I bought all of the ML drums for Black Friday. I own nearly all of the other "heavy hitter" libraries. This Series blew me away. Sometimes I just want to plug and play. ML drums are fantastic and get you there so quickly. Best sounding snares to me as well. This is an instant buy. Keep killing it ML Sound Lab. Mikko Player is ridiculously good too.
Oh my word, Finnvox, one of my dream studio, with Mikko Karmila and Mika Jussila (responsible for mixing and mastering my favorite albums). Gonna try that one for sure ! It is already sounding huge and natural
Nice to see this and hope you're doing good Mikko! Didn't have a clue about this drumkit. I've actually thought about the same thing, we should all have samples recorded in the legendary Finnvox! Just an amazing studio, been there multiple times and it just has this amazing feel. Great stuff. :) Keep it up!
Definitely a very, very good sound. I love ML Drums. Especially the fact that the room mics sound so good, it's a lot better than what you get with many other drum sample VSTs. This is another great pack, nice and fat and open and with a great smack to it. I'm a fan of big drum rooms so this one is definitely something for me.
Ive spent so much time on so many different combinations of snares in superior drummer and Grit instantly sounded better the second i used it. This room is unmatched by anything in superior in my opinion.
The room sounds incredible and the shells are very beefy. A little odd that there's no ride cymbal, but the available cymbals sound great as well. Nice addition to the product line!
Oh yeah the way the crashes are set for Blind Channel is so that the middle crash is the biggest crash and that's actually in the spot of a ride cymbal. It was intentionally not left in that way so anyone can just put the free ML Drums ride in if they want a ride cymbal for that kit.
Got this yesterday, already polished off a new track on it. It's *IDEAL* for punk. Gainstaged pretty much everything around the snare (lovely smack on that Deadzone kit snare.) This video does make sense re the gainstaging I did; a lot of it is "about the room" so if you use the multi-out in your DAW be aware you might not *quite* have the control you'd be expecting channel-by-channel. Not to imply it isn't there but it's "different" vs for example EZ drummer. That being the case the strength of it is in fact this, as in if you were just a small home studio looking to get drums on a rock/metal/punk track that sounded good I think you'd even get away with JUST this, stereo out and a little bit of compression maybe. More often than not at least. It's FAR better than it has any right to be! And at 29 Euros it's a steal tbh.
When I saw a new kit had been added to ML Drums I jumped on it as soon as I could. I've used pretty much all the other drum vsti's and I love how ML is great straight out of the box so to speak. If you haven't got Luxe or Meld yet, get those too! This isn't a paid endorsement, just a fan of great quality gear :)
Today I bought it because I was talking with a friend about how easy this plugin is to route in the channels, the mixer is simple and the samples are awesome, until he told me that tried the Grit expansion and it was a killer, so when I got it... what can I say? I just dropped the extra air tom from Essentials and just used some filters, didn't do any editing on the channels and the song I mixed sounded as I always wanted to... Mikko, you really nailed it big time with this one!
Thank you ever so much! Simple routing was a huge reason why we chose to build our own sample loader rather than using existing frameworks. Glad you're finding ML Drums to fit your workflow nicely! 💪 -Kai
I think at this point the HUMANIZE button is over, it would be nice to develop something more controllable like the BFD parameters, a knob to increase/decrease the humanization and another knob with something like TONE VARIATION to introduce subtle modifications to the tone or other ASDR parameters. I usually use FL Studio's FPC Sampler, which allows me to make round robins, but one way I find to increase the variation, when I have no more samples, is to duplicate them and edit slight changes in pitch, etc. And the result is an even more natural and varied sound. I'm not an engineer, but I'm sure all HUMANIZERS do something similar (besides also inserting subtle changes in time). I think the button has done its job and it's time to give more control over this, especially to feel more powerful... and slap the competition in the face with something like this!
i absolutely agree. for drums, the overheads are the meat and potatos - they give the unity of the kit, and the character of the drums. the rooms are extremely important for atmosphere and size. the close mics are just an addition for clarity and crack - not to overpower everything else. and i can't stand those tiny, sharp, plasticky transients. drums need to have impact, but it needs to be round impact. then you can compress and eq however you like. i've been using ml drums in my latest projects, and i foresee sticking to it. can i suggest more semi-open articulations for the high hat, for the existing and future kits? maybe two-three more, between the very slightly open and the first almost open articulations, if that makes any sense. great stuff.
