  • I've been hunting for that perfect weekend paper puncher and I've found it, the Desert Tech SRS-A1 in 6.5 Creedmoor. The SRS gives me everything I want in a long range rifle including multiple calibers and extreme accuracy. I've gone with the Bushnell Elite Tactical 3.5-21x50mm scope with a Horus H59 reticle too.

    I think my favorite part of the video is Tim explaining how impressed he was with his grouping while standing in front of the gong. He couldn't hold back the ear-to-ear grin :]

      Thanks Dest... and you're right, I love this rifle. It makes me happy just thinking about shooting it. I wish I could go out to the long range on Sunday, but I have to do the family thing. Waiting another week to shoot my rifle is going to drive me nuts.

      Thanks man. Yeah, it keep shooting super tiny groups. If it doesn't shoot a tiny group, it's all the shooter. I love having that type of confidence in my rifle... it keeps me honest.

    I have been an enthusiastic fan of the 6.5mm calibre for a long time. Your choice of the Creedmoor out of a 26" barrel, bolt action rifle shows that a lot of thought has been put into this gun and the justifications you give for this particular setup make a lot of sense. I would love to see more of this rifle in future videos under varying scenarios,especially performance at extreme ranges.

    Glad you saw the light MAC! That round has the best BC of almost any other round out there. There is a reason why f class br comps are all using it, inherent accuracy.

    ... Also... At this price point, I would like to see how the SRS in .300 WM stacks up against the NEMO in .300 WM in the raw accuracy department. They both obviously have pros/cons, but the winner in the accuracy department may get my vote for overall winner... It is too close to call at this point. I have seen some insanely small long range, sub-half-MOA groups out of the NEMO as well. This would be a very interesting competition to say the least. You could also slap the .338 Lapua bolt/barrel in the SRS and take on the AA Ulfberht. There are 2 excellent comparisons I would be glued to my iPad watching. Great job once again... THANK YOU!!

    Thanks for all the great videos, and info. and Good Luck with the new business venture. I like the 140 grain A-max, G1 BC .585, the 120's are around . 46x I believe.
    Been shooting the 6.5 creedmoor 140 grain a-max for a while in an AR platform, last shoot I went to (600 yards) its ballistics smoked all the other guys shooting .308, it's just got a flattern path.
    Just bought a Desert Tactical in 6.5, will be doing a video soon.

    I dont know what you are talking about. I get my FGMM 168gr and 175gr ammo online for $1.19/round. I try to buy at least 200 rounds at a time so with shipping it only cost a few cents more per round. That being said, the Creedmore is a FAR superior cartridge capable of shooting out to 1500 yards.
    I have a Bushy Tac Elite scope too. Love it. The G2 reticle is FAR easier to use than the Horus and a ton less busy. I have not found a better reticle than the G2. George Gardener at GA Precision helped develop that reticle, BTW. There are some awesome videos showing rapid change up shots from 300 to 800 yards in different directions using ONLY the reticle hold over. Pretty awesome. You do, of course need to have a range card developed for your cartridge in the approximate environment you are shooting.
    On 21 power (24 power in my case) the reticle is capable of VERY precise yet very QUICK hold overs. Give the G2 a try and you will never go back. The Bushnell 6-24x50 G2 and the 3.5-21x50 G2 are the two best variable non illuminated scopes in the world. I have seen some seriously abusive torture testing of these scopes on RUclips by 8541 Tactical.

    Glad you chopped the beard down a bit, MAC.
    I'm in love with that rifle!
    I've never given the 6.5C much thought. After it came to market I think I put it out of mind, waiting to see which new wonder cartridge would last. It's hard enough finding decent hunting ammo for a buck a round, let alone some match grade stuff.

    • @Militaryarmschannel
      @Militaryarmschannel  10 лет назад +1

      I think it's safe to say 6.5 Creedmoor is here to stay. It's dominating the long range precision competitions and it's really taken off on the commercial market too where average Joe's like me are shooting it now. Hornady has a number of offerings as so does Nosler. You can get Barnes VLD bullets for reloading that people are having very good results with in the accuracy department.

    • @ssstealth
      @ssstealth 10 лет назад

      This is good news, MAC. I've been so caught up learning about shooting beyond 1000yds that I haven't paid much attention to what's being done at shorter distances. The longest shot I have access to is a hair over 600m on my friend's farm. I dream of the day when I have a 1000yd or even 1mile range to shoot at. Too many trees here in Maine!

  • @almartin4159
    @almartin4159 9 лет назад +13

    I can appreciate the precision of modern rifles and their ability to hold tight groups at 200 yards. I was trained in the US army to hit a target at 1000 yards with iron sights. Of course I needed a spotter to read the wind and give me wind adjustments but at the All Army Rifle Competitions at Fort Benning Georgia in 1978 with my match grade M1A I scored 197 out of 200at the 1000 yard range. It's all about tuning your rifle to the ammo and sticking with one rifle that you know inside and out. If I am aiming at you with my M1-A you will not escape. To me 200 yards is the same as point blank.

