From GIBSON:
Inspired by Original Drawings From 1957
Developed from original drawings discovered in the Gibson Archives, the Gibson Theodore Standard is based on a design from 1957 that was only previously available as a limited edition 2022 Gibson Custom model. Its features include a mahogany body, scimitar headstock with Grover® Mini Rotomatic® tuners, and double Florentine cutaways that provide unimpeded access to all 22 frets on the rosewood-capped, SlimTaper™ mahogany neck. The balanced construction is exceptionally comfortable, and the powerful ’57 Classic™ and ’57 Classic Plus humbucker™ pickups produce effortless sustain and a rich diversity of tones. It is available in Antique Natural, Vintage Cherry, and Ebony. A hardshell case is also included.

I’m probably in the minority, but I’m kind of fascinated by it. I like that Gibson is taking a risk putting this out, it’s a brand new, unique design based on historical artifacts. I’m gonna grab one
People are tripping, this thing is beautiful. Can’t wait to find a mint one on reverb for $1200-1500. 😮💨
There's a shop offering them at $1699 new right now.
I just spent $2,900 on a Gibson Les Paul Standard 60's guitar , now I want one of these too.
Taste doesn't matter, eh?
@@iloveitall It's almost like people like different things or something... Crazy, right?
Bees around honey, flies around shit.@@reverb508
Should probably put down some of that cash on a new set of glasses too while you're at it
You will have an constantly smiling audience with that guitar. @@reverb508
I can’t tell if I love or hate the design- it invokes a rose bud and I kind of like that idea- but it looks a lil too chunky. It’s an experiment for sure and I wish Gibson experimented more
I love the Theodore. I feel like it's a Gibson's take on a Telecaster.
I like it. It's a unique new but classic design. Sounded typically Gibson to my ears.
Hope they do a USA with P90’s and wrap tail. Although this is cool too
I have a Japanese-made Teisco Del Rey ET-200-N made in the 60's and the first time I saw that Gibson Theodore model I couldn't help notice how similar they both looked...
Either it's a total coincidence or someone in Japan saw the new model in the US back then and copied it ( the body shape anyway ) even though it was not put on the market...
Anyway, I've ordered the Gibson and I can't wait to receive it...
Thanks for the excellent video 👍👍
Also the Tokai Talbos.
@@guitartoneSA Yes 🙂 and I wish I had one...
@@jeromewagschal9485
Maybe Tokai have one in stock at the factory.
That would be great, I'll give them a call next week 🙂@@guitartoneSA
I dig the guitar.
Will we be able to get past our paradigm to appreciate it? After all the 58 V and Explorer as well as 63 Firebird all looked ugly to buyers in their eras. I do like they're trying something new.
I was thinking different pickups as well. Although the 57s are historically correct, I'd like a mini hum deluxe.... Pretty compelling guitar either way.
I agree. P90's or minis would set it apart sonically from an SG. have a Deluxe in Goldtop finish. It looks, plays and sounds great, but it is heavy. If you're looking for an axe w/mini-hums, check out these alternatives to the Deluxe: The Duncan 3 mini-hum equipped Ibanez Fireman. I have one. It is lighter, but sounds just as good. It's a weird shape, but they're less than half the price of the Deluxe. Also, the Crestwood Custom I have sounds great too. Also less than half the price of the Deluxe. Cheers!
@@nellayema2455 cheers. Will head down the rabbit hole!
When they released it for the first time (maybe two years ago ), they were loaded with P90's. When I first saw this shape I was like "naahh.." but it really grew on me.
Genuinely wondering when you learned to play so well, John! I'm inspired to keep practicing.
Swap the pickups out for a pair of Gibson P-94s ... and smile!😎
If I could pick between any Ginson model and this one, I think Ill go for this one, its just different.
I liked it. Sounds great. Has its own sound
I like that much better than the Custom shop version its spec,d much better 👏👍🤘
As someone whos music probably wont be discovered until 20-50 years from now, i have never bonded with a guitar more
Maybe this is just me, but I think this thing looks metal af! Can't help but wanting to play 80s thrash with this guitar, haha.
I was so stoked when I heard these came out but was devastated when it didn't have the P90s, wraparound bridge and dot inlays. Do you guys think there will be a USA version of these with those specs?
