- Glenn Goins Swing on Down
Summertime tribute
for Bobbie Pettiford & Ka'sette Goins
Happy Heavenly Birthday Glenn Lamont Goins
January 2, 1954 - July 29, 1978
Born and raised in Plainfield, New Jersey in a family of talented musicians, this master vocalist with the strong, haunting and powerful gospel voice is perhaps best known for “calling in the Mothership” in the P Funk live shows, such as on the renowned P Funk Earth Tour.
Goins was particularly prominent on the Parliament albums Mothership Connection (1975), The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein (1976), and Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome (1977), and played on the Funkadelic albums of this period as well.
In 1977, Goins was one of the first of many musicians to leave Parliament-Funkadelic in reaction to what was perceived as very bad management by band leader George Clinton. He formed his own funk band Quazar in 1978, featuring his younger brother Kevin Goins and drummer Jerome “Bigfoot” Brailey.
Glen Goins died from Hodgkin’s lymphoma, aged 24, in 1978
'Summertime by Glenn Goins'.......This song was and still is a Glenn Goins orginal it is not a Quazar song nor was ever meant to be,.Glenn was going to have his own album of his own flavor after Quazar which was his youngest brother's group.
Thank you Donna Snead 'A Toast to the BOOGIE'.
Peace, Love & Respect 'P'. Спорт
One of the best things.george did was make glen the lead singer
RIP COUSIN!!!!!! I AM STILL FUNKIN FOR YOU,THANK YOU FOR BUYING ME MY FIRST GUITAR AT THE AGE OF 9
Your cousin was a special dude. One Love
January 2 should be a holiday!
Beautiful powerful song so touching and such great inspiration. Glen.was like an awakening of the heart and mind beautiful soul sent from God to give the masses a little dose of what life is. Means to give as much as u can for duty of mankind in a short space of time, and he did! Rest in eternal peace till God returns and we hopefully meet with u again. Much love to the memory of Glen and his entire family and extended ones as well.
We love your cousin bro. His music lives forever.
One of the greatest to ever do it. I mean ever.
RIP I had the privilege of catching them live a true loss ⚘️
When I first bought my first parliament album I thought George was singing lol found out later it was Glen
Bernie Worrel, Maceo Parker, Glenn Goins, Eddie Hazel...this music really helped us to, "Dance our way outta our afflictions."
One nattion under a grove
And our Constrictions
We had a club called Mavericks Flat on Crenshaw, in L.A. .Many of the groups played there in the early mid-70s, before they became big. Pfuunk was great, but the one thing I never forgot was seeing Gary Shider in that diaper (hotel towel)! I had never seen anything like that before. Lol
They stole my diaper and put me in the nose zone and I've been here every since
I wish I could get A time machine and see this in person
No doubt *Glenn was the man who bring The Black Church to the Mothership* . What a Deep singer.
Insane
One of the greatest singers I've ever heard in my life
he would've been 64-years-old this year. rest in p-funk glenn goins.
One of the greatest SOUL voices of our time. Glenn Goins had a voice like no one else. RIP Brother Glenn
Between Glen Goins and Eddie Hazel ... both headline talents themselves hidden in all that funk.
Cordell Senior so true
truth
Mel Phillips C'mon man....
Can u imagine Hendrix, Hazel , Goins AND Bootsy?? 💥🤯
mrs planetmaster9 why post something like this?
We need Glenn's voice right now
Hands down the best singer p-funk ever had!!!!
George Moore No question...without a doubt.
Him and Philippe Wynn
Antwain Williams philleppe wynn was great especially on knee deep and uncle jam. But Glenn had a divine touch from God on his voice for real he had it at early age he was special !!
@@georgemoore5414 Absolutely,, Glenn was a special special dude
Glenn is my number one and Garry is my number two.
There was nothing then or is there
anything now that can touch a Parliament Funkadelic concert.
Glenn's performances give me chills. One of the greatest singers ever, and his calling of the mothership in houston 1976 proves this.
Yes lord preach
Yeah in NewYork too!!!
On parliament live
He said “ l can’t hear you OAKLAND…… Do you want to ride”
@@ejtaylor27 Yes, they used the Oakland recording on the Earth Tour album but they also filmed (as well as recorded) in Houston on Halloween 1976. They also released that recording later and it's that performance (of Swing Down, Sweet Chariot) that you see all over RUclips (and at 8:30 in this video).
