This is a collection of test footage shot with the Helios 44-2 on the BMCC6K and I think it is my new favourite lens!
I’ve been wanting to get it for years and found a really good one so decided to finally get it!
This would also be a good lens to have for the new Pyxis or Ursa Cine too and I am super keen to test it out on those as soon as I get my hands on the cameras.
Keep in mind that some of these shots were done in a way to test the lens. I wouldn’t point the camera at the sun this way on actual shoots but I wanted to test flares and contrast.
Hope you enjoy this video!
Shot Open Gate at 23.98 fps. Handheld.
Let me know if you have any questions :).
Cheers,
Flo

This is a collection of test footage shot with the Helios 44-2 on the BMCC6K and I think it is my new favourite lens!
Do you have this lens?
Cheers,
Flo
I love the Helios too and I use it in my pocket 4K with a speedbooster. But the small sensor doesn’t do the lens justice as it gets just stunning with this sensor and using all of that swirly bokeh.
Looks incredible! Did you get the lens off eBay or from Iron Glass?
@@user-bd8yl6id9e Thanks!! From the equivalent of gumtree/craigslist in France :).
@@jesrablom Yeah it really shines on FF. that’s what I didn’t get one before.
Outstanding
The way the lens bokeh reflects off the foliage in the background at 00:10 is amazing.
Such a special lens :) !!
WOW, I absolutely love the way this lens renders the image. Well done, Flo! Also, awesome thumbnail!
Thank you mate! And glad you like the thumbnail, it took me hours to decide and I wasn't sure it'd do ok haha.
♥ Aww lil Finn! Really love the look of these shots!
Me too 😍🥹
Great work Flo!
Thank you!!
❤ Superb footages as always! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching :) !!
My favorite lens too. I love the look, the bokeh is the best... and flares, oh they are so good) Glad you found it!)
Thank you!! Really loving it so far :)
Wooooooooow !!! What a dreamy look! Stunning
Thank you ☺️🙏
An Oscar for the leading actor.
😂 I’ll give him one! 🏆
A balm for every eye! Wonderful shots and colours!
Thank you ☺️🙏
The Helios 44-2 is outstanding! Great work bro🔥🔥🔥
Thanks so much man!!
What version is your Helios 44-2? Was it made in the KMZ factory????
So beautiful! ❤
☺️🙏
Simply Beautiful !!!!!
Thank you!!
This lens have some much character! Great vid!
So much character it’s insane! Thanks mate 🙏
Magical!! ✨
☺️🙏
wow! Another great video! Amazing work 🔥🔥! I think the helios is just perfect for dreamy moody shots and I'm looking forward to use it also opengate once I will have the chance for the "not-pocket" haha
Thanks so much!! Such a good combo on this cam :)
Love the swirly bokeh from the Helios lens! Also great footage & color grading 👏
Thank you :) !!
An absolutely stunner, it’s like it was made for the FF!
Thanks mate! And I totally agree 😍🎥
Unreal 🙌🏻
☺️🙏
Wow amazing!
Thanks ☺️🙏
love all in love!!
☺️🙏
I so love the colours bro great work about to invest in Blackmagic 6k after being a Sony user for 6years | Love from India 👌🏻💕
This dreamy look... ✨
Love it :) !!
Excellent footage ! I believe I told you that you’ll love it 😀 It’s an amazing lens
Thanks mate!! And yeah haha I really do 😍🎥
@@OfTwoLands It’s funny how we always look for the best lenses that fit the purpose and how we look into expensive cinema lenses, while you can have a solid Soviet lens for “cheap” which gives amazing results
didn't finish the video yet but I'm sure its another great one 👏 I recently got a few Helios lenses myself and man they are game changers for me, I thought I would only be able to shoot anamorphic but the Helios lenses have so much character on their own 👏 plus the Canon FDs do too 👏 vintage lenses are amazing
Btw if you find that you're searching for a more wide angle lens that has some of that swirly bokeh, you might research the Makinon 28mm f2.8! I was searching for one a few weeks ago and read about it and picked one up pretty affordably, it doesn't quite swirl like the Helios unfortunately but I think it does have a bit of the swirl at the edges and offers the wide angle look, might be worth looking at!
the colors look amazing. Can't wait to test on Pyxis :D
Thanks!! Me too ☺️
I have got 3 helios lenses f2 and a mir-37mm f2.8 i bought the mir with a red one mx pl mount adapted, i havent use any of the four lenses for a project. What i use most is a super takumar f 1.4 i got two of those. They are really amazing you should try them out you wil be blowned away. I will start using my helios when my super takumar dies. I doubt if it will ever die, its built like a tank. Amazing videos as always.
