    Nice video. One note: DC power can be much more dangerous than AC due to how the shock affects you. DC shock will cause your muscles to tense, possibly on the source of the shock = prolonged electocution. Not really an issue with the demo you are using, but another good reason to get it installed by a pro.

    • @LDSreliance
      @LDSreliance  6 лет назад +1

      True. But in very low wattages like in this video that isn't going to happen.

    • @deej99
      @deej99 Год назад

      Wrong way around. AC is the dangerous one. Electric fences are DC and can run up to 70,000 volts but they won’t hurt you. The voltage throws you off the fence (AC grabs you) and the low amperage means it’s not harmful. Don’t play with AC!

    Thanks for teaching folks how to go about solar setups. The essentials are all in your video. I've bought a flexible 200watt 12volt solar panel to cover one of my bedroom windows it's charging a heavy 75Ah Agm battery. It is essentially the same in principle, just scaled up bigger. I hope other watchers learn and take notes. Oh, for learners, remember that once you have sun shining on the panel you have electricity. Be careful with metal things around the connections. The video above shows no metal things nearby.

    • @gboyspeed
      @gboyspeed 4 года назад

      Idk what battery capacity he using ,
      But we assume he using 7Ah @ 12v battery fully charged
      So total power
      7Ah x 12v = 84 Wh
      If you using 5v 2A
      2A X 5V = 10 W
      You drain battery to 0% you can use for about 8 hour

    thank you for the quick reply just let you know i live in Sri Lanka and my Air Conditioner is 12000BTU and in here we using 220volts. how do we calculte how much amps we need? in your reply u mentioned (5amp @ 115volts). in my case lets assume i need 1200W so will it be 5amps @ 220 volts.

    • @LDSreliance
      @LDSreliance  9 лет назад +3

      OK, that is good information. In Sri Lanka, the average number of hours of sun per day is just over 4.5 so we will use that in the calculations. Your 12,000 BTU air conditioner does use about 1200 watts like you said (about 5.6 amps or so @ 220v). So again if we run the air conditioner 6 hours per day and plan for 1 day of backup power in case it is cloudy you will need 5 of those batteries and 3400 watts of 12v solar panels.

    how would i be able to power things like a laptop or a fridge with solar panels completely off grid?
    would i want to run my panels into a charge controller and then to batteries and then from the charge controller to an inverter?

    • @LDSreliance
      @LDSreliance  7 лет назад +1

      Yes, exactly. But for those bigger loads you will probably need to run the inverter straight off the battery instead of the load output of the charge controller as that will be limited (usually 20A on most cheaper models).

    • @crisrose9707
      @crisrose9707 7 лет назад

      so i would run the solar panels into the charge controller then into the batteries and then from the batteries into the inverter which goes to outlets that i can plug anything into?

    • @kilwezaunene5610
      @kilwezaunene5610 7 лет назад

      Good question which has helped me answer a lot of questions in my head. From LD' s response, it is YES. However this will be unregulated by the controller whose limit is 20A for most. You may wish to introduce a higher rated fuse between the battery and the inverter (in the red wire (+)) in order to protect your equipment

  • @bunker551
    @bunker551 7 лет назад +3

      I don't understand your question. Sorry

    • @t3fLoN77
      @t3fLoN77 6 лет назад +2

      You would typically run the inverter directly from the battery itself. So the charge controller would be connected to and charge the battery and the inverter would also be connected to and draw directly from the battery. The capacity of your batter bank and inverter load should be sized properly.

    • @halisiddiqui665
      @halisiddiqui665 6 лет назад +1

      I guess in battery system simply connect the load wires with inverter but all the power maths of the load need to be calculated prior.

    • @SojournerNX
      @SojournerNX 6 лет назад +1

      Yes, the power inverter will connect directly to the battery. You see, a solar charge controller's main function is to regulate the charge going into a battery, to prevent overcharging or undercharging. They typically have 3 "ports" - one for the solar panel, one for the battery and one for a load. I don't like using the load feature on a charge controller because it is limited in the amount of amps it can deliver. However, connecting a power inverter directly to the battery will give you all the amps you need without losing current.
      Just be sure to correctly fuse any power/hot wire (i.e., anything connected to the red terminal). You can properly determine safe fusing by looking at your wire rating. Every wire has a temperature limitation based on its gauge (or thickness). There is a chart online that I found several years ago that listed the amount of amperage that is flowing through a wire based on its gauge and maximum temperature. So basically, as an example only, if a 0 gauge wire has a limitation of 195° and at that temperature there is 250 amps being produced, I would fuse that wire at 250 amps. This would blow the fuse instead of overheating the wire beyond its rated temp which is a potential fire hazard in the event of a short. For safety, always fuse based on gauge AND wire temp. If you need more current, you need bigger wire or you need to up the voltage from a 12 volt system to 24 or even 48 volts. Higher voltages allow you to use smaller gauge wire.

    Food for thought: a lot of electronics actually doesn't need more than 12V (e.g. computers), their power supply actually converts voltage to 5, 3.3 V. You will need a different power supply, sure, but you won't loose energy during conversion

    • @LDSreliance
      @LDSreliance  2 года назад +2

      Yes, that is true. If you can find a DC to DC converter for your favorite electronics instead of using the AC adapters that come with them you will be much more efficient.

    Wow. Just what I was looking for. Before watching your video I was clueless. I just purchased a 12v Endless Breeze RV type fan for my greenhouse to try to lower the temperature and was researching on how to rig it up. I have seen in run on 30 watts solar panel here on youtube but it wasn't hooked up to a battery so now I know how to do that. I do need to find out how to hook it up to a thermostat so that it only comes on when the temperature gets up to 90 degrees. Thanks for your tutorial!

    • @LDSreliance
      @LDSreliance  8 лет назад

      +eyesalooking You are welcome. Glad it helped!
      To wire in your thermostat, just wire it in series with the positive (red) cable going to your fan. In other words, run a red wire from your charge controller to one side of the thermostat and then another red wire from the other side of the thermostat to the fan. The black wire just goes straight from the charge controller to the fan. All the thermostat does is flip a switch and break the connection when the temperature is less than 90 degrees. When it gets over 90 degrees the switch closes back up and the connection resumes and powers the fan.

    Thank ULDS reliance for responding so promptly I really appreciate it. I did just put two new batteries in the system. I think the problem is is the controller. It’s built-in to the two panels I think it might be considered a trickle system and now after talking to you about this I’m pretty sure that’s what the issue is. I think. The panels are producing 20 V before it goes into the controller. After it comes out of the controller I’m only showing 3 V on my voltmeter.

    • @LDSreliance
      @LDSreliance  6 лет назад

      Have you put the controller under a load? It may not show an accurate voltage until it is producing power for a load. Try connecting it to a battery and then test the voltage.

    It's a very good observation, the diode's rectifier is actualy the most important thing you need to now wen converthing AC to DC and controlling the generation and flow of electrical currents from 127 Volt's to 15 DC and vice versa. I actually learned the trick in a lab from a 87 year old teacher that wered a bow tie insted of a regular tie and a dude that drove the truck's and operated the montacargas (the machines that lift very hevy things from one place to anoter) and was more beach wale alfamale than man they all made fun of them both, including me the 1rst day of school, nothing ever worked that I build, but gona try to build a solar charger for my mini my pot caus im hitting the road in serch of adventure, and you now that means no electric outputs as far as you can see. Thank's for the beginer demo, going in to the frey as a profetional señior electromecanical tecnician with 0% work experienece, but if I buid my own mypod solar charger I can do anithing.
