BACK TO BLACK Movie Review | Amy Winehouse | Marisa Abela | Jack O'Connell

- The tragic, too-short life of the wildly talented Amy Winehouse gets the sanitized biopic treatment in "Back to Black." Marisa Abela gives a knockout performance and impressively does her own singing as the Grammy winner, who died of alcohol poisoning in 2011 at age 27. But the people in Winehouse's life who helped lead her down that tragic path get absolution in director Sam Taylor-Johnson's film. Written by Matt Greenhalgh, who also co-wrote Taylor-Johnson's John Lennon biopic "Nowhere Boy." Co-starring Jack O'Connell, Eddie Marsan and Lesley Manville. In theaters now.

More of Christy’s British accent, for fun 😆.
It is shockingly authentic, is it not? :)
Hey now, Rocketman was great!
It was Ok, not great
no it wasnt lol
Can’t believe they made this. Amy deserved better
Amy got wronged again by her dad and husband. Shame.
I've been waiting for your comment. Thank God I found it. Amen.
ROCKETMAN WAS A GREAT FILM‼️‼️‼️
I agree. Don’t lump that in with Bohemian Rhapsody
@@MattB0610 👍🌷✌️👏👏
no it wasnt
@@tB-zq2db who gives a rats ass what you think..who asked you 🤡
The trailer said it “No Nooo NO”
It's pretty rare that I find myself agreeing with every single critique of a film review, but you two hit all the key points that I thought of.
Marisa Abela is great as Amy Winehouse. But the rest of the hagiography, not so much. It's got some nice scenes here and there, but this film is mostly fluff.
And one more confusing thing! Was the barfing in the bathroom scene meant to hint at Amy's well-documented bulimia? Or was she just sick after drinking too much one night? Who knows!
We see her coming out of the bathroom a couple of times to suggest bulimia, but it also might be inebriation ...? Lots of questions. Thanks for watching!
That was a pinned on scene, an afterthought. S u c h t r a s h
Phoney is the perfect word for it! I have been dreading this - the promotions have been so thuddingly out touch with reality in presenting the movie's themes ("I ain't no Spice Girl" "That's my daughter!") I fall into a rage every time I hear them. Mitch Winehouse is right at the top of worst celebrity parent leeches - it's right in the song that he talked her our of rehab!
In a time when pop culture only wants to reform pop princesses who were perfect victims there should be space for a look into someone who life was far more complicated and messy but capable of genuine talent. Amy Winehouse deserved so much more and now on top of everything else she's gotten the 'Bohemian Rhapsody' treatment, so infuriating
I appreciate the nuanced convo about this film acknowledging the flaws while also addressing the solid performance & costume design
Thank you for watching and for the kind words!
These are the reviews that keep me coming back 😂 y'all are the best ❤️
I don't like that the ads on TV are of Amy dissing the Spice Girls. I'm not a SG fan, but it seems strange that in promoting a movie about a female singer, they have to have her tear down other female singers. And not to be cruel, but the Spice Girls are still alive, so having Amy be so disdainful of them makes her look even worse.
Saw it in sneak this week. I loved the doc and left this thinking I must have misremembered the doc because of the differences I thought I'd just seen. I did leave happy though when I saw the credits listing her as the singer. I did figure the family had to be involved though once I started questioning it all. I remember saying about the doc that it should be required viewing for anyone wanting to get into the public eye and showbiz. I'll rewatch it now and get pissed!
Ha, let us know how your rewatch goes, Bob!
It's very hard to get warts and all in a biopic of someone who is beloved and deceased.
Interesting take about biopics being "estate sanctioned" as @commandZee succinctly put it being a bad sign. I must note that *not* having the family sign off on a film can also be a bad sign. The Aaliyah movie comes to mind(granted it's a Lifetime film so take with that what you will but still). For those unaware this movie about a popular female singer who also died young, was produced by Wendy Williams and Zendaya was supposed to start in it but she backed out. The family didn't approve and if you've seen it you could see why.
It's definitely missing a lot of context. You have to know the story and be an Amy Winehouse fan to fill in the gaps.
Whyyyyy……
This is sad to hear. The doc is sooo good. STJ, what are ya doing???💔
The movie made $6 Million plus in the US. And it has made $47 Million plus worldwide. Go figure!!
We have very good documentaries, a moratorium on music biopics pls :) Still have the Michael Jackson, Dylan, Sinatra, Springsteen & entire Beatles Cinematic Universe to come, God help us :)
I heard that the Bee Gees one is being developed
I wouldn't mind a biopic on the Rolling Stones though
The Michael Jackson one already came out - it's called "Leaving Neverland"
@@benwagner2000 There's also an MJ movie coming out next April directed by Antoine Fuqua starring Jaafar Jackson as MJ.
I disagree, I enjoyed this movie. The acting was outstanding, and the movie flowed very well. Still I appreciate your reviews.
Thanks Brent! Glad you enjoyed yourself more than we did.
I just didn't get it. She was okay, but she looked like she had fleas..she was an attractive young woman who let herself go. So what.
wow, that's a lot. Most people hesitate when taking a shot of Whiskey.... but hard drugs, yikes! That has to be a crime to just do that in a film released to people.
I just saw it last night with a friend. I really enjoyed it!
But, I will admit, i am not familiar with Amy Winehouse's life.
So, to hear there are chunks of truth missing in this film is disheartening.
Marisa Abela is FANTASTIC.
I'm going to watch the Amy documentary ASAP!
Bowdlerize is not a word I hear frequently in reviews. Nice one.
Alonso is a smarty!
