The bit rate issue is complicated. A high bit rate can be just because they want better quality, or they could in fact be saving power and skipping some of the encoding steps. Canon cameras used to record at very high bit rate because they didn't have the CPU power to do the compression.
So the higher bitrate is likely due to wanting to save processing power for capture rather than for compression? This was the biggest question I had while watching this video: Why such a high bitrate for the Xperias?
@@nikytamayo the issue is how fast it can store data. Some phone have slow storage, so higher compression would be needed to keep the bit rate below the maximum rate of the storage device.
@@jakedailey1054 without doing an analysis of the resulting files it if imposible to say whether the high bit rate is actually making fit a better quality video, or just a larger one.
Bitrate of Xperia devastate rest of phones. Thats the true test. Very good video mam 👍 120mbps when you compress data to 10-15mbps it looks like lossless.
Hey Juan, have you found the 1V to actually shoot reliable frame rates? Like when at 4K120 does it drop frames? My friend sent me some iphone "120" footage and it was a nightmare to edit, it varied from like 70 to 110 and never actually hit 120
I shoot really short clips in 4K120, but dropping them into Resolve, I don't see a lot of dropped frames. Resolves lists them all as 119.8. Stats on VLC look similar. It's kind of remarkable considering the sony bitrate in HEVC is 150Mbps.
That's great to know thanks, as I am trying to add phone footage into a resolve timeline with proper camera footage I need those frame divisions lining up properly. It's obscene that all the other phones are trying to push their on-paper specs, but can't actually deliver in the real world@@SomeGadgetGuy
Juan; after watching your FIVE videos on this handset I've preordered this; it is due out on 29th June here in the UK. The overheating is what tipped me towards upgrading my Xperia 1 IV which I really like, but at times the screen gets really hot.
So these new phones will get really hot too when you drive them hard, but they handle those thermals a LOT more gracefully. Samsung owes the entire phone industry a big apology.
@@SomeGadgetGuy it's almost as if they did it on purpose as the UK and Europe always put down their Exynos CPU in their flagships compared to the rest of the world. It was always seen as the slightly worse performing on synthetic benchmarks and it was later getting gaming enhancements features. I actually really really like my Xperia 1 IV, the camera is really good and having a headphone jack again, so good. I'm using Shure 215 IEM for listening to music
I think video footage recording will behave very differently when its a static shot like this compared to something moving making the autofocus and stabilization work harder
Yes. By design. I can't account for every phone being handled in EXACTLY the same way. Even building a ridiculous rig to mount all six at the same time, phones on the outside of that rig would be handled differently than phones on the inside of that rig. Basically, anything you do beyond my setup here will additionally tax each phone and likely reduce overall recording time.
@@SomeGadgetGuy Always good to find a base line. This makes me wonder about the bit rate too. Do phones use variable bit rate? In that case it would make sense to have a small bit rate on a static shot like this and the sony could be seen as bad for not adapting it. If its fixed then its a clear winner of course.
8:46 Are you sure higher bitrate means more processing? RAW data isn't compressed and produces a big file. It's all about the compression settings. More processing can produce better quality and smaller size. So I don't think bitrate means much if the quality isn't set to an equal setting.
Good point!!! Well that would be a win for others if they need half the bitrate to achieve the same quality... It would be interesting to know which phone gives best video recording
@@farishanafiah8461There's a very good reason why AV1 video codec exists. If you put uncompressed 150Mbps video online, you need some seriously fast Internet coverage to play it.
This is the big one for those of us who actually work with these things! I've sometimes struggled with frame rate drop while doing in car video in summer heat, and it isn't always practical to shove a phone cooler on when you're mounting to the windshield. Suxks to need to switch back to am older pre 8 Gen 1 phone for work like that. I actually carry two phone cameras when covering events just to avoid down time. Yeah, at that point, some people would just go phone plus camera, but two (or three) phones are still more pocketable than a phone & camera combo.
@@SomeGadgetGuy I started using cellphones for published car photography because security gets antsy when you park and pull out a "professional" camera. Even a compact mirrorless. If you're pulling over and whipping out a phone, they'll assume you're just Instagramming. And then you get to theaters and events venues... granted, when I'm shooting am event, I do wish for better low light and flash performance, but they're usually well lit!