Thank you so much for the comment, we appreciate your suggestion. Can't say for sure if we'll be expanding the hihat articulations but it's always something we're looking into. -Kai
What ever kit pieces your choose will be what you're hearing. F.ex. Luxe kit with Grit snare will have the Finnvox room for the snare. It's all real samples and not virtual so sadly can't place pre-recorded samples into the Finnvox room.... hmm... or maybe I can if I try something special...
If you adjust the pitch of the close mic of e.g. a Luxe Snare to the room mic of Grit you'll get good results. Having said that: It serves no actual purpose because you're just re-creating the overall sound of the Grit snare. So you might as well just use Grit in the first place. A room emulation however...
Was wondering if there were any updates included with Grit Drums to the midi map settings and the ability to invert the hi-hats for compatibility with Roland e-kits? I think all of you kits sound super amazing and I love being able to mismatch the different packs so i can set up my own customized kit to my personal taste. However, I still can't get the hats to work properly with my Roland TD-17 because of the inability to invert the hats.
You mentioned this studio having a chamber. Is this studio chamber the reverb channel or is that your onboard reverb from the plugin for all libraries? Just curious. Thanks
This Grit kit is exactly as Blind Channel use the kit in the real world, hence the omission of the ride. very easy to add in the Meld/Free/Essentials rides though! Thank you for your suggestions regarding reggae kit pieces too, we appreciate the feedback 💪 -Kai
To clarify - rimshots are always included in our packs. They're left as the loudest velocity layer of the snares and right under it there's a full on snare hit without rimshots.
So I downloaded the free version today.. loved it. then bought grit.. I have no toms with grit! did I do something wrong.. already contacted support.. but was hoping to get a reply here as well.. also, is there a way to drag and drop midi grooves from within the app? Im having to open SSD5, to put in my grooves.. If thats the case i may pass.. love ML stuff btw.. just frustrated
No way to load grooves at this time, it's something we're talking about for a future update. Grit should have one rack tom and two floor toms - be sure you're loading the rack tom in the centre spot. -Kai
You can mix and match all of our kits together - Grit will even pair with the kit pieces in ML Drums Free, so you can use Free's ride and everything else from Grit! -Kai
What happens to room mic when we try to blend different kits? For example trying to use Grit toms and Luxe snare, which were recorded in different rooms with different gear, what happens to the room mic? Do you just use a reverb IR of the room? If so, which room gets selected - the Grit one or the Luxe one? Also, same story with overheads - what if we combine Grit cymbals with Essentials? Won't it sound weird if they were captured in different room with different mic setup?
Good question - while the pieces were recorded in different rooms, they do still blend together nicely. The room channel doesn't select a room in the way you're thinking - the room tracks are all recorded alongside the kit. This is something we'll likely cover in a video if it comes up a lot! -Kai
@@mlsoundlab I don't think many people consider this but I find it an interesting topic and would love to see you guys cover it on the channel. Any insight on the technical side of things is super interesting to me and I guess there are some other geeks around lmao Keep up the wonderful work guys!
There are midi presets for the most common other drum vstis out there. That being said there seems to be some variance even withing drum packs from the same companies so sometimes you need to adjust things a little bit but really the included midi-presets in ML Drums are usually good to go!

I’m kinda interested how you have your MIDI mapped to program the drums. This kit sounds great!
The secret here is that that's actually my drum playing on my ekit that you're hearing in this demo. 😄
How does it work if you mix, say, Luxe kit pieces and Grit pieces in one setup, how does the Finnvox room sound apply in that kind of situation?
What ever kit pieces your choose will be what you're hearing. F.ex. Luxe kit with Grit snare will have the Finnvox room for the snare. It's all real samples and not virtual so sadly can't place pre-recorded samples into the Finnvox room.... hmm... or maybe I can if I try something special...

No dedicated rimshot articulations, though the harder articulations on the snare hit will naturally start to rimshot.