I used it last week for the first time on a commercial, and I’ve fallen in love with it too. Just got the Mir 1B too…😀
Nice! Same here, just got the Mir last week 😍🎥
Very nice! :)
Thanks ☺️🙏
Beautiful footage Flo. Yeah, I love the look of this lens - and so cheap for what you get. It really comes into it's own on FF as it was originally intended. Nice one (and wow, your kid is growing up fast! (#family)
Thanks so much mate!! And yeah haha he really is 🥹
@@OfTwoLands I love filming my kids with my P4K - you never regret capturing those moments in cinema "overkill" when you look back on the footage! °¬)
I adore this lens
Me too ☺️
So nice! They really come to life when paired with a FF sensor, especially with this open gate aspect. Hot tip - the 44-4 version is great too. More sharpness and contrast wide open, still with the swirly Bokeh - I own both and find myself using that one more. The whole series are the best bang for buck vintage lenses I reckon.
Thanks!! And yes I agree, that’s why I didn’t get one until having a Ff camera ☺️
Thanks for the tip about the 44-4 🙏
And I agree too, best bang for buck when it comes to vintage glass and character!
@@OfTwoLands I dream of getting a full rehoused set before they inevitably go up in value from the Batman/Dune effect haha. BTW love the channel - Im fresh to RUclips but realised I actually met you briefly years ago - A good old FB Marketplace purchase haha - a pocket 6k cage I think
Looks stunning.
I love Helios but I find them very hard to cut in with other lenses.
Thanks!! And yeah I can understand, such a unique and specific look. Doesn’t work for everything.
Wow!!
☺️🙏
welcome to the pack! 🐺 🐺
☺️🙏
Amazing 👏
Thank you!!
Wow that's a beautiful image. I'm about to head on a campervan trip through Spain, France and Portugal and thinking of the Canon FD 24mm for some nice wides. BTW your young fella certainly knows what to do in front of the camera!
Unless you have another suggestion for something in the 18-28mm range? Something relatively cheap and vintage :D
Thank you!! Haha he knows how to avoid the camera too! You should see all the other unused shots haha!
I have the FD 24mm so yes I would recommend it. I personally love my Contax Zeiss 28mm.
Did you do any stabilization in post? Or is this straight out of the camera? Looks lovely and lively, love my helios lenses ❤
👏
🙏☺️
Hey Flo i’m a big fan of your work and plan to shoot a short film with the BMPC6k pro and helios 44m can you give me some insight or advice and settings to achieve the best look with this combo
Awesome video! I am sure this will be one that your son will love to watch when he is grown up.
I just released a similar video with the Helios 44-2 on a S5IIX on a day in Munich, Germany. I didn´t know I had a fitting step up ring for the lens, because a ND filter would have been nice 😅 oh well, next time!
Thank you!! I love being able to capture little memories and moments in time like these :)
I'll be sure to check out your video!
It's was so beautiful 😍
Thanks so much!!
@@OfTwoLands you're welcome 🫶🏽
You should try out the Minolta Rokkor MD lenses! The 50mm f1.4 and the 28mm f2.8 are incredible, Leica used to work with Minolta because their coatings were so good & consistent.
No one really talks about Minolta here on RUclips, probably because it's hard to mount to EF with their flange distance, and full frame is just starting to become more common. I really think they might suit your style, though!
Thanks for the tip mate!
Already have too many lenses haha!
@@OfTwoLands I feel you, can’t ever have enough!
Hey,
Great work! I have the same camera but currently I'm having trouble adapting my vintage lenses to it, including one very similar to this. What adpeter and/ or step up ring are you using? THANK YOU
Thanks!! I used an Urth one, listed in the description :)
Ordered my yesterday, cant wait after seeing this! Very inspiring - as usual!
Love my Leica R´s but this hits just different.
Have you tried it on the S35 sensor ? Sadly not having a FF yet
Also really keen to see the Mir 1b, has it any similarities in terms of the Character?
Nice!! Thank you 🙏
I haven’t tried on S35, I love open gate too much on my 6K FF haha!
