    Horizon Forbidden West has finally come to PC, and with this new release we decided to see how the game performs in a variety of GPUs, 40 to be exact, so after many hours of nothing but tests, we're finally ready to share our results, and some weirdness we noticed along the way.

      @RotaryJunkie 3 месяца назад

      @@schluckauff I'd suspect the 3600 as part of the problem, yes. It's a good chip, but every PS5/XSeries game is at its heart designed for 8 cores. With the 3600 being relatively low on clock speed (albeit not as low as the console parts) and down on cores, it isn't shocking to see it choke a bit here.
      For now, try going /up/ on graphics settings, it may help with perceived smoothness. If you have an aftermarket cooler, some overclocking may help as well.
      Failing that, the 5700X is down to pricing not dissimilar to the 3600 when it was released, and it is a 65W TDP part just like the 3600 non-X so even if you're stuck on a stock cooler, it'll do well. Avoid the 5600X as it's largely a side-grade from the 3600 due to the core limitation. The 7600X puts up a good fight most of the time, but that's because it has brute force clock speeds just high enough to play "catch up" on the 2 missing threads vs a console.

    Upscaling broken on the very cards that need it most at the lower end. I hope it gets fixed with patches and/or driver updates. That said, upscaling was tested on Very High, where these cheaper cards likely won't be used. I wonder if it works properly or at least better at Medium settings?

    FG "uses" a bit of VRAM so I'm not surprised it has issues on 8GB GPU's at maxed settings, even more so in the case of the 4060 that also is limited in bandwidth. Maybe you could try FG with the lowest settings on the 4060 to see if this results the uplift you would normally expect?

      Vram is causing the issue on the RTX4060 as seen by a few game testing sites as “high” and “very high” graphical settings often peak at around 9.5gb of usage which cripples the 8gb vram buffer and FG does often use in many titles between 1.5-2GB of vram so the RTX4060 is limited to medium graphics settings for a smoother gameplay scenario.

    • @conyo985

      Yup at higher resolutions very high or even high textures will need more than 8GB VRAM. Its swapping into system RAM thus lower framerates.

    Can confirm 4070ti super has crazy frame pacing issues with frame gen on with little uplift in performance, 95 fps to 110
    Game seems to run a lot better with taa
    Even dlaa introduces frame pacing issues, just anything that runs on the tensor cores adds weird inconsistencies
    1440p native taa and frame cap in rtss ( with front edge sync ) is currently the way to go

    have you taken into account that the game is compiling shaders the first time you start the game and after Hardware and/or driver changes? This takes around 15 min in the main menu and should be visible as higher CPU load. It should have high performance impact while playing without shaders beiing pre compiled and might explain some the wierd behaviour, like on the 4060. Not for frame gen though as 8GB Vram is just not enough for FG.

  • @Eternalduoae
    @Eternalduoae 3 месяца назад

    @18:00 - when you average across all threads, you get essentially the same %usage between the two scenarios? I don't see how you're saying that the CPU is being utilised more?!
    Also, please note that the core frequency at native is locked at the maximum, whereas it's lower on FG+DLSS - indicating that the CPU is not working as hard (as you would expect!)
    FG-on results for the RTX 4060 make 100% sense since the card is effectively out of VRAM and the framegen requires even more memory on top of DLSS, anyway...
    The reason why the 4060 probably loses a little performance with upscaling on when the RX 7600 and RX 6600 XT manage to increase very slightly may be due to the narrow bus width combined with the smaller 24MB of L2 compared with the 32 MB of the L3 on both AMD cards. Note that the lows drop in all cases - likely due to VRAM penalty mentioned above.
    The RTX 3060 Ti manages to increase performance likely due to the wider bus width compared to the other cards we're talking about - despite the smaller on-die cache.

    The common denominator on the cards that show weird FSR/DLSS issues its the Memory Bus. AMD got round the bus issue with infinity cash but NVidia doesn't have this technology. I think 128bit isn't enough to allow DSR/DLSS to work on this game for some reason.
    For me the 6600xt looks pretty strong native at 1080p which is fine for me as that is what my monitors are. If you were going 4k you wouldn't get a 60 class or lower card from either AMD on NVidia. I don't know why people go 4k if they only have a 60 class card surely they would be better going 1440p and spending the saved money on a 70 or 80 class card.

      Judging by power consumption, Nvidia GPUs are clearly underutilized in this game. No wonder they perform slower than usual. In HZD, for instance, their power draw was more or less standart, that is why they performed better in that game.
      Firstly, Nvidia needs to enable rebar, as it brungs 5-15% perf improvement in this game. Also the game devs should optimize their product better.

