  • Interstellar scientist, theoretical physicist and 2017 Nobel Prize for Physics co-winner Kip Thorne's address to UCD Literary & Historical upon reciept of the James Joyce Award.
Born in Logan Utah in 1940, Kip Thorne received his B.S. degree from Caltech in 1962 and his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1965. He returned to Caltech as an Associate professor in 1967 and became Professor of Theoretical Physics in 1970, The William R. Kenan, Jr., Professor in 1981, The Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics in 1991, and The Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics, Emeritus, in 2009. Thorne's research has focused on Einstein's general theory of relativity and on astrophysics, with emphasis on relativistic stars, black holes and especially gravitational waves. He was cofounder (with R. Weiss and R.W.P. Drever) of the LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory) Project, which made the breakthrough discovery of gravitational waves arriving at Earth from the distant universe on September 14, 2015.
Thorne was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1972, the National Academy of Sciences in 1973, and the Russian Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society in 1999. He has been awarded the Lilienfeld Prize of the American Physical Society, the Karl Schwarzschild Medal of the German Astronomical Society, the Albert Einstein Medal of the Albert Einstein Society in Berne, Switzerland, the UNESCO Niels Bohr Gold Medal from UNESCO, and the Common Wealth Award for Science, and was named California Scientist of the Year in 2004. For his book for nonscientists, Black Holes and Time Warps: Einstein's Outrageous Legacy (Norton Publishers 1994), Thorne was awarded the American Institute of Physics Science Writing Award, the Phi Beta Kappa Science Writing Award, and the (Russian) Priroda Readers' Choice Award. In 1973 Thorne coauthored the textbook Gravitation, from which most of the present generation of scientists have learned general relativity theory. Fifty-two physicists have received the PhD at Caltech under Thorne's personal mentorship.
In 2009 Thorne stepped down from his Feynman Professorship at Caltech in order to ramp up a new career in writing, movies and continued scientific research. His current research is on the nonlinear dynamics of curved spacetime. His current writing focus is the textbook Modern Classical Physics, coauthored with Roger Blandford (to be published in late 2016). His first Hollywood movie was Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, on which he was executive producer and science advisor. For his role embedding extensive real science in this movie and explaining it in his book, The Science of Interstellar, he was awarded the National Space Society’s Space Pioneer Award for Mass Media.

His greatest achievment is not in science. It is in his ability to inspire people. How many, how much, science was inspired and advanced due to him? Probably far more than anything he did personally. That is no small feat. Very few people can inspire such as this man.

Mass and Spacetime have equality of gender: one bosses the other because mass always forces spacetime to curve and the curved spacetime makes mass to follow it wherever it wants to!!!.... i.e, Mass says: I shall curve you.... Spacetime says: but I shall make you follow me in my curves!!

    Professor Thorne -
If GAS BONDING is a fact, Gravity/Black Holes are not.
All downward falling motion, including Newtons apple, begins when rising gas molecules becomes trapped gas molecules, known as GAS BONDING, which take on a state of solid mass, blocking out it's electrons motion, it's fire power, thus becomes ENERGY LOCK lifeless gas molecules, and falls downward in real time, following it's electrons unlimited potential velocity, at the speed of light, connecting with the earth ENERGY CONSERVATION SYSTEM, establishing a downward falling path for trapped lifeless gas molecules/solid objects only.
Equating the above fact with the physical universe, same as Einstein E = MC2 equates with the physical universe.
E = ENERGY = MM = MOLECULE MOTION = Molecules in motion within star flames earth gases birds and balloons plains and rockets, even us humans rise from molecules in motion, creating an ENERGY FLOW, the ruling force of the universe.
M = MASS = GB = GAS BONDING = Gas Binding take on a state of solid mass, blocking out it's electrons motion, it's fire power, thus becomes ENERGY LOCK lifeless gas molecules, and falls downward in real time.
C2 = LIGHT SPEED = E = ELECTRONS = Electrons Unlimited Potential Velocity, at the speed of light, connecting with the earth ENERGY CONSERVATION SYSTEM, establishing a downward falling path, for trapped lifeless gas molecules/solid objects only.
Gravity is a mythical concept that's mentally applied, with guaranteed results to it's point of origin, the BRAIN !
    This they should've known !

What hope do the young students have in the light of this baloney being fed to them?
50 times the luminosity of all the stars in the universe put together in a fraction of a second. All deduced from a fifth of a second "chirp" which actually made no sound. My fat Auntie.

This poor man has sucked up all the trendy "cosmological" views and is a true believer of Einstein, Hawking, Interstellar movies and Captain Kirk. Handing him a Nobel Prize is insulting to everyone who ever deserved one. Black holes, gravitational waves are an article of faith to him. He has no sense of curiosity or wonder. Don't even think about being skeptical. It's all true kids.

Kip has personally consulted me on numerous various occasions when he could and has dedicated his entire life to astrophysics, cosmology and all sorts. Einsteins work was never easy to finish. I for one thank him for
his contributions with his fellow colleagues for continued research into LIGO/VIRGO and all of the fantastic scientific research which has also helped me. You have no right to bash this mans credentials.Thank you for your contributions Professor.
