@0:25 those are used on doors with a lip to make sure they close in the correct order. If you opened both doors, it would block the one on the right from closing first.
As someone who's participated in many commercial building remodels all I can see is all the work that needs to be done. I hope whatever you have planned for this place works out.
That lever on the top of the door in the center allows the doors to close correctly when both are open. Its because the left door has that lip on it. If you open them both at the same time and then let them close, if the left one closes before the right one, it will stop and let the right one close first then the left.
Translation it holds the right side open until the left side is able to close. That "very secure door" is also a fire door the metal pads at the top would connect to a magnet on the wall keeping the door open until the fire alarm went off turning the magnet off therefore shutting the door. Odd they have a key card door lock on a fire door I was always under the impression it is illegal to modify a fire door in anyway. Also in the event of any emergency this door wouldnt be able to be opened.
At 0:35, the lever at the top of the door is common on fire doors. It is so one door closes before the other, allowing for proper overlap and seal of fire doors. Same goes for the magnets to hold them open that shut off with the fire alarm
Only just found this channel. Loving it already. Those useless looking levers above the doors are probably hold opens. When you ahve the left hand side of the door open, it'll hold the right door open until the left shuts. Lets you fling both doors open and let them auto close securely afterwards.
0:30 that thing above the door just ensures the fire doors close in the correct order when the magnetic door holders drop in the event of a fire alarm. if the wrong door starts closing first it'll hold it in place until the correct door swings the arm back up
That fire alarm setup at 1:15 is rather odd, a Gentex Commander retrofitted onto a vintage Space Age Electronics fire alarm. I remember once seeing something similar in person, that being a Simplex Truealert retrofitted onto a vintage Simplex 2903.
as someone who does building maintenance will say who ever does the maintenance here isnt good, look at all that damage (i play about it would love to see this place myself and offer hands lol)
that little roller stick above the door is to keep the right side open just enough for the left side to shut, which pushes the bar up and allows the right to close fully
Why all the mess still ?, and the junk ? Why it get a wheelbarrow and go round filling it - surely won’t take more than a couple of days to clear out the place completely, old curtains down etc. most things can be burnt to get rid of them, saves you costly skips.
As A fire alarm guy i find the single gang strobe mounted to a 1900 box mounted to what was probably a a speaker or horn very janky. I can tell you maybe why it was done. New System required with clear strobes but old system had to stay in service until new system was online. But lets be honest all low voltage work in places like this are always hodge podge. So you have an office there and are there regularly?
asbestos is only dangerous if you're breaking up something covered in it or made with it. I've worked in plenty of buildings over the years that had asbestos in floor tiles...we simply had to sign a waiver stating we knew it was there and that it didn't pose a risk unless damaged. The mold spores in the air are more of a threat in these scenarios where you're just walking around a building...when you start doing work is when you need to be wearing protective gear etc.
Looks like you got the older MC with the aluminum grounding conductor. That conductor was only used for continuing a ground through the outer flexible tubing. Every time you would strip the tubing back you would take that aluminum conductor and re-wrap it around the outside into one of the grooves and wrap it up the outside. Its purpose was to maintain a ground if the outer flexible tubing were to break apart between a and b. Yeah I see the mold, I bet the catch basins on the upper level outside could use one of those vacuum truck cleanings and all the drains outside of all those lower Windows probably the same, at least snaked and cleaned out. This probably a perimeter drain but judging by all the trees possibly full of roots but who knows. Maybe one of your upcoming videos can be about the drainage of and on the property, that would be cool to figure out where all the pipes are and where they're all running to I'm sure the rain run off comes out of the bank that the cooling tower and Generator set probably more so towards the sides of the building.
That fire alarm set up looks really goofy lol. Some sort of mechanical horn used to be behind that Spaceage light plate, but it was retrofitted with a Gentex Commander horn/speaker strobe.
I wonder if there are any vintage computers that were left behind when the building closed. It stinks that the basement area has gotten wet over the years and growing mold. Still a very interesting building!
I'll bet it was probably an evolution from antenna to cable or maybe satellite over time? Going by the system they used to have at my old development which was built in the 70s, if you looked in the "cable shack" it was sort of like a mummy's tomb of different broadcast tech from over the years. In one corner you could tell where they originally had a master antenna type of setup which was later abandoned then switched over to what looked like a cable TV setup ... which was then abandoned and completely replaced with a master satellite dish.
i do hope you guys have installed a noisy alarm system on all your doors with a siren outside. i would absolutely hate to see a video appear where some asshats broke in and stole wiring or other stuff. dont post a reply if you read this but do ensure you have that basic covered, ideally cover windows too with PIRS. it costs a little, but can prevent pain and a whole lot more cost asside of the pain.
I'd love a padded room for 24hr. Just give me a decent mat, a pillow and a blanket. It would be nice & quiet and I could get a decent amount of sleep. 🤣
Very interesting watching some of your videos. 1 just came up in my feed and I was like "why not, sounds interesting actually" and I normally don't watch videos like these cause most people are freaking stupid and whatnot. I'm also impressed ya'll bought the property...sure does look like a big old mess though of neglect. I find this stuff interesting cause I like to see the "how" of stuff was abandoned and what state it was left in afterwards. It can be interesting, weird or just outright confusing how some stuff was left.
love it, its the same type of niche content of liminal spaces that i like. i loved his video when he turned on all the breakers, it was fun watching him piece together the workings of the building + the creepy boiler/electrical room was very interesting
4:02 that is from the late 80s not vintage by any means it was the run of the mill stand alone smoke alarm that was not tied in to the buildings alarm system and would actualy go off if you boiled water:)
Would say if the fire alarm system works then try to maybe change bells or add some if it does not work would suggest geting a brand new fire alarm system
Hey man was trying to find an email or something was reaching out I'm from Ohio and around an hour from that place wanted to see if there was anyway I could get involved 😊
I was wondering the same thing....im not sure exactly where the building is at, but im in the youngstown area and would love to take a drive and check it out and attempt to help with what ever I can, I'm an electrician by trade but I know a little about everything
If he is going to tun this place into anything, he’s going to need a fire alarm system. He might want to reuse as many of the old devices as possible so he can save money.