I just got the Mir actually, quite similar but I still prefer the Helios.
Amazing! Do you recommend it on a MFT camera without any speedbooster? I don’t want to spend a lot of money buying one.. I’m using a BMPCC4K and a GH5
Really beautiful! What’s the nature of the crop when using this lens with a full frame camera. I have a Helios but have only ever used it on the BMPCC 4K so I’m curious how this works on full frame.
Thanks!! This is a full frame lens so no crop :).
Both the 44-2 and Jupiter produce such stunning images for my BMCC6K that I don't think I'll go for any new lens unless it's specifically required for a project, honestly.
They really do produce a unique and distinct look! Personally I think I’ll use them more for personal and creative projects but will see ☺️
@@OfTwoLands Oh man, I've used them for two corporate projects as of now-and as long as people don't notice and go, "wow such a nice image" I'm happy. I get the money, and I also get to shoot something having fun with it lol
Amazing stuff.. can I ask what resolution do you export out at to keep the open gate ratio please?
Thanks!! 3840x2560 if I remember correctly :)
Amazing work, does your 6k is a full frame version? 🎉
Thank you and yes!
Very nice. 👏👏
Thanks 🙏☺️
Beautiful. My only negative is the screw mount.
Thank you!! What don’t you like about it?
@@OfTwoLands my two copies have fairly stiff focus rings and the lens tends to unscrew.
@@drumslapper my 44-2 has a firm focus ring and I worry about it unscrewing too lol. I'm sure you could mod it to whatever mount you need and get rid of the screw.
Salut!
Looks so good on full frame 6k
Lovely combo! 😍
This lens really shines on the full frame sensor
100%! Loving this combo ☺️
This lens isn’t “Russian”. The Soviet Helios 44-2 lens is 100% based on the German Carl Zeiss Jena Biotar 2/58 lens design. Initially, it was even referred to as “BTK” - “BioTar Krasnogorsky”.
Beautiful footage, is this the Full Frame one? It seems so.
Thanks!! And yes ☺️🎥
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
☺️🙏
There are several versions of these lenses, produced by different factories of the Soviet Union, each with different optical designs and the number of aperture blades. Initially made according to the design of the German-fascist film lens Carl Zeiss Biotar and mass-produced for Soviet citizens involved in photography (these lenses were produced more than any other in the world)
Amazing footage!
Which version of the lens did you use? and with the adapter did it cover the Full Frame sensor?
Thank you!! I have the HELIOS-44-2 2/58 h204-a / BelOMO . I used an Urth adapter, linked in the description and it does cover FF :)
I have 2 of them, Helios 44-2 KMZ 58 mm f/2.0 cine & 44 M39 13 blades 58 f/2 , They are Amazing. I'm not a big fan of the flares they produce but it can look nice sometimes.
Nice!! Yeah the look is not for everything and everyone.
Which of those two would you recommend and why?
@@InventiveImagery both are nice but the 13 blades one Bokeh is better & on the whole sharper. So 13 blade is 1st choice.
Fabulous!! Do you use an ND filter with the Helios?
Yes, Nisi one listed in the description :)
great images! did you shoot the lens wide open? the bokeh is strong even tho it looks decently sharp
Thanks!! Yes pretty much wide open for the whole video with only a few shots at 2.8 :)
Salut Florent ! incroyable images et compositions ! Tu pourrais me dire quel model exact tu as ? l’année où numéro de série peu aider ?
Merci beaucoup!! HELIOS-44-2 2/58 h204-a / BelOMO
Yup, I know that look well!
☺️🎥
hi nice video you got there! love the content you put out.
may i kindly check with you on the version that you got for the helios 44-2
Thank you!! It is the HELIOS-44-2 2/58 h204-a / BelOMO
@@OfTwoLands thanks for the reply! appreciated!
Just got this lens with the full frame 6k.. love it!.. how are you grading with FilmConvert with this lens?.. are you doing anything different to your normal process to get the best out of the glass?
Congrats! And no, I grade the same way. Might just use more grain :).
Thanks.. might be useful to see an update grading video from you to understand your process.. are you selecting the 6k blackmagic from the FilmConvert camera select as that’s the only option they have relevant to the new full frame?
Have the 44-4 variety. Lots of swirly character too.
I bet!
