The Terminator is a 1984 American science fiction action film directed by James Cameron. It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, a cyborg assassin sent back in time from 2029 to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), whose unborn son will one day save mankind from extinction by a hostile artificial intelligence in a post-apocalyptic future. Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn) is a soldier sent back in time to protect Sarah. The screenplay is credited to Cameron and producer Gale Anne Hurd. Co-writer William Wisher Jr. received a credit for additional dialogue.

The deleted scene of Kyle Reese in a meadow having an emotional breakdown because he couldn't handle the beauty of the pre-apocalpyse world... it wrecks the pacing but man I love that scene.

Honestly, I hate it.
One of my favorite parts is Kyle saying he always wondered what she was thinking about in the picture of Sarah. When the picture was taken she was thinking of Kyle.
That's lost on someone who basically says " leave your man behind to save yourself girl..." three times when watching the movie : says a lot about a person.
How could she be thinking about him if she didn't even meet him in the timeline the picture was taken. How could John be his son in the future from a past that never happened.
@@SirKolass Terminator seems to imply there is only one timeline. Everything that happened always happened, because if Kyle had never gone back, there would have been no John. It's a closed loop.
@@atraxisdarkstar it does make you wonder who the very first John was that caused the loop to begin with by beating skynet.
@@SeraphSeph There is no "first" John. There's just John. This is something people get confused about in this movie's version of time (same thing for Interstellar when people wonder who put the gate there).
The original Kyle Reese is one of the most underrated heros. He's just a guy, but he gives everything facing something that's almost immortal.
The first terminator is just terrifying. The tone, score, the lighting and the absence of unnecessary jokes. The 2nd is slightly more lighthearted but it's kept at a minimum and it serves the purpose of John bonding with the terminator. They are just 2 masterpieces. They don't do them like this anymore
Endlessly rewatchable
As someone that grew up to all these 80s and 90s movies. They were so gritty and didn't pull any punches. This one compared to the second movie was far more gritty. The Police Station scene alone says it all.
The reason the terminator was not moving fast in the chase after its flesh was burned off, was that its leg was damaged. It was limping, if you noticed it.
Yeah its surprising how many people think its because it loses its flesh rather than because it was run over by a fuel tanker.
While it no doubt loses some speed because the metal 'feet' aren't ideal to walk on by themselves and it rather relies on the flesh feet for proper mobility, most of it is indeed the Terminator's already damaged - As said you quite clearly see it limping earlier when it goes to get in the truck.
@@stang5755 terminator 2, the arcade game depicted t-800 endoskeletons being able to run as fast as speeding cars, which would've been terrifying. :(
@@stang5755 You can also see some metal parts sticking out of place on its damaged leg when the endoskeleton is seen for the first time. The shot from the back where the limping leg is shown in a close-up shows what would be the Achilles heel for a human, clearly broken off.
@@STEJTHEGREATEST Wow, nice info. Would make sense, but also terrifying for sure.
I just love how well this movie captures the fear of having a killer stalk you. The tension she feels in a crowd. Her constantly looking over her shoulder for anyone slightly suspicious. Trying to rely on others to fix it for her and keep her safe. It feels like a nightmare she can't wake up from. It's absolutely brilliant.
When this movie first came out, nobody had ever seen anything like it. It was revolutionary. And then the sequel improved on it in every single way possible.
And it was basically an Indie film on a shoestring budget. $6.8 Million was peanuts compared to what James wanted to do. But a great cast, sharp cinematography, and a good script made it all work. And I honestly believe that the true mark of a good actor is "can they pull off being a Terminator". Arnie had to utterly stop any and all human reactions and reflexes to sell his character and he did it flawlessly. Robert Patrick pulled it off as well when he portrayed the T-1000 in Terminator 2 (he was so dedicated to the role that he ran 15 miles per day so he could do the foot chases without losing his stoic expression or visibly breathing hard in one take for each scene).
They spent SO much money on the 2nd movie. They had to basically invent new tech for visual effects.
The first one is way better than the second one
@@julenmarcossantamaria2762 100% agree.
@TheKrensada Holy cow! What are the chances I see you here! LMAO
T2 is one of the best sequels ever. Put it on your schedule. Just throwing that out there.