AFTER GLENN GOINS AND JEROME BRAILEY LEFT IT WAS NEVER THE SAME FUNKADELIC WAS ALWAYS THAT BAND BUT THOSE TWO BROTHERS HELPED TO TAKE THEM WHERE THEY WERE SUPPOSE TO GO.
The FUNKIEST group in history hands down! At their peak no one else came close!!!
For all of those youngster's if you haven't seen this band, GO SEE THEM. Great Live Band. Nice, but nothing like the old days ❤❤
My 11th grade math teacher was Glen Gions uncle. Thank you Mr Peterson for allowing us to also learn about Parliament Funkadelic. R.I.P Glen Goins, R.I.P Mr Cecil Peterson.
the amount of talent P Funk had was insane. rip Mr. Goins
The mothership connection and swing down wasn’t the same without gleen!!
He passed at 24 it made me so sad that day he was like family the whole Funk Mob is my family. Make mine the P 😎
Glenn was only 24 in 1978 when he passed such a sad loss to his family and fans I’m one yes a great guitarist and singer I’m sure he made it to the Mothership swing down sweet chariot swing down 💥💥
Do you know what was the Cause of his death?
@@julesross240 lymph nodes that's what he died of🙁
The good die young!
I'm proud to be black!!!!
Wow, Ditto!!!
So am i👍🏾
I Feel you @kevin_Green but we are so much more than "black." We are a People with connections to the Most High from which that which we call the funk, soul, rhythm and blues, and all things known and unknown of us and by us flows. What people do you know can do like we do,... And this while still undergoing oppression.
That is unless you believe we have arrived at our final destined nation.
@@anotherpointofview222 preeeeeach!!!!
Sondra Vickers we were created so we can be crufied. And when they "bring" us "to heal," or "neutralize" us or get "rid of" us they will have "burnt" their "bridge" or "stairway" to that Aaron Spelling sized mansion in the Kingdom of Love and Truth which we have heard of... I figure..........
Glenn was the best singer PFunk ever had. And no one else even comes close..... Not to mention his guitar playing was on another level.
AMEN 🙏🏽🙌🏽
That's actually not factually correct. Fuzzy was another excellent vocalist on par with Glenn.
Amen to that!
How are y"all sleeping on Garry Shider? His live Cosmic Slop with Fuzzy is an EPIC ICONIC CLASSIC. 🎤🎸🔥💛
and George fired him
I've always been a fan of Parliament / Funkadelic and Glenn was the best singer they've ever had in the group . Gone way too soon🎵🎶🎸
Glenn Goins was the heart & soul of Parliament, the Mothership called him home at the young age of 24. I'm Still Funk’n with QUAZAR the album produced and arranged by him. God allows us to experience the the best of his creations for a short time. Rest In Parliament (R.I.P)🎸👍❤
He rarely gets the credit for his great guitar playing!
amen to that
His voice too!
Sondra Vickers Everything was definitely on the one back then, Miss Sondra!
So true, whenever I can really pick his guitar up from the P.Funk wall, he's *exquisite*, and his rhythm is perfect ... The Houston 1977 gig featured here as well is the obvious example. Glenn truly was the King (or Prince) of Pop that wasn't.
He really doesnt get the credit he deserves
Glenn Goins was one of the greatest guitarists/ singer musician in the music industry. RIGHT ON.
I loved Glen for a long time from a far. He had one of the best voice ever. He was the Sam Cooke of the funk. To me Parliment was not the same when he left. Glen brought that right flavor to the taste. Such a beautiful Black man in and out. Just wish he could have to live to be fulfill his musical talent.
One of tha MOST UNDERRATED Voices in Music. FUNK Forward Glenn
Glenn goins was the greatest vocalist ever, he sounded like he came right out of the choir in church, it was a truly spiritual happening when he called down the mothership 🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿
AMEN 🙏🏽🙌🏽💯
what a voice
When this man started calling for the Mothership, you felt it WAAAAAAAY DOWN DEEP. He gets you SO DAMN PUMPED UP and when he gives you that gospel scream....IT'S ALL OVER!! Rest In Peace Glen Goins!!!
