- The Rover 75 has become a regular favourite on the fleet getting plenty of use, but this week has started making a worrying thump or clunk from under the car. Lets fix that, and a couple of other niggles #tinkering

That's a proud Rover again! Please sell this beautiful 75 to someone who gives it all the care it deserves.
Straight after the video I'll be listening to Faith no more, great song!
Lovely car lovely colour they dont make cars like these any more well done Matt
This Rover is a very attractive car, it will be a shame when it moves on to its new owner, hopefully they will lavish it with the same care you have Matt ❤.
Those large rear number plates are certainly a good road safety feature.Take after P5 & P4
Has the fuel filter come apart in the tank yet Matt...its in the tank on the nearsìde...u have to take the back seat squab out to access it... thats a work of art too...watch the cooling fan electric motor doesnt fail as well....... Keep Smiling.....Bob....☺
Im working on the assumption the last guy did it and crossing my fingers!
Putting the back seat in is an art in itself. Great design bmw
Lovely Jubbly video Matt, I will really miss the 75 when it goes. If only everything to fix was as cheap to repair as the the exhaust hangers. Shame it's not an Auto, I'd of been very tempted to travel😢.
Nice car that! I recognise various E46 BMW components. It’s a shame that BMW disowned it just after launch.
Put a hot air gun near the crankshaft sensor and after a while it will cut out, was common on them for the crankshaft to die when warm
thats a great idea, Ill try that!
Matt, you really need to re-mortgage the house and get one of those car lifts.
Great little Tinkering video Matt, the rear badge transforms the rear of the car, I found that when I replaced the badge on the front of my old 75.
My Cactus is making a metallic noise underneath and on inspection its a exhaust mount that's rusted away! Another job to do one day;
At least thats a cheap and hopefully easy fix for you!
@@furiousdriving yeah, possibly going to weld a new bit on or its about £20 quid for a new mount.
🙂 One to cherish. Far too nice to sell on...
Probably the heat shield. It came loose on mine and in the end I pulled it off 😂
underneath could do with a good clean
Yeah it’s absolutely filthy, no,point in applying rust protection
Another potential series - possibly a prime time quiz show - title, with a possible spinoff for Range Rover owners of 'What other electrical system is that connected to?' 😁
Poor Crown Vic in the background.
Re pricing cars, as i have said before i have a Honda Civic 1.6 SE Executive with all leather interior and 58k on Clock. Phoned up "you buy any car "Blah Blah and got a valuation off of them. £530 if the car is mint. ?? needless to say they wont be getting it. Another thing is this ULEZ crap which basically makes any car over 1600 cc a liability. All this stuff affects the price of your car.. I sincerely hope you get the cash you are looking for . Later😊
You don’t have a prop shaft 😂
Keep thinking its a P6...
Discount that as a possible noise in the centre of the car then…….😆
Is there a heatwave in the north of England because everyone on RUclips is banging on about the heat ?
Cold and raining down south
Do you live on the Isle of Wight? Im in Kent!
My Mrs is awful to her cars - hates spending any money - even hates paying for MOT's and consumables. As usual she tells me
"there is a knocking from under the car when I go over broken tarmac"
"Is it only then?"
"no- well if I go left or right or over a speedbump it does it too"
"does it drive ok?"
"yeah"
"will be the exhaust hitting the bottom or a heat shield - nip into Kwik Fit and get it checked as the centre pipe is still under warranty"
........... 3 months and out of warranty later........
"went to Kwik Fit and they said its the heat shield - they want £20 to fix it."
"did you get it done?"
"no"
Meanwhile its 3 years since I heard
" the aircon is very weak"
"Get it regassed"
"I will look into it"
As it finally starts to warm up I expect to hear about sweaty travels........
i just absolutely love this channel. No matter what challenges matt, he always comes out smiling and still feeling positive. Gonna miss the 75. lets hope the new owner will look after it.