The only sad thing about it back then was that the TV trailers spoiled the main plot. Well, that and the Boorn to be wild song in the biker bar scene.
The song is Bad to the Bone, George Thorogood and the Destroyers
@@ozymandias1758 OK, my mistake.
@@jasontodd8296 Yeah, and you're definitely NOT spoiling it here, lol. Don't complain about something and then do it yourself.
@@Ripcraze Lol, I'm not. I saw T2 as a kid, long before I saw T1, and I kind of didn't know that Arnie was the bad guy before. And if by this point you didn't know T2's plot... your issue.
The Terminator is like a Student Loans Officer, it can't be bargained with, it can't be reasoned with, it doesn't feel pity or remorse or fear, and it absolutely will not stop... EVER, untill you have totally re-paid your student loans! RE-PAY them!
Naw, you mean insurance companies. I got a butt-load of deferments on my student loans until I got a job and paid them off, boi!
Well done!
Trade schools are where it's at!. College degree(s) and an office job is post WWII baby boom propaganda.
This comment is gold :D
I'd say the same thing about tax collectors. And just to spread a little seed I wanna say, Taxation, quite frankly, is Theft.
"Oh, I think it's Reese. He went elbow, and not fist first." That one line from you made me a subscriber. I watch plenty of reaction videos, especially those of one one of my favorite all time movies.... but I rarely see what you demonstrated. The ability to observe the subtle, and go from there. I hope if the apocalypse happens, we cross paths. You have what I seek in a partner. Bonus points... every chance Sarah had to abandon Reese, you encouraged... Pragmatic is good.
Fun fact: on the DVD/BluRay features there's deleted scenes that included an entire cut subplot of Sarah trying to convince Reese to outright change the future by tracking down Cyberdyne and destroying them before they could ever become a major player with defense contracts.
And there was a longer shot after the ambulance door shut that panned up and showed that the factory the final fight took place in _was_ Cyberdyne.
I take it thats where they got the idea for the 2nd movie
I have an extended cut that has all of the scenes added in to the movie as a whole. Maybe I will upload it to youtube.

My favourite part, and a sad fact, it´s when Kyle said that he always wondered what Sarah was thinking at that moment of the picture. And she was thinking of Kyle during that tape record. Lovers across time....
The actress who played Ginger is Bess Motta who was an instructor on the iconic 80’s aerobic exercise show “The 20 Minute Workout.” She was an 80’s icon, from an iconic 80’s TV show in an iconic 80’s movie. 😄
When I was a teenager my sister and I used to do the 20 minute workout. My dad would get mad cause he said we shook the tv. The 80s were a funny time. Also I saw Bess in Friday the 13th part 4.
"Sniff...sob...Ginger!"
@@julienielsen4462
In the 70's and 80's, the shaking of electronic devices, especially when used in conjunction with expletive incantations, was widely known to have magically influential powers, either good or bad, over their performance.
Your father was obviously wise and a true man of his times.
Watch Terminator 2 & Commando after this. Both Arnold Schwarzenegger movies you enjoy.
& Predator
Also, The Running Man & Total Recall
And Conan
I can't believe Arianna has NEVER seen the OG Terminator. What a wild ride.
I believe she has seen it. She knew Sarah's son's name is John before anyone said it
@D Z also, at the end she told Sarah to ‘push that button’ before Sarah had gone through the metal press.
@@DZ-te2zt Uh, she said it literally right after Reese says it.
@@stang5755 uh Reese says Conner. He doesn't say John
@@DZ-te2zt I hope you're not really that dense.
He says "His name is Connor. John Connor." in the film. That they didn't include the audio of him actually saying 'John Connor' right after just 'Connor' in this here edit of the video for RUclips doesn't change that. There's even a glimpse of 'John Connor' in the subtitles immediately right after he says 'Connor' in this video (15:09/15:10 - blink and you'll miss it). In any case Arianna mentions 'John' only after that in the video.
If this is indeed a non-genuine 'first time watching' reaction afraid you're gonna have to do a lot better at trying to argue that assumption than one mention that isn't even out of place. Same for the other guy talking about Arianna mentioning hitting the press button before Sarah goes through the press when in the film itself Sarah accidentally bumps that press button well before then and again this edit just doesn't show that piece of the movie.
