    Thank you so much for being so generous with your wealth of experience and knowledge.
    I’ve rescued now for the last 2 decades and haven’t lived with a puppy until 48hours ago. Our dream rural living, in the middle of 4 farms with horses and livestock outside each window and garden fence, we decided it would be fairest for all to start with a puppy young enough to environmentally condition to our unusual set of circumstances.
    He’s here, he’s beautiful and I’m hoping to make his prn and crate area more welcoming and comforting. I’m currently sleeping by his pen in our bedroom. Going to start working on separation tomorrow. He’s already showing he’s becoming really engaged with me..I don’t want him to feel worried about me not being next to him and would love to set him up for success.
    Thank you!

  • @sebofdoom

    Great video Emily!
    We have definitely made mistakes introducing our pup to his playpen. He still does not love being in there even when we sit or stand right besides it - He will not nap by him self, so getting him in there and enforcing calm behavior is the only way to get him to sleep - Though he will fight it for some minutes with whining and jumping up on the sides.
    Do you recommend using high or low values treats for this? I am worried that high value treats are getting him too excited.

    Fabulous as always! What tips do you have for the common situation where clients don't have time to teach their puppy to be comfortably alone in the pen? I encourage a ton of enrichment, appropriate exercise, adaptil, etc. but clients really struggle with common situations where they have to subject the pup to something they haven't trained because the training takes a while (confinement, husbandry/start buttons, etc.).

    • @Redsammeh
      @Redsammeh 3 года назад +4

      Chews that are safe, long lasting, and reinforcing will help. Bully sticks, kongs/marrow bones filled with frozen wet food, etc

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  3 года назад +5

      for the pen, having them set it up right next to where they are, and perhaps having multiple ones, so one near the family dinner table the tv area and the bedroom, that way you can put the puppy right next to you and reach your hand into the pen or step over to comfort the puppy if they started to worry about being in there, then when the puppy is used to the pen they can start the training, but first getting the puppy used to being in the pen when having company around it can make it faster to teach them to be alone in it rather than just being dumped in one had have the door shut.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  3 года назад +5

      I always say a disclaimer that there really isnt a "safe" anything, accidents can happen with anything you give your dog so you need to use common sense depending on your dogs behavior.

    Great video and it couldn't be a better time for me! I'm getting a puppy on Sunday 😊 something I'm really confused about though is what to do when I can't be in the pen with my puppy like for example when I have to go to the bathroom, do laundry, etc. but my puppy isn't 100% comfortable yet being in the pen alone. I'm definitely going to do training sessions throughout the day in the pen to get him used to it, but until that point do I leave him with a Kong and hope that he doesn't cry or am I supposed to take him with me everywhere until he's more comfortable in the pen? Thank you so much for your videos! 💜

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  3 года назад +3

      It really depends on the puppy. Having a baby gate can help if you have a house with many rooms and no doors, but you can just close the puppy in a room with you, or put a pen or barrier up so your puppy is in the same room as where you do the laundry or cook etc. I suggest taking the puppy out to the toilet then beginning the task with of course an eye on the puppy. The first few days are the days that the puppy is going to be reinforced for different things they interact with, so its a great idea to make sure they are the dog toys and not your stuff. So being extra careful in the first few days is the best idea. Some puppies come trained to be left alone, Halo could be left 3 hours easily when I first got him, so when I needed to walk the other dogs, I put him in his pen walked the dogs did stuff I needed to do, but epic my chihuahua, could not be left alone without panicking, so I had her in a baby stroller when I was cooking or doing laundry before she was ok to be loose with my other dogs or left alone in a pen

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  3 года назад

      It really depends on the puppy you get, if you get a new puppy who is extremely anxious being left alone, then it will be hard. I suggest getting a puppy that is really comfortable being left alone. Otherwise if theres just one of you its hard to do stuff like go to the grocery store. When I got Epic I had to do an extreme plan of slowly bumping up the time she could be left alone and luckily my brother was living here at the time so I could actually go to the store to get groceries without a set back.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  3 года назад +5

      I forgot to talk about it, I got it at Lowes, they sell them in rolls, and they are light easy to carry and cut, but if the puppy gets ahold of the edge they can easily chew it. So the edges have to be out of reach

      Teaching them to do a calm settle in the car while it's not moving did wonders for me. After that, if you have someone to help out you can have them work on it while the car is moving around. We keep treats on hand while driving still but don't have to use too many per drive at this point.

      Emily is right, settle in car with engine off, on back seat and both doors open at first. Some pups are so sensitive that I have the owners repeat this step a lot, the close one door then the other and just sit and praise and treat in the quiet car. Finally, turn engine on but don't go anywhere. With some pups baby steps. These pups now love the car as it often means a fun destination!
