    So helpful. Thanks again. Akai need to send you a free MPC X. They don't realise that this honest style of analysis which includes the limitations of the product, attracts more people to the product than straight PR "this is perfect" praise. The limitations of musical equipment define their character. Keep it up bro.

    Thanks for doing this! Bought the MPC Live as soon as it was available at my local dealer this summer. Being my first MPC and all I was a bit bummed when they didn't include any printet manual. Seeing your videos makes it much simpler to understand and figure out how things work than having to read the manual anyway. This guide is perfect for me as I currently have a habit of adding new tracks to sequence 1 until there's too much meat on the bone. This video is giving me the right input on how to process my project into something else than just 2-4 bar loops! Cheers!

    ...such a good tutorial! I've owned my MPC Live for eight days now after having had Maschine for the last year, and I was dreading having to go back to square one again, but your videos have got me straight back up to speed. So many tutorials only use a 2 bar explanation of something and then go no further. Or it goes to the other extreme and goes on too long. You've found a very good balance.... 4.9 stars...! Hey man, thanks for the great video. I may contact you about some Skype classes. I just had one question. I only intend to do recording and composing of songs. Would you choose to use the MPC X to compose and record or use a DAW like Ableton, along with EZDrummer? EZDrummer is really easy to use for putting drums to songs. And I guess the MPC studio 2.0 software can integrate with Ableton. I would appreciate your thoughts. $2000 is a lot to spend.

    hi ,, i plan to use mpc live for live performance ,iv finished one song and ready start a new one ,my problem is whether to start from scratch a new program or still use the same program but just add new samples and new sequences ,as it would save me time in between song not needing to load a new song ,thanks

    Awesome video...question, though: is there no 'global' track that would cross all seqence boundaries in the 'song' view that you could, say, drop audio files into? That is, I'd like to have my sequences built up into a song, and then, from song view, be able to drop audio clips below the sequences in the song timeline (hopefully this makes sense :) )

      A Grade 2000 You can use VSTs but only in controller mode. You can also use any samples that you may have, for example you could use the Battery sample library - just locate the library folder and transfer/copy the samples to your mpc SD card etc

    How would you go about setting up multiple songs to be able to play a live set?

  • @furnacecreek1035
    @furnacecreek1035 6 лет назад +8

    Very useful workflow/housekeeping conventions. I work in the same construct/deconstruction fashion. Trouble with song mode is, while playing in song mode one can't use the pads. Not sure why Akai designed this way - a veritable "lockdown" of the box. Think live scenario vs studio. To wit, I might want to embellish the song playback with cymbal hits. Moreover, I might want to spontaneously have a sequence in the song repeat once more, or "hold" as it were. Maybe I am missing something. But song more seems to intend a final, "untouchable" (during playback) song, even though there are other facilities for doing this.

    • @TUBEDIGGA
      @TUBEDIGGA  6 лет назад +3

      To access the pads, you may as well just convert the song to a new larger sequence. You can also set sequences in the song mode to repeat a certain amount of times from the list.

    • @TUBEDIGGA
      @TUBEDIGGA  6 лет назад +1

      Also, you can set the sequence loop points from the main page.

    • @furnacecreek1035
      @furnacecreek1035 6 лет назад +2

      Yes indeed that's what I've ended up doing and works like a charm, even as a "workaround". I think it becomes a matter of nomenclature, although while still in Song Mode one can move the sequencers around (versus their being "committed" once bounced from Song to Sequence). Either way, minor inconvenience. The point is the outstanding flexibility here.

    • @cmscss
      @cmscss 6 лет назад +1

      It’s a shame song mode hasn’t seen much love from Akai as convert to sequence breaks the ability to edit everything while working with the overall arrangement. Once i’ve arranged a song, it’s common to want tweak the bpm, swing and pitch, but still have everything editable. Also, can you even record an audio track along with song mode?

    • @furnacecreek1035
      @furnacecreek1035 6 лет назад +1

      +cmscss agreed and not sure about recording audio track along with. I gave up on Song Mode. It is too debilitating beyond covert to sequence (at the losses you mention)

  • @Talentocubano
    @Talentocubano 5 лет назад +1

    Great tutorial, If I change any content in the song sequences would it update in the longer sequence or do I need to convert again? " I have a Roland FA-08 Can I use with the MPC live TO WORK together , looking for a sampler and sequencer that I can sync with that has midi in and out". Thank you

    • @TUBEDIGGA
      @TUBEDIGGA  5 лет назад +1

      Talentocubano All sequences are independent in terms of notes, tempo, track assignments etc. However it’s the programs and/or sounds used on any, some or all tracks in those sequences that if modified, will be reflected if used in other sequences or tracks. Programs can be easily duplicated if you want one sequence to trigger the original version and another to trigger a variant of that. Yes I’m sure you can use your Roland no problem but I have no experience with that particular synth so I can only give generic midi advice.