This is what I like to see While other reviews think Sony should do « this » or « this » because they « want/need to sell more » and « they don’t do things good »
@@farishanafiah8461 The thing is, they don't review the phone for what it says it does but for what they want the phone to do. That's not a review then, but a wishlist at best
Love the explanation behind the work... Not just I like this better. I don't think many ppl would have realized the Pixel could overheat and stop vid recording over the Xperia 1 iv... Another great comparison.
My Sony Xperia Pro-1 overheats like crazy as well, I found one solution is to get a gaming phone cooler fan. It's a peltier type cooler with a fan built in and it can extend my video recording time for a while, though you might pick up the fan noise on the mic.
Wonder how big the contribution of the Cam Sensor is to the heat development. Xperia I IV and V have the smallest Sensors in this comparison i think. Also the most heat was generated close to the cam Sensor. Imteresting would be a Xperia Pro I. Big Sensor that was not developed for small Phones and the slim Xperia cases together should be a lot of heat ^^
Larger sensor produces more heat. Also depends on other characteristics of sensors, fab process, etc Imx400 of XZ premium was very power hungry Sony claims new imx888 uses less power than usual exmor because new dual layer
Fantastic comparison. I did not realise that the Xperias were using such high data rates with the cinema pro app. It goes to show how serious Sony are about the app. What data rates are camera pro and video pro apps using?
I am getting an admission in the Bagnell Institute of Smartphone Testing, who else?... Amazing video as always Mr Bagnell, more content like this will be nice
Good channel. Nice leader. Thanks to your videos, I realized how cool the camera is in Sony phones. It's great, but dude. ) Inches, faringheits, halons, nifiga is not clear. You are watched from other countries, please make footnotes in more familiar measurement systems. Thank you. )
To be honest, only Sony. While you have to sacrifice the built-in Quad DAC and custom Desktop Mode UI, you still get the 3.5mm audio jack and microSD card slot.
I attach smartphone cooler, turn off internet data connection, turning low screen brigthness and ended up recording 2hours of video(4k30) and consuming 40% of the battery on Samsung Note 20 Ultra. But i realized recording video on pro-video drained battery faster than normal video
I understand when "regular" folks don't think to turn stuff down, but techies should be shamed when they complain about needing to tweak settings to record longer.
Smartphone cooler...like an active fan? Does it not add noise to the recording???? Also I would not be too proud if I had to add this accessory to my shooting kit .. S10+ I am pretty sure I can record 4k@60 for more than 2 hours...without doing all that
I have the Xperia 1 v and it performs much better than the mark iv in terms of heat. However, I tend to always record in 4K 60fps+ in HDR. I feel HDR causes more heat than SDR, can you do a 4K 60fps HDR test to see if there is a noticeable difference? I think I'll do an SDR test myself too.
I doubt shooting in HDR with 1 V will give you any problem this year, they really did improve the cooling....Can I ask how is your battery life on that one?
@@Joxe-qp6bq I'd say I'm a pretty heavy user, so I tend to charge at least once in the middle of the day. No complaints though, I think it's enough for a days use if you drain it all the way. From my HDR tests with 4K 60fps HDR, I stopped it after ~14 mins without an overheating warning, but when I attempted to restart it, it stopped and threw a cooling down warning, though I did run a 4K 120fps HDR test just before which ran for about 8 minutes before...I think I stopped it...maybe. I haven't had the phone long enough to tell, but in normal use, it's great, but I have still encountered it stopping to cool down, this is mostly after wireless charging and going straight to 4K 120fps though. I'm still happy, but still wondering how some RUclipsrs got 3 hours of recording. I also tested 4K 30fps HDR, it got about 40 mins in close to 30 degrees celsius, I was away from the phone so I'm not sure why it stopped, though I assume heat.