Love that lens! I had one and I regret selling it
Sorry to hear! They’re still pretty easy to find at least ☺️
Cool shots! Beautiful music. Why is video format a square though? 🤷🏾♂️
Not square. Open gate on the 6K FF is 3x2 native :)
Amazing - if you graded it with some film emulation it might be even better in my opinion :)
Thanks! It is graded with Filmconvert and film emulation ☺️
Just amazing. Please leave the link of this same lens.please
Thank you!! It’s a vintage lens so there no link unfortunately.
Gorgeous! What software do you edit/grade with the FilmConvert Plug In? If you don’t mind me asking.
Than you !!
I use Filmconvert in FCPX :)
@@OfTwoLands C’est top!
I love my Helios 44-2. Which version did you get?
HELIOS-44-2 2/58 h204-a / BelOMO ☺️
I’m shooting with bmp4k and a viltrox speedbooster nf-m43 and an adapter m42-nf and it doesn’t focus to infinity, anybody knows how to solve that? I tried to adjust the viltrox glass and that’s not enough, and I don’t wanna touch the helios
👍👌
I would love to have this lens. I feel like a fool for not grabbing one years ago!
Still plenty around ☺️
Great stuff how do you get your braw footage into fcp x?
I transcode all my footage to ProRes 422 UHD :)
Using resolve? Just exporting it?
Nice video! Did you shoot with manual focus or auto focus?
Thanks!! Manual :)
Did you color grade your bmcc 6k footage on the bmpcc 6k pack on film convert? Also did u use gen 4 or gen 5?
Yep, and I used Gen 4 :)
@@OfTwoLands thank you!
can you do some test with 60fps? I mostly do music videos and this is a big worry for me switching to the Pyxis will be the crop.
I prefer to shoot 60 on the 6K Pro. I love to shoot Open Gate 24 on the 6K FF.
@@OfTwoLands I have the 6k pocket but I need to make sure the crop doesn’t look to bad in the 50-60 fps modes on the new sensor because I do miss full frame honestly
Looks great, but whats the focal length? Looks like a 35mm or 50mm?
Thanks! 58mm :)
Really Nice, but you dint Use ND filter .IT Is correct ?
I used a VND
What use lens?
Which version of the Helios 44-2 did you use? KMZ, Belomo or Valdai?
Belomo from 73 ☺️
@@OfTwoLands I don't know wether to get the silver 13 blades, the 8 blades KMZ or Belomo.
@@OfTwoLands I got a Belomo 74 with green and yellow focus markings. It looks sharp and contrasty at the center more so than the Canon FD at f2. The only thing was there is small amount of play on the ring at the back of the lens so everytime I turn the focus ring I could hear a knock, wish there is a way to tighten that up.
What kind of adapter and ref you used?
Urth. Linked in the description :)
which film stock do you use on filmconvert?
KD5207 :)
@@OfTwoLands thank you sir! This is much appreciated! I'm shooting a tv show and editing a wedding that I want to use this on. you are a good guy
Why everyone shooting only in open gate , can you shoot in 6K DCI next time ?
Because we obviously like the look haha! Plus you can crop to DCI later on if you want. Feel free to do your own videos in DCI too :)
Do they have ef helios?
If you get it already modded or rehoused :)
Lots of reports of terrible noise at high ISO’s? Worse than 6k og or pro what’s your experience?
You do get a bit more noise than the 6K / Pro but it doesn't bother me at all. Feel free to watch my New York video and the breakdown as I show before and afters for some of my night time shots :)
@@OfTwoLands ok thanks - why do think this is? - hardware issue? - surley with full frame there should be less noise not more?
Wich adapter are you using?
Urth :) Link in description.
Where can one purchase a genuine Helios 44-2?
On websites like gumtree or eBay ☺️
Incredible lens. Incredible grade!!! One of my favorites. Love to pair it sometimes with the Isco Ultrastar anamorphic projector lens. For whoever’s curious to check that look, this video is shot with this combo on a Pocket 6k (heavy cropping needed since it can’t shoot anamorphic open gate). ruclips.net/video/JoHsGOwxR9Q/видео.htmlsi=0IOZIabaSGwV-Xkw
Now imagine your Canon FDs on this camera ;)
Haha I think I actually prefer this and my Contax Zeiss to my Canon FDs.
@@OfTwoLands that's fair! Seems like you like a sharper/cleaner look!
Footage looks great dude. Well done!
Bokeh can be distracting
Definitely not a lens for every project!