    • @Jonathan_Doe_
      @Jonathan_Doe_ 3 года назад

      Renaming stuffs as easy clicking the pencil and typing it in, you can even plug a keyboard into the usb sockets to make typing easier.
      Even in Ableton, you should really keep things named, it’ll seem like a chore at first but it’s a timesaver when it comes to mixing, you won’t get lost wondering which sound was where.

  • @davidcooke779
    @davidcooke779 3 года назад

    So helpful! One thing I can't figure out though. Is there a way to move sequences around? For example, move sequence 16 up to Sequence 5. I find I build up a load of sequences and they get scattered around within the project.

    • @TUBEDIGGA
      @TUBEDIGGA  3 года назад +1

      Unfortunately you can only copy sequences to others so the current workaround is to copy a sequence to an unused one, then copy whatever sequence you want to be in its place etc. Alternatively you use song mode to arrange your sequences and convert your song to a longer self contained sequence. This will only work if you have maintained consistency between your track and program assignments for each sequence. All of this is detailed in my MPC Masterclass which is available here: www.tubedigga.com/mpcmasterclass

    Happy Thanksgiving! I have a question for you that seems really simple but for some reason I can't seem to figure it out.
    How do I loop a single slice I have within my sample edit screen in standalone mode? sometimes when I'm not 100% sure where the start and end points are going to be for a sample I like to loop it to make sure it sounds right while I'm lining up the start and end points.
    Of course I see the icon on the screen as well as see where it says loop when I press the shift button but I've tried every single method and it still won't loop that slice. I'm sure it's just something simple but I'm hoping you can help and thanks for your videos.

    • @TUBEDIGGA
      @TUBEDIGGA  5 лет назад +2

      Press and hold pad 13 or press and release pad 16. Pad 13 auditions the slice for as long as you press it and pad 16 auditions the slice until you press it again to stop it looping.

    Can you make a video on using the fade in and out on song mode?? if you made this video already, can you give me the video title?

    • @TUBEDIGGA
      @TUBEDIGGA  2 года назад

      There is no fade in or out in song mode. You’d have to use a workaround which could be applying volume automation to each track in your start and end sequences or bouncing the song to audio and fading the start and end points of the resulting sample. You can’t automate your master faders like you can on the Akai Force.

    Question. Can you save all samples and sequences to the SD or a usb thumb drive instead of internally I don’t want to store anything I sample in the live internal memory. ?

    • @TUBEDIGGA
      @TUBEDIGGA  6 лет назад +1

      Yes of course. It’s better to save your work to SD or USB as you can’t access the internal drive on your computer anyway. The internal drive is best used for a back up or for samples.

  • @dolomick
    @dolomick 6 лет назад

    Great lesson. How would you construct a chorus that had totally different vibes to the verse? Still copy and paste original sequence and then swap out all the parts, while trying to keep the sub on track 1, drums on 2, etc?

    • @TUBEDIGGA
      @TUBEDIGGA  6 лет назад

      You could copy the sequence and either record new notes for some of the elements or switch up the programs on some of you tracks and use transpose etc. There’s tons of ways to do things like this, it’s best to understand he behaviour of the system then think about how it can work for you personally.

    • @dolomick
      @dolomick 6 лет назад

      Thanks. I’m just trying to understand what happens if there’s no sub bass in my Chorus, but the verse has a sub bass on track 1. I guess my Chorus should leave track 1 empty (as opposed to putting my new sounds there) so that when I convert to the larger self-contained sequence I won’t run into the problems you alluded to. Thanks for the tutorials, there’s not many good MPC Live ones out there!

  • @TROGULAR10000
    @TROGULAR10000 6 лет назад

    Hi thanks for the video, liked and subscribed. I was wondering why the mute button doesn't stick when I mute a track, when the sequence starts over it unmutes itself. Also I am making songs and was wondering about mixing volumes. If I convert 10 sequences of 6 tracks each then the new single sequence will have 60 tracks? If instead all tracks 1 become a single track 1 how are track parameters such as volume handled if they differed from sequence to sequence?

