"Yesterday when i got up i grabbed my coffee cup and the handle fell off, then I grabbed my briefcase and the handle fell off. I was afraid to go to the bathroom."- Rodney Dangerfield.
One of the great comedic geniuses of all time and master of the one liners. There will never be another Rodney Dangerfield!!
Rodney was the master of one liners, and self depreciating humor. He just goes rapid fire with his punchlines! May he RIP. A true comedy legend!
Can't wait to do more!
Comic one-liner genius. They don't make them like this any more.

Johnny Carson was pretty casual with his guests and it was almost like we were a part of the conversation.
"I know I'm getting old. My last birthday cake looked like a prairie fire." You know, lots of candles. It didn't take much to make us laugh in those days. Well, me, anyways. Thanks for a great video!
I think we were both confused on what exactly a "prairie fire" was because we'd never heard the term before.
@@barsandbarbells2022 Yeah, makes sense. What you hear on the news is "wildfire" most of the time, and you mostly hear about the ones in highly populated areas. But out in the rural areas, where there's grass that's dried up from drought conditions, if a spark (lightning, for instance) gets in there, and there's some wind, acres upon hundreds, or even thousands, of acres can burn like crazy. You do good figuring stuff out, though. You make a good show!! Thanks!!
@@barsandbarbells2022you know your getting old when the candles cost more than the cake...Bob Hope
Loved Rodney. His type of humor was truly one of a kind.
It's truly a unique style!
Rodney, the king of one liners and Johnny Carson, The King Of Late Night TV. Carson was that one must watch Tonight Show host between 1963 and 1993. I watched almost every night between 1972-76 during my highschool years.
Great show to hop in bed for and doze off to. I was a regular until he retired in 1993 after 30 years.
Carson was a legend !
Peace ❤
Johnny raised a generation, myself included.
Rodney is an old-school vaudeville-type comic. He does one-liners better than almost anyone. Rodney is one of the most prepared comics ever. Every joke was on a notecard and he had huge files full of notecards. He would gather and organize the cards for each show. He never did anything that wasn't thoroughly rehearsed. His standard schtick is "I get no respect" and he often builds from that.
Rodney's parents worked in vaudeville.
Much like George Carlin as far as rehearsing his act.
Johnny Carson, a very successful comedian himself, was always the perfect 'straightman' for Rodney. Some of the funniest parts are when Johnny's set-up didn't work or Rodney's reaction when a joke fell flat.
Rodney also owned a comedy club in NY, "Dangerfield's". There are/were many comedians that said they owed Rodney everything for giving them their 'big break'.
I was about to say that but you said it much better.
Saw many of these shows live. Yea, I'm an old guy. Glad to see a new generation appreciating the legend.
"There Goes The Neighborhood" is on his grave stone! He owned his own club in New York and gave many young comedians their start and was also in many movies. "No respect" was his catchphrase and entire comedic act, but it was just an act!
Yah, ain't that the funniest grave stone EVER?😂. I also heard a grave stone joke once that said: I TOLD you I was sick. Lolol
I loved him back in the day!
One of the last of the old time comics. Like his hero, Jack Benny, made his personality a source of much of his humor....
When late night TV was something to look forward to.
Seriously.. the last time I felt that was with Conan and Leno… now it’s just a big blah.. Kimmel and Fallon suck..
Young people ...really learn history...Rodney was the King
Johnny Carson Was the absolute king of late night television. Pretty much the entire country went to bed watching the Tonight show starring Johnny Carson. for something like 30 years from the 60s to the 90s he was incredibly beloved and I think the vibe you caught onto was just an example of how masterful he was at putting people at ease. Pretty much every one of the most famous comedians many of whom I’m sure you recognize had their big break on the Carson show. In fact, it’s known among comedians from that era that if you got asked to be on the Carson show that’s when you know that you’ve made it.
Cool! Maybe we'll look into more stuff from the show!
