Hacksaw Ridge is a 2016 biographical war film directed by Mel Gibson and written by Andrew Knight and Robert Schenkkan, based on the 2004 documentary The Conscientious Objector. The film focuses on the World War II experiences of Desmond Doss, an American pacifist combat medic who, as a Seventh-day Adventist Christian, refused to carry or use a weapon or firearm of any kind. Doss became the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor, for service above and beyond the call of duty during the Battle of Okinawa. Andrew Garfield stars as Doss, with Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer, Hugo Weaving, Rachel Griffiths, and Vince Vaughn in supporting roles.

“Ah are you gonna go into the medical field, that’s tight” she says about Desmond Doss. One of the greatest medics ever lol
I read this as she said it in the movie! So trippy
You can't prove this! Movie's are fact.
Hugo Weaving doesnt get the praise he should for this movie. He REALLY portrayed a veterans reactions well.
For noting, Desmond's father was awarded the Silver Star in WW1 for valor (and was awarded the Croix de Guerre, the French medal for valorous conduct). The movie dramatises his father somewhat, and I'm sure he had his issues, but the man was a hero in one of the most terrible wars.
Agreed. He's angry at hal at the dinner table when he's spouting that rah rah sh*t they tell us young suckers to get us to join
Sadly you are very right
@@saviourself687 The balls you must have to hint that someone can't be a hero and have severe PTSD.
Speaking as an Airboorn Infantry medic Desmond Doss was a hero to us. Thank you for this.
Speaking as a Greenside Navy Corpsman, I concur.
Desmond Doss was FIRST to do unarmed service in US military , it was his court case that gave men right to serve without a gun .
3 purple hearts and several bronze stars and medal of honor , for never shooting a single enemy .
As National Guard infantry I agree!
He should be a hero to everyone who knows first aid, especially medics
Absolutely
Most people don't understand what Desmond's father went through. His father fought in WW1 at Belleau Wood. One of the bloodiest battles in the war. A large part of it was hand to hand combat. So his father's PTSD scares are big and deep.
''How long have you been dead son?'' I laughed so hard at that line, because i knew straight away what he meant hahaha. It's hard not to laugh when Vince Vaughn appears in a movie, because most movies he's in is a comedy of some sort. But he fucking NAILED his character in this movie.
This movie is an artpiece. There's a lot of war movies out there, but this one's up there with Saving Private Ryan for sure (atleast imo).
There’s a monument to Doss in the small town I live in. He lived in retirement close to where I’m at. I’m very proud a movie was made to memorialize his life. His biography the movie was based on is incredible.
If you don't mind my asking, what town is that? I grew up in California, and in middle school I wrote a book report on Doss. Even at that young age, I could see that his bravery was remarkable.
@@Anon54387 the memorial park is in Collegedale,Tn just northeast of Chattanooga. He raised his family near Fort Oglethorpe,Ga which is just south of Chattanooga.
Imho Andrew Garfield is one of the best actors of our time and def deserved an oscar for this role.
Saw that movie day one in theater.. When the lights came back on, I turned to the old man that was two seats from me.. He was in tears.
The movie already broked me, but this was too much
Hi from the UK.
My dad told me he was going to volunteer at the outbreak of WW2 but, his dad who had come through WW1, told him not to volunteer because the Army would come for him soon enough.
His older brother was regularly Army and based in India at the time. My dad was eventually called up in 1940, he did his basic training and then went on to be trained as a radar operator. He spent his 20th birthday on a troopship off Durban on the South African coast. He thought he might end up in India with his brother but ended up posted to Singapore and a few months later in February of 1942 when Singapore fell to the Japanese, he became a P.O.W.
He worked on the death railway until he contracted malaria and was sent down to base camp where the medics led by an Australian surgeon saved his life, from there he was sent into Thailand with a mix of American, Australian, British, Dutch, and New Zealand, P.O.W.s, until the end of the war.
Right up until his death in 2006 he had nightmares and would break out into a cold sweat, sometimes he would even call out in his sleep. He never really talked about what he went through.
When he came back to the UK in late 1945 he was skin and bone, like many others he ended up in a tropical disease’s hospital and was not allowed a home visit until Christmas of 1946 and was not released home for good until March of 1947.