Clonking from the Universal joint on the propshaft, am I missing something ? FWD Mr FD 😂😊 I owned a 03 plate Rover 75 1.8 exactly the same spec and colour as yours (Non Turbo though) Wish I never sold it 😢 It was a beautiful comfortable car, I love the way the doors shut with a quality thud. The car went to live in Spain with it's new owner.
Is this not a P5?
@@furiousdriving Think you have too many cars and are getting confused 😂 Now a 1.8t Rover 75 rear wheel drive conversion, that would be interesting 👍
Nice to see this getting improved. Paul Roverman on the Project Nigel channel has just bought a pristine-from-about-twenty-feet Rover in the same colour as this one, Wedgwood Blue, which is also going to be an interesting repair series.
Ive seen but not seen that, its on my to watch list!
From the video the car is filthy underneath, you need to get the Rover up on a ramp, thoroughly wash the whole of the underside, wheel arches having removed the wheel arch liners, THEN apply any form of rust protection.
Phantom propshaft and cats in the ECmew! 😁
My neighbor bought a new Rover 75 when the model was released, and I liked everything about it. I was shocked when BMW killed it. The undercarriage of this Rover seems to be in good shape with a minimum of rust, which is great for a car of this vintage.
When the 75 was released, the press wondered why you couldn't find them in the UK. It was because they all seemed to be in Munich! I went to visit a friend at the end of 1999 and the number of 75s on the road there was amazing - the Bavarians really took them to their heart.
Gonna miss the 75 ! 😢 Just hope the new owner of it looks after it. 😊
There was a red 1.8t with 30k in my local area and sold for £3850. So your definitely in the correct price range.
But keep the rare rover seat back storage.
Thats good to know. Im not listing it yet as its still fun and jobs to do but good to know Im on the right lines, and Im sure someone paying that for it would be planing to look after it, which is what I want to happen
@@furiousdriving Can we have a video / update on the 200Vi ? Love that car please
Yipee I'm 1,520th today
2:29 Prop shaft ?? on a front wheel drive car, come on Matt has I been s long day?
As soon as you described the thumping under the armrest I knew it’d be the exhaust hangers. Been there a couple of times 😂
I guess its a pretty common issue!
Changed the drop links on my 2000 my Rover 75 1.8 yesterday, now I can attack speed bumps silently! A return to Rover wafting! 🙂 I did the identical fix on my rear interior light! 🤣
ha! Its the only way to sort it permanently!
It definitely could not be a propshaft UJ. The car is front wheel drive. Glad it was a simple fix in the end.
But it’s a P6? Oh wait…
@@furiousdriving 😂😂
Well done and glad it was an easy fix. Just replaced the front lower wishbones on my 90,000 mile MK6/7 fester. At low speeds on potholed roads esp turning into side roads it sounded like a loose exhaust clunking at the rear. Eventually tracked it down to 2 or 3mm movement in a front suspension balljoint... amazing how sounds echo around the body shell.

Me: (finishing off an AeroPressed coffee)
"MUST BUY FURIOUS DRIVING MUG!" 😆
Love these easy little 'lunchtime' fixes. Very satisfying. I have a 2001 diseasel 75, so I'll miss watching this one on FD when you come to sell. And secretly I'm hoping you won't have the heart to part with it...
Oh what a feeling
When the light falls out the ceiling

Was really hoping the 75 was going to join the fleet! Really hope it goes to a good home that will care n preserve it👍
Well even with old cars there has to come a point where the majority of problems do eventually get ironed out.
Great when annoying problems are easy fixes! Looks even more like a great car now.
What an amazing tea shelf the boot lid of a Volvo 740 makes lol
The most practical car you can own!
75's don't like led's matt. I asked the owners club about it and they warned me not to do it.
We Care A Lot about long-suffering Matt. He had thought things were Falling To Pieces with his 75 - but before having a Midlife Crisis, he had one Last Cup Of Sorrow and decided not Everything's Ruined after all. From Out Of Nowhere, he had an Epic idea and produced A Small Victory - thus faith was restored! 😁🤘🎸
Best comment of the day!!