I’ve never been a fan of this basic shape of guitar, Flying Vs, jakscons, etc. However, I was intrigued with the backstory and my new Theodore in Cherry just arrived yesterday. Going to spend some time with it next week.
If there was a left-handed version I would order one. I think it is beautiful. I love my Explorer and I love the headstocks on both the Theodore and my Explorer.
It has definitely grown on me. Definitely would be awesome to see at a Hardcore show, Blues, Country even.
Love the Theodore❤
Excellent playing and demo. I especially liked the playing over a drumbeat only. An interesting guitar with a clunky shape. They may catch on.
Good price,I like the natural color better and a pickup choice of the 57's or P90's.
Sounds good. Any neck dive?
Truly one of the guitars of all time
Funny I had the same thought before he gave his score I was thinking those pickups sound good but it would be really boss with p90... I don't have Gibson kind of money, but if I did I'd rather get that than a new SG standard (same neck profile)... If I own this guitar I would put a Seymour h.b sized p90 in the neck -then you'd have the best of both worlds
How would you compare it tonally to an SG? I actually like the way it looks I’m weird!
I like the cutaway access like the epi Genesis cutaway I like .
I like the look a lot better than the custom shop model.
P-90’s would be very cool, perhaps they are setting us up for the tried and true “special and junior” models to come later.
Acoustically it rang like a bell.
The wider nut width may play a bit easier for larger hand players.
I really like it!!!
Judging from the comments before me, I am in the minority at this point.
I wish they kept the P-90's and wraparound from the CS model. I'd buy this over a LP Special. It's so weird looking that I kinda love it.
I dig it, and thank god they put the switch in the correct place. That’s the one thing which bothers me about Les Pauls.
Good point, I think it pays off to have all controls closer like the SG, better to reach.
Gibson *needs* to shake up their catalog a bit. I’m glad to see this design finally being offered, and at a *relatively* affordable price (w/ hard shell case !). Give us more options, though. P90s, a slimmer (42-ish) unbound, dot-inlay neck, in Natural, please?
Idky ppl hate it , its a kool af guitar , also has waaayy better frett acces than a LP. Theodore 4 da win !
Id love to se a limited run with OpenBook Headstock that would be crazy but i think it suits the Theodore.
I love the Explorer headstock BUT not on this... IMO, a matching "tulip" style one would be better.
I Love tge guitar. Uts refreshing ,differnt a nes old shaoe without beubg a v ,x ,z or crazy shape. Its cool.
Perfect Mid Century Modern guitar !
How is the neck dive?
A P-90 in the neck, and it's perfect.
Does it exhibit any neck dive?
Beautiful guitar, I hope that the Epiphone version inspired by this Gibson also comes out, in a price range that is not too high for us common guitarists 😅
🎸💥
A pair of Dirty Fingers PUP's would be ideal in this.
I like it.
? Why do suppose Gibson did not use 50s style wiring on this guitar?
Looks a lot like the vintage Teisco "Tulip" style guitars out of Japan.
I suppose Gibson went to a 2 control master volume / master tone layout to reduce production cost. That’s a mistake from my perspective as using various combinations of the four controls is part of the Gibson magic in the hands of a knowledgeable player.
They should make one with Firebird pickups! Would go with the headstock
Yeah it would be cool. That's an Explorer headstock on that Theo though, not a Fire bird headstock.
@@auntjenifer7774 thanks good point
I convinced that Gibson’s just putting stuff out on dares that anyone would want it.
Bet it sounds like a special
9.0
I think they need to make an Epi version.
no shielding in the control cavity.........
Gibson never does that (from what I know) and it's fine, my gibsons don't make any unwanted noise
Very similar to the TDR Tulip design
Obviously with better electronics.
To all people who find it ugly: nah, it's peculiar and cool. I think that it can be a valid option to the SG '61. I have the Epi version of that SG, so...
Looks like a tulip
Needs a whammy
it looks like the first step of the YMCA dance
Next month the “M” guitar will come out, followed by the “C”……
It's literally just a les paul shaped different....apple does the same thing lol
Via gleam
When I first seen this model I did not like it, but I think if they took the horns off and made it like a drop body it might look cool. The horns just don't look right to me.
I see a tulip. gibson?
It's similar to Tokai talbo.
Not a big fan of how it looks , but sounds good.
