Cardigan is an absolute masterpiece. This is from her album folklore. This is supposed to be a love triangle. Cardigan is Betty's POV, Betty is James's POV and August is the other girl's POV. You absolutely need to react August and Betty to get the whole story. It is absolutely genius. This whole album is a masterpiece (like her all other albums).
Yeah it definitely is a sad song. The guy left her to pursue another girl but she's like a cardigan- after all that discarding, he'll come back to her. I think you're on the right track. This song is part of a love triangle actually. Cardigan is from Betty's perspective; Betty is from James' perspective; and August is from the other girl's perspective who is the girl that James pursued. I would recommend those two songs next. They have lyric videos! Loved the reaction btw!
The first verse of the song represent her eras: Vintage tee, brand new phone (her Red era, was more hipster-ish) High heels on cobblestones (her 1989 era, was more in glam and in NY ) Sequin smile, black lipstick (her Reputation era, when she debuted her glitter lips in the Met Gala) Sensual politics (her Lover era, in which she was more vocal about her political stance and it was a lovey album)

Also, in her "Begin Again" MV she is shown sitting under a willow tree, so therefore I believe she has a perchance for willow trees. "I knew everything when I was young " - Betty in the song Cardigan "I'm only seventeen, I don't know anything" - James in the song Betty It delves into how everyone assumes a teenager doesn't know the matters of the world and lives in a bubble but Betty knew every faint detail about James, tals of the town and about James' summer fling. On the flipside, James is trying to win 'the one' back by claiming he didn't realise Betty was his true love because he was young and naive. Even the vernacular difference in these two songs reflect on their individual maturity and thought process. Taylor is a lyrical genius and master storyteller.
there is a theory that the video represents taylor's eras: she starts in a room (with a portait of his grandfather) representing her home and where she started off from, then she goes to a forest with a lot of green and waterfalls representing when she got really really famous around 2013, then she's drowning in the middle of the sea (i don't know if you know all the drama with kanye west but basically the whole internet turned on her because of an edited phone call and she disappeared off the face of the earth for a year) but then she grabs onto the piano symbolizing how music saved her in that time (she made her comeback with her album reputation) and then she goes back to the original room, meaning that she's gone back to her roots and she's comfortable again in a similar place to where she started off but the difference is that now she's not as put together as in the begging, she's soaking wet, representing all the stuff that she's gone through
As for the lyric “you drew stars around my scars” - I took it as a way of them making her scars pretty and kind of giving them a new meaning so they are no longer the meaning of the hurt that created the scars.
So that was my initial thought to that lyric but then the line immediately after is what threw me off "But now i'm bleeding". What do you take that to mean?
@@SuffiReax I took it as after he did all that to help heal her scars he turned around and reopened them by doing the same thing or doing something else that was bad - like choosing the other girl/being with the other girl she talks about in the line “chase two girls lose the one”
@@SuffiReax Taylor is a wiz at double entendres - I take her use of the word “drew” in two ways: to draw physical stars which symbolize hope and wonderment, then to feel the pain of emotionally “drawing” blood before our protagonist has time to protect her old wounds.
cardigan is part of the folklore teenage love triangle. this song is from the perspective of betty, a teenage girl being cheated on; her song betty is from the perspective of james, the guy who cheats; and her song august is from the perspective of the mistress. i'd love to see your reactions to betty and august!!
“You drew stars around my scars now I’m bleeding” to me means: stars are dreamy. You made me forget my past (scars), made me dream of a beautiful and infinite future but now I’m bleeding because of what happened between us re opened my scars
Also the piano being with her all the time can symbolise that even if everything was wrong, she always had music by her side. ps- if you do betty, please do the live version.
Lyrics wise, Cardigan is from the perspective of a made-up character named Betty. Taylor created a trilogy of a teenage love triangle in her album Folklore. Check out her other songs called "Betty" from the perspective of the boy named James, and "August" from the perspective of the side chic who apparently was named Augustine according to Taylor. you may be able to catch some parts like "cobblestones", "front porch", "kiss in car" etc.. especially in Cardigan, Betty says "when you are young they assume you know nothing/I knew everything when I was young" in response to James who said in Betty "I'm only 17, I don't know anything"
Her voice is smooth, not how i remember her first song as teenager. So i stepped away to hear ""love story"" and yeah her voice has really matured like a fine wine. Very nice.
Yes there is a whole story behind this song, there is a trilogy on the album that tells the story of James, Betty and Augustine, cardigan is Betty's povs. The songs are: Betty August Cardigan In this exactly order. It would be awesome if you'd react to the other 2 songs
Great reaction. Seriously, if you're into lyrics do all of Folklore and Evermore. I was not a Swiftie before these albums, just appreciated the occasional bop. But I have become a true fan. Her writing is mind blowing. Layers of metaphors and imagery that gets you right in the feels.