I wonder how much data the s23 ultra use when set to record in high bitrate. What was the spoiler alert samsung fails when samsung is not even in this comparison
Well, I totally liked this video comparison especially compared to last year with Xperia 1 IV overheating on its own I do wonder and you made some valid points why do we need such a high bitrate of 120 or 150mbps...I am not even sure we can see the difference...I don't see an advantage in Xperia videos in quality with double the bitrate either... It a a pity we cannot choose the bitrate in camera and video pro app. I am almost sure that would help with Xperia 1 IV overheating since even in 4k@60 I still dont manage to get over 5-10 mn without overheating. Also lesser bitrate might allow Sony to have other functions working while recording....
When posting videos into any social media sites, there would always practically be some compression in those videos. RUclips happens to have less compression compared to some other social media sites, but there's still some quality loss overall from the raw footage. The higher bit rate of Xperia assures that it would retain more of the original quality even when heavily compressed, whereas the others would've already looked unusable in the same situation. Try watching in 144p, perhaps the difference will be significantly more pronounced.
Yes the comment above is correct, where you see the video shot by xperia because you need to see in real life not on social media because social media has limited bitrate
Try put phone in Fly mode so not has everything else on going in phone it help a lot in my Xperia 5 March III when take of other functions so Fly mode on get longer Recording time 👍
Now that the Pro-I is $999 with the vlogging kit, is that a competitive option because of the larger sensor, or is the new sensor here better because of the dual layer design? I pre-ordered the 1 V but saw the Pro-I at Best Buy for 999. It's a gorgeous looking phone that looks very professional.

How did you get such long recordings with the Xperia 1 iv? I tried a similar test myself with airplane mode and dimmed screen but 5 min in the overheating warning came on. Why the big difference? If I could record for 30 min, I would keep my 1 iv as I like to record instructional videos…I will probably get the 1 v but if I can keep the 1 iv, I would. Anyways, thanks for the video
Motorola fan here, does the sony's have a desktop mode? I think that might help. I just order the Edge+ 2023. I hope the Ready For (RD4) help me ditch the laptop for spread sheets and word processor. But I intended to use as a on budget astrophotography with a ported GCam and I hope the Moto would be able to handel that. This video will be help full when that time comes.
Hi Juan, I don't really understand how the Sony is recording double the data for the same resolution and frame rate. Does that mean there is more information being recorded on the Sony, somehow? Or is it something to do with the files being less compressed? I always thought you had a certain number of pixels at a certain rate, and that's your data - but obviously there's a lot more to it.
Video is just like any other media. You can take the raw data off a CD or make an MP3. You can take the full camera sensor data or make a jpg. As soon as you make a smaller "package", you can adjust how much info you're saving.
Higher bitrate means more quality. You can downscale the video output to 10x less bitrate and it still retains the same quality you get with 120Mbps bitrate.
This is very interesting information thank you so much highly appreciated. Xperia Phones are not given fair testing. Most reviews are sabotaging Sony. and we know what Xperia can do what other phones can't do. Xperia is simple best like Lexus LFA 🔥

Someday I believe phones like the future Xperias will become the mainstream cameras that even pros use as tools. Sadly I might concede to that if the quality is better that my Sony A7 III, but of course it doesn't beat out the physical feel of holding a proper camera and pushing tactile buttons.
This is why i always told people that Sony Xperia 1 series are not mere "flagship" phone. They are phone for professional that are aimed for specific kind of users. It is very rare to find a phone that is specifically built for certain target nowadays.
It's really a shame. Phones are SO Much more interesting when they have a purpose. We accept this with laptops, but everyone wants to talk about phones as "basic communicators".

Great job on another great detailed video juan.
Watched on Patreon. Here for the main video.
Excellent video! Thanks Juan!
I love this type of camera test😌 kindly do another test for this year's Sony Xperia 1 vi and this time include iPhone 16 pro max🙏🏽
Actually, yes. Higher bitrate means more computing power from the chipset. Sony don't tend to do compression like other phones, LG included.
@@farishanafiah8461There's a very good reason why AV1 video codec exists. If you put uncompressed 150Mbps video online, you need some seriously fast Internet coverage to play it.
That Sony Xperia 1 IV is very impressive. Not the first to tap out at more than double the bitrate on a Samsung node.
18mins went by fast.. I wonder why🤔
Great content 👌🏾
It would be interesting to see S23U in this test.
More and more likely to get kicked out of events with a legit camera now too.