Facts! 🤘🎸💯🙌
Glenn was my absolute favorite member of the funk mob…that voice!
Dude was BADD…real BADD!!!
Gone way too soon…
R.I.P.🙏🏽
Left this world to soon. I remember bis passing.
brother Glenn singing style always reminded me of Mahalia Jackson
Voice straight from church, guitar skills straight from Rock & Roll Heaven, and probably the only P-Funker who smoked more reefer than George...
Hands down this brother was talented, he had the voice and the talent of the ancient black ancestors, only the gods come down for a moment in time and everyone is drawn to the sounds of their voice,r.p brother
There is an urgency in his singing that make’s you believe there is redemption in P-Funk.
True !
Low key envy my parents’ generation for being able to experience music and talent at this level. It’s as if Black folks were somewhat free in the ‘70s.
We were getting there, and they saw it and decided to start putting a cap on it. MUSIC was powerful in the 70's and they knew it. They headed off another black wal-street uprising. They just can't stand us having a good time and rising up and becoming INDEPENDENT !!!

I was a child in the 70's and my brother bought a George Clinton album in our house and I was never the same. I studied those albums like books. They were stars in my world. I don't they realized what enjoyment and knowledge they bought to me in the Living Room. Every one on stage had a place and time of greatness. Glenn I never been more inspired by a voice like yours. I know it came from the soul of your being. I wish I could have seen you live. I love listening to you. You blessed the band and sings like me. The band was never the same without you! Love to you family. ❤ l've said too much!
Oops I didn't me sounds like me. No one sounded like you. Your voice makes me happy 😊.
Ka"sette talking about your dad is like talking about NBA or NFL legend! He was well loved by his fans. He has always been an inspiration in my life! I have 2 daughters 25 and 19. They both know about Glenn Goins. Their favorite songs are Fantasy is Reality and Funkin for Fun! He was truly special!
Only a few singers make you feel like your on spiritual journey :) .... Glenn was one ....
This was one of the best performers of the Parliment Funkadelic. He passed while I was in the service, but I would always look for this brother when I saw their shows. He had a strong and soulful voice calling for the Coming of the Mothership. I am glad to have come across this display of the Great Glenn Goins.
The soul of a magnificent guitar player and soulful singer!
Amen thanks be to God for his gift to us ..glen was more than just a man with a powerful sweet melodic voice, he really was the heart and soul that carried the funkadelics and I know another special being like him will never come again. But I do hope in another life we will have the special gift of being in his company again. Glen Love ur spirit..may ur soul continue to sleep in the busom of the Lord.
This guy had something. Too short.
Really strong voice! And that guitar was really funky!! I always listened Eddie as the best guitar but....:)
Brotha Muhammad,we say in Ifa: Aye l'oja, Orun Onile [The Earth is the Marketplace, Heaven is our home]. May my fellow Melungeon Brotha' rest in perfect peace, the Mothership did arrive and took.him to that Other World. A salute Brotha' Muhammad from one service member to another,Army of ONE........
My god father
One love
There will never be another Glenn Goins...Fly own !!!!!
with no exaggeration.. he's one of my all time favorite singers.. should have been a mega star.. but died tragically way to young.. Glenn is my church. every Sunday I play him singing this song.. ( there are many different recordings.. all fantastic)
Love the Voice his and the Guitar. I wanna Riiiide!!
One of the all time greatest voices
That guitar at the start, and the first singing he does is epic, I wish there was a more studio version of this simply for quality and length reasons.... And I absolutely adore the summertime track at the end, such a shame he beamed up to the mothership so soon...
DITTO!!!!
I totally agree with you on everything you said. I couldn't have said it better.
I thought I was the only one thought the same about this video
Yeah that Summertime tune was a stone hit had it been released. SWINGIN horns n even a muted Glenn is great vocally.
His voice literally gits under my skin and always makes my cry.
His shit cuts right to yo soul.
So too the late great Belita Woods as well.
My good friend loved this song. Went to his homegoing services today. And his children sung this song. And then when his casket was rolled out.they played this. RIH SWEET ANGEL. FLY HIGH SWEET ANGEL. BIG TY.... LOVE U AND MISS U ALREADY....
Angelic voice, just beautiful
The VOICE!!! Play that thang mane...🤘🤘🤘
We still love Glen Goins to this day...!!!🤟🏽
This dude was one talented brother. Would've been really interesting to had saw him still alive today and performing. Had that voice that took you to church.