Kyle said he had always wondered what Sarah was thinking about when that picture was taken, because she looked sad. It turned out that she was thinking of Kyle. Aw! 🥰
Terminator was a film ahead of its time and though the special effects of the day were not as good as now, some of the misdirection was so good you never notice it. - It also has what is probably the best sequel in the History of movies (You gotta try it sometime - PLEEEAASE!!!)
Great video review here!
Agreed. That is also the reason why classics like this stay classic. And why all but T2, the other sequel movies don't measure up. The effects were on par for those times, but because of a limited budget, the story, acting, and practical effects had to be on point, or as much as possible. Today, all we have is special effects, which aren't special anymore since everyone is doing them. But proper casting, acting, story, and sequences are thrown under the bus. And of course, trying to recapture the genie in the bottle again by rehashing the same story again instead of trying to do something original. T2 ended it perfectly, yet they won't let it rest.
Yep. The big three sequels, Aliens. Terminator 2, Godfather 2 (and Star Trek TNG).
@@onegoodthought6581 Add Star Wars and a couple of other franchises in that as well.
Bull honky. The effects in this movie are at least on par with the low quality garbage being churned out by giant studios today
One of my nephews is named after Reese. My family are big sci-fi fans.
When I first saw this in 1984, the friend I saw it with said he really liked how the attempt to change the future was what actually caused that future (i.e. the conception and birth of John Connor to a Sarah Connor who was prepared to raise John to be the leader of the human resistance) such that time travel didn't create a causality paradox.
The two ways time travel I think can be done effectively are the closed loop like Terminator, and the many-worlds style in Timeline (where there are infinite parallel worlds, so while you can't "go back" to your past, you can go to another world where everything is like ours, but it is in an earlier year).
I always thought it was a nice touch that he wondered what she was thinking about in the picture and she was thinking about him.
"If big hair was still in, I could rock that so hard."
Who cares if it's in or not. Rock it anyway. Make it become in.
Yeah, rock the salad!

@@rebeccabailey527 Not everyone.
That picture of Sarah that Reese held close and would look at was taken by the kid when Sarah was thinking of Reese.
I always loved the small detail of the truck dragging the terminator broke it's leg & the show a close up of the endoskeleton to confirm the damage to explain the obvious limp is not a design flaw but damaged.
I always liked that the big guy with a beard on the phone says,
"Hey man, you got a serious attitude problem"
Like he wasn't just on the phone to someone saying,
"I don't care what you're doing, come and get me"
Yeah, it's the killer robot with an attitude problem 😅
(Edit: spelling 🙄)
The weird thing I always found about that scene was, it ends so abruptly. The Terminator looks through the phone book. There must have been a confrontation between him and that big dude, most likely ending with the guy getting beaten to death or just shot.
For some reason, that always jumped out at me whenever I watch this movie.
I thought that was HIllbilly Jim but according to IMDB it as a person called John Bristol and that was his last credit. I think we all know what happened to him.
Don't get me wrong, I really do love T2, but I think I really like the first one more. With all the extra money the second one got it just looks too pretty, I really appreciate the gritty look the first one has.
I go back and forth on that, but one thing is for sure, they are a helluva great pair of movies.
When I was a kid, T2 was my favourite.
But as an adult I love the desperate circumstances of this one. It's just soooo tense.
@@rayjaymor8754 It's like Alien and Aliens, the sequels were iconic, the originals were small, dark and tense.
Ariana is absolutely someone I could hang with for movies. Love these reactions. Looking forward to the sequel!
That was a good reaction! I've watched this 50 times with reactors. Some think they're funny and make jokes, some think they're smarter than the director, and some explain the movie as if we can't follow it. But you did a nice reaction. You were surprised and shocked, and you noticed the cavalier attitude of the know-it-all psychologist. Really enjoyed you! Great job.
Eh, I'm kinda willing to cut Silverman some slack here. He looks like he's been on call for hours and it's really late. Heck, even as he leaves the police station he gets called again.
“Now is the time to be driving erratically” a few moments later…Sarah flips the truck! 😂😂😂 love your reactions!
