We take a look at Season 1 House of the Dragon from the Perspective of Alicent Hightower and why she might feel justified in her decisions.
Maester Lunden of House Shifter takes us through the events from the point of view of Alicent Hightower and Otto Hightower as they try to make the best of a bad situation during the reign of King Viserys as the heir to the Throne Rhaenyra Targaryen continues to sully her reputation and oust herself as a liar.

its the reds the blacks were from a diffrent civil war, they splintered and made House Blackfyre

I tip my hat to the actors who've portrayed Alicent in the show. They took a character that most had just written off as some stereotypical wicked, scheming stepmother and actually made her into a complex and compelling person. Kudos to both of them 😊

Alicent's POV is exactly how the smallfolk of Westeros would have viewed HoTD - I mean, she was beloved of the smallfolk for a damn good reason. She identified with them!
I found Viserys to be a truly tragic man, but also a shitty father. Paddy knocked it out of the park, though. Top-tier performance.
Paddy made you feel so much sympathy, the writing overall and the acting helped elevate a character that you really had no real sympathy for in the book. - Thom

Viserys was so excited to have a son, and then forgot Aegon II.

He wanted a son by Aemma not Alicent and he couldnt be a father to the Hightower kids because the guy was a walking corpse. Why couldnt Alicent love her kids like Rheanyra, oh I forgot because she was too busy hating on Rheanyra.

Rhaenyra had like, 2 to 3 father figures for her kids, Alicent barely had the one. And Viserys wasn't nearly as bad as we last saw him for a good portion of their childhoods.

Alicent was used as a literal tool of state for twenty years, existing almost solely to produce heirs and spares--heck, she's even told this directly by her husband, further straining her relationship with presumptive heir and bestie Rhaenyra. It is only with Viserys on his deathbed that he seems to finally favor Alicent and their children; this late conversion grants her the first opportunity to exercise some control.
After all, George loves that "human heart in conflict with itself" and who is more conflicted than Alicent Hightower?
Yeah, Alicent is in a rough spot indeed. Conflicted between personal ties and duty as the Queen Mother
She reminds me of Hirrem Sultan. Alicent is a player in the game of Thrones.
I do feel Lyonel was an impartial advisor, but blind to his sons. Unable to act on the indiscreet Harwin or the scheming Larys, Lyonel set himself up for his own downfall.

I've appreciated Alicent's character quite a bit in the show, and I'm slowly making my way towards her part in Fire and Blood, as I'm reading it right now. Excited to see all the similarities/parallels between her portrayals
Overall, Alicent well and truly is overhated, and I feel that despite all the pressure, she did what she could as a Queen and mother despite the... very complicated state of the Royal Court at this time.
Why didn’t Rhaenyra scold her two sons and make sure that they wouldn’t bully Alicent’s son Aemond? At least Alicent wasn’t complaining all the time like Rhaenyra, and she seems like a good mother to me.

@@ev2155 Actually in the book (Fire and Blood) Alicent was a fairly good mother to her kids. This show doesn’t do her Justice, it’s too biased towards the characters in the black (Rhaenyra) faction, it doesn’t show any of the good character qualities of those in the green faction or enough of the bad qualities of those in the black faction. Can these shows ever try to get the characters in the books right for a change? Also Alicent has more agency in the book, she’s more ambitious and wanted her son to be the next king. While she was rather manipulative towards her kids, she wasn’t abusive and she did care about them. Also, in the book her son Aegon is not as bad as he’s made out to be either.

