After my parents were married in 1954, my father went to a thrift store and bought a broken Maytag Model E2L like your wringer washer (except it had a red safety bar). It had a broken part, so my father bought the replacement part from the Maytag appliance store and fixed it himself.
My mother used the E2L until her parents came to visit. Her father was appalled that his daughter had to use a wringer washer so he went to the appliance store and bought her a brand new automatic washer.
My father took the E2L to his mother's house and set it up on her back porch. She used that wringer washer until the 1980s with minimal maintenance by my father.
In the meantime, my mother wore out 2 automatic washers.
You know modern washers for normal wash loads wash for 57 minutes! I almost flipped when I saw that, no wonder people have such high electric bills. I prefer old school myself. 👍
Well if they wash for less the 30 mins, the soap doesn't have time to break down the dirt that is trapped in the fabric. Also you need to put the cloths through another "clean water wash" to remove all soap residue.
So good to see you. I have a wringer washer, too, and never had a problem getting clothes clean.
Perfect explanation!!!! I'm sending this video to my daughters so they can see what I used to do. The other videos on here don't show whites, lights, darks, one after the other in the same water, saving water. The only thing I did differently was to drain the soapy water then fill the washer with rinse water and repeat the process. Gosh I miss my old washer even though there was a wire loose and it would give me a shock every now and then.....woke me up I'll tell ya!
Nancy Busso glad you liked it. I have heard others say they would drain the water and use the washer as a rinse tub but you don’t save near as much water that way. We had to haul water when I was a child (no indoor plumbing )and you didn’t want to use more than you absolutely had too. Hope the girls like it.
@@hootnannyhomestead8338 I did use the same rinse water for all the clothes and you don't need to fill the tub. I still hang my clothes outside whenever I can because I love the smell of fresh air. I never use scented laundry detergent, can't stand the smell. I have 5 adopted children from Asia including 1 who came home at age 9 yrs. When we would go camping she took all the dirty clothes to the creek, washed them by beating them on the rocks and then put them all on the bushes to dry. I'm sure when she watches the video she will say "I wish I had that in Cambodia!

When my husband called and said he found a working model for 25 dollars at a garage sale I took the plunge. I now am the owner or 2 maytag ringer washers one for wash and one for rinse. This is really helpful, thanks for sharing it! I never really knew how much water was needed for effective cleaning and just sort of guessed. Using enough water to create the roll-over effect makes sense. I don't have an old-fashioned washer but the information still applies to my portable, apartment-sized washing machine.

I learned recently that even the new hired Maytag repairman are taught to work on all models. Even the old wringers. Ask all the questions you want.
Same here! Maytag wringer washer only. Mother Nature dries my laundry. Thanks for a great video. The government just announced today new restrictions on washers. Glad I got my Maytag!
I love these machines, even though they are not automatic or modern, they have such a strong agitation. Plus, they're cool. When I was a kid my parents bought an old farm in Michigan, and one of these machines was left behind by the owner. As kids we loved to use these, we'd get dirty just to be able to wash more clothes.

Nanny- found this video today, as I now have a Sears wringer washer outside. We are repairing the septic system, so I am not using my regular washer. You would have laughed, I filled the machine from the garden hose, added laundry and it proceeded to drain! Figured out to keep that drain hose up high. Then I washed the clothes for 15 minutes and drained the washer, like my modern one, adding clean water to agitate and rinse. Then through the wringer. It was pretty comical, but I get my laundry clean and on the line :-)

Thanks for watching. What part of the country were you raised in? I’ve started letting my lil bit pull the clothes out on the other side and put them in the basket. But she’s still a tad to young to put them in the wringer. I know she will have those same memories when she gets older. That’s Part of why I do it.
@@hootnannyhomestead8338 I was a bit older, maybe about 8 or 10. And believe it or not, it was summers in northern New Jersey. We spent the summers near a glacial lake in the mountains. We swam and fished, caught frogs and turtles, (except snappers 😂), climbed the mountains, found Indian arrowheads, picked and ate fresh wild blackberries. It was a wonderful childhood and I have amazing memories. I’m sure Lil bit will too. ❤️
@@clarkbilgrav I was talking to my 94 yr old mother in-law once about our childhoods. We were comparing hers to mine. I was raised in the ozark hills of Arkansas by a poor family and her in Iowa city by a richer family. Many years before myself. And It was amazing how much more modern she was raised than I was all those years later. It don’t really matter WHEN a person was born. But where and how. Lol I’m glad you got to experience some of those things in life I believe it builds character.
I miss my ringer washer . I left it with one of my daughters when I moved back to Florida. I have been looking for one ever since. Mine was real deep and I would wash the things that were not very dirty first and then the next load in the same water . To keep from using too much water I would do two loads before I rinsed anything.
Gail Reese yeah they are great. I normally do four or five loads before changing the wash water. Usually by then my clothes line is full so that’s all I do. Only one load of water used. Awesome.
I'm currently looking for a wringer for my home. I too have watched and used since a child and am so ready to start using one again. I also am looking forward to following your postings....