I saw Terminator when I was 17 (1984) after graduating High School. Wow - I'd love to experience watching it again for the first time!
OJ Simpson was considered to play the Terminator but James Cameron changed his mind saying, "He's too much of a nice guy to play the role of a ruthless killer." 10 years later, look what happened to his wife and her friend Ron Goldman.😳😱🤦
@@Tek-Knight5592 Yes, he was. And Arnold originally read for Kyle Reese.
The original thought was that as an infiltrator, the Terminator had to be able to walk into a crowd and disappear.
There was also a cut sub-plot about the Terminator having to eat to keep its organic components alive.
@@gthewolf7948 You are boring. Not even a good troll.
27:28 that’s so terrifying how it’s pretending to be dead and then looks right at Sarah 😱
The part where The terminator shooting and he was covered in darkness where his eyes glowed as he was shooting… That was intense
Sadly you can't out run a terminator even with the skin off, it was only walking like that because its leg was damaged
"Still not sure who's the bad guy yet" .... right. One guy tore the heart out of the chest of another because he didn't want to hand over his clothes. Seems reasonable! xD
Hopefully, Terminator 2 is coming soon. It’s a weird case of a sequel being better than the original.
Not unlike James Cameron's other magnum opus, "Aliens" (1986).
She's seen it already apparently.
It’s an unpopular opinion but I like the first one better 😬
@@Nic-ye2yz Same..i prefer the darker tone.
@@DirtMaguirk Definitely why I like it more (and the 80's music and synthwave). I liked the horror/love story subtheme as well. T2 is still amazing but I believe so many people like it more than the first only because it's newer and had a much larger budget.
22:42 is my favorite shot of the entire movie. It's like all of Reeses' fears in an ominous dark shadow with glowing eyes thats coming for him and there's nothing he can do to stop it.
This Is the most Harrowing part for me aswell, the fear it instills and the utter Desperation from Reece, magnificent cinematography 🤘I also get the same feeling when ed-209 fights Robocop into the stairwell, gritty and RAD🤘
22:23 I also love that that's Franco playing one of the Terminators... probably still him in the silhouette shot with the glowing red eyes.
The greatest love story ever told lol. The Tech-Noir scene remains one of my favourite scenes in all film history, and the song "Burning in the Third Degree" that plays, has been part of the soundtrack to my life.
The scene in the truck were arnie says “get out” is superb makeup, looks as real as it gets. My top 3 favourite films of all time this
It's crazy that the role that made Arnold a superstar was him playing a villain since he's always thought of as the hero.
Three of the stars in this were also in Aliens. Micheal Beihn, Bill Paxton & Lance Henrickson.
The scene with hotel cleaner, was to show the damage the terminator took, his human skin was decomposing. Attention to detail in this film was second to none.
Also, the terminator was limping at the end due to being run over by the truck and you see the damage on the left ankle.
This person must have been living under a rock not to have seen all of these blockbuster movies that everyone has seen... pretty hard to believe.
The Terminator and Terminator 2 are such classics! They’re some of my favorite movies of all time
Saw this in theatre 1992 at midnight, I will never forget sneaking out to watch it. It’s best in cinema
I’ll say this for Matt, dude went hand to hand with a terminator and lasted a solid 20 seconds, that’s impressive.

@@S_047 he did better than Bill Paxton and Brian Thompson.
Terminator, Alien, Predator, the Thing, Blade Runner. Best SF movies ever.
You know, after so many viewings it's only just now occurred to me - why did the Terminator crash that car through the police station door? He could have walked over to the inner door and ripped it open. Hell, he could have crashed his arm through the glass, choked the officer sitting there and just climbed through. Why did he bother with the car? I think it's purely a matter of style - despite the Terminators' basic machine nature, it seem they may have personality quirks, such as a flair for the theatrical. 😆
If you watch he evaluated the station and entry area, and probably decided that he needed more firepower than what he had on him( the Ar-18 and shotgun he stole) and that walking back in so armed would give them too much forewarning, possibly allowing the targets to escape. Crashing the car through gives him full access, and confuses the response just a moment as it comes across as 'accident' not attack. Almost pans out, he nearly gets them.
@@MandoWookie, it was also about the shock factor. He obviously did it so they could not react & arm quickly.