Why didn’t the creators try to be more even handed in their depictions of Alicent and Rhaenyra and their supporters instead of portraying the blacks as good and the greens as bad? Overall I think that King Viserys deserves most of the blame for causing the Dance of the Dragons what do you think?
@@jmwilliamsart I disagree. I don’t think they showed the blacks as good. The fanbase just doesn’t care because people tend to hate thieves/usurpers. The writers know this and have been very charitable to the Greens. They’ve made Alicent a victim of her circumstances, they seem to want to make Otto concerned with the stability of the realm, Criston Cole is a hurt man who was manipulated by Rhaenyra. If you ask me the writers have done all they can to make the Greens more likable

hell yeah im voting for the greens. Alicent at every turn tried to be honourable. She had every chance to put her children on the throne, but in the end she was willing to give it to Rhaenyra - which is honourable. But the fact the king rambled on about Aegon being king, Alicent followed law. simple as that. It just so happened that Viserys was talking about an ancient prophecy rather than his son. Miscommunication, but nevertheless, Alicent was right to take action. King Viserys is the worst king ever - he screwed everything up.
This is actually the most accurate retelling of Season 1, anything else is just Team Black Propaganda

Not gonna lie, never liked Rhaenyra, like the girl legit wanted to be queen, but never really tried to act the par, in truth I feel she would be seen almost like Joffrey if she was to become queen

Honestly, I think it's hard to say the greens put a foot wrong before Aegon started misbehaving. You could maybe make a case against Otto for pushing Alicent as queen but he doesn't do anything all that underhanded in reality. Viserys & Alicent seem to have a genuine degree of chemistry, and Otto doesn't order her to do anything beyond offer him kindness. Also he's well justified in that 1. the king needs a wife to secure the succession, 2. he knows that Viserys would be a good & kind husband to his daughter and 3. she would be well suited to managing the realm.
Perhaps you could argue that they intentionally undermined Rhaenyra's claim but, after the great council established the precedent, her claim was incredibly weak already. Literally the only thing keeping her in contention was Visery's guilt over Aemma's death. The great council was the closest they got to an actual democratic process and Rhaenyra as heir directly refutes it.
I'm ignoring Criston's murder of Joffrey because he wasn't really a green until after episode 5 so they weren't liable for that. You could say that they shelter him from answering for the murder but it's speculative in the show and it's equally likely that Corlys wouldn't want to risk any interference with the marriage, muting the calls for Criston to answer for the murder.

Was I the only one who already saw the green side? I haven’t watched it in a minute but the greens(most of them) have always wanted what’s best for the realm while the blacks act irrationally and cause more harm for the realm than anything
I like how both sides are in the right so it's like real life where it's about who you support instead of one side is evil and tries to steal the throne or the other is and are bad ruler's.

War always causes awful actions on both said. But if Greens didn't usurp throne solely because of Rhaenyra's gender, none of this would happen. If at least Greens presented better alternative, it could be justified, but Aegon was absolutely the worst possible canidate to the crown. You can acknowledge that there were war crimes in both Teams, and still recongnize that it was Time Black that was wronged and Rhaenyra who was rightfull heir. If country X attacks country Y and conflict starts, no doubt that there will be soldiers and leaders in country Y who will do descicable things. But it is X that started that war and all of this suffer is X fault. All atrocities Black faction did during war are fault of Greens and Greens alone.
I'm team black, you cant just backstab someone after licking their boots for 100 years and think you can get away with it.
All the so-called Deamon war crimes that are to come is on the hands of the Hightowers.
If the greens really thought the realm was with them they wouldnt steal the treasury, corronate Aegon the Usurper before the king was cremated. Those are the acts of people that know they are doing horrible, sneaky things no-one would accept. All their talk of the council of 101 and they dont even take that as a viable choice to get the crown because they know deep in their hearts the people would choose Rheanyra.
Hey have a question for you Warriors who could beat the mountain in regards to Greyworm, how many unsullied would it take to beat the mountain?
We'd put good money on a squad of 5-6 Dakotalange! A couple to cat and mouse him around and 3 to keep taking jabs at the unarmoured spots and possibly form behind. As long as they remain level headed and unified and don't allow the Mountain to break their momentum or split them up. If he kills one or two, they'd be in a lot of trouble I reckon! I enjoyed this. There were times when the deliberate bias was extremely blatant and times when the points made were pretty fair and reasonable. It's interesting to look at things like someone living in the world.