Glenn Goins, One of the best to ever do it. This brother contributed so much to Parliament/Funkadelic. RIP.
Man!!!! Glenn Goins was the SHIT!!! I know we all have to go but he was gone way to soon.. love the page wish there was more..
Glenn Goins was one of P--Funk was a very good singer on swing down sweet chariot let me ride was Glenn thing. I miss him myself. A pure P--Funk all star forever.
Baddest man to ever pick ☝ ,a. guitar .
AMEN!!
He brought the church to the "P" when he sang. His gospel-like vocals would take you to church and then baptized you in the funk.I really believe if he held a church service and ask to anyone join the church, he would have some followers. He was the herald of the mighty Mothership.
Shakespeare0423 glen the best that every did it keep on funkin
... If gospel music sounded like this..
Yes indeed his vocals brought tremendous power RIP brother
I believe that the Motherships Comming!! Do you believe?!! Swing down sweet chariot and let me ride!!
Shakespeare0423 this is. on the. one
Glenn was the teddy Pendergrass of p funk
i think they are comparing teddy to glen, because when teddy was with Harold Melvin and the bluenotes he did all the singing just like Glenn sung most of the songs and not George, but the band name is George Clinton punk band
Agreed!
@@niggastilllyin4290 George never used his own name for the band until the 80's - after Glenn died. They were the Parliaments back in the 60's, Parliament-Funkadelic in the 70's and George Clinton and the P-Funk All Stars in the 80's and beyond.
Great composer, singer and musician. Well rounded!
This is making me teary man.
Me as well bro...touches your heart when he sings....T
Me to
Yes! I wanna ride!
🤧
Can't be duplicated .R.I.P Glen
Get that shit Glenn! goddamn i wish you were still with us brother! :(
The LATE GREAT AMAZING GIFTED AND TALENTED AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER GLENN GOINS!!! There you have it folks. THE VERY BEST
OF THE BEST!!! It can't get any better than this !! I know I saw him bring in the mothership in Houston. I just hate that at the time, I was too young to realize how AMAZING, GIFTED and TALENTED this young brother was.
R.I.P. my brother. Oh yeah I'm loving that Summertime cut.
Glen left us way too soon God is the master and knows best.RIP Glen!!!!!
The word is ridiculously overused these days, but Glenn was truly amazing. His voice spoke of a being from another world. It was simply too rich, too wise, too soulful, and too moving for someone so young. Paired with his guitar playing and energy, and he really did appear to be an extraterrestrial brotha! I am grateful he landed on the mothership and shared his gifts with us while he stopped by Earth.
Kamilah Cummings Don't Forget Gary Shider, good guitar player too, but a voice completely underrated. Lot of nuances in his voice.
Glenn Gloins true preacher in his way of singing.
fuk yeah homie !
But @Kamilah why everything got to be extraterrestrial, is it that hard to believe we as a people formed of the Earth, born of earthly mothers and father's are not capable of divinity. Just tired of the almost religious unbelief in the idea that what's inside us already is connected and capable of manifesting the attributes of what's above.
Free your Mind and your assistance will follow.
THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS WITHIN.
He had a beautiful voice as well!
@@anotherpointofview222 One Love
Im only 34 so I never got to hear him live or anything. My dad is the biggest pfunk fan I know. He only has 2 tattoos and theyre on his forearms. One says parliament and the other is funkadelic. So p funk runs thick in my veins. That being said him calling on the mother ship still to this day gives me chills
Glen was the Conductor for the Mothership...
Because his voice is incredible, people aren't aware of his guitar. Such perfect sad rhythm guitar. What a talent.
+
Very true his voice was just like he stepped out of the church. His voice was so good and his guitar playing was so great 👍.
Glenn Goins voice was second to none Forever Young RIP 🙏🏿 BROTHER YOUR TALENTS ARE TRULY MISSED 👏🏿👏🏿👊🏿✊🏿
Had he lived longer,Quazar would have been one of the baddest bands ever, young man was a musical genius, feel fortunate to have seen him live.