@@SomeGadgetGuyYes very true!
Juan, I don't need a Xperia 1 V... Why it has to be so good? 150 of bitrate? That's insane!
@@nickthaskater according to GSMARENA even on 8K video its only 85mb/s max

This is what I like to see
While other reviews think Sony should do « this » or « this » because they « want/need to sell more » and « they don’t do things good »
That's why I stopped watching large popular channels. I really question their credibility as a "reviewer" and "techies".
I'll leave the shallow "sony names are so CONFUSING" reviews to others. I think this stuff is more fun.
I wonder, what if, Camera-focused phone maker would adapt the physical cooling fan system like in those gaming phone.. Wont that be awesome?
Still don't understand why no one companies moving into av1 yet, the sd 8gen2 had that features already
Software costs money.
Nobody wants to spend on this
As always great review!
The XPERIA 1v and Pixel 7 pro now have similar sized main camera sensors.
Larger sensor produces more heat. Also depends on other characteristics of sensors, fab process, etc
Imx400 of XZ premium was very power hungry
Sony claims new imx888 uses less power than usual exmor because new dual layer
Fantastic comparison. I did not realise that the Xperias were using such high data rates with the cinema pro app. It goes to show how serious Sony are about the app. What data rates are camera pro and video pro apps using?
Best showcase of smartphone video shooting comparison.
Thank you. )
Yeah please dismiss Fahrenheit, Celsius degrees are a lot cooler :-)
@@Joxe-qp6bq I support. I think so too. )))
Man, been wondering about this and what your thoughts are on the phone.
It's a GOOD update.
Worth the price, or would you recommend another Sony phone?
Could you please test the phones with an app, mcpro24fps which has a inbuilt dropped frame counter? Android has a problem with dropped frames.
Juan, I've been watching your content for years and was wondering . What is the most LGesque phone out there these days?
To be honest, only Sony. While you have to sacrifice the built-in Quad DAC and custom Desktop Mode UI, you still get the 3.5mm audio jack and microSD card slot.
Another amazing video! The level of insight is, as always, through the roof!
thnks. I want a Sony 1 V, maybe you made a video explaining how use that camera.
Sony is SONY !!! ❤️
I'd buy this phone in a heartbeat but Canadian carriers don't support it officially.
Wait, you had snow in Miami?...
S10+ I am pretty sure I can record 4k@60 for more than 2 hours...without doing all that
what about the powerdraw? and what's the bitrate for iphone 14 pro's 4k60?
Who fabbed the Tensor 2 and 8Gen1?
@@SomeGadgetGuy its samsung 😂
Well, I totally liked this video comparison especially compared to last year with Xperia 1 IV overheating on its own
I do wonder and you made some valid points why do we need such a high bitrate of 120 or 150mbps...I am not even sure we can see the difference...I don't see an advantage in Xperia videos in quality with double the bitrate either...
@@troy5568 lol 144p will look bad for me whatever the bitrate...my limit would be 360p

I just received a new small update notification no my xperia 5 1V can you go a little bit into what it fixes ?
Does a screen protector make a difference for heat dissipation? Looks like the Sony 1 IV was the only one with a screen protector.
Majority of heat comes out through back panel.
@@silva_br1but temp from screen goes through screen display.
The dual aperture is handy, but the 1V is better in practically every other way.
@@SomeGadgetGuy Hell yeah, thank you sir for the confirmation. I'll wait patiently for my khaki green 1 V in July 28!
I wonder if a screen protector will improve, decrease or make no noticeable difference in heat dissipation. I would guess no difference.
I honestly probably does at a scientific level, but I'm not sure how I would practically test that.
I have expected the pixel to drop 1st and it did.
It wasn't just feom samsung. It is an exynos. They admitted it already
I notice Xiaomi has option to automatically reduce framerate when it's getting too hot.
Dearest,
You are the top Xperia tester in regards of proving the paper numbers on real life. But please help my testing by an answer for Xperia 1mk4 and mk5 in comparison for you having both. For this 64.1.A.0.891/913 mk4's latest firmware upgrade.