Actually, getting on the show didn't necessarily mean you made it. Getting the invite to the chair to talk after your set was done meant you made it. I've seen interviews of comedians who had decided to retire if they didn't get that Invite because it meant they had gone as far as they could go in the business.
right........i know
same here
"My last birthday cake looked like a prairie fire". When you get old enough, you'll understand, LOL!!
I feel sorry for those who didn't grow up with Johnny hosting The Tonight Show......it was the epitome of class and celebrity.
Johnny and Rodney are both professional comedians....and Johnny knew how to play off a person and make it work, almost no matter who it was....so it was easy with Rodney...they were both incredible stars at this point!
King of the one liners! That's about all...
He was the king of the one liners, rapid fire Rodney, like a machine gun.
His standup was pure genius. He also starred in several movies and was great in those as well. Cadyshack is probably his best known movie. Back To School and Easy Money were also really good. I'd not seen this particular clip before. Great reaction.
There'll never be another Rodney
Dangerfield's time on the chair is an extension of his stand-up routine. Johnny Carson was in on it.
Dangerfield was at the apex of his popularity by this time. Was a regular guest on The Tonight Show. People loved him. Very self-deprecating guy, as you saw in his routine. The reason the crowd roared when he would say "I get no respect" is because this was his signature line.
It was used in all of his acts. Please consider doing more comedy reactions. They are a blast to watch. Especially on y'all's channel.
Back to School, was great and Caddyshack. He was hilarious!!!!!! His jokes still get belly laughs when I tell them!!!
A movie with him that is very funny is Back to School. Y'all should check that out.
This brought back very fond memories! Thanks for doing this! You two are ALSO a great act together. The chemistry and the obvious comfort with each other. I'm really enjoying your music AND other vids. Keep it up!!
Loved Rodney as a kid. The comedians in my days were amazing and special.
The King of one liners to me, always made me cry with laughter!
He was Henny Youngman.
@@MichaelBoyce-tm2vw Oh yeah nearly forgot about him. He was bad! (in a good way)
You're the first person I've watched who notices how Carson interacts with Rodney. The comic timing between them is impeccable. It's what makes these videos so wonderful.
Saw him in the 90's at a comedy club in LA...he was not on the list of performers that night..he just showed up....he was reading from a piece of paper testing out new materail....it was HILARIOUS!!!
It's told that Rodney was the most well-prepared comedian in the business. Every line was detailed, crafted down to the syllable.
Aways writing obsessively.
Rodney Dangerfield 1921-2004, Great comedian and actor.
Yeah, in the one you missed, he said, "My last birthday cake looked like a prairie fire", meaning it had a LOT of candles on it.
Rodney was always funny no matter what.. his album “No Respect” in the early 80s is hilarious from beginning to end
Greatest comedian ever.
Rodney was the best at one liners!!!, Luv you two!!!
You guys said the conversation seemed different. Neither are fake personalities, now all you see is fake.
Nice reaction.
Rodney said he was so old his last birthday cake looked like a prairie fire. That refers to the fact that there were so many candles that were lit as usually you use the number of candles that matches the age! And the reference to the rabbit was a fair amount of time in the past they had a myth that a woman was pregnant IF the rabbit died! 👱♀👱♀👗👗👠👠❤❤
I caught his nightclub act one time when I was in Las Vegas... I was laughing hysterically at his one liners, and he was already 5 more one-liners down the road. I couldn't keep up with his act. He didn't use a single curse word the whole time... but he had a lifetime supply of double entenders. His humor was self-deprecating, and he was the most down-to-earth person you'd ever want to meet.
You've also seen Rodney in things like Caddy Shack, Back to School and other slapstick comedies.
He said about his age: "I'm so old my last birthday cake looked like a prairie fire."
I was 16 in 1979. I love Rodney. I recall once tuning in to the Tonight Show hoping that Rodney would be appearing that night, and to my surprise, he was on that night!
(Might have been this one!)
If this was also your first exposure to Jonny Carson, that is another amazing rabbit hole to go down!!!
Dangerfield is best! I teach 6-8 grades, and when they start with the "burns," I blow them all out with Dangerfield material lol!
