I've found most genuine tough men are soft spoken, polite and real gentlemen. These days it's all bravado and yelling, these old genuine fighting men didn't need to bluff anyone
This is a revelation, I read Bartley's book 'King Of The Gypsy's' some years ago and never knew there was footage of him. I must say now that the book has descriptions of fights where there is no mercy given , and none expected, he was of his breed, all power to you...Bartley Gorman, King Of The Gypsy's
Bartley Gorman. I read this mans auto biography, what a true warrior and a gentleman. His book helped me to understand the Gypsy way of life and made me change my preconcieved ideas about traveling people.I hope that one day there is a film made about him. What a film it would be too . May he also rest in peace.
My Grandmother, Isabelle Gorman, was the daughter of Patrick Gorman and Marianne Morrison. They lived in London for a time. Isabelle ended up moving to the US. Isabelle also has a brother named Bartley. The Gorman family is the only family I've come across that uses the Bartley name. Does anybody have a family tree on the Gormans?
I have watched this film so many times and I can only wish other films about us were made like this. No divvy voiceover pretending the maker knows it all, just a lovely dignified bit of film about a true legend and his family that shows why Gypsy and Travelling people will always hang on to what they've got. If everything else was took away from me I would still have my pride. If the gorja media doesn't want to understand that who cares, we all only walk this earth for a while, Gypsy or not.
omg i can't believe i just found this. I remember the funeral we were on our way home from school and it was a few cars in front. He knew my granded. R.I.P Bartley x
notice how much respect bartley gets and how little joyce gets in his youtube videos. i think it goes to show you that a champion or King of the Gypsies is about alot more than punching prowess. I have the utmost respect for bare-knuckle boxing and think that in Traveller culture it is their "national sport" I think we'd all do better to have some of the honor, strength and tenacity that bare-knuckle fighting takes.
Bartley Gorman's reign from 1972-1997 is arguably the longest reign of any champion in any sport. By far my favorite among the bareknucklers. I have him and Paddy Monaghan tied, followed by unlicensed kings Waldron and Shaw. Remarkable man, wonderful human being. R.I.P. champion of champions.
for such an amazing video, why when i look to the related videos do i see all these fighting videos this belongs with the documentaries. as one of the best if not the best documentaries on youtube.
Well put together video. I enjoyed it, not least the singing. I don't know why, but I was surprised to discover, near the back end, that it was Bartley himself! Dare I say it was hauntingly beautiful.
I was only young I think about 10 and my dad and his best mate were mates with Bartley. I will never forget meeting such a nice older man and so well respected I look at it as a learning curve in my life , thank you
A true gentleman till the end. god bless your familly bartley, may you rest well. If anyone is looking for a read, his book comes highly recomended. A great insight into a great man.
The real example of a true man modest doesnt whine about his troubles he says his back is broad enough to baer it he can take pain physicaly and in his heart a great man RIP
This is the full documentary. Shane Meadows plans to make a feature length film about Bartley's life at some point in the future. The plan is that Paddy Considine will play Bartley! He'll be getting pumped up for that one!
If he did not make it as a fighter he could sure have made it as a singer !! I have done boxing and martial arts and have met some big hard men , one thing in common is that there all gentlemen like Mr Gorman. Real hardmen are not bullys or troublemakers.
FROM WIKIPEDIA:...He won the Bareknuckle Champion of Great Britain & Ireland, often called the King of the Gypsies, aged 28 in 1972.[citation needed] A fierce fighter, he stood 6 ft 1 in and weighed in at 15½ stone (217 lbs). He held the title until deciding not to defend it in 1992. During these glory years, he fought many fights, and even challenged infamous London brawlers Lenny "The Guv'nor" McLean and Roy "Pretty Boy" Shaw.
My Grandmother, Isabelle was a traveller here in the USA. I do alot of genealogy research and it's very difficult to find info (census etc) on this part of my family. I truly believe she is related to Bartley Gorman. The resemblance is uncanny.
I think this is clearly where Shane and Paddy (Considine) got the influence for Morell's voice in A Room for Romeo Brass. Incredibly hard to imitate, love the accent! Love this documentary too
Bartley rest in peice im goin to visit your grave next week and il put a flower down for you!wish i could of met you very honourable and tough man respect.
Yeah, Paddy based his voice in Romeo Brass on this guy too! Paddy did a photography course at college and Bartley was one of his subjects for photography.
Oh. By the way, NIghts. I was wondering, when he was mentioning the branches of his family, or tribes, as he suggested, he mentioned the Fury's. Now, I know Manchester boxer Tyson Fury is a Gypsy, his father was a well known Gypsy fighter. Do you know if you/Bartley are related to that line of Manchester Fury's? He's I believe, from Middleton.
Can anyone please tell me, is this the full documentary? I was always of the impression that it was full, feature film type length but I suppose it could be a short, 10 min thingy. Would appreciate it if anyone could tell me. P.s. Got to love Bart's accent. Anyone who has seen Meadows later film, "Room for Romeo Brass", Paddy Considine has based his character "Morell's" voice on our King, here.
Ah rite, ok!! Thanks for clearing that up. Well still, the prospect is still extremely interesting. I'm sure Shane and Paddy will put up good competition to make 'Snatch' look like a pantomime. I hope it's in the same style as 'Three Tears for Jimmy Prophet'.
Bartley's final speach strangely echoes Shakespeare's sonnet 138; All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts
Nice guy a true gent. I read all the comments and great to see how well repected the guy was and for the ones posting the shit comment's would have loved to see you say it to the man's face. Lap top hard men.
Are you defo correct there, Byrnsie? You're obviously Irish or of Irish heritage with a name like Byrne, so I think I'll believe you, mate. I'm glad you told us anyway, it's a beautiful folk song! I'm gonna try and get hold of it. Cheers, B!
paddy considine's character morell from shane meadows film a room for romeo brass is obviously modeled on bartley, his accent and mannerisms are spot on
@BlueCrayon77 oh ryt i see sorry thought it was longer, wish it was longer i like these documentarys just watched knuckle last nyt do u no any other gd gypsy boxing films or documentarys? cheers
Think its more to do with the contrast in voice - this dudes not just a boxer, hes a bare knuckle gypsy boxer and thats the darkest of the lot but hes still this literate soft spoken dude its almost scarier having that complete contrast for the first twenty minutes of that new batman film i thought he was havin a laugh with this well spoken voice he had but it gets creepier effective
I was lucky enough to have known Bartley and his brother Sam when i was a young boy growing uo in Hinckley Leicestershire, they were friends of my dad and they would all drink at the Hollywell pub on London rd in the 70s and have a sing son.If i remember right,Sam played guitar.
tyson fury is part of this mans breed so hes gonna go far!
Fantastic little short film. Big respect to both Shane Meadows & Bartley Gorman.
10/10
I've found most genuine tough men are soft spoken, polite and real gentlemen. These days it's all bravado and yelling, these old genuine fighting men didn't need to bluff anyone
I love Shane Meadows films, they have this special thing... cheers for the upload!!!