I Remember These Ring Washer Machine In 1968 & 1969 When My Oldest Cousin Used To Washed Our Clothes!! When I Was Between 4 And 5 Year's Of Age!! I Remember The Washer Used To Be Round Shaped!! PS:. The Whites With The Whites Clothes, The Darker Clothes With The Darker Colors!! And So On.
Hey Don thanks for the comment. The main reason I don’t wash my clothes by color piles is because your re-using the water from load to load. So I wash cleanest to dirtiest. Back in the old days people washed by color mostly because dyes bleed. These days our clothes don’t bleed as badly as they did then. But I still test wash new items in the tub before tossing in the washer. Thanks a bunch.
I have one of those agitatorless washers and I hate it! I do have two of the Maytag’s one a 1950 model that square and one that’s a 1951 model that’s round. Lol I’m a 1951 model also! I have used them outside for doing just the rugs and blankets but I think I’m going to bring them in to do my laundry. I usually wash and one and rinse in 1, with a second rinse tub.

You cant beat the wringer washer they are the best washer they clean your washing.
OK so I’m going to ask a question. On my ringer washer when I send the clothes through especially things like jeans they don’t ring out too well. My husband says because the top will not lock down because the rollers are too hard and we need to replace those. Would you happen to know where we can get the rollers for the ringer? And I also can’t get my agitator off. Would you happen to have any suggestions about that.

I had to come back and tell you we got me a ringer washer a few days ago and I’m loving it. Except I don’t like the little air pedal that I have to use to operate the ringers. But other than that I really enjoy it.

I just started fixing a washer that had the air pedal.. I read that you can remove it and put a 1/2” bolt in and then you don’t need the pedal. The pedal is a safety feature.
The arm on the top of my maytag wringer won't lock in place. What's wrong
I feel like I’m a brand new baby because this is the first time I’ve ever seen one of these washer used. I’ve seen those buckets the ones with the ringer in the center I never really thought twice. I can imagine using this washer off grid because it’s so minimal electronics going on probably no electronica boards at all and then just hang clothes after that. Just amazing to me.It’s just a shame how hard they are to find online and then everybody wants to have a pick up for these items. A lot of them are super rusty
Yeah. We bought ours on eBay from a guy in Missouri. We are in Arkansas so it was a lil weekend trip to pick it up. I ask him for a reserve in case I got there and it didn’t work or wasn’t the washer in the pictures and he agreed. Remember your the buyer so the are playing ball in your game park. Ask to FaceTime first and see the washer live. Anything you need to feel comfortable about the buy. Also yes they are basic mechanics. You could hook the drive belt on the motor to a bicycle with a little bit of rigging and ride a bike to wash your clothes (if you wanted to go totally off grid)if you’ve got older children that’s even better put them on the bike. The motor on mine is basic so very easy to replace. A novice could rebuild one quite easy I’m sure. If your willing to put in the work. They run off of rack and pinion gears. There are even websites where you can buy used parts.
The best washers out there. They are more high efficiency than what’s on the market today. You can use one tub fill of water for many loads. They are awesome and do a much better job at cleaning clothes than what’s out there now.