These P.O.W.s were officially known as Far East Prisoner Of War, but in truth along with all the UK men who fought in the Far East, they were the forgotten men, the forgotten Army, once the war in Europe was over the war in the Far East faded into the background. The UK government’s forget about these men and it wasn’t until the year 2000 that they finally got a payment of £10,000 as compensation, only 16,500 of which 4,500 were widows, got the payment, these were those that survived the camps, which is such a small number when you consider that 85,000 were made P.O.W.s when Singapore fell plus some 40,000 who had been captured in the fighting up until Singapore fell. A sad not often told truth about WW2, not sure if American P.O.W.s were treated any better by their government’s?
Just awful stuff, especially considering the patriotism many had to their country and their sacrifices for it. And yet still treated better than what POWs and sometimes even regular soldiers from the Soviet Union went through when they returned. They were mistrusted, actively rounded up and often imprisoned because they had been 'exposed' to western influence while POWs. Sickening.
Literal definition of "Not all heros wear capes"
or "No Hero carries a gun"
@@thedeep6570 Some do, but in this case…this hero didn’t. As to how firefighters, or paramedics don’t carry guns
@@thedeep6570 John Chapman Kyle Carpenter and Dakota Meyer would like to disagree
You know something? World Wars made men like the main character's father. I think his father was broken because the Army didn't know how would be all the survivors after wars, and he was trying to talk to him about the sequels of the war (like lossing his possible best friends, or coming back home without life in his eyes). You need to keep empathic for all those characters like him.
How bout don’t get mad and understand not everyone knows the same things you do.
22:01 I've actually been sobbing for 3 minutes over this
people should say that to each other more often
@@Diegesis Agreed. Hope I hear it someday
The irony if this movie is that they embellished a lot of his pre-war activities and the downplayed his actual combat heroism because they didn't think audiences would believe it. He gained the trust of his team in prior operations and won bronze stars for bravery. His actions after getting hit by the grenade are even more extreme. He threw himself off the stretcher (despite hbing 17 pieces of shrapnel in his body) to tend to another seriously wounded soldier and made them take that man out. He then got shot by a sniper, shattering his arm, and he fashioned a split and crawled 300 yards to safety.
Bro give Arianna a break and let her watch a normal romance movie! Shits starting to get ME sad watching her always sad 😂😂 That being said. 1917.
Let her watch Pearl Harbor the first half of that is a romance
@@MikeJones-qn1gz 🤮
Hugo Weaving is such a gifted actor.

"Sure ain't what I joined up for."
As a U.S. soldier I'm pretty sure every recruit has said this or thought this.
Doss actually saved many more, was in many more battles. And when he prayed, his attached units would win. One time he forgot to pray, and it went very bad! He was even put in for another CMH!
Thanks for reaction. Shout out to the 1/3.
1BDE
Shout out to all our combat medics/corpsman out there.
I literally just searched up if you did hacksaw ridge two days ago, and you just did it today. Idk if my prayers were answered.
I read the book about his story, and it catched me. Then i watched youtube videos about him. When word came out a movie would come about his story i cheered! And the movie didnt disappoint. Great movie! God watched over him and used him to save all those men.
War Horse, and The Patriot are my other 2 favorite war movies of all time.
I'm 70, but I have to tell you I love all you're responds to all the movies you watch, you're passionate, loving , caring, I look forward to you're next movie
Never been a Mel Gibson fan?!?!?!
He's one of the greatest actors of all time! Dear God the movies He's done! Oh no no no NO!
One of my Favorite movies hands down. The movie actually downplays what Private Doss did over there. Part 2 is going to be rough for sure. This movie always gets me choked up.
This is probably one of the only war movies where I cried, I cried at the end and I cried when Desmond was gonna get the court martial
I remember my dad telling me the story of him when I was about 12 years old. He fault and was wounded there, I didn't know names or details. Wish he could have seen the movie. Salute to my brother and sister veterans! Pray you are finding peace with the battle within and honor in the Oath that never dies.
Desmond doss is considered a superhero in our church. the man is a legend
Black hawk down and we were soldiers next and full metal jacket
The real story is stranger than fiction. That should say something about divine intervention.
One thing on my bucket list is to have a day and watch some good cinema with this wonderful soul. She embodies all emotions and really views movies for their intentions. It would be bliss to sit down and discuss cinema with her. Yep, that'll do it. Bucket list entry, indeed.
