These old Maytag wringer washers are the best. I have my grandma's machine from the '50's, one from the '40's and one from the '60's. All work great!

Those old Maytags do a FAR BETTER cleaning than the new HE machines. You let heavily soiled items soak and wash longer; lightly soiled items only need a few minutes to wash. COUPLE SUGGESTIONS---when you're done washing for the day, pull your agitator up off the drive shaft and leave it in the tub. Unlike with an automatic machine, you are able to clean under the agitator and remove any loose coins or whatever. Also get some CHEAP vaseline on your fingertip and coat the ridges on the drive shaft to make the agitator easier to pull off. If your machine has an automatic drain pump, make sure you always clean the metal screen under the agitator.
Also at the end of your wash day, hit the RELEASE bar on the wringer to remove tension on the rollers. If you don't do this the rollers can stick together and get damaged. Also wipe the inside of the tub and leave the lid open so it can dry.

I never used it for washing clothes but we did use it to hull beans. We put a clean sheet in the tub and started the rollers. We would put fresh picked beans from the garden through the rollers and the beans would pop out into the tub. The empty hulls would pass through into a large bowl. Good memories!

You can shine up the inside tub on that with a SOS pad, or fine steel wool. Thats what I do with my old Maytag. It will re darken with use of powdered detergent but..
I love ur old kitchen and the tile work

Thanks for the compliment! This house was made in the 30s I believe. I love it too!
I tried the steel wool and the SOS pads on the corrosion but it was a lot of work to make a little progress. It also scratched up the tub so I decided to look for a sander at the next estate sale and try that. Maybe some 400 grit sand paper will do the job. We’ll see.

      I just did mine
What worked for me was to fill the tub about an inch or so of warm soapy water and 600 grit sand paper. The trick was keeping sand paper really wet with the soapy water. Then I used fine steel wool to remove sanding marks also keeping things wet.
The water will get dark from removing all the oxidation.
Can be done to the crown too. Rinse out and buff dry..it will look new!

Use Brillo to clean up the tub and make it shine. It will also get rid of the alkali deposits that form on the tub over time.

@@davidadkison4702 The Brillo pads didn’t do much for my tub. I tried sandpaper, but it scratched the tub up pretty bad. I think I need to use a finer grit. My plan is to get a sander and sand the tub down and then buff it out. I just haven’t had the time to do it.
One thing I’ve learned is this is not an outdoor machine. When the rain gets in the tub, it makes all kinds of lines and deposits inside.
      Thanks for the tip though.

When you get ready to paint that use Seymour MRO paint with a USC SprayMax 2K clear on top. That will last a lifetime.

@@happy2vent76 I know, right? It’s plugged into a surge protector because the machine is not grounded and the cord is only that long. I’m anxious to rewire the motor with a grounded cord, but it has been a challenge getting that done.

Is it necessary to wring them out or can you just hang them soaking wet?

    • @Loadofwash
      @Loadofwash  3 месяца назад +2

Leaving clothes soaking wet would make items heavy on the clothesline. Some things might fall off due to their weight with water in them and it would take maybe a day or two to dry them out. I recommend buying a spin dryer to go with this operation.