Im no gypsy but I love to see a man who loves his people. R.I.P. King of the Gypsies
Good God! The speed and power of that left jab.Combined with charm and a great singing voice, long live his memory
what a lovely singer
This is the whole documentary.
Shane Meadows plans to make a bio-pic film of Bartley Gorman's life, but production hasn't even started on it yet.
Anyone who inspires Bane deserves to get a key to the city. For such astounding strength and resilience, he's quite humble
What an interesting documentary! An insight into the bare-knuckle boxing world!!
I can't wait to see the feature length documentary!

This is fantastic!
Now I know exactly where Paddy C got his accent from in Room for Romeo Brass!
omg i can't believe i just found this. I remember the funeral we were on our way home from school and it was a few cars in front. He knew my granded. R.I.P Bartley x
i had the pleasure of meeting bartley gorman once, and i can truthfully say he was a 100% gentleman

... an amazing man. He was 'real'... which is rare to find now-a-days.
haha 'bartley gorman 4th wasn't a fighter, he was a great lover!' hahah fair play, best way to be!
Bright, articulate, honest....and a fine singer....what a character..
had the pleasure of meeting him about 15 or 16 years ago, a true gentleman.
I was only young I think about 10 and my dad and his best mate were mates with Bartley. I will never forget meeting such a nice older man and so well respected
I look at it as a learning curve in my life , thank you
Great video, thank you for posting it.
Only somebody who's been through great pain can sing like that.
a good man !!! never ran his mouth a true traveller through & through! god bless him!
"A man can have pain in his ass, as well as his body, through fighting."
Now that's a great quote.
Something very special died the day Bartley Gorman passed on.
an intelligent, wise and artistic man. just goes to show that you can't judge someone by your own perceptions.
Great book & seemed a fair gent. Still waiting for Shane to do the film Bio about Bartley!
Nice film, thank you.
I salute this man! he is a man of honour and that is rare!! peace be with you sir!!
love his singing voice!
R.I.P. Big man.I grew up not too far from uttoxeter, so Bartley was a local legend, always remebered.
A gentleman with a fighters spirit, a rare breed.
What a humble man. Respect.
Read his book.' Bartley Gorman:King Of The Gypsies' . It explains all the scraps & scrapes he got into. Awesome book.
Am reading the book right now - can't wait for the Full Length movie
He has a lovely voice , he seems like a very nice fella. More people should live to a code like this.
A true gentleman till the end. god bless your familly bartley, may you rest well. If anyone is looking for a read, his book comes highly recomended. A great insight into a great man.

If he did not make it as a fighter he could sure have made it as a singer !! I have done boxing and martial arts and have met some big hard men , one thing in common is that there all gentlemen like Mr Gorman. Real hardmen are not bullys or troublemakers.
He spoke some wise words there '...I don't want no pity off anyone...my back is broad enough to bear it...'
What a Gentleman this Guy is,
respect to Him and his Family
FROM WIKIPEDIA:...He won the Bareknuckle Champion of Great Britain & Ireland, often called the King of the Gypsies, aged 28 in 1972.[citation needed] A fierce fighter, he stood 6 ft 1 in and weighed in at 15½ stone (217 lbs). During these glory years, he fought many fights, and even challenged infamous London brawlers Lenny "The Guv'nor" McLean and Roy "Pretty Boy" Shaw.
He was 6'1 and weighed in his prime 15 and a half stone. (I got this from his book King of the Gypsies)
Fights like a demon but sings like an angel! A true Gentleman is Gorman!
My Grandmother, Isabelle was a traveller here in the USA. I do alot of genealogy research and it's very difficult to find info (census etc) on this part of my family. I truly believe she is related to Bartley Gorman. The resemblance is uncanny.
