I''ve pulled apart the 1750 for the barn find GTV to get it ready for a fresh build with a new head and new pistons + liners. Instagram @jethrojamesbronner
The first time i saw the nord alfa engine in 1967 i couldnt believe man could make such a beautiful efficient thing in such numbers when we in uk were still aresing around with cast iron pushrod three bearing junk ,god bless alfa
Not just the engines, of course; ever since I can remember looking at cars as lustful objects the Giulia has always been my ideal mildly boxy coupe body. I hope someday I can be lucky enough to own one; or perhaps a GTV.
and how much did that said Alfa cost in the UK?....Give me a break....an XJ6 was cheaper than any Alfa, had a miles better engine than any Alfa...what about the 12 Valve Triumph Dolomite? You are ignorant
Im a72 year old life long car enthusiast ( not a petrol head ) ive owned most makes and driven everything in my time .when im sitting quiet and remembering my cars and bikes its the italians that always come to mind ,As an engineer your not fooled by bullshit go faster stickon bits, its whats underneath the skin .my son loves his modern cars but after a blast in my alfetta gtv he hands me back the keys with a nod and a smile that only an alfa nut understands .
Aai, the memories of my youth, feeling my way through those Weber and Solex carbs, rebuilding those great engines on a limited (20 year old unemployed) budget. I still have the old workshop manuals, and every now and then come across an Alfa bolt or odd little part...the 2 litre engine I put into a '71 Giulia 1300TI, eish, the poor 3 litre Sierra I blew off with that car, and the driver's wife saying shame to him...memories! Thank you Jethro!
Thank you for keeping it simple and don't putting any music or trying to make it fancy. It needs nothing, it's awesome as is. I really admire you for your knowledge and overall style
I restored a 1978 Alfetta GTV 2.0 Strada between 98 and 2000 (YRY 557T) including bodywork and respray in original colour - Azuri Le Mans blue. It was a chalenge to say the least. I didn't have the problems you had with the engine, it was in good shape, but the gearbox was a nightmare. Heavy clutch, hopeless gearchange. Taking the clutch/ transmission unit in and out was a major headache. Hats off to you for such a good job on that gearbox of yours. An Alfa 75 transmission is a good alternative for the GTV, but I never got round to it. I sold the car about a year later but I wish I'd kept it now. There are only 3 GTV strada's in the UK at this time. The Strada variant had extras like electric sunroof, windows and aircon too, some had Marelli fuel injection.
Yeah those transaxle cars could have a real sloppy gearbox and clutch setup if they're aren't properly dialled in. The 105 series is way more simple, no gear linkage at all.
I drove a 2000 Alfa GTV 3.0 V6 during a recent trip to JNB - an original Busso Engine - the Car never handled very well and probably needed new Shocks and Springs. The Engine was great and the car is worth working on - SA Motor Corporation. Could be a good buy if you have the time and you have power & lights (sorry I had to put that in)
@@JethroBronner Nice - the Engine is worth the effort and is Reinforced Belt driven snd not chain driven like the GM Alfa Engine. The last of the Bussos!
I run a very similar channel all about the classic Mini Cooper and I wanted to drop a note and say I just found your channel and I love it. Great detailed content, very nice shots and love the subject matter. Thanks for making awesome videos! Looking forward to many more now that I'm subbed.
Everything coming apart so easily it makes me think he took it all apart, put it back together again and then disassembled it a second time for the video......honestly dude, I think your brilliant, great work
Damn Dude. Your videos are really good to watch, satisfying and all that. Keep it up, you will be big on RUclips shortly. You got a subscriber more. :)
I was told both the 1750 and 2L cranks are factory nitrided; it's just the 1600 and 1300 that were not. Alfa machine shop in Long Beach owner told me that, and also said if you are doing a 1600 you should get it nitrided after machining it.
I haven't looked into Alfa parts prices yet so that is good to know. I would say only rebuilding a Ferrari would cost more than the 911. Damn those bills hurt!
