- George Michael's brilliant show @ Sportpaleis Antwerp on 23 June 2007. Part of the 2nd European leg of the 25Live tour.
This was my second Antwerp gig. In November 2006 we also enjoyed a concert of King George, then assuming it would be our very, very last one. But things change (& quite good!!)

This is beautiful. I can hear the influence from This Mortal Coil in his style on this. Then from that to the more contemporary style we know him for, this must have been a fantastic concert!
This song is Beautifil, George opened the show with it in Dublin August 2nd 2007, was absolutely world class. was an honour to be there. This man has the voice of an Angel, you have a new Irish fan.
I saw him sing this live in Manchester for once i was completely silent. Goose bumps all over : ))

'Kin 'ell George - pretty damn good! Weird to think that when TMC covered this in '83, George was down Club Tro;icana deing a Bad Boy. Maturity makes the man, and hands up, hats off - he does this all time classic proud. Even Tim might've approved...

@skrason This one surprised me in a positive way!!! The version of This Mortal Coil is entangled with my life, but it is not the original... Tim Buckley wrote this one! But what you said: Hats off to Mr. Michael!!!
Thank GOD he did the Mortail Coil version and not the original. The original is really dull and plodding - amazing how people can turn it into something so beautiful,
wow, looks like a great show, he just gets better with time. Never thought he'd do a song like the old This Mortal Coil classic, but that just shows the quality of the man, nice one.
yes,the song is superb.but NOBODY does sing this song like George!you have to admit!his voice is the most beautiful i`ve ever heard!so,you should comment everywhere else but here!

Yes, big surprise for me too! This Mortal Coil's version is unsurpassed and still is - but George did a good job here.

@skrason the original was Tim Buckley, although This Mortal Coil's version was the 1st I'd heard.

Was so pleased that he changed some of the shows from the 2006 tour (just to make it different for those that had seen the previous tour)and this song I hadn't heard before but it now gives me goosebumps to hear George sing it! Thanks for posting!
and by the way,i happen to have the tim buckley original.just because i think George`s voice is HEAVENLY,doesn`t mean i hate the others.i also like depeche mode,jeff buckley,,coldplay,u2,keane,good stuff,you know?

Some of us prefer the alleteration and dragging of the "newborn child" as to "oyster". "Oyster" is an awkward lyric and Buckley was embarrased by it. It's kind of a marker. If someone sings "newborn child" that means they learned the song from an ealier cover and were unaware of Tim's performance on "The Monkees". All in all Michael's rendintion is powerful and moving.

@Panos1963 ok, my apologies too for being rude. I think GM is a good singer, but I'm not into his type of music. Though I like "Careless whisper" a lot O_O Maybe Buckley isn't as academically trained as GM, but he's naturally very very talented and has a very wide vocal range (listen to Starsailor, Sweet Surrender or Troubadour). But above all, I like the music in general he made... That's it. Peace

BTW, in my first post I didn't mention ANYTHING about GM or his abilities to sing, I just said that the song is originally by Buckley :D
well I really do think that the elizabeth razer version is more beautyful than Buckleys version! For that I do not agree with you. Interpretaion is what Art can be all about!

Bah he's a very average singer in my opinion. But then each to their own. Tell ya what though. Listen to Antony from Antony and the Johnsons here on youtube and then tell me who you think is better
Wonderful, but then George Michael is one of my favorite singers. Do look for Brendan Perry's cover. It's my favorite.

@stiffler341 I just can't work out what else it could be. I mean, George Michael's version is hardly radically different is it? Like I say, it is obvious he has heard TMC's recording and liked it so much, he has paid them the ultimate compliment and basically copied it. Therefore I fail to see how he can have destroyed it. You should try to be less biased and more open minded in your thinking.
Buckley is considered by many to be a brilliant vocalist and lyracist, many peoples top ten.
The fact you belittle him is perhaps because he is very unusal and avent garde, you clearly like safer more mainstream voices and thats all right, but I don't see why yo hate Buckley so intensly?
I mean to take glee in something like someones heorin adiction and untimely death to be shamefull and disgusting. Many people have and their families had to deal with drug adiction and you inslut them.
Usually, George Michael's material serves his voice quite poorly. He certainly does justice to this beautiful song. Still, Liz Fraser's version is infinitely more moving. There's just something otherworldly about her delivery of the song that transports the listener, here George just sings very, very well. Does anyone know if Jeff Buckley ever covered this song?
George Michael is clearly a gifted singer. But he chooose to cover, almost to the note, Robert Plant's cover of This Mortal Coil's cover of Tim Buckley's song. The giveaway is the lyric "I'm as puzzled as a newborn child" instead of "I'm as puzzled as the oyster". Still, Tim's fans should be pleased with a beautiful rendition of one of their favorite songs.
I enjoy all KIND of music (gothic, alternative, electro, classical, folk,...) and I THINK George is a REAL talent... and I'm NOT a Pop music lover ! People are SO snob here on You Tube... I don't want to compare a banana with an apple !
can you imagine if JB had ever covered it?? where i come from, it would be on the same level as hallelujah--hypnotic, absolutely mesmerizing. i'll bet he sang all his dad's stuff at home, though--just to try it on.
Check out the versions by Tim Buckley (who wrote and recorded the original),Robert Plant,Bostik Swastika and This Mortal Coil.Also other versions on one or two Buckley tribute compilations.
Tim Buckley had a 3 and a half octave range, a better musical and songwriter sensitity and is leagues above George Michael, not to dis Michals but Buckley was one of a kind.

Not true! I bought Tim's albums on the back of This Mortal Coil's version. Can't get into it at all.