The choice of headstock seems unfortunate. Aside from that, it looks cool.
Why do you say that?
@@huli8557 it looks a bit too big and weird. That headstock works on an Explorer because an Explorer is huge. This would look better with a smaller headstock. Maybe it'd look more normal if the headstock was red to match the body.
Mmmmmmm...no 😂
But love the playing 🙂
I don't know for the priceI think I would get an SG standard instead it looks too much like a cheap Japanese guitar the reason it's expensive is because they made a limited run of them
Id give about $ 269.00
Why didn’t Gibson come up with a new design instead of continuing to sell 70 year old ones?
😂 They don't need to compete when they can just lawsuit their competition into oblivion !?
No ty ceezar,again!
It seems like a bad idea. We'll see I guess.
Needs coil siplit for both pickups.
Sounds great, love Gibson, however this particular body shape just isn’t my taste.
this thing is the schecter razorblade all over again. its so ugly that I want it
Can’t hate it cause of the EXP headstock…..but it’s not pretty
cool looking, does not really excite sound wise.
Bit of a statement to spend Gibson money on something that looks like this.
Love the design but not the price 😅
これタルボに似てないか?www知らんけど
looks like a pineapple, and the explorer headstock so does not belong on this thing!
Make a usa Firebird for gods sake not this silly thing.m
That thing is HIDEOUS
And sounds as bad as it looks
@@JoeMarauder-xk6wj why would the hideous shape change the sound ?
@@ny7294 I never said the shape changed anythng. 57's are the worst Gibby Pups in existence ... as evidenced in this Video.
@@JoeMarauder-xk6wj that opinion is definitely a subjective one , but I'm sure the amp settings and playing techniques used have more to do with it than the 57s .
@@ny7294 I'm very glad for you.
that's a no for me dawg...
There’s a good reason that one never went into production lol
It seems Ted McCarty wasted all his good ideas on the 335 and had this left over… (idk the history so feel free to correct me) but damn that has got to tbe rhe ugliest guitsr i’ve ever seen
Doesn’t matter how it plays ir sounds, that is a very, very ugly guitar. Easy to see why Mr. McCarty never put that one out.
Thank you. Couldn't have put it better myself.
I don’t know why, but I like it a lot. It reminds me of a Frank Brothers guitar. Almost like an Explorer and SG melted on top of one another.
I think it's sharp.
😢Dear Lad, Lass or Whatevs, have you never had the pleasure of seeing a Moderne, or Map?😂
Ugly guitar is subjective. I dig it a lot it Has a punk rebel Character Look Which makes me want it
Shape makes me nauseous 🤢
Terrorífica.. la guitarra mas fea de la historia.. Me la regalan y la hago astillas para la calefacción 😮
Your playing is pretty boring and does nothing for the video. But everything else is decent.
Looks very much like a Rickenbacker “tulip” guitar. Yup. Ugly.
Well done Gibson…. Ugliest guitar ever. 😂
wow these are ugly!
Ugliest Gibson ever.
this is a mistake
It looks like Gibson left an SG in the dryer too long.
Also, its a blatant ripoff of a Teisco, Kay, Tokai, etc. Tulip design.
It’s not a ripoff of anything. The design dates to a drawing by Theodore (hence the name) McCarty from 1957. Gibson never produced it until, what, 2022? when the ‘57 drawing was discovered. The Teiscos and other “tulip” shapes didn’t come out until the late 1960s. Rickenbacker did have similar, but not identical, shaped solidbodies in the late 1950s.
@@jfinester But there were Teisco drawings of the Tulip design, drawn by J.R. Tulip (that's why they called it the Tulip), dating back to 1953, they just didn't put it out until later.
🙄
Gibson actually did it. They made a guitar that's even uglier than a Telecaster. No, I won't buy it. No chance. Way too fugly. DO NOT WANT.
😂 The Telecaster isn't ugly at all ! Especially the 59 customs 72 custom are extremely nice looking guitars.
@@auntjenifer7774 TOTALLY a matter of personal taste. To me a Telecaster is as ugly as an earful of ticks!
@@Turboy65 🤣👌 what ever, at least we can agree on the Theodore !
It’s spicy
It sounds great and maybe is pretty ergonomic, but to me it doesn't look good at all.
