      I honestly think its to play off the catcher/pitcher watching him so he doesnt appear to be leaning toward 2nd too much before he goes. Also the extra motion will definitely be seen by the pitcher as they finish their motion. could cause an inaccurate throw that will help him.

    I noticed this when I went to a game earlier this year. Everyone around me says he going to steal after they walk Elly. He attempted on a foul ball, had to go back. Then immediately stole second on the next pitch, then third on the next. It’s crazy to me someone can do that in the highest level of baseball.

    We took a Texas 18U team to STL last week for a tourney and got a chance to see the Cards vs. Reds on 6/29/24. We saw Elly hit a triple, a double, and drew some walks. He also stole 3rd on a pitch and I'm telling you, if his feet hit the ground 6 times from his extended lead to his chest slide at 3rd, it was not 7 steps. I didn't realize how tall he is or how fast! Everyone says he's FAST but when he hit the triple we just watched him run the bases, in awe! That dude is the quickest, fastest base runner and TV does it NO justice! Red's won the game but we were just glad to get to a MLB game during our tourney and see some double plays, fly balls that almost left orbit, a 420ish ft HR to center, etc. Good day at Busch Stadium!

      @jess_ismore I mean, sure, but my point is it isn't the catcher or pitcher beating him. It's him beating himself by making a mistake. Like if Elly wants to steal 2nd, he's gonna steal 2nd best you can hope for is a mistake.

      @hlcepeda 6 месяцев назад +6

      I wonder if he does that to help maintain his balance as he violently launches himself forward. All other runners do that, but with the arms lowered and bent at the elbows. La Cruz may feel the need to really get those long arms way out there -- elbows not bent -- to shift their weights further away from his center-of-gravity (ref: 4:25) thereby helping him keep his balance during that initial thrust.

    • @jamesaaron7211
      @jamesaaron7211 6 месяцев назад +3

      He’s longer limbed than your average basestealer. There are different ways to get your arms and legs into the right leverage position and kind of throwing your arms out and then starting to lever once they are extended is one, the way he chooses. It has a lot to do with having to pivot to start, which is why most great base thiefs are more compact, because it’s only about pure speed for the last 2/3 of the play, but it starts with quickness and integration.
      Sprinting in track doesn’t require the same realignment, which is why longer limbed runners don’t pay as much of a price getting off.

    Dude! So grateful for your attention to detail in your breakdowns and analyses. Context is everything when it comes to stats, in my humble opinion, and the measured and well thought out approaches that you employ are truly a joy to experience. There is no bias. You seem to be be truly interested in presenting an unbiased presentation of the results of logical research. Thank you!

    “So, I checked Everytime over the last five years where he ran on a forgot handed pitcher in a night game, when the average temperature is under 83 degrees, and it had rained 1 to 2.5 inches in the last 72 hours. Combine that with the average attendance of the last 4 games in that stadium and divide it by a thousand. In that situation, I’m only looking at opportunities in which that average was 40. Then…”

    Baseball used to be players on 1st are always a potential threat to steal. Not all the time, but always the potential, and that makes the game fun. Unless you're known to be slow. Players in the past would have 15-30 steals a season. Now, unless you're a super speedster, and even then you'll only steal 30-50 times a year, you just don't run. Hope Cruz would break that cycle. Baseball used to be exciting from 1st to 9th, now it's just strikeouts and home runs.