Same here. Folklore and Evermore are remarkable albums, just immense achievements in both songwriting and singing. Extraordinary symbolism, rapturous lyrics, unforgettable atmosphere and feeling. I liked her earlier music okay but found it a bit lightweight. I never dreamed she had this kind of hidden depth and sophisticated artistry. These two records made a fan of me for life. Talk about coming into your own, WOW. I will never get tired of listening to these songs, not ever.
The part of her in the ocean with the piano also has another meaning. During the pandemic a lot of musicians used their music as a way of escape. At the beginning of the video the piano (the music) takes her to the forest and magical places. And when she was in the storm she literally hold to the music to survive. (She hold to the piano to survive)
I think, for me, there are two stories that are happening in this video: 1st is in the lyrics. It is the introduction of the triangle of POVs with Betty, James & Augustine that runs through folklore, which a lot of people already explained in the comments. But the second storyline is through the visuals that tie more in the visuals and lyrics of Willow. This is more on a personal story. She first started at home, her safe place. But through music, her playing the piano, transported her into amazing places (the theory was it’s either her journey to stardom or it’s her imagination/sanctuary). So when she leaves, she’s lost at a very turbulent sea but music (piano) is what keeps her afloat and what would eventually lead her home. This hero’s journey arc mirrors what happened in Willow but the thing that puts her into action is the “single thread of gold tied me to you” which is a line from Invisible String inside the evermore album.
Both folklore and evermore have smart great lyrics that will make you think ...would love to see you react to each song ...she has really nice lyric videos for all the songs ...I love how you pay so much attention the the lyrics ...really enjoying your Taylor reaction videos 💜
Loved the reaction though. One of her most amazing song! Yes this comes first and willow comes after (from folklore's sister album Evermore which came after).
Cardigan is also a love song to her fans. She paints the love story between Betty and James “i knew you, playing hide and seek and giving me your weekends” you picture Two love birds but hide and seek also represents the cheeky clues and riddles she leaves her fans, while giving me your weekends is her fans coming to her concerts (always on a weekend) or listen to her new releases (usually on a Friday) “when i felt like an old cardigan” or like a has been or canceled, you guys said I’m your favorite artist ect.. she’s telling her fans thanks for always showing me your love over the years❤️

I knew you'd miss me once the thrill expired, and you'd be standing in my front porch light, and I knew you'd come back to me... Some of the best lyrics I have ever heard on these two albums. Taylor is not who everyone thinks she is. She is absolutely one of the best lyricist there ever was. Pure poetry.
cardigan, August and Betty they are songs from different perspectives of a love triangle/cheating situation , So you now need to listen August and Betty
PLS react to Betty and August!!! These three songs are apart the love triangle! Betty - boyfriends POV August - side chicks POV Cardigan - girlfriends POV “Chase two girls (Betty and the side chick) lose the one (Betty aka who’s perspective cardigan is from)
Yes, like others have commented, you need to hear "Betty" that is the boyfriend point of view, then "August" that represents the "girl he cheated with" POV. Cardigan is the real girlfriends POV. It will be fun seeing you catch the lyrics that line up in all 3 songs! When you check out Betty, listen to her live performance from 2019 or 2020 (?) ACM awards. I don't think Willow is supposed to have anything to do with the songs mentioned above.
Btw that lyric you kept coming back to “a friend to all is a friend to none” is a saying basically meaning that you can’t pleas everyone. If you are friendly with everyone, someone is always going to be unhappy with you. If you’re friends with a racist, even just to be nice, people are going to be angry. You can’t have everyone like you. Especially in the context of a love triangle. You can’t be with us both-you have to choose one and if you take too long you may loose the one you really want.