First of all. Love the reaction. As always. This film introduced me to Michael Biehn and he's been my favorite action star since then. Always loved the first Terminator from the rest
"I'll be back" "Oh he means right back doesn't he"- the thing that makes this hilarious to me is there was a behind the scenes interview where Cameron mentioned this line was supposed to be a joke for second time viewers, but found audiences could guess exactly what the Terminator meant by "back" pretty quickly.
This launched a massive franchise that consists of movies, comics, graphic novels and videogames, including the first person shooter Terminator Resistance and 3D theme park attraction T2: Battle Across Time. This followed Hercules in New York, Stay Hungry, The Villain, Pumping Iron, Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer, though this was the film that launched Arnold Schwarzenegger's career. There are also crossovers with the RoboCop franchise
Man, I love the first 2 terminators. Great react :D
"He has no eyebrows?"
They were burnt off in the explosion a minute earlier, along with some of his hair.
Interesting how different some of the dubbing is when watched in different languages. In the English version that guy on the phone booth complains about bad attitude, in the German version he says that he should look in the phone book after "axxhole", there he'll probably find his number.
And in the club scene, when Schwarzenegger is entering without paying: "Seen that!? Hercules didn't pay". Referring to Hercules movies of the 1970s where Schwarzenegger portrayed Hercules.
I never notice before, but when you can see his robotic parts--even just his eye--he moves like a robot, but covering them up enables him to move like a human.
I cannot _wait_ to see you react to Terminator 2.
Arnie: *rips through some guy's ribcage*
"I don't know who's a good guy and who's the bad guy"
While filming the movie on the streets of Los Angeles in the middle of the night, the crew had to take a lot of unscheduled breaks.....while Arnold enjoyed and relaxed with a good cigar! True story!
James Cameron said in an interview back in the 90s that he was on a plane one night, with the flu, heavily medicated, and fell asleep. He had a cough syrup induced nightmare about a skeletal machine trying to kill him. He woke up, hurriedly sketched the image on a piece of paper, then used it to develop this movie.
And that's the reason why the Terminator Franchise exists until now..
Fascinating that Kyle always wondered what Sarah was thinking 🤔 in the picture he had of her. The irony was that she was thinking 🤔 of him. Powerful moment in the film. -OG
" Yes! girl realize this is not normal Mooovah!" 🤣🤣🤣😆 Best part of your reaction.
Great reaction! Yes, the 80's ROCKED! BTW, that was a love story consistent with the 80's! ;)
I first saw this movie on a taped VHS. The guy also had taped "Outlaw Jose Wales," but on the label he wrote "Outlaw Jose Whales."
Why did I laugh? Why?
Micheal Biehn as hicks and Kyle Reese was definitely the best roles for him.
8:12 "How do I look?" - "Like shit, boss." - "Your Momma..."
I hope I will have a boss in the future to which I could talk to like that.
T1 and T2 are in my top 5 fav films
I loved watching this reaction, really enjoyed watching you. You’re aren’t over dramatic and seem totally real and logical. I could absolutely watch this with someone like you. You’re awesome :)
Fun fact: OJ Simpson was originally cast for the role of The Terminator, but the producers thought he was too nice for the role.
I thought it was a great bit of writing that the picture Reese had and looked at, wondering what Sarah was thinking about, was in fact a picture of her as she was talking and thinking about Reese.
It's a small detail, but one that shows skilled and clever writing.
You know, I have seen this movie a zillion times and saw a zillion reactions to it and I just realized one of those 3 guys Arnold took the clothes from in the beginning is Bill Paxton. Bill Paxton also played Hudson in Aliens 2. Did you notice Reese give Sarah a walkie talkie to keep track of her? Do you remember the same actor giving Ripley a tracking device in Aliens 2? And the robot in Aliens 2 is a cop in this movie. Oh, in Terminator 2 one of the women is Vasquez from Aliens 2. They look nothing alike in the two movies. Maybe because she is not Hispanic at all but Jewish. LOL.
"I'll be back" The birth of Arnold's catch phrase.