      +LivetoShoot Sure I am. I wouldn't put it in the class with a high grade match bolt rifle but as a military issue rifle in the semi auto class the M1A has awesome potential in the hands of a good gunsmith. They can be fitted with heavy match grade barrels and sights and glass bedded into thick walnut stocks. Either you love them or not they still go bang and I like them just for that alone.

    Tim, the staff at Desert Tech are producing some excellent rifles. And they've only been around since 2007. I saw their in development MDR (Micro Dynamic Rifle), which is a Bull Pup semi auto coming out in 5.56mm. From the prototype I saw at Shot Show 2014. I honestly, believe the MDR will be giving the Tavor a serious run for their money. And be competing with all the bull pups. As well as, being a top contender. Especially if the price point is the same as the Tavor or cheaper. The MDR safety and even the magazine release button was very AR type too. And you get a bit more room on the guard rail over the Tavor.
    I was going to purchase another Tavor, due to the wife like's a bull pup design over her AR. But, now with the MDR forecasted to be released sometime in the first quarter of 2015. I'm going to wait. Still love my Tavor. I suppose if the wife bugs me enough and I can't be patient enough. I can always get another Tavor. And still get the MDR when it comes to market. Keep the MDR in the back of mind to do a review. That's provided when the come out, of course.
    Respectfully,
    Rick S. M.D.; Ph.D.

    This rifle is really amazing, it just seems like it would have been really easy to add, just for example, a rod welded onto the top side of the bolt that runs down the barrel and stops where the trigger is, and have the bolt knob attached to that, so that you could operate the bolt from a more natural location. Im sure there is a way to do this that would look better, and Im sure its not a huuuge inconvenience to have to reach back to your shoulder, but it seems like that would have been something easy to tack on

    Question: why haven't they brought the handle forward? Eg: instead of coming straight out of the bolt, it comes out a bit, extends forward, THEN moves fully to the right, it would make it more ergonomic to use as your hand doesn't need to go so far back, it's also closer to the trigger.

    This is an impressive video, and I'm impressed with the shooter's skill. I am, however, astonished at his offhand comment, " I may be out of ammo."
    Having been a shooter for most of my life, especially as a sworn Police Officer, I have always been 100% aware of exactly how many rounds I have fired, and how many rounds I have left in the magazine, tube, or cylinder.
    As far as the "suppressed" vs. "un-suppressed" discussion is concerned, that is merely a point of necessity.

    • @rainmechanic

      Both the Creedmore and the 260 Reminton are 6.5mm built on 308 cases... No matter what you do to a Grendel it simply does not have the horsepower to compete with either of the 308 based cartridges.... Its only real attribute is the fact that it's the best long range cartridge that will operate in the AR15... And if that is your platform then its a great cartridge.... However if your really serious about long range and want an affordable Semi Auto i would go with any one of the AR10 platforms in either .243 Winchester (6x51) or 260 Remington (6.5 x 51).... Both with barrel twists optimized to shoot the long VLD type Bullets that are best for long range shooting.. .260 remington will give more velocity then the 6.5 Creedmore but you have to handload it if you want to shoot the High BC bullets because factory long range ammo is not readily available for the 260.... If you have to shoot factory ammo then go with the 6.5 Creedmore or the .308 ....

    A quick question; how does this gun compare to the Nemo Arms Omen Recon, obviously they're both on different platforms, but I'm just curious how you felt the the recoil, usability, accuracy compared on the two guns? I know you haven't yet done your full review of the Nemo but I'm just curious how they stack up. Thanks so much for the videos!

    Just a thought, but, I would like to see some tests between the 6.5 creedmoor and 308 Winchester. We all know the 6.5 wins in long range with the higher BC and faster fps. But I wonder how the knock down power and penetration compares?

    Tim,
    Any regrets on picking the A1 over the Covert? Anything you wish you had choose differently?
    I’m in the market for one and I’m looking for input before I commit to dropping the large sum of money on a rifle.

      It all depends on barrel length. If you are going extra long range shooting, you will probably wan the A1 (Now the A2). If you want a compact rifle and aren't planning on shooting past 1500yards, the covert is awesome. You can still put the longer barrels in the covert without any issues at all but it just looks kinda funny with the long barrel sticking out of the short forearm. The beauty of the A2 is that you can change the forearm from covert to standard without any special tools now. I got the covert and don't have any regrets.

    You went well with .300 Win Mag for super long range. I think .338 is too expensive. I hear 7mm-08 is also a good bullet.

    • @rainmechanic
      @rainmechanic 10 лет назад

      The .300 win Mag firing the 208gr A-Max bullet will do everything the .338 Lapua will do 80 percent of what can be done with the .338 Lapua and do it at over half the ammunition costs.... that cost even carries over to handloading since .338 components are the most expensive components to reload for save for the 50BMG... for extreme long range (past 1500 yards) and for those wanting Anti Material Capabilities under 600 yards the .338 is worth the extra cost... but only then.... and very few people east of the Mississippi have places where shooting past 1000 yards is even feasible...