One thing you don't understand because of how long ago it was is that he came from the clubs and theaters before TV, and that circuit was called vaudiville. He would have come up toward the end of it, but the comedy pace was quick. He also had a club in New York called Dangerfield's, in which he used to warm up the crowd and otherwise tell plenty of jokes. That's what he means when he says he's going back to NY and will be at the club, then he's going up to New England. In other words, he knows a lot of bang bang jokes and mostly tells his latest ones. That was his style. I guarantee he may have had an idea or two, but he really never knew exactly what he was going to say on Carson. Whatch any of his other appearances, he just bangs them out. Once in a while, if you know his stuff, he will repeat one a few years later. I'm just saying his appearances were not so much rehersed bits, but a little of that and flow of thought.
1,000 years from now people will still be laughing along to Sir Rodney,
Rodney was absolutely One of a Kind!
Robin Williams was also One of a Kind! RIP (live on Broadway)
Ralphie May RIP - (Politically Incorrect)
Rodney Carrington - live from the Majestic
You both are smart enough to get his humor and jokes, others i have watched --his joke go over their heads. Thanks
I must be old cause i dont get never having heard of him.. He was amazing.. Glad you got to check him out! Go watch the movie Caddyshack.. A hilarious classic..
RIP Rodney Dangerfield, King of the one liners
Keep doing RODNEY on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. He did tons of appearances. All fantastic. I'm new to your channel but I don't think you do movies so on your own time, watch the movie CADDYSHACK. It's hilarious and RODNEY steals the show!!
He said his birthday cake "looked like a prairie fire."
Best part is johnny jumping in to soon
this was on the fly and it hits or misses but love it.
He started in 1969 the debut album on Arista was recorded then issued in 1980. It was recorded at the Bell Studio.
Dangerfield showed up several times on this same show (Johnny Carson Show) with new material. He is always very funny. I know you and your wife will enjoy.
Prairie Fire: He is so old that his cake has so many candles he can't get close enough to blow them out due to the heat. "What a Crowd".
In Vegas, a couple walked up to Rodney and told him, "hey Rodney, we just got married? What do you think?" He told them, "you both could have done better!"
You may also want to check out Sam Kinison Marriage and World Hunger. Kinison was one of Rodney's greatest finds.
Padum pa! The king of one-liners, from the best late-night show...Tonight Show w/Johnny Carson; thank goodness for youtube!
As Greg Kifer stated, comics from that day came out of vaudeville. That was comedy that lead before the strippers came on the stage. If you didn't get laughs quickly, they boo'd you off the stage becasue they wanted to see the dancers.
The thing with Rodney Dangerfield is he comes out on stage and gives you a show, then he goes to sit down with Johnny Carson, and gives you another show.
How can you not know what a prairie fire is ?
"I'm not saying my wife is easy, but last week I bought a used car... I found her dress in the back seat. - Rodney
He has a clip, "100 best joke"... that's a good one. Other than that, anytime he's on the tonight show with Johnny Carson is great.
It's rare to find people in show business that can balance the show against the business. Carson was a master entertainer and shared his limelight with many other masters. I miss those shows and that style of showmanship.
Rodney was the king of punch lines. Glad you guys enjoyed him like we have for several years. You should look up Sam Kinison if you haven't
He said, "My birthday cake looked like a prairie fire." LOTS of candles.
King of the one liners
13:18 My last birthday cake looked like a prairie fire. You know what a prairie is? The flat lands across the middle of the US with hundreds of miles of wheat and corn. Imagine it catching on fire. His birthday cake had so many candles because he is so old.
Back to school was another great movie.
You 2 are good together fun watching
his Birthday Cake looked like a Prairie Fire, like burning Grass because there was so many candles.
John was a force in music at the time, 60s and early 70s.
Not many people ever got Johnny to laugh like that. Rodney was on his show a few time when Johnny could barely get a word in. Robin Williams was another that could get away with it. You should check out his first time on The Tonight Show. Hilarious!
