorus (3 verses) in the Finale, followed by the same vocals in the exit. They are all accompanied by MANY unique instruments from around the world, and their great renditions of the theme song, it's a small world. These are the classic compositions by Bobby Hammack (1964) that were used at the 1964-65 World's Fair and all other versions except Disneyland Paris. The many pictures show as much of this version as I could. At some point in the next few months, I may also have an updated and improved version of my 1966 audio tribute. I hope you enjoy this!
I do not own any of the audio or images used in this video. All audio & some images are owned by Disney. The other images are owned by various sources including Daveland, Gorillas Don’t Blog, and Bill Cotter.

Professor Owl: Music makes the world go round. The globe’s a bouncing ball. When voices join in harmony, it’s a small world after all. ( cue @21:22)