Loved your reaction, can't wait for you to listen to more music from her, she's truly incredible! I'd love for you to react to champagne problems, august, illicit affairs or tolerate it next! :)
First time viewing the song and its MV, straight through a reaction video and out of many reactions suggested, I'm glad I chose you! 💚 The MV is epic and lyrical, deep art that let us live within the story and feel the whole emotions from the sugar to the revelation. Thanks for your elaborations, they're on point 👌🏼
She knew everything because she knew he'd come back to her in the end. And he did (in the song Betty). Like many other comments said you should react to Betty and August next because they tell the rest of the story and you seems to be interested in it. Maybe August first and then Betty. It's nice to see how much you noticed in a first listen. :) I'd love to see a full Folklore album reaction tbh because I want to see your first thoughts to all of the songs. :)
“You drew stars around my scars but now I’m bleeding” is a very metaphorical lyric. the scars represent her past, he came along and drew stars around them, he made her ugly past into a work of art, but then when he left the scars opened up and now she’s bleeding. So it’s like she’s saying she had bad memories form the past, (scars) then he came along and made her happy, (drew stars) but when he left her she was left in worse condition than she was in before she came along (now I’m bleeding). Kind of the opposite of the “better to have loved and lost than never loved at all” sentiment. She’s saying she was better off before he even came because while she had scars, at least they weren’t bleeding anymore, but now that he’s come and betrayed her those scars are now open wounds
Yea! I think you got it! It’s “Betty” looking back on a teenage relationship where James cheated on her but ended up coming back to her to beg her forgiveness. The teenage love triangle. August and Betty ( there is a live performance of Betty at the CMAs). You need to do them in order though. August next and Betty last. People have already given it away for you but on the album it was a puzzle to figure out which songs were in the trilogy and Betty, track 14, finally made it all make sense and tied it up really nicely. The cabin. The picture of the man is her grandfather who she writes about in track 13. The clock is set to 1-3, 13 is her favorite number. The paintings of a house are actually painted by Taylor (she paints as a hobby) and it represents track 3, The Last Great American Dynasty. This is a story with a reveal at the end, I didn’t want to give it away. But yes to listening to this one. Sequined smile black lipstick, sensual politics. High heels on cobblestone. Another theory is that these two lines are about the 2016 Met Gala where she wore black lipstick, and The gala can be very politically themed. In New York, she had a place in a cobblestone street. This is when she met Joe. But, the song really isn’t about that, it’s fiction, I just think she pulled from her personal memories a little to describe a scene at night walking on cobblestones all dressed up in heels and black lipstick.
I really, really like you being willing to delve into her lyrics and work it out as you go. I'm very impressed. So not like most people. Also- you might consider keeping the lyrics in front of you on your phone, on Genius or something, while you watch the videos, so you have them right there. Great reaction! Could you do "Mad Woman- Long Pond Sessions", please?- SDK
Listened to august and betty, it was a related to each other. Cardingan, august and betty was a love triangle cardingan was pov of betty. August was pov of inez. Betty was pov august
I’m my opinion, the song is about how in love they were and she thought she knew him and then he still left. So when she says “you drew stars around my scars but now I’m bleeding”, she’s saying that he was there and learned about each of her wounds and helped her heal and then he hurt her too..
hey! suggestion for ya: i really love your thought process and how you analyze the lyrics, but on first listen i know it’s hard to remember all the lyrics. maybe after you finish listening to the music and watching the video you could pull up genius lyrics and use that to help you with your explanations! plus there are often some quotes from the artist about the meaning of the song that you can read about, if you choose to! I know some people prefer just giving their own initial interpretation instead of reading about it, which is totally fine too. Just a suggestion :) I also recommend you listen to August and Betty off of folklore next. they’re a continuation of the story in cardigan!
I think "drew stars around my scars" line refers to how he made her feel good,or made things seem good, but it was just a temporary fix so she's bleeding now.
I know this video is from awhile ago so you might not see this comment haha, but my biggest recommendation with Taylor Swift is listening/watching with lyrics. Her word choice is always really beautifully specific and integral to the meaning of her lyricism and even as a fan I would be lost and missing things without a few good listens while reading the lyrics!
"You drew stars around my scars" is intimate and she is bleeding because he let her down afterwards. She has the lyric "hand up my sweatshirt" second base....it is about high school love, ...they are only 17.. He slept with Augustina..
This a conversation between Betty, and James several years later. All the pronouns are "you" -- she is talking to him. The Peter losing Wendy line alludes to Peter Pan, at the end of the fairytale. At the end of the video, the cardigan she puts on (because she is cold from the memory) is too big for her ---- it is HIS sweater. The video shows her emotional stages during the relationship; the pixie dust is the magic (love), and she follows it. At the end, he is back at her front door. (And, she takes him back, because she is talking to him.) FWIW, while visually Willow follows almost immediately from this video, it also draws strongly from the song "Invisible String" which is also on folklore. Unlike this, Invisible String is genuinely autobiographical.
I know people are saying react to the live version of Betty. But I think you should react to the normal lyric video of Betty. And then you can always go back and listen/react to the live one later. I think people always appreciate the live version more when they know the studio version first. Edit: Never mind, just saw the comment on the Champagne Problems video😅
I really love the song, it’s really sad and emotional!! Also I would like to ask you if you could react to the cover of River (Bishop Briggs) by Daneliya Tuleshova sometime, she is really good and I think you would enjoy it :)
Putting someone on can mean lied to them. So “put me on like an old cardigan, said I was your favorite” is basically the guy lying and that he does it a lot. It’s easy for him to do.
Yes through the dark was blocked just a few minutes after uploading. It was shadow blocked because everything on my end said it was cleared and visible but no views every showed up and no one could see it or search it. So I had to put it up on my patreon.