    • @TUBEDIGGA
      @TUBEDIGGA  6 лет назад

      Not sure about the mute, have you recorded any mutes/automation? When you convert a song to a larger self contained sequence, it doesn’t create additional tracks. It just uses the same tracks in your original sequences but extends the sequence length for each track. Regarding track volume, in my old MPC5000 the track volumes were independent per sequence and you had to adjust the volumes to match which was a bit fiddly, unless you had duplicated sequences and their volume settings. The MPC Live retains track volumes which is much better. The easiest thing to do is to use additional/unused tracks set at different volumes if you want volume changes, or just automate the volume. I recommend you keep your tracks and programs consistent with each sequence, makes things a lot easier in the long run.

    • @TROGULAR10000
      @TROGULAR10000 6 лет назад

      Retaining the volumes, and tracks corresponding to one another, is the way I want it to work, so great. Also for the stuff I do it's not entirely impossible to have a song that's a single sequence, though of course it's not what it's designed for. I have to get my head around to what sequence settings I'll have to repeat manually, although smart copying and renaming might take care of that. Going to watch all of your videos and print the manual. As for the mute automation I will investigate. I had a mute turning on and off mysteriously before too and thought that might be automation, checked and there was no automation. I hope I don't have a bad unit with a crazy mute malfunction. Thank you very much for your help.

    is there any real advantage to changing the pitch of the sample at 10:44 in the sample editor with the ''process effect'' method vs changing the tempo and experimenting by altering it as a single pad through warp?

    • @TUBEDIGGA
      @TUBEDIGGA  5 лет назад +1

      Mike Petrow Yes, I’ve mentioned this many times in a lot of my videos. Warping is a ‘non-destructive’ real time effect that a sample is played through (similar to an insert effect) from within the program editor. It’s flexible but lacks quality. It’s fine and useable for certain content but introduces too many artefacts for my own taste. It’s good for quick and dirty adjustments for smaller sounds or certain sounds/effects that don’t need to sound natural. Pitch shifting in the sample editor is destructive (unless you undo of course) and is higher quality as a result. You can pitch samples up or down over a larger range of semitones and it sounds a lot smoother.

      You can either put a filter as an insert effect on the entire program, or a more flexible way is to put a filter on a sub mix channel and route the particular pads you want to filter to the sub mix

    • @TUBEDIGGA
      @TUBEDIGGA  5 лет назад

      For all of the features in song mode to work correctly, each sequence in your project must retain consistency between tracks and programs. For example, if track 1 has a different program running on it from one sequence to another, song mode won’t switch programs for you. Each program on every track will be dictated by the program that the song starts with (or the first sequence in your list within song mode). Hope that helps.

      TUBE DIGGA So how do you personally work with drum parts? I usually have 10-12 drum samples per program. And I want to figure out how to arrange those independently.

    • @TUBEDIGGA
      @TUBEDIGGA  5 лет назад

      Sometimes I have just one program with all my drum sounds on one track. I don’t need them on multiple tracks from a mixing perspective because they all have independent mixing and routing options. Plus I can see all my notes in one view within the grid editor. The only facility that is lost in this scenario is track mutes but that doesn’t bother me as I prefer to program rather than rely on muting. Other times I will have additional percussion on other tracks separate from my main drum track, particularly if that drum track is a chopped sample (like a breakbeat). Basically, if you’re struggling with your current workflow, just change it, you may find that sacrificing one small feature will allow you to gain a lot more. There’s many ways to go about producing in the MPC, and it takes a while to find the method that works best for you. Plus it can change every time you switch the machine on depending on what you want to achieve.

      GREAZE TV If you want the mpc to play and/or sequence the Novation then connect one of the midi outs on the mpc to the midi in on the Bass station. Set the midi channel and midi output port in the mpc to correspond etc. If you want the Novation to act as a midi controller for the mpc (so you can play samples etc on the keyboard) then connect the Novation midi out to one of the mpc midi inputs. You can’t do both simultaneously otherwise you’ll encounter a midi feedback loop, unless the Novation has a setting called LOCAL>OFF. If so switch local to off.

      Effects can be applied to pads, programs, outputs (master, submixes etc) so you can either do that before or after converting to a song. A song is just midi, unless you bounce it as audio, in which case you could add effects to that also.

      This was the behaviour in the MPC5000 but I seem to remember having issues with this in the Live. Not sure if it was a bug or a conflict with the Export to Sequence facility.