The fit of the overhead light needs a little more tweaking to eliminate that front gap.
What a wacky triangular-shaped muffler.
Nothing more annoying than a rattle or clunk that can't be identified, had a new Cortina estate that had a rattle that appeared to be coming from behind the dashboard but no one could find the cause of it. Wasn't until she was two years old was it found, an enamelled mug in the heater air intake still with dried tea stains and the owners initials. It had finally moved so was visible through the intake grill. A scratching of heads as to how it got there and over the cost of it being removed, Ford didn't want to do anything and denied all liability, I didn't think the line workers could drink tea on the line. The heater and vents worked better after, it actually blew a gale.
Okay, so I ignored the comment about propshaft noise on a front-wheel drive car and the fact you got someone else to replace the exhaust hangers - but the woodscrew bodge is a step too far
Matt its a ULEZ compliant classic. Worth good money for that alone.
I'd love to import that Rover to Canada, but it would be a rust bucket in a matter of months. I just don't trust our roads.
Yeah rubber components again for comfort sound deadening and safety
Did you use a wood screw from the Crown Vic to repair the Rovers interior light 🤔
Have you got any yellow caps to hide the rear number plate screws??
YOU'VE BENT A DRIVESHAFT, IT HAPPNED ON MICRAS BACK IN THE DAY IF YOU HIT A KERB HARD.
Volvo's and coffee go well together and plenty of tea shelf points.
Very nice car but not quite as good as my British racing green Connie 😊
That light with a screw is a bodge but permanent 😂
Ooh, i need to get the 9-5 Aero up on a ramp pronto because I’m having the same issue. I was thinking subframe bushes etc. I did think about the exhaust but I can’t see any missing hangers either. I’m going to have another look, because a full set of rear subframe bushes for a 9-5 come in at between £150 and £200 , plus labour because I’m neither equipped or confident enough to attempt the job myself. Also there are a lot of them in the full set - around ten apparently. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻
Bloody wood screws, reminds me of the crown Vic.😅
Matt, I had a clonking sound at the left front of my Merc W204 The last thing I'd done was to remove the strut to replace the spring. So I removed it, refitted it and the clonk was gone so it hadn't been fitted quite right the first time.
Thanks for the great tip with the wood screw to retain the rear light.
I see the quattroporte is getting near when you sell this 😂
Hi Matt. what's happening to the P6 V8
Here's the plan. Junk the Crown Vic, put the 4.6 V8, into the Rover, the Turbo K into the Freelander and the normally aspirated K into the Mini...Job done and no wellding!
techically it is the correct V8 for that but would need ALL the big hammers to make it fit
That, my friend, is an ingenious plan. I totally second that afternoon's work😂
Seriously, it's a top idea
I would love to import a Rover 75 to the US.
Isn’t it great when you get a few easy fixes
Ohh dear the best car on fleet is going 😭
It’s the Nut behind the Wheel 🧐🇬🇧
you are right do not ket the rover go cheap... those days are gone for nice examples. S types are also staying steady or rising slowly so i am hanging on to mine
Nice mate how much do you want for it
It's a Rover 🤓🔧🪛🔦🤔
👍🏴
Lovely job Matt 🚗🚙🚘👏👏👏👏⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks!
heat shields
Number plates usually come up looking great just with car polish that has fine abrasive. Makes it more difficult for dirt to stick too/to.
And if they don't, they're fairly cheap to replace. Oddly, new plates really do seem to make a difference to the look of an old car.
Generally I've found the following is normally right for diagnostics on rover 75:
'Clunk' when braking lower rear wish bone.
'Rattle' over pot holes drop links or balljoint.
'Moooooo' is wheel bearings.
'Clang clang' is exhaust hangers
'rattle' from the trim is engine mounts
'Crunch bang bang' is upper rear arms.