If you didn't feel like he was singing directly to you, then you still haven't enjoyed the music yet
I really enjoy listening to Glen his voice wow
The good times don't stick around long enough 🎈🎈🎈
I know his son Ka’ settee Goins. He’s a super talented musician (producer) as well. Like his father.
Where is his son id love to meet him tell him how much his father influenced me. Glen was simply a soulful angel that God let us borrow for a few years.
Michael Autry
Sorry. I just saw this. Would you like for me try to get in touch with him. He moved to Fla. I’m sure his # is still the same.
Most High works in mysterious ways
whenuknow uno truly???
whenuknow uno oops! 😬
Voice way ahead of his time. Gone way too soon. Rip GG❤️
Glenn brought that spiritual element to the funk that took you to that place deep inside your soul where the true meaning of funk comes from. His voice made you stand up and pay attention to what he had to say and believe in it.
This brother sang it like he was a sanctified church deacon! R.I.H...
Yes lawd he sho did
e37a Na Ma he sang for the funk of it. One love 😁
Maybe that's where the Good Lord wanted his talent. He knew, I heard him quoting scripture in this clip. When he sang, "when the mothership comes there will be no second coming" was a pretty radical statement. I picked up on it. Just my OG opinion.
Glenn Goins left us too soon .
Glenn Goins and Eddie Hazel. Gems. Just right there, hidden in plain sight . Rest in Peace Glenn.
Simply amazing
However, he would always be my number one man. That brother was the heat of the band. All of them were great but his voice was like a Funk Magnet, it pulled you all into the mothership even if you did not want to ride. I love you Black Man!!
Glenn Goins had a voice that took you to church and made the hair stand up on your head.
I feel something in my heart when I hear Glen sing and play. It's like I feel like he is a part of me. Funky. RIP BRO
Glenn had the gift of spirit, which he channeled effortlessly that left all onlookers connected to the divine.
Raw inspiration. Respect
C M true... This man, the most haunting voice I've ever heard.
Great words!
Glen Goins is the voice that called us to the Mothership. 2021 and we still ridin'... XOXO
Beautiful voice straight from the creator. ⚘
Parliament\Funkadelic legendary company of talent.Highly missed.
I said it all along, glen was the best funk singer in pfunk. I loved his funky voice. Miss you big brother.
His guitar riff is so, so soulful and voice too
One of a kind. Awesome singer and a bad ass guitar player too. Greatness being displayed. They didn't sound the same after he passed. This band invented funk and acid rock. Awesome music....T
0ne of the best singer in the world !!
glenn take us to church.....funk on in 2018
...
Glenn you did your. thing rest in peace baby you make me happy☺💗💖💓❤💛💕🐦
Greatest. Band. Ever.
Gary Goins and Gary Shider ... 3 of the greatest voices and musicians to ever grace this planet. Parliament/Funkadelic has some of the most gifted voices and musicians.
Damn!!! What a voice...R.I.P. MY brother...
There will never be another Glenn.
LORD.....HAVE....MERCY!!!!!!!!!!! And a WHOLE LOT OF IT...amen...🙏🙏🙏...
Hands down, Glen Goins was the best male vocalist ever. Good lord, between his ridiculous pipes, Eddie Hazel's and Michael Hampton's guitar skills, Bootsy's bass, Bernie's keyboarding, Tiki Fulwood's drums, and Gary Shider, this band was ridiculously talented. Too bad half of them are dead.
No words just tears
SuperThumpasaurus I found a truth. He is One Of The Voices... He is The Voice arguably..........
Y'all just be talking. Mike Hampton was a garbage guitar player. His solos were the worst, he only sounded good when he was playing Eddie Hazel solos not for note.
Lots of great bassists and drummers who never got recognized.
I bet at least half of the recordings that you think were Bootsy were actually Cordell "Boogie" Mosson. And a lot of the really crazy buttery bass lines from the late 70's (and later) were Rodney "Skeet" Curtis. On drums, Tyrone Lampkin, Jerome Brailey and Dennis Chambers were all pretty killer also.
@@dawudabdullaah7314 I hate to agree with you but a lot of Michael's early guitar work with the band is pretty sloppy, it's true. But he did improve a lot over the years. I saw him a lot in the 90's and he was definitely keeping his end up. Cool guy, too.
Me and Glenn were the same age and I was sad to see that he had passed, I will miss him and his music. R.I.P. Glenn.