    It's so fracking sad to see the 4060 Ti perform like shite compared to the 3060 TI. A card 2.5 years (3060 ti was released on Dec 2020 while the 4060 Ti was released on May 2023) older is literally performing better than that POS.
    EDIT: Frame generation is a feature that should not be relied on period. It just drives the card makers into gimping real performance in their cards. This is going to be the main reason we'll see smaller gains from the next generation cards compared to whatever gains we even got from this generation (except for the 4090 ).

      I think you got it a bit backwards, Upscaling reduced VRAM usage as it is rendering the image/frame at a lower resolution and the upscaling it to 4k or what every your monitors resolution it at. This allows the VRAM usage to be lower and gain more frames. So with this said yes something weird is going on, as upscaling should give more FPS rather than take.

      @@jacobhurley5052 yes.. that in theory should reduce the Vram when using upscaled cause it render on low resolution.. but u need to take note that FG will require more VRam when use and other factor will effect gpu performance like memory bandwidth and bus.. which if u see none of the high end gpu have problem.

      I mean I felt the same way. But only cus I bought into the idea that the story is bland. Which maybe it is. But did you miss the beautiful open world and exhilarating robot Dino combat.
      It might be a little bland and predictable. But it's fun, well made and Sooo pretty. You can't knock it too much.

    how do i get dlss frame gen to work? I have a rtx4080 and the frame gen option does not work in this game for me for some reason. the frame gen option is a faded color and does not let me activate it or unactivate it, pressing on it does nothing and I've tried changing all in game settings and still nothing. is there something I have to do in the NVidia settings? also I have updated all the rtx drivers that were in the GeForce app.

      it says I already have latest driver and I did try changing to exclusive screen mode but still didn't give me choose to put frame gen on. but I'll try again with exclusive screen mode. thanks@@eTeknix

      thanks mate but yeah i figured it out now. I had to click on start bar and then settings, then gaming, then graphic settings, then I turned on hardware accelerated gpu scheduling. after that it gave me the option to use or not use dlss frame gen@@obtains

    i have an i7 11700k and gigabyte rtx 4080 gaming oc (non super) i set this game to 1440p very high settings maxed but turn off motion blur, and without upscaling using dlaa I was getting about 95-111, and when using dlss quality I was getting anywhere between what I got without upscaling and all the way up to my fps lock of 141 fps all depending on where I was in game and what was happening on screen but most of the time more fps than what I was getting with no upscaling. with dlaa the graphics looked very good for things up close in front of the character, but I preferred dlss quality with sharpness on 3 or 4 because it seemed to look better and nicer overall, and it ran smooth and clearer it seemed for me. my i7 11700k temp can hit 61 degrees and utilize over 50% of the CPU at times and usually sits around the 57-60-degree mark, my gpu sits about 58 degrees. my 165hz 1440p monitor looks great with this game, I set the monitor to 10 bit and 144hz and I manually lock the fps in the NVidia control panel for this game to 141 fps and activate g sync, free sync and v sync.

      nice. I have also standard RTX 4080, but it is paired with i9-9900KS and 32GB DDR4-4000. In 4K, very high preset with DLSS (Quality) + Frame generation ON I am getting around 92 FPS for most of the time. But the CPU is bottlenecking the 4080 where the GPU usage is not going above 85% :D

      ok nice set up. my gpu doesn't bottle neck hardly any at all unless I'm using 1080p, but 1440p and 4k seem to be about on par in first person open world games. I think you would get better performance out of your gpu if you had at the very least a 10th gen intel or better or the amd equivalent maybe a 5600, 5700, 5800 etc. etc. but saying that i would prefer a i7 12700k or better i7 for these newer gpus because this will make running ray tracing effects and such smoother I would think@@EasternUNO

      @@EasternUNO I just bought a new tcl c845 55-inch 4k hdr mini led quantum dot 144hz tv and tried it out last night with horizon forbidden west for a bit and it was much more immersive than my smaller 32 inch monitor the way the sound and picture sounds and looks. the size makes it seem more realistic and the sound sounds much more immersive. I was getting the full 117 fps that I locked the fps to; it would drop from that occasionally, I was using dlss and frame gen. I don't know if the better immersion was because of the bigger nice-looking screen or if it was just the fact it is a new product, but even the sound was better out of my surround sound system as this tv has different effects that it adds, and you can turn each of them up or down to your liking. it would be good to be able to get a full 165 fps with hdr, high bit rate colors all turned up and on. i assume you would need higher than 165hz to do it and probably a 5090 so you are right in that regard. monitors seem to have more finer details than big TVs, but TVs are very immersive especially new TVs. so maybe a new tv is in order if you haven't got a 144hz 4k hdr tv yet, this tcl tv is apparently a popular budget gaming tv it has free sync and vrr.