    Many many upsides - one dealbreaking downside: WAY TOO HEAVY. Not *really* field-mobile enough for my tastes. And super expensive. But great rifle if you've got the bank, and excellent chambering choice -- and explanation for same. If I got a DTA SRS, I'd go with 7mm WSM or 7mm RSAUM with 8.7 twist for Berger 180s. Overall, very nice vid; thanks. My long range rig used to be in 7mm RSAUM. Now I have two medium-weight long-rangers, in .243 win and 6.5mm-'06 A-Square. But to me, long range is 400 yards, not 1000 - I suck.

  • @dadajackyo
    @dadajackyo 10 лет назад

    Hey Tim, did you do any sort of barrel break in procedure with that rifle? I know a lot of manufactures recommend a method for improving barrel life and cleaning. Also, how easy is it to clean the barrel at the range? It looks like you have to tear down the rifle somewhat to get a bore guide in there. Or, do you just pull the barrel and clamp it down to clean it? Thanks.

    • @Militaryarmschannel
      @Militaryarmschannel  10 лет назад +1

      I don't do barrel break-ins, they're voodoo in my experience. I punched the bore with patches (I rarely use brushes) and started shooting. I don't do the fire 5 or 10 rounds and clean stuff, it has zero affect on accuracy in my experience. It does, however, shorten barrel life if you constantly brush your barrel. To clean you push a little tab and slide the buttpad off. Retract the bolt, which will come straight out the back, and start cleaning from the chamber end of the barrel.

    • @dadajackyo
      @dadajackyo 10 лет назад

      Military Arms Channel I don't use brushes on my rifles. I like Butchs bore shine. Really does wonders on removing copper fouling. I use Hoppes benchrest #9 occasionally also. I'm not that great of a shot, so I'm really just wasting my time I think.

    Just want to ask a stupid question. Can you benefit from the short action calibre the 6.5C is in this rifle considering a bolt and barrel change gives you a 300WM? The action must still be long then? Also how does the magazine well cope with catridges of such different lengths?

  • @denvera1g1
    @denvera1g1 10 лет назад

    they should have made it a streight pull with a bolt bar that is run up ahead of the bolt and on the left side to be operated by the other hand, on just in front of the grip on the right for right hand operation

    Nice rifle - looks like a beast, espcially those nice little groups!
    I like the bullpup design - 26" inch barrel and the same length as a 18" standard rifle. However, as someone who shoots lefty, most right handed rifles work for me, I don't think a bull-pup would.
    After watching you shoot it looks the recoil is managed very well.
    Where I live, finding 5.56x45 or 7.62x51 isn't an issue. I've never looked for 6.5 Creedmoor - is it pretty easy to find?
    Again, nice rifle, thanks for posting.

    Awesome video! I just had a long nice chat with Ryan @ desert tech. Very interested in this rifle in 338lm and 6.5 cm. I do have two concerns and that being one where the magazine to support hand location when firing the magnum. That mag looks like it could make for a bad day when it recoils gouging into your hand. Second being also bull pup problem I can see if you have a sticky bolt " also a magnum problem" having issues making that bolt run while keeping a good cheek weld. Has this been a problem for you?

  • @ub00313

    For a SHTF situation, would you take the 300 over the .308 or the 338? why is that? I only ask because I'm in the market for a long range rifle and am hearing conflicting but yet compelling arguments for the available calibers (namely the three mentioned above) that will reach out that far. Thoughts on caliber and type of rifle?

  • @thirdwhitecrow
    @thirdwhitecrow 10 лет назад

    Between this for long range, and the Tavor for CQ, you've got the full bullpup kit.
    One question -- it seems like an advantage of the bullpup design for this rifle is that if you find yourself having to shoot it from a standing, kneeling, or sitting position, I would think that the rifle would be a lot less nose-heavy than a conventional sniper rifle. Have you found that to be true?

    • @Militaryarmschannel
      @Militaryarmschannel  10 лет назад

      Yes, bullpups will always be less nose heavy than a conventional rifle given the weight of the action is behind the pistol grip vs. in front of it.

    I am going to get the 6.5 as well. price 4 premium ammo is the same as my 6.8spc that I shoot out of my Daniel Defense/ambush m4v7,which is my primary deer riffle,offten il use my Henry 357 mag its actually more exciting to take a deer with the Henry, the 6.8 just does all the work for me lol...the 6.5 will be my choice its not to heavy on the wallet when its range day

    • @Militaryarmschannel
      @Militaryarmschannel  10 лет назад

      With both barrels the gun is about $7k. With the scope there's another $2k. So, it's a considerable investment which is why I have given so much thought to it and weighed my options carefully. I'm very pleased with my choice so far.