If you’re lucky, Universal appliance by Landers, Frary and Clark made two model wringer washers in the late 1920’s or early 1930’s, one was aluminum the other cast iron porcelain. Porcelain was more expensive and retained heat better than aluminum however aluminum heats up quicker. The Universal had three things that Maytag washers did not: They had an electric switch box that acted as a built in circuit breaker as well and was grounded as it was made out of Bakelite. If the wringer got jammed and you could not hit the release bar in time, it will shut off automatically. I rewired the entire machine and the breaker switch did shut off on its own. I still don’t understand why Maytag made the on and off switch obsolete. The other is unlike the horizontal pump release bar on the J and N Maytag models, Universal made the drain a spigot like a faucet which is ideal so you don’t run the risk of accidentally hitting the bar and have a water geyser all over your floor. Last, it used wooden blocks for the wringer rollers and no plastic parts. Don’t believe marketing when they tell you HE machines save on money. They save on electricity when functioning and don’t clean your clothes as well, but they do not outlast their investment. I think it would be a good idea to use a stick or a pole of some sort like the cut off rounded end of a wooden broom handle. Much easier and its safer than sticking hands and arms into the wash tub. Love your vids!
I do have a stick to punch down the laundry. But I just use my hands. Once you get use to where those agitator paddles are at you can do it safely. Thanks.

I grew up using a wringer washer too. I always did the laundry for mama, then when I married and had my first child I would do our wash at mama's cause I only had a rub board.

My mom had a double rinse tub which made the job much easier and quicker. The hard part was carrying the wet clothes up the cellar stairs to the backyard then hanging them on the clothesline to dry.
Yeah I think I would have moved the washer somewhere else, where stairs where not an issue. Lol If I may ask how did the double rinse tub make it easier? Curious.
Always have the tub filled a few inches below the top, to give the load a good turnover. It will be easier on the motor.
I do mention the roll over in the video but when I only have a few clothes in the washer I get a good rollover without having to fill it all the way up. But yes when I ad more clothes I ad more water. Thanks.

I owned one of these 53 year ago , Love my front loader today , much less work , I can put the clothes in and delay start they will be ready for me to hang out when I get up in the morning .
That’s good! I love the work. But for some reason it don’t feel like work to me. I love doing domestic chores like the housewives of the 40’s and 50’s did. So many younger women today take no pride in making a home. Thanks for watching.
I hope yours lasts longer than mine did. The computer board died after three years, past warranty, of course. It took an hour to do a load, so it didn't save electricity, which costs more than water around here. I went back to a top load, mechanical only machine. I'll never buy another HE machine. I'll get one of these or wash by hand, if I can't get another top load, no computer machine.
I have watched three different videos on wringer washers and no one knows how to us a wringer washer... this is sad 😢 I have four children and used my washer for years, they are awesome if you know how to use .😢😢
I may be buying a wringer washer. There is an estate sale on two weeks and it looks as if a late model speed queen in clean condition will be up for sale.
I'm trying to think of how to do my clothes so I don't have to drain and refill frequently. If I wash my underwire bras in a half tub of cold and garmet bag first, then when that is done, fill up the rest of the way with hot and do whites.
I rarely use bleach but if I did, when do I add it? At the last load or does that need to be at the start and then you have to drain out the load for colors?
How would you do it?
Yes you have the right idea with the bras then hot water and whites. I normally don’t do all my laundry in one day. I will do wearing clothes one day then on another day do sheets, towels, wash rags and other things that leave behind lint. I’ve normally got my line full by the time I do three or four loads anyway. So it works out best. Usually it’s linens one week then wearing clothes the next. I hardly ever use bleach also. When to put the bleach in solely depends on what you’re bleaching, if the items are extremely soiled like cleaning rags which could be quite nasty I would wash them last and add the bleach. But if I wanted to bleach a bra I would wash it first with bleach then wash anything white that could be bleached (like white towels or sheets) after that load. Still keeping my loads cleanest to dirtiest.

Impossible to get parts in Australia unfortunately. I had my Nanna's mid 50s wringer washer til 2000. It was a beauty. Lemon and white. Perfect condition, but wringer rollers had perished, motor died not long after the heating element. Great for blankets.I went from top loader with agitator to front loader. My mum is 74 and still hand washes at the concrete wash tub. She rarely uses her toploader. I spied your washboard. I have an ancient one I love to use at my own wash trough. Very quick and effective to hand wash and hand rinse a tubfull. I line dry too. And I still starch some things. Yes I was brought up very old fashioned! I'm 48.