Horn strobe setup looks like about 50 years worth of retrofits built on top of one another.
That lever on the top of the door in the center allows the doors to close correctly when both are open. Its because the left door has that lip on it. If you open them both at the same time and then let them close, if the left one closes before the right one, it will stop and let the right one close first then the left.
The device above the door is called a coordinator. It makes sure the fixed leaf is closed before the moving leaf of the door.
Translation it holds the right side open until the left side is able to close. Was going to comment the same thing, but you were faster
Please do a tour of the entire building. A multi hour deep dive!
That fire alarm setup at 1:15 is rather odd, a Gentex Commander retrofitted onto a vintage Space Age Electronics fire alarm. I remember once seeing something similar in person, that being a Simplex Truealert retrofitted onto a vintage Simplex 2903.
This world is so small i watch you vids sometimes 😂
As a fire alarm tech I ran into a few of those questionable retrofits
Use to be horn or bell
That fire alarm setup is insane hahaha. They literally strapped a new system ontop the old system
as someone who does building maintenance will say who ever does the maintenance here isnt good, look at all that damage (i play about it would love to see this place myself and offer hands lol)
Mom wake up, XeroZenith just uploaded.
Probably would be a good idea to locate the source of the water intrusion to minimize further damage...
Nothing is cooler than saying, yup, I own a creepy old phyc ward.
Great videos 👍🏼
The ladies are queuing up already…! 😉

What is your plan for the building?
He said he wanted to turn it into a kind of office building
@@FI-TECH-250 But it's in a really bad shape. Not sure how are they going to do it.

@@GamrokFeddy he said he hast gonna restore it, but im also on your side. idk how hes gonna pull it off
Does this place have working CCTV? I saw a dome camera in the corner at 15 seconds and was wondering if it had other CCTV.

He has been doing other things for the building.
that piece of padding is the same kind they use in school gymnasiums
It's a shame it suffered so much water damage. Still very cool!

I love that commander on top of a 4 square on top of... an AV 32 light plate?? WTF LMAO. I love your videos by the way.
yep, thats a pretty janky alarm retrofit. shame the original system isnt there anymore
It tecnicly is still the original system, but the panel along with the wires got ripped out by scrappers.
I don't know what you're doing or why here...but I totally approve.
He owns the building.
@@FI-TECH-250 I'm aware. Beyond that?
This feels like a trip through the backrooms.
The alarm setup is REALLY odd. Seems like they retrofitted a Gentex commander into what used to be a space age system.
You can put water in the toilets and stretch saran wrap over the bowl to keep them from drying out.
My biggest concern would be the possibility of being exposed to asbestos. 😬
asbestos is only dangerous if you're breaking up something covered in it or made with it. @ thank you for this. Mold is also very toxic.

Spaceage fire alarm strobe with a gentex horn over it is pretty interesting
You got a real steal on those nail clippers. You got a whole mental hospital thrown in for free with them
That fire alarm set up looks really goofy lol. Some sort of mechanical horn used to be behind that Spaceage light plate, but it was retrofitted with a Gentex Commander horn/speaker strobe.
maybe there could be a market for getting a fiber line ran in and offering cheap server colocation
Upper management time out room 😂😂
I wonder how you obtained such a property. those are typically sold for MILLIONS!!
I wonder if there are any vintage computers that were left behind when the building closed. It stinks that the basement area has gotten wet over the years and growing mold. Still a very interesting building!
Dude a Gentex Commander 2 on an old simplex light plate with a horn mount is weird as shit. haha 😂
9:28 that water heater might still actualy work depends on how rusted the tank inside is
If you could ever get that fire alarm systems working again I would love to see it
Does the building have a TV antenna?
I'll bet it was probably an evolution from antenna to cable or maybe satellite over time? 1:16 space age light plate with a gentex commander 3? That’s jank af
hay have you guys done a mold inspection
Don’t need to, it’s clearly moldy
4:33 you should do the lick test to see if there is any charge left
It's a shame most of the padding has gone.
It's funny to think that newer part was built the year I was born.
You should make a bit of this space into a hotel
But I’m unsure if there is demand in the area for that
Have you turned on the power in the whole building

in the fire alarm community, 1980s would certainly be considered vintage.
Very old Gentex fire alarm set up weird though

Part of it was removed, so it doesn’t work.
The main panel was gutted, so he'll have to replace it to get it to function again.
10:03 jokes on you, that has line probably still has pressure on it if the city doesn’t have it documented well enough
1:15 Honestly it looks stupid. They should've removed the AV-32 and install the Gentex Commander 1 directly to the box with a retrofit plate.
Bruh😂 A gentex commander retrofit on a retrofit lol! Never seen that before.