FUN FACT: Lance Henrikson was originally supposed to play the Terminator while Arnold was considered to play Kyle Reese. When pitching the movie to Hemdale Film Corporations, producer John Daly didn't find the idea scary. So director James Cameron had Henrikson show up to the meeting early dressed as the Terminator (sunglasses, leather jacket, fake cuts), kicked open the door and sat in a chair. Cameron showed up shortly after and Daly agreed to finance the movie.
However after Cameron met Arnold, he instantly saw him in the role and cast him instead. Cameron made it up to Henrikson by casting him as a detective in the movie while also casting him as Bishop in his next movie, "Aliens".
Reese's flashbacks and description of his "home" are heartbreaking.
In the '80s/early '90s, Schwarzenegger was a one-man MCU. When you hit _T2: Judgement Day,_ be sure to hit the *THEATRICAL* version. The extended version with alternate ending is _not_ a director's cut - just a studio cashgrab.
Settle in with some popcorn and your favorite German Shepherd; it's movie time!

The Terminator has a "baseline" knowledge of human society in 1984. He just didn't care more than he had to.
1. Linda Hamilton ROCKED. She's really built in T2.
2. Along with Lance Henriksen/Vukovich and Michael Biehn/Reese also played in Aliens as Bishop and Hicks.
3. The late Bill Paxton is the only actor who's characters have died in The Terminator, Alien and Predator series.
4. Ginger's boyfriend must be a lousy lay if she needs her music when they rock and roll.
5. Most chicks catch the John being Reese's son but you did it earlier than anyone else.😎
I read the novelization back in the day. In the book the terminator pulls the guy who stabs him spine out from the front.
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton are good in this one but both shine more in the second one....................Michael Biehn (who is a criminally under-rated actor) carries this movie! He gives all the important exposition and does it so so well!
Ikr!!!
Always a pleasure to see you. Looking forward to this. Thanks. See you later.
James Cameron is the best director of all time in my opinion. He directed terminator 1 ,terminator 2, titanic, and avatar .all those movies were amazing.
also when Kyle was looking at the photo of Sarah he was wondering what she was thinking at that moment, turns out she was thinking of him.
During the police station scene the Terminator walks through a flaming door. The Governator said it was extremely difficult doing the shot, walking through a literally flaming door - with a straight, emotionless face. I mean who would be happy about walking through flames. :D
Cannot watch the intro without the breakfast club principal saying “the next time I have to come back here I’m cracking skulls”
So many little details that are only noticeable if you’ve watched the other movies. 4:42 The car runs over the truck that’s the same style (cab over) that’s in T2. And at 26:20…that’s what the T1000 says when he gets in the helicopter. There are other details through out each of the terminator movies that play back and forth.
The photo at the end. Not only was she carrying his baby, but he used to look at it and wonder why she looked sad; what was she thinking at the time? She was thinking of him.

If I recall correctly in the novelization; based on the medical records available, SKYNET discovers in a routine autopsy report that Sarah Connor had a leg injury (but did not know the injury was from the explosion of the Terminator) that had been present prior to Judgment Day. So later, when SKYNET sends a Terminator to *change* the past, the Terminator can positively identify Sarah based on that leg injury, because SKYNET thought Sarah got the injury as a child.

When 'The Terminator' was first cast, Arnold Schwarzenegger was cast as the soldier... Lance Henriksen was cast as the Terminator, an assassin that could blend in a crowd. But after reading the script, Arnold told the director James Cameron that he wanted to play the Terminator... so the concept was changed - Arnold played the 'unstoppable tank' version Terminator... Lance Henriksen became the police detective... and they recast the soldier to Michael Biehn as 'Reese'.
Lance Henriksen was later cast as the android 'Bishop' in the movies 'Aliens' (Pt. II) and 'Aliens 3'.

How many years did Kyle have that photo of Sharah not knowing that she was thinking of him at that moment? Gets me every time. ;)
always made me laugh when people would say there isnt enough women leads in major action films. star wars. alien. terminator. always saying its guy movies. powerful women ftw
In the old days they made movies for the story. Now they make movies to put women in, to put blacks in, to put gays in... and the story is second. Perfect example is Wonder Woman, the first one was made for the story and is one of the best superhero movies, the second one was made by a feminist to show her views, and was the worst piece of garbage ever filmed.
