  • Charlie Johnson and his family work together to operate Johnson Farms in Madison, S.D., where they grow organic row crops on 1,600 acres. Along with cultivation tools, like the rotary hoe the centerpiece of their weed control strategy is a six-year rotation of oats, alfalfa for two years, soybeans, corn and soybeans.
This video is part of a larger series highlighting the ecological weed management practices used on farms across the country: • Manage Weeds on Your Farm

How do you handle the insects damaging your alfalfa and corn?

I can't speak for the Johnson's, but on our 1000 acres of organic ground in IL insects are not a problem in our corn or alfalfa. Proper soil nutrition solved those issues.