Hacksaw ridge in a nutshell.
What a cute love story :)
Wow a war court drama!
HOLY F*** ITS A MEL GIBSON WAR MOVIE
This poor woman's going to need therapy if she keeps watching these war movies.
Y’all should do Letters From Iwo Jima at some point for y’alls war series. A great film from the perspective of the Japanese.
Cool but the Japanese during WW2 were still in the wrong🤷♂️
Underrated gem.
@@damikey18 and? Lol I never said they weren’t. It’s just interesting to watch films from the other sides perspective. Their cause was wrong, but most of the people fighting the war were just the same. Scared young kids, being pushed to do something by a tyrannical government.

Watching your action you’re starting to understand and people think men live this wonderful privileged life this is what it is for us to be male.
yeah bc in the 21st century is SO hard to be a male… woman join the army to and u making this about gender is just wrong
This movie finally surpassed Enemy at the Gates as my favorite war movie of all time
When I first saw this film in theatres I rolled my eyes and groaned a little at how cheesy I thought the 'please god, just one more' lines were... then the sweet old man shows up in the end to make me feel like a right asshat!
@CitiZEN Cat if it's as real as gravity itself, how is its form/consistency a matter of opinion? Not much guesswork surrounding gravity these days.
@CitiZEN Cat nah man, gravity has several theoretical elements, that doesn't make it 'purely theoretical'. Gravity has a plethora of proofs; is calculable to the point of extreme functionality, allowing us to make giant hunks of metal fly or send objects into perpetual orbit. A vaguely posited connection between various subjective experiences as representing a grand universal vibration (or pulse) that constitutes a creative God seems more like a belief to me, not to bash it.
My dad had me when he was older. A true ww2 hero he fought the Japanese. Wounded shot through and through the spleen. I saw the wounds. He patched himself up on the battlefield with mud leaves strips of Tshirt and first aid bandages. Kept fighting until the battle was over then took himself to first aid. He said no way he was going to stay on the battlefield and wait for medics, but get picked up by the Japanese! He told me a few horror stories about Japanese inhuman treatment. He hated the Japanese for a very very long time.
I love your reactions. So down to earth and intelligent. Keep trucking’ on!
Arianna just a reminder for you to consider doing Platoon.
I think you would enjoy it.

For those who don't know, the Great War uniform worn by Hugo means WWI uniform. And no, WWII is not a sequel to WWI.
After seeing him in Spider-man then seeing him in this I got to say he is a really good actor.. for playing these type of rolls
Also Was there going to be a part 4 of BOB?
It comes out on sundays
@@Diegesis ohh ok my bad... lol just excited for it
Too much blur
Belleau wood? he might be a Marine.
You commented about watching a war movie around Christmas but I'd actually like to recommend one, joyous noel it's a movie about the Christmas truce in ww1 and it's criminally underrated
reacting to blur is so lit
While his convictions are by far admirable, and his coourage without question. There is the question of him beeing a medic without a PDW, to either protect himself AND his patient. He is a beacon for all to follow, but still
John 3;16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son(Yeshua) that whosoever believe on Him shall not perish but have eternal life. That is my prayer for you young lady from a Viet Nam Era Navy Vet 1966-1970
When you get to the credits, remember you said top 5 movie couples 😆
The Notebook+Saving Private Ryan= Hacksaw Ridge
Her eyes look like she’s a master in cry school for theatre 🎭
That actor was Kol Michaelson from The originals
Mel Gibson movies are great and extremely violent and beautiful. Usually based on real events or true stories. Passion of the Christ, Braveheart, Once we were Soldiers. Type in here, about maybe the greatest soldier of all time, Roy Benevides, the Lazarus Soldier! I met him once in the early 90s, when I was stationed at Bragg! Other good real events or true story movies are 13 hours, Lone Survivor, once we were Soldiers, Blackhawk Down,Fury, Dunkirk, Thin Red Line, Unbroken, 1917,, Big Red One, Hamburger Hill, American sniper, Saving Private Ryan.
Love your reaction movies!!! What’s with the blurred screen all the time? Like at random during the non graphic parts?
