  • Hi everyone, I’m Matt Freeman, Bass Player for Rancid. Welcome to my new RUclips channel the "Bass Bunker." On this channel, I’m going to be doing videos where I play along to Rancid songs, as well as various songs of other bands that I’ve played in over the years. I’m also going to do videos where I break down the bass lines and show you what I’m doing, as well as how I’m doing it along with some general knowledge about how I approach playing the bass. Hope you like it. Please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE, and let me know what you think of this one in the comments below. Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it.

I don’t think I have ever been more excited for a RUclips channel! You’re one of the reasons I picked up a bass 25 years ago!

Really appreciate this Matt. It’s always enlightening to hear bassists talk about their thinking behind bass parts. We can often intuit things by playing along and learning the tricks but it’s often revelatory to hear the bassist themselves speak to it.

Been listening to Rancid since I was 14. I'm 43 now and still listening to Rancid. Me and my sister both have Rancid tattoo's and we've seen the band perform multiple times. Got Tim and Lars autograph in the year 2,000. I even hitchhiked x994 miles just to see you guys play ( I was 18 at the time). I found Tim in the mosh pit during the Distillers performance, he was literally standing right next to me and then we both jumped in. I'll never forget that experience. Looking forward to the upcoming show in Toronto, Canada!

I always loved the bass guitar and always wanted to learn how to play. Unfortunately growing up my parents weren’t loaded, and the only bass in the house was bought for my brother who ofc never let his little sister play. I just might look for a bass now and start learning. It’s never too late.

Thank you for doing this Matt, you're one of my biggest influences and have been since I bought "Rancid 2000" 24 years ago..! I have been transcribing your bass lines recently using the Moises app to isolate your bass, and writing them down in a hardback bass tablature book. There are some that I could never play though..! Anyway, long story short, this is awesome..! Looking forward to the new videos. Cheers. Mark.

Thanks a bunch for sharing secrets of the low end stuff. 🙌 Being a multi-instrumentalist myself, there’s always one instrument that stands out in every band - In rare cases more, in some bands all of ’em - that makes you really just wonder ”how does that work, I wanna play like that”. For me it was always the BASS in Rancid.
I subscribed and will keep an eye on your channel. Hope to see some more tracks from And Out Come The Wolves and some more Op Ivy stuff.

  • @SimonHardy-rt9ub

One day you could try play them on an accoustic bass. I use to use a loop pedal for vocals but sometimes i would use the pedal to loop a guitar riff. And then i would overplay on top of it. And add layers.
I bet that is something you would do really well with

    • @SimonHardy-rt9ub

I am quite a big talker.
But perhaps as well Matt, you could compose good chip tunes. You know, old arcade tracks. I bet you could if you had a good tool for it. A custom tool maybe. I have been working in this field of building a timing mechanism to compose from chip as there are very few tools available it is hard to know what to use these or even find it to begin with. Often is the way to make these things yourself
Particularly difficult to grasp the concept of was producing bass waves from the speaker via defining a wave as a list of values. And stretching or thinning that wave and safely produce bass that doesn't destroy speakers.
It's quite difficult for most people to get their heads around