Hah! Rare gals indeed! My grandparents ran a working farm. Did everything old fashioned. Everything home grown and cooked. I was just brought up that way. I make all food from scratch. I sew clothes and mend everything. I might add that my hubby and I are both 1940s/50s lovers. Dress and live that way. Makes sense we love the old ways of living. I actually love to wear aprons too. Do you have a laundry pokey stick? Nanna's hung on a hook on the wall. It was decades old. Poked many a hot wash in the tub and wringer washer (in Australia we called the wringer a mangle). Love a hot wash too. Do you have optical whitener in the states? We have an ancient one in Aust called Bluo. You put a capful in the rinse water for whites. I damn near blind myself when I hang my white sheets and towels out! Ha! By the way, loooove your rustic laundry room.
Yes Lydia I do have one of those laundry poky sticks. Haha. It lays in the window seal behind the washer. I love wearing aprons to. I see most of my own clothes. And I don’t like cooking unless it’s a big meal from scratch. There are a few company’s that make bluing for laundry. It sure does help. I love handing out my laundry. So fresh and clean. We sound like two lil peas in a pod. Hehe.
@@hootnannyhomestead8338 My mum uses her window stick infront of her concrete wash sinks! Haha! Same stick since about 1967 in the same laundry in the same house. I was in late high school when her wringer machine died. Hers was a 60s one.

I think I would want to rinse more. Is the reason you don't have to because of the wringer?
nsc 8 some people like to have an extra rinse tub but personally I don’t My whites come out white and I’ve never rinsed twice and I rarely use bleach. Only when someone’s been sick and I’ve got really nasty cleaning rags to wash. Yuck. Lol I don’t buy paper towels so I have to wash some pretty nasty rags. Lol
Hi. I just bought me one of these. I love it. But the water seal washers on the power head shaft that the agitator slides down on needs replaced. Would you happen to know where I could buy new ones?

Thanks so much. I've been trying with no luck but I'm going to try the website you gave me because just the sound of the website sounds like they will have it. Now one thing I want to ask it that does your wringer rollers work by compressed are or does it run electrically? The one I have looks like yours but it has a skinny grey rubber tube on it and I just recently found out that you have to have a foot pump that pumps air to the rollers and switches them on to run lol. They said the original pumps are extremely hard to find and if you do find one it's probably going to be dry rotted so I went out and bought me a foot bicycle air pump that you press with your foot and it actually makes it come on and roll the rollers I'm glad I got that problem solved but now for getting new washers for it. But reason I asked you that is because they told me some models rollers didn't have to have a foot pump and but the model I got happens to have to have a air pump to make it run. Lol I wish I could have got one that didn't need a air pump but I've got that problem solved and it works fine. Yes you can still buy them. I have heard that Leamans sales them new. But keep an eye out for them online. You might get lucky like I did and find one for sale close to you.

@@hootnannyhomestead8338 the wringer is locked up. The previous owners washed horse blankets in it, so, needless to say, it is not in very good condition. They installed a rubber pump....looks like a turkey baster to be truthful, as an emergency stop for the wringer....Do not know why.
Also painted it "badly " with what was probably Dollar General spray paint. Drips all over. Ugh
My husband is going to fix it. We live in an area with many Amish/Mennonite persons, so we have a go to for advice.
Anyway, just wanted a backup, so we will see what we see.
Apparently all people seem to do with wringer washing machines is plant flowers in them.
Idiots. Lol
And keep an eye on socks and wash clothes/dish rags sometimes they wrap themselves around the ringers, then you have to unwrap them.🙄

The nappy washing girl I would absolutely love to do that and I been planning to do it for some time now. We are going through a lot of health issues right now and YT videos have been put on hold till I can get around. I’m struggling just to do my own laundry. I want to help others out so badly. Pray we get through this and I can get back to helping others learn more.