1. The slow shutter speed in lowlight 1s manual at 64-200 ISO manual, in the pictures appeare burned/coloured chaotic pixels that ruins the image overall (telephoto is the worst!).This is still happening for you?
2. The low light videos are very dark and its flash is better/stronger on photo than as video torch. Is this issue for your devices mk4 and mk5? Can you recoomend a specific setting/app to have more light (HDR is not helping)?
3. Front cam missing manual and bokeh big time for its wanna-be and how would you get a front selfie bokeh in the mk4 and mk5 compared to you?
4. Even Xperia now have amazing screen brightness after getting warmer the brighness dims and then the OLED have ghosting on mk4 this is on mk5 also?
So can you please make a video with these comparisons tests for the latest firmware upgrades and give some good advices? More even, to send these issues to the software engineers, for that Xperia 1 mk4 to have a chance to its wanna-be? Some people as I know in my country are very dissapointed by this fact and Sont don't even answer to their e-mails with these issues still unsolved.
Thank you so much for helping!
PS: Crapsung is doing crap for Xperia also, Sony should have known that before and test its wanna-be's!
There's also graphene sheets you can stick over the back, no idea how well they will work.
Thank you for your work! Back in the past I returned my xperia 1 mark 3 bcoz of the overheating... Now the 1 mark 5 is my dream phone. 😔 Sadly way too expensive for me. 😔.
Here I was all worried about the 888 when it launched, and then the 8G1 was like "here hold my alarmingly hot beer"...
I'm glad to have an Xperia 1 series phone. Very nice!
Thanks for the test! May I know what is the video editor at 16:32 ?

Motorola fan here, does the sony's have a desktop mode? I think that might help. I just order the Edge+ 2023. I hope the Ready For (RD4) help me ditch the laptop for spread sheets and word processor. But I intended to use as a on budget astrophotography with a ported GCam and I hope the Moto would be able to handel that. This video will be help full when that time comes.
Unfortunately, no. Sony only gives wired video output, but that's about it.
That freedom temperature is a bit confusing but interesting nonetheless.
The real question is, get this Sony V or wait for the PRO i 2?....
What's the bitrate of 4k120?
Sony really needs to sell the Xperia 1 V in Canada. I really want one
Truth.
What is the pro of that sony xperia iv 120mbps?
Higher bitrate means more quality. You can downscale the video output to 10x less bitrate and it still retains the same quality you get with 120Mbps bitrate.
Awesome Xperia 💙
pro xperia needs pro reviewers like u
On my xiaomi 12T there’s an option in settings of video mode for whether you want to automaticity turn down the frame rate, does that work?
I coated all the camera housings as well as the both sides of my Xperia 1 IV upper circuit board in thermal grizzly for blistering performance 📱

whats the bitrate at 4k 120 like, how high bitrate can you go
It's already mentioned in the video, 150Mbps.

Most reviews are sabotaging Sony. and we know what Xperia can do what other phones can't do.
Xperia is simple best like Lexus LFA 🔥
What are your thoughts on the phandroid iphone 14 pro vs xperia 1 v? They basically aaid the xperia isnt even close. All the while they kept it in auto mode. 🙄🙄🙄
I think you have your answer in the question there. If you're only ever going to test basic full auto, why buy more than a midranger like a Pixel A?
@@SomeGadgetGuy you'd think with it being an android centric site that they'd try out more features than just point and shoot.
@@SomeGadgetGuybecause we also like Sony design better...but Xperia zoom lense still seems a bit lacking compared to Pixel 5X optical zoom...
Also I am not sure if Xperia takes advantage of those 48-52 mpxl for 2X or 3X photos
well to me iphone is good but not at Sony level when you don't use auto mode, and Sony aims for more professional group anyway
Someday I believe phones like the future Xperias will become the mainstream cameras that even pros use as tools. Sadly I might concede to that if the quality is better that my Sony A7 III, but of course it doesn't beat out the physical feel of holding a proper camera and pushing tactile buttons.
Does the much higher Sony video data bit rate translate into better quality video?
I should be in 2 situations:
Low light video
And Many elements on video(city recordings for example)
This should be shared by Sony themselves.
Everyone talking Sh*t about overheating and it turns out the bitrate is double than its competitors