'Tick tick tick' from the back is dead handbrake shoes.
'Whhhhhhhooooop' your fan is gone making the air con over heat
'twang pshhhhhhh' you've bust a front spring.
'dagdagdagdag' your boot stops need adjusting
It's a tough call to make as it's pretty much the exact Rover 75 model, engine, colour i know you wanted and it's in such good condition but i appreciate the fleet is big and you've got other cars you want to do things with. I hope Furious Junior can forgive you
I might just get the hanger rubbers changed on mine too. The boot badge was thw same on mine as well. lots of easy fixes on the 75.
That's the trouble you can't find bumps when you need them 😅😊😅😊
Great fix, Matt. Exhaust problems can drive you mental. Glad it was an easy fix. Well done. Whowver buys this beautiful car is getting a greatt deal.
Easy and simple fix! (luckily) Sad to see the 75 go in the future, hope it gets a good home that really appreciate this car.
Check the rear brake backplates for corrosion. Mine made a very similar noise just before the handbrake shoe retaining pins pulled through the plate.
Aint it refreshing time when repairs turn out to be simple. Someone going to have a lovely car there and will have to pay the price. There are a few 90's, early 00's motors with rising values, maybe the EV push are making those inclined look for something which can be repaired at home? Wonder if the Fiat jas sold or did i miss it?
Got a clonk from the front end of my W126. Dont think its an easy fix like on your Rover 🤬. Gonna have to give it a go with the crowbar of truth next weekend 😮
Well done, nice easy fix. Which you definitely deserve after Crown Victoria Gate!
Another worthwhile improvement would be to re-glue the saggy door card cloth - especially on driver’s door 🤔
yes but its an annoying job to get it apart and do properly
@@furiousdriving usually is (ask me how I know 😃)!
Ya see furious - I would have called this vid - 'things that go clunk in the night'
My money was on exhaust hangers. Wheel bearings... maybe a click but those usually sound like someone's taken an angle grinder to metal in a garage at the end of the street.
Looks good. I would put a couple of yellow screw caps on the rear number plate to tidy it up.
I fitted a rubber mount on that cross member to give the exhaust more support on my Cdti model.
I had the estate version great car but watch out for front springs they are bad when they break they stick into your tyre and make a right mess, you can buy some sheilds that stop the broken spring dig into the tyre,
It takes some getting used to how long cars last now as they don't rust as badly as they did in the seventies when a car was lucky to reach it's 10th birthday!
Engine mounts collapsed could be.
Yes you've got to see the light 😅😊😅😊
Regarding the intermittent cutting-out: my BMW E60 started doing this before finally coming to a stop. It seems (according to the garage that is looking at it) that the box with the ECU has got waterlogged at some point, corroding the ECU connections. If the 75 takes a similar approach to housing the ECU, I'd check that out.
The rover 75 ecu is right underneath the window Sheen and when ( not if) the drain hole gets blocked it sits in water.
It’s a lovely car Matt and you know that by adding that boot badge 🤔 you have increased the value of said car by £2 😂😂😂, amazing !!!!!!
at least that much!
If u wrap a scarf around the exhaust it cures a rattly exhaust Matt... with the crank sensor...its easier to take out the air cleaner box to access it... then reach down from the top...Happy Motoring.....Bob.....
Hopefully a fire retardant scarf!
Nice to see easy fixes that actually make a difference! BTW, does that T-shirt actually say, “Brolen Rovers,” or are my eyes deceiving me?
its a very curly font!
Is that a rust hole just above the edge of the heat shield at 4:23? Ironic that you were talking about Waxoyl just then....
No, I think it’s just a shadow
Yeah…another win😀👍
Yes Matt, it’s always Faith No More over Lionel 😂😂
Always!
Never thought I would hear a Faith No More reference on this channel.
They were amazing, saw them at Wembley the '90s
haunted