Best washers ever, I have 3 children in diapers and wash about 20 to 30 diapers and babies clothes a day, in a wringer maybe two loads as they take huge loads of nappies at once my modern machine only hold maybe a dozen per load.
What is going wrong with your wash routine? I imagine you would need to use more water so you could fully rinse and then wash the diapers in separate water.
@@UnicoiZoom I have washed my diapers for about 30 minutes and the nappies seems to go yellow grey. I then wring the nappies into the tub with the rinse water but not white as white. I only use soap flakes and not bleach on them
The nappy washing girl are you hand rinsing the items. I mean are you picking each nappie up and wringing it then dunking it again and fully rinsing the wash water out of them? That’s what I do. I don’t see anything wrong with having two rinses tubs for items you want extra clean for your baby.
My first question is did you ever think of restoring it?
Restoring? Like painting it with new paint? It works great looks well loved, so no it never crossed my mind.
My speed queen ringer hum when plugged in but wont start
Debbie that could be a number of things. I would google and or ask around for a repair person who works ok such things and see if they could look at it. Also don’t be afraid to call places that work on modern machines. Some of those older repair men know a lot about wringers. Best of luck.
What if you can't get it to agitate
If you are pulling out on the knob that starts the agitator and nothing is happening. Your belt drive on the motor could be loose, slipping or come off. Or if the machine is old and not been used recently it could have rusted and seized the drive belt. Or worse case scenario, a gear is broken. Let me know!

Lots of knowledge and he has downloadable manuals for all kinds of machines if you’re not sure what size belt you can email him and he will help you get the right one. Good luck. What about blankets? Please do a video on blankets
I’m having some technical difficulties right now or I would. Yes you can do blankets. The secret is to have a partner when you do them some of them can get very heavy when they are water logged. What I do is find a short end of the blanket. Fold it till it’s bout as wide as the rollers. Then off set it a few inches like I did the jeans. Hold it up out of the water till you feel most of the water has drained out of it. Then turn on the roller and start it inside just a few inches. Turn the roller off. Then start pulling and folding the next few feet of blanket. Repeating that process till your done. It’s not easy takes lots of muscle and patience. I wouldn’t try a blanket larger than a queen. If you find you just can’t do it that way. Try this. Go buy you a cheap plastic laundry basket. Drill a bunch a holes in the bottom and make sure the holes in the side go way down on the side. You are creating a very large sieve. The sit the backer close to the washer. Pull the blanket a lil at a time into the basket and then set it either over the washer or in the tub or one the porch and push down on it. Turning it a lil after it’s drained a while. The longer the better. Then lay it on its side facing the rollers on top of the machine and pull the blanket out lil by lil and send it through. Thank. How would you even find a functional one of these? I don’t think that Lowe’s would have one. My mom got rid of hers in the 1950’s.
I found mine on eBay. But make sure you look it over and/or ask all the important questions before buying.

@@hootnannyhomestead8338 No, i bought a commercial washer that has an agitator and 2 water settings .. best i could find (also maytag) to solve the dirty clothes/no turn over issue. The other problem I had was the soap wasnt being rinsed from the HE washer so it was causing rashes. I tried a bunch of things before i sat in the basement and watched a full wash cycle .. lol all it did was swish swish back and forth the clothes didnt move until the spin/"rinse" cycle. Brutal design, but the more i looked into it - its not the companies failing its a government mandate on water usage for consumer products. More short sighted changes. That and, after the washing machine was change out, my water usage went down. Mostly because you do not have to wash things twice or run extra rinse cycles and you can do larger loads.

@@hootnannyhomestead8338 Yeah they really do not stand up. Funny story with all this, I was at Lowes looking for a machine with an agitator and the sales guy literally got into an argument with me about how well they washed. His theory "everyone buys HE so they have to work or no one would buy them" except, haha that's all that is available unless you move to commercial washers. Really though if anyone's a sales person reading this .. if someone goes into a store looking for something specific don't tell them they are wrong T_T

I love your videos, may I make a suggestion? You might want to hang some curtains and paint a bit. I say this because a lovely lady such as yourself, should have a lovely laundry room. 😊
I do not mind suggestions. But I thought I mentioned in more than one video that our cabin is a work in progress. The gray boards you see in the washroom with chipped paint are exactly what I wanted. I salvaged them from a barn that was being torn down. Our cabin has a primitive decor and I love it. Yes there are things that need to be finished like the insulation in the washroom ceiling but we are doing those jobs as time and money allow so that we don’t go into debt for it. We are mortgage free and plan on staying that way. Thanks for watching.

Mine is pluged how do i fix it
Remove your agitator and find your drain hole. If it has a lint catcher remove and clean it. Then take two or three foot length of wire and run down the hole till it unclogs or it comes out the other end. You may need to do it four or five times to completely clean it out. After it’s unclogged take a bottle brush and attach it firmly to the wire and as you run hot water down the drain push the brush through a few more times to clean the inside of the drain line.