I remarked a few days ago in response to your Weber rebuild that I wasn't sure if you were a mechanical genius or not but that your were certainly skilled and talented. I would like to revise that statement: I'm sure you're a genius. I'm amazed at your talent, skill and organizational ability. How old are you, anyway? You're beginning to strike me as a new version of Leonardo.
Hey Jethro a few more weeks and mine will be finished after 2 and half years of work! It's interesting to see someone else who is approximately the same age as I am (25 by the way) who is also restoring old Alfa's. I'm working hard, in order to get it back on the street by beginning of august. I can share some pictures if you want. Greetings from Switzerland
I’m also 25! Yeah send me some photos of it, I’m always keen to see what other young people in the vintage car world are up to. I love Switzerland, I have some very good friends there and I always enjoying visiting.
Jethro Bronner happu to hear that! If you plan any visit let me know. You could try a Swiss Alfa on our beautiful mountain roads. How can I send you the pictures?
Thanks for posting. I do more work on my spider when you post videos! I do wish that I could have rebuilt my 86's engine; I elected to pay to have it done. I'm irritated all over again that he didn't weigh the flywheel after it was lightened, and I don't even know if he replaced the jugs or not. Not for sure...I'm assuming that he did. I went with the Motronic 10:1 pistons. I wanted him to use Hastings rings; he refused and used the kit's rings. This bothers me constantly, as the the engine that I did rebuild myself 13yrs ago is still around getting flogged in some guy's rally cross. But Alfa really got these engines right; they look beautiful, they sound amazing stock, and have more power per liter that my old BMW engines (stock). And if you do the work yourself, the parts are cheaper than BMW parts.
John McDonald Thanks for watching man. Yeah these engines are a pleasure to work on. I’m waiting for some parts from the UK to rebuild this one in the next couple of weeks. Can’t wait to get it back in the car.
modelleg Yeah I always go for OEM or NOS parts. Thankfully there are now a lot of aftermarket manufacturers who are also making some great stuff for these cars.
On an Alfa 105 engine you can unbolt the cams, and then there will be enough slack on the chain that you can pull it through by hand until you find the link. If that doesn’t work you can always cut the chain with an angle grinder?
do you find these 1960's blocks to twist? I've just rebuilt a series 1 1750 GTV engine and the machine shop had to re cut the crank journals as they were out of line due to the engine block flex... They say that the 2 liter tipo115 engine has a better aluminium alloy and are a lot less prone to this. Anyway, keep up the good work!
João Vale If they are badly overheated at some point then yes they tend to warp. I’ve had a 1600 that had to be line bored before as well. I’ve only had that issue once. The heads also warp like that too.
Jon Wagstaff Oh this engine never had one. It came in a crate along with the car but the flywheel and bolts were missing. I don’t have an 8 bolt hydraulic clutch flywheel around the workshop.
Ok Thanks - I have my 1991 Stock Uno Turbo lying in Storage in Cape Town with 75,000 km on the clock - it is a Mickey Mouse Engine but rides well - I hope to fix the clutch and replace the Front Tires. I was thinking about buying an Alfa 159 3.2 Q4 but the Engine is a GM Aussie derived unit.
Next episode... After months of promising "No more disassembly," Jethro surprises absolutely no one by tearing down both transmission and differential, and while sitting in front of yet another huge pile of unlabeled parts, he admits on RUclips he's having a laugh. "Hah, you idiots really thought I was going to get the Alfa running and driving again?," Jethro said doubled over in hysterical laughter. "The jokes on you. I haven't a clue where most of that shit goes, let alone how it works. "Those commenters are such fools. My generation is so much smarter than those old wrenchheads."
Jethro... how come no heart for me? You can laugh at yourself, can't you? It was meant to be "tongue in cheek" sarcasm us native New Yorkers are famous for that no one else in the world gets. And it has to ring a little true to be funny. "If you can't laugh at yourself, others will" - GH 2018