Just saw it tonight, it’s not bad but good lord, her life was a mess with one bad decision after another. Not to knock on her but she’s a prime example of what NOT to be like, who cares if she won a Grammy.
it's not a bad movie it's just exactly what you think it is going to be and nothing more, the cast was fine though
It's weird because I never saw the documentary, which is obviously more true... but I also don't know much about her SO maybe an "acted" film would be good.... I'm in cause I like music movies anyways
The Voice is by all means not recreated in this film😅😂 the one scene in the studio that was released as a teaser. Uff🙃 what was that
Historical movies about real-life people or events have a long history of " lying" to you in one way or
another. Some such movies are good despite lying to you.
I saw the documentary and I liked it a lot. But I have no memory as to what part her father played in her story.
I do remember what the documentary had to say about her husband. And there are probably quite a few people who haven't seen the documentary.
I am more interested in how good the script and performance are, and how well the movie is done, despite the fact that the movie is lying in some ways. I am more interested in how closely the movie comes to capturing the gist and "spirit" of the true-life person and story
To learn the true story of someone is what documentaries are for. Scripted biopics with actors are often less than
totally honest. As our scripted movies about historical events..
And there is nothing new about historical movies portraying certain characters as better or worse than they were. For example, the movie "Cinderella Man" ( a movie well received by both the critics and the public) slandered Max Baer (the boxer Russell Crowe had his climatic fight with), big-time
As soon as I saw the trailer I knew this movie was going to suck
I had the opportunity to watch this movie for free yesterday and quite liked it. Since I had not seen the documentary I didn’t know that some of it was factually wrong. I did however see no issue with her saying no to hard drugs and later taking them. A lot of time had passed and it was very clear why she did it, it was not sudden at all. The sudden number one album also did not seem sudden at all, so the movie made sense to me. But I will now watch the documentary to get the truth about her father etc.
I wish they had done a movie like Spencer for Amy's story; to do a deep dive on her life during one particular period in time instead of trying to cover EVERYTHING and grasping nothing really
That's a really interesting idea!
I think they tried to be respectful but it just didn't come off well, they should've shown the impact of her music and the guilt Blake's felt.
Wait a minute that's her real voice. That's the actress's real voice? Wow
Right? It's impressive.
Exactly what I thought I wanted to see the black and how and what happened cause that just doesn't happen that fast to anyone so show what did..made by the people who killed her
The trailer tried to get me to see this movie, but I said, "No, no, no". I didn't buy Marisa Abela as Amy.
She was actually the best part of the movie, flaws and all. She didn’t sell me in the trailers but then when I saw it last night, I stopped seeing Marisa and started seeing Amy. Incredible
I am glad I don't waste my time with these biopics.
Not excited for *The Discourse* around that Michael Jackson biopic coming out next year.
Yeah, it's going to be a lot.
Imagine y'all gave this whole movie a thoroughly positive review from the perspective of, in the genre category of fantasy movies, this was a sweet and cute fairytale of make belief proportions. 🤣🤣
Don't you understand? She ain't no Spice Girl
Uh, Britney Speers with a black wig...
Wow, this is really disgusting. If there is any life lessons to gleam from her, it is red flags that come families… father and husband. Even in death, they are still mistreating her instead of admitting their mistakes. So sad.
I’m so glad you are discouraging people from seeing it. I approve this message…😂😂😂
Not only was the film disrespectful but so is your commentary.
Sorry to hear you feel that way, but thanks for watching.
Guess they skipped the Amy "You don't want none of this..." scene: ruclips.net/video/1Zcrb1ff1xs/видео.html&ab_channel=RyanKuba
Exactly. What this movie needed was more Tim Meadows.
I was totally waiting for someone to break into Tim Meadows for a second…”This is crack Amy and you want no part of this shit”
Tim Meadows would have made this movie much better.
I saw the movie . Your crazy;its great!
Uh oh, sad Christy. That's all I need to see
Yep, I'm totally tired of mediocre estate sanctioned biopics. These days my eyes start rolling as soon as I hear MCU, Star Wars, or rockstar biopic.
Agreed.
This movie was trash. Sam Taylor-Johnson is such a hack and she disrespected Amy's legacy and her country by making this movie. Watch my review and pitch for a better version of an Amy Winehouse biopic.
Was hoping this was a good one. Definitely going to skip!
I've never understood the appeal of the biopic. Most of them look like shit to me and stuff that could probably get explored better in a documentary. Not that there have never been "good biopics", there has been some of course, but for the most part I find them incredibly unappealing. Saw the trailer for this the other day and I honestly thought it was a comedy sketch. I thought it was a SNL bit where they made fun of music biopics rather than an actual movie.
Have you ever seen Coal Miner's Daughter, about Loretta Lynn? It's excellent, and the gold standard for the music biopic.
it's not supposed to be a docu-drama! is your problem that it isn't a documentary?? it's a fairy tale about a tortured, f*cked up, tragic love story! forest for the trees mate.
Knew this would be crap
Love my Shithouse Fridays
You guys gonna review IF? It was pretty bad
3.55....yikes. Don't see it😂
Rocketman sucked. Bohemian Rhapsody was Waaaay better
Christy you make for a fine Australian.
Really awful film!! Amy is and will always be the queen! ❤️
Too soon
it's been 13 years
Zero interest in Winehouse. I will be happy to avoid this one.
Good Lord, who would watch this 😞 So gross.
I don’t think the unhappy faces of you two work in the thumbnail pic works. Maybe if your faces were neutral?
But we’re not neutral on this movie. Thanks for the suggestion, though.