Your interpretation is a bit eh because you didn't get the lyrics quite right. She says people think when we are young, we know nothing (immature). But then she finishes by saying that she knew everything when she was young because she could see every step of the way how this guy would make her feel ultimately. But this based only for cardigan as a solo, when you know the full trilogy the meaning will expand a bit.
Cardigan is an absolute masterpiece. This is from her album folklore. This is supposed to be a love triangle. Cardigan is Betty's POV, Betty is James's POV and August is the other girl's POV. I would really love for you to react to the mashup of this song and falling. It was really good and i think you would love it.
I'd love to see a full Folklore album reaction tbh because I want to see your first thoughts to all of the songs. :)
Hey you released this on my birthday! Love this song so much
Happy Birthday!
@@SuffiReax thank you!
I love your videos.
You need to react to all Reputation or Red and the trilogy of Cardigan, Betty and August. Great video, being a fan of you
Yeah. You've got it quite right.
this song is a masterpiece and Taylor is the best songwriter of this generation
Please do more Taylor songs🙏🏼🙏🏼
I really, really like you being willing to delve into her lyrics and work it out as you go. I'm very impressed. So not like most people. Also- you might consider keeping the lyrics in front of you on your phone, on Genius or something, while you watch the videos, so you have them right there. Great reaction! Could you do "Mad Woman- Long Pond Sessions", please?- SDK
"You put me on and said I was your favorite." = You lied to me and told me you cared. To put someone on means to lie to them.
Cardigan & Willow = chef kiss 💕
hey! suggestion for ya: i really love your thought process and how you analyze the lyrics, but on first listen i know it’s hard to remember all the lyrics. maybe after you finish listening to the music and watching the video you could pull up genius lyrics and use that to help you with your explanations! plus there are often some quotes from the artist about the meaning of the song that you can read about, if you choose to!
You should check out "Motion Sickness" by Phoebe Bridgers if you like relationship metaphors
Do folklore and evermore album reaction

May I recommend listening to the "Long Pond Studio" versions. So good. Listen for your our entertainment
Definitely listen to August and Betty to get the full story! Great reaction
Oohhhhh I'm earlyyyy
please react to more songs from her album folklore and her album evermore! :) there are lyrics videos online!
Unlike this, Invisible String is genuinely autobiographical.
you should react to betty and august next !
More taylor swift reaction
I really love the song, it’s really sad and emotional!!
Also I would like to ask you if you could react to the cover of River (Bishop Briggs) by Daneliya Tuleshova sometime, she is really good and I think you would enjoy it :)
Can you react to ‘Cardigan Falling | Mashup Taylor Swift, Harry Styles’? Is a mashup of the two music videos…
Cardigan, august, betty then willow
we have to remember that the cardigan is under the bed sir but somehow it was his favourite
You drew stars around my scars but now I’m bleeding means you gave everything and took back everything plus more from me (not my idea)
Plz react to falling and cardigan mashup 🙏🏻
Please react to the trilogy! You'll understand all three songs so much better.
Cardigan
August
Betty
Betty!!!
Please do long live by Taylor swift too!!!
Wooo! Hello everyone! How are you all?
💛
Please listen to Peace!! It's beautiful!!!
Next August pls
react to the whole folklore and evermore album, plss.
To understand Cardigan, then you should listen to the entire trilogy of love, I mean: Cardigan, Betty and August
Putting someone on can mean lied to them. So “put me on like an old cardigan, said I was your favorite” is basically the guy lying and that he does it a lot. It’s easy for him to do.
Is Through the dark by one direction still blocked? I've been waiting for it :(
Oof I was able to watch it, but I went back to look for it and I can't find it in the 1D playlist
Yes through the dark was blocked just a few minutes after uploading. It was shadow blocked because everything on my end said it was cleared and visible but no views every showed up and no one could see it or search it. So I had to put it up on my patreon.
Can you react to Falling × Cardigan mashup? it's so good
It would be cool if you react to the álbum Ashlyn by Ashe, or maybe some songs from her
Heey, react to Little Mix - confetti. Its sooo good
Hi, im ur new viewer/subscriber please do react to taylor's Forever Winter (Taylor's Version) (from the vault)
Please can you do reactions to Melanie Martinez songs! Please start with "dollhouse"
React to folklore and evermore
Your interpretation is a bit eh because you didn't get the lyrics quite right.
She says people think when we are young, we know nothing (immature). But then she finishes by saying that she knew everything when she was young because she could see every step of the way how this guy would make her feel ultimately. But this based only for cardigan as a solo, when you know the full trilogy the meaning will expand a bit.
Plz react to tightrope by zayn
And sweat too
You should listen to betty next. It's about the other person's perspective
PLEASE do anything by Ninja Sex Party. My favorites: "Danny Don't You Know" or "6969".
Otherwise, I would also love to see you do something by NF!
You should react to the mash up with falling from Harry styles