For Bars and Barbells. So old the candles, on his birthday cake, looked like a prairie fire. What's to not get?
I can remember back to those yours and listening to my dads older friends. His friends would cut up like this for hours while drinking and smoking. Circa 1979, they were all well educated and had good jobs. They drank like fish and told jokes all night long. Jokes that you could never tell today!
It takes two to tango.. May I suggest looking into reacting to Johnny Carson , he was the best late night host ever iMO.
He is famous for one liners... He was in a famous movie "Caddyshack". Don Rickles is another older comedian...famous for one liners as well
Rodney is a jewel, a treasure, every time I saw him, knew it was gonna be good, it was a given,..the wife jokes, his kids jokes,,the dog jokes,..you so should see Back to School Movie, it's crazy, Adrienne Barbeau plays as his wife, for me there weren't enough scenes with them together, cause every scene was his wife jokes,..and him with Sam Kinison, yeah he's in there too, it's just golden,..I was too shocked when I saw Sally Kellerman in it, who was in original Mash movie,..Mash was crazy enough, but this,...do check it out,..loved your reaction, the jokes have stood the test of time,..Godspeed, Peace ✌
Rodney great stand up comedian great punchlines don rickles also is very funny
King of the one liners.
He was great in “Back to School”
Johnny Carson was a GREAT TV talk show host . He was especially good at setting up comedians so they would get laughs .Look up the video of Ed Ames on his Tonight Show . It got the longest sustained audience laugh in the history of TV .
My idea of a pleasure trip is taking my mother-in-law to the airport.
We got 3 kids, one of each.
I miss Carson and the old Tonight Show
"I get no respect" was Rodney's signature byline. But he was one of the most respected comedians of all time! Self-effacing humor is one of the most effective and endearing forms of humor.
Rodney Dangerfield (1921-2004) RIP.
Hey you two,
You all have selected one of the best stand-up comedians ever. Nothing was safe from Rodney -- he gets no respect! Here is another Rodney D. wife joke. He said my wife & I went to a marriage counselor. That counselor told us talk more after sex. Then he said she called me from the motel yesterday night. Then, he started on his daughter. He said she is having a tough time getting her drivers license. She can not get use to being in the front seat. Brutal, but funny!!!! You can not go wrong with Rodney's humor. But in this day & age. Many would get offended, thin skinned! He worked really well with Johnny Carson. You two take care & keep watching!
Rodney made a very successful career of self depreciating humor and getting no respect. His role in Caddyshack is hilarious. 😂
The joke was, "Are you kidding? I know I'm getting old. My last birthday cake looked like a prairie fire."
The inside joke between these two was that Johnny knew that Rodney, even after sitting down next to Johnny in seemingly "casual" conversation, still needed to stick to a certain sequence of jokes to keep things in order, while Johnny would occasionally tease Rodney by asking him a question in the wrong order, but knowing at the same time that no one could throw Rodney off his pattern or game plan.
Dangerfield was the best,,,, His one-liners and always adjusting his tie LOL
"I Get No Respect!...... I Tell Ya"........
Great Reaction....
The GOAT
The gentleman sitting to Rodney's right was a very proper British movie actor and stage thespian named James Mason, one of England's finest. Rodney was a Jewish street kid from the East coast, so it was a clash of cultures, an inside joke when Rodney asked Mr. Mason, "So, what's new with you?"
Rodney: "I know I'm getting old. Why my last birthday cake looked like a prairie fire."
Johnny Carson always played the "straight man" for comedians on his show, such as Jonathan Winters and Joan Rivers.
Le😎
He mentioned was like a prairie fire because there was so many candles because he was so old
His wife described him as the nicest man she knew.
He said... 'I'm old, I know I'm getting old, my last cake looked like a prairie fire.''
What a crowd what a crowd 😂
I'm from Mass. The Chateau is gone but the Music Circus is still there. I've seen plenty of shows in both.
It's on You Tube as is his 1980 Casablanca album No Respect.
He is the king of one liners