Copyrights
There is a similar story that was also made into a movie, I recommend it, it's called unbroken 2014
Please watch Backdraft with Kurt Russell, William Baldwin, and Donald Sutherland, absolutely amazing movie that gets forgotten a lot.
Word, excellent film.
I keep expecting to hear "Mr. Anderson"....!
the fact that this is a real life story is insane
There's a moment in this that I think people kind of miss and there's a lot of moments in this that people get but there's one I think people miss a lot when doss's father is asking to speak to that high-ranking man when he said to that woman the battle he had been through with that man he immediately got her respect and then her attention if you look it up that was one hell of a battle and I don't know what else to say about that
We Were Soldiers
Amazing movie! I would suggest to react to "The Unknown Soldier" 2017 its based finnish-soviet war in WW2. It show how desperate fight finns but to keep own indepedence also its expensivest movie ever produced in finland.
This movie will get you ready for the Pacific series
This is a amazing movie if u can watch on 4K. Its a true story. Amazing!!
Снова моя девочка с реакцией на классный фильм❤. Обожаю твои искренние эмоции🌹
That’s what my three War Veteran, lifer Marine Dad used to say. He was never wrong. It must be My malfunction.
Me realizing Desmond is the original spider man
Love your reaction vids. Did you consider "Thin Red Line", too? Great movie on par with Provate Ryan just in the pacific theatre.
When he knows medicine he knows how to make makeshift tourniquet’s
There isn't a single person who became a Desmond by today. Every person serving today isn't a Desmon Doss today.
Love this reaction! Keep up the good work! It’s awesome to see a fellow Coloradian
Hell yeah! Representing Boulder here!

Great reaction thumbs up
She making another movie so much movie 😮
This girl is how other girls wished they looked in a beanie..she is so effin cute 😍
Great reaction to a very good movie - I personally find this movie underrated.
Im assuming the blurring is for copyright? Really bums me out cuz id like to be able to see it all
me too
You should watch Glory for February.
You have such heart like a leader I wish people would have heart like you do. Are you going to do a reaction to the movie Glory? with Denzel and Morgan Freeman, it has Matthew Broderick in it also.
I enjoy watching movies with this girl while I play the guitar,, I wish my girl was like this …damn..
Miss her reactions

Is there some pattern or reasoning to the blur? If so I'm not seeing it. Not trying to be contentious or toxic if there's some channel or copyright rules going on.
What are your five most favorite movie couples, Arianna?
Needles are not so bad, but giving blood feels weird.
Interesting that his father mentioned he served at Belleau Wood. It was some of the most deadly fighting in WWI. The Battle of Belleau Wood is known as kind of the epochal moment for the Marine Corps. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Belleau_Wood
I say this only as the highest of compliments: You appear as something of a tomboy, and that is awesome; but when the girl in you comes out watching the romantic scenes, that's the awesomerest. (Yes, that's a word, because I just made it up.) Rock on. I enjoy your channel.
Watch Return to Me! WW2 hallmark movie starring Betty White
Why does it keep blurring, I don't understand it
The censoring gave me second hand astigmatism, and I already have astigmatism too.
Just found your channel from the BOB reacts. I’m a fan! Can I ask why in this vid, the movie goes blurry every couple seconds?
I've been testing ways to get around copyright forever. Nearly no two videos are edited the same. Some day I'll figure out how to maximize the viewing experience while minimizing the getting blocked risk
but why does it keep getting blurred out
I love your reaction
Has she done American sniper next? If not I feel like that should be the next one.
Why is every other clip blurry?
If she blurring the blood the we only going to see 1/5 of the movie
Our saving private ryan video got age restriction for gore. Hopefully you've already seen the movie before watching the reaction.
I belive they need to show these accurate movies and shows to kids in highschool, because so many people have never heard of these wars and what Hitler did
Man, this movie is one of the more accurate depictions of warfare. Not my experience because war has gotten a little less... severe.
The only two things I didn't like was that they never mentioned the other two campaigns his unit was a part of, and they made it seem like that the only leaders in a company of over 120 men was a captain and 1 sergeant.
deleted scenes needed to be kept
Please react to we were soldiers
nahhhh you need to watch lone survivor man i promise it will be worth it
Why? That's a really inaccurate movie.
You can pretty much expect this type of brutally from any good war movie