Harry New I’m still in awe that Alfa managed to build these engines when they did. They’re so ahead of their time and of such beautiful quality.
Not just the engines, of course; ever since I can remember looking at cars as lustful objects the Giulia has always been my ideal mildly boxy coupe body. I hope someday I can be lucky enough to own one; or perhaps a GTV.

I'm a full time mechanic, and watching ur videos reminds me that there is a good side of this job, just couldn't find it yet 😅
1:50 spotted a beautiful Seiko SKX007. Nice looking watch, I'm a Seiko fan too!
Thank you for keeping it simple and don't putting any music or trying to make it fancy. It needs nothing, it's awesome as is. I really admire you for your knowledge and overall style
The teardown was pure music for any motor junkie... You're a master!
Poetry in motion. Jethro, you really know your way around these engines! Makes my day to see another episode of this build. Keep up the good work!

Great stuff. I always look for new clips from you. Very inspiring
Nice work, always a good surprise to see another episode, JB.
Another great deconstruction video 😂👍🏼 can’t wait to see the build progress
Epic and you just keep getting better! Cheers from Chicago.
Big jigsaw puzzle that engine Jethro 🤣 Always great watching your videos 👍🏻

I've recently gotten one of those, a 1999 3.0 V6 and it needs lots of work, maybe even a full restoration.

The last of the Bussos!

This looks much better than the duetto engine with the stuck head.
I really enjoy your videos, keep them coming!
John Capidecallu Yeah it’s in much better shape. That Duetto engine has almost no usable parts in it, crank was toast, pistons wrecked etc etc.
Well done!Looking forward to re assembly!
Wish I had a garage like that! Nice video, thanks.
Everything coming apart so easily it makes me think he took it all apart, put it back together again and then disassembled it a second time for the video......honestly dude, I think your brilliant, great work
Great job. Loking forward for futher works. I hope that enginie will get second life ;) Keep going!

I’ve done a great job of disassembling my car too. Now need to put it back together...
Thanks for sharing! I am getting close to getting the 2 liter engine out of my '72 GTV 2000. Cheers from Seattle.
FooDoo6 Thanks for watching! I’m going to do a 2000 build on the channel soon. I want 2000 and a 4.1 diff in my Giulia
Jethro the deconstructing Alfa mechanic lol can’t wait to see it all come together eventually :)
Malcolm Scott Thanks man 👍
Omfg i flinched when you dropped the liner...
The crank looks like it has been balanced.

Very nicely filmed eddited!
great again. love it
Great stuff, I am scared of what I will find when I get into my engine. Look forward to watching your progress.
Home Built By Jeff Well, at least these Alfa engines are relatively cheap to rebuild completely, especially compared to a 911!
I haven't looked into Alfa parts prices yet so that is good to know. I would say only rebuilding a Ferrari would cost more than the 911. Damn those bills hurt!
Home Built By Jeff Well for the Alfas, a full piston and liner set from the OEM is £395. Can’t say that about a Ferrari.
Wow, that is very cheap! My 911 pistons and refinishing my clylinders was almost 10 times that!
I remarked a few days ago in response to your Weber rebuild that I wasn't sure if you were a mechanical genius or not but that your were certainly skilled and talented. Where’s the engine reassemble video. Great content 👍
Hi, if i want to lightened the flywheel, whats the maximum weight i can remove, to stay in safe side for 105 series 2000cc
How is this going? Would like to know more
Do factory Alfa Julia engines come balanced from the factory?
aaawww, I cant get mad at you ;)
Won't you need one new conrod for number 1 cylinder?
Question: How can I get the cylinder head off if the engine is seized and can't roll it over to find the master link in the timing chain?
On an Alfa 105 engine you can unbolt the cams, and then there will be enough slack on the chain that you can pull it through by hand until you find the link. If that doesn’t work you can always cut the chain with an angle grinder?
absolutely nice job!
I send me my gearbox, can you restore it?
Good vid! So how far from the original deadline you think it will actually take?
Aircooled I’m still a couple weeks out. I haven’t gotten my parts shipment into the country yet...

OK cheers. I assume that, like the UK, 8 bolt flywheels are cheaper and easier to find that 6 bolt!
Jon Wagstaff Well, The 6 bolt is for 2000 engines.
Yes, they're getting expensive and hard to find as people use them to convert Alfetta engines.
Where do your buy your bearings?

Pissed off dudes in the comments section........glad to say I am not one of those fad sucks LOL Nice work JB !!
Is the 1750 GTV Engine the same as the newer 1750 from the 159?
Apart from the displacement there really isn't any relation between the two engines.

Where did you get all your knowledge of mechanics, you seem to young to have as much expertise in engine overhauling and reassembly.
I've owned and driven these cars for a while now, and I think in order to drive them you need to know how to maintain them.
