Thanks for this. Just got me through a replacement in a parking lot at 98 with 100% humidity. Saved a bunch of time.
Very helpful video. Just changed the belts on our 2016 CX-5 and the water pump stretch belt gave me fits...but I found a way easier way to do it and once discovered, took me 15 seconds. So, instead of first placing the belt around the harmonic balancer (crank pulley) and attampting to drag it onto the water pump pulley, place the belt over the water pump pulley first and then start it onto the edge of the balancer pulley. Use the ratchet and socket to pull the belt onto the balancer pulley. Yes, the belt will be severely misaligned at this point, but just keep rotating the crank while using your thump to force the belt across the balancer pulley ribs. After a few revolutions, the belt finds itself to the last 3 ribs of the pulley and you're done. Wish I'd discovered this before fighting with that belt for a half hour!
9.5 minute video and it took me over an hour to do both belts. But its done, so thank you sir!
Great video, here is a tip that will make it even better. Before you try to take the bolts out if the tensioner, Take the belt off. That will make turning the bolts much easer.
Thank you for the video. Going to replace the belts this weekend.

stick an alan key in the tensioner to lock the wheel cocked back. there should be a little hole on the cast to do this. makes putting the larger belt on a breeze.
Excellent video with one exception. You haven't mentioned the size socket or wrenches you needed for this job..

@@YOUCANIC With all due respect.. I've been a tech for 40 years.. Just friendly advice. 👍
Thanks for people like you
My serpatine belt broke , should I go ahead and replace the drive belt as well ? Since imma get a new serpatine belt.
Without having the right belt tensioner tool, I did pretty much the same install process as the first belt. I installed a new tensioner and that thing was a PIA to use just a regular 17 mm wrench to install the belt.

@@YOUCANIC Putting the rear belt on was a trick in of itself. I know most auto parts stores have the installation tool available, just doesn't make sense that the engineers didn't devise a way to loosen the pump for easier installation of the rear belt. As for the front belt, again, the proper long arm tensioner wrench would be greatly helpful for leverage because that new hydraulic tensioner takes some leverage to allow you to loop the new belt.
Thanks, you just saved me some time!!!
Good video. Wish I have can do this, but I think I'll stick with oil, atf, brakss,, spark plugs.
Thank you for the video. Can you provide the two belt part numbers please? Thank you.
It may vary with model year but I know on the 2016 CX-5 2.5 the serpentine was PY01-15-909A and the water pump belt was PY01-15-908 , again make sure to check with engine and year you have.
Is this the same for a 2018 model?
Can you actually show us how to do the stretch belt without fast forwarding through it?
Thank you very much good sir.
My belt squeals every time I turn on the Air conditioning, should I replace all the belts?
That means it’s probably your AC compressor squealing
I did the stretch belt late at night when it tore, but I pulled so hard the tensioner it just stayed free with no tension. I'm wondering if it's supposed to do that? I need to do the serpentine belt still. Cars been running fine still for more than 6 months.
The tensioner is hydraulic, powered by oil pressure. You forced the oil out. When you start the car, it should repressurize and go back to normal. (unless it is worn out). Since it's been running fine you are probably ok.
@@hatchetoverlandNo absolutely not. The tensioner on a 2016 CX-5 is self contained and does not get pressure from the engine. DAFUQ?
What size socket was that for the stretch belt replacement. I did hear a 17 mm wrench to take tension off at the beginning
No socket used to remove/install water pump's stretch belt.
Per my frustrating experience, the Gates water pump "Stretchfit" belt (K030309SF) supplied by Rockauto, carried by Advance and O'Reillys (same number) does not fit, or, if you can get it on, it will ruin the pump bushing/bearing due to excessive strain. All videos show the belt being readily slipped over the pulley projection and then worked onto the pulley grooves. I was unable to get the Gates belt over the pulley projection as it is about 1/2" shorter than the OEM belt. I bought a belt from Mazda (
Thanks … also did you just call Mazda and ask if you could buy the part or how did that process go
Thanks for the heads-up on the Gates WP stretch belt ($10). I had already ordered the Gates belt from RockAuto, along with the Gates Serp Belt & Tensioner, and will be performing the installation this weekend. I went to the local Mazda dealer today and they had the $39 OEM Stretch Belt in-stock. $29 for another 1/2" of rubber... will compare the two before install, regardless.
I budget 2x the book time on jobs like this. So if this is a 2 hr job, I expect to finish it in about 4 hrs. It's either $500 or about 4 hrs of my time. What about a new tensioner while you were in there? Then, after this belt swap, I need to service the f/r diffs. I learned a lot from my mk4 GTI, but the Germans do things differently.
Good video. Thanks.
thanks i laughed when the zap strap idea worked hahaha
This video super sucks. You fast forward through all the hard parts. You don't even show removing the splash guard
I agree. I totally don’t have any clue how to do the stretch belt.
get better kid
